Joshua has spent the past 3 years in the Crown Heights community providing psychotherapy to older teens and adults who normally wouldn't have access to therapy. His expertise and curricula focus on dismantling the stigma of mental health care within the Black/Caribbean community in order to create healing spaces for those who are prevented from having access. Joshua specializes in individual trauma-based therapy and is well versed in many evidence-based practices, which allows him to tailor his approach for disenfranchised people. Joshua's work has historically been rooted in level analysis through an anti-oppressive to approach discourse by assessing how the macro and mezo levels within systems impact the micro. Joshua has also participated in policy work and has assisted in the creation of college level curricula taught within Sing Sing Correctional facility for men who were not expected to be released from incarceration. He has also co-created the Mass Incarceration Conversation Series with Dr. Kirk A. James, which provided conversation addressing the impact of hyper incarceration of subjugated communities. Joshua has presented his work around dismantling anti-blackness within the social work profession for Children of Promise, the NASW-NYC Conference, the National Conference in Washington, DC., as well as graduate level spaces at NYU. Her poems usually explore social issues that affect youths and are passionate about Youth development. She identifies as an especially vocal advocate in both her work and writing for the rights of women, people of color, and other historically marginalized groups. She is the author of the book, Queen Bee Cavity, available on her website. She served as the team lead for volunteers at the 2018 National Association of Social Workers National Conference in Washington, DC. Also, in her role as social work club president for the York College Empowering & Encouraging Together Club, has led many projects. During 2015, she was instrumental in organizing and facilitating monthly meetings with executive officers and club members. During the 2015-16 academic year, she co-organized: Annual Legislative Action Day in Albany, NY, in which she advocated for loan forgiveness, tuition reduction, extending tuition for assistance programs, and Pell Grants. Fatima Mabrouk among 12 other York's college students had the opportunity to participate in marching peacefully on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the State of Alabama to take part in the 50 anniversary of Bloody Sunday for the voting rights movement and the Freedom Flame Awards Gala. For her outstanding leadership and unwavering commitment to service, Fatima Mabrouk was awarded the 2nd Annual CUNY Women's Centers Council In Service to Women Award. Her passion for civil rights and social justice issues has provided her with opportunities towards her research on the intersections of racial identity and microaggressions in social work practice. Fatima is now a researcher assistant at Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College studying families involved in child welfare and child mental health services and Columbia's SSW Associate. Harper (also known as Rycka) knew she had big dreams while living in a small city. Whenever she opened her mouth, it was evident to her family that she was going to make it one day. It was also clear that she enjoyed eating! Her home and family life abounded in practicality, humor, and fellowship over food. After graduating from Wichita High School East, Chrycka's mom and brother packed a rental minivan to drive her 1,428 miles to Washington, DC to attend Howard University. Fast forward to 2018, Chrycka obtained a Bachelor's degree in Psychology, Master of Social Work, and a passion to bridge mental health empowerment, storytelling, and food. From there, she embarked on a career journey full of tears and triumphs as she constantly refined her vision while simply adulting. Now, Chrycka is embracing her purpose to empower people to cook for joy and therapy through her platform, Rycka's Kitchen. She will be the spokesperson for the mental health benefits of cooking and how it can be a strategic tool in food justice. In her free time, Chrycka enjoys dancing, reading, journaling, and creative writing, and, most importantly, growing in her Christian faith.
