Microsoft has revealed that Ruth McGuinness, Head of Data and AI at Kainos, headquartered in Belfast has won the Microsoft Power Women Award 2024 in Ireland. The Microsoft Power Women Awards are part of Microsoft's ongoing commitment to inspire, promote and invest in a new generation of women tech talent. The awards shine a spotlight on some of the amazing women spearheading greater diversity and inclusion throughout the Microsoft Partner network. In the second year of the awards, the programme expanded its reach covering Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, with nearly 400 applications from exceptional women who have made significant contributions to technology, and diversity and inclusion. McGuinness is a prominent leader in the field of AI, overseeing one of Ireland's largest AI teams with 150 members generating millions of pounds annually through delivery of AI technology programmes in both public and private sector organisations across Ireland, the UK, Europe, and North America. Her focus includes developing AI tooling that is robust, explainable, and trustworthy and advocating for ethical AI adoption. Passionate about bridging the gap between academic research and industry, McGuinness is also the primary industry partner of the AI Research Centre (AIRC) at Ulster University, supporting 100+ AI researchers in trusted AI applications. She also supports the development of more diverse AI talent as a curator of AI CON, Ireland's largest annual AI conference, while being a strong advocate for the robust regulation of AI across other public forums, both local and international. Accepting the award, Ruth McGuinness said, "I'm very grateful to Microsoft Ireland for honouring me with this prestigious award. It is humbling to be included among such an incredible and inspiring cohort of powerhouse women in the Microsoft ecosystem across Western Europe. "I also welcome the opportunity of accepting an award for my career during a period of extended maternity leave with my second child - it's great to see how much progress has been made in terms of gender equity despite how much more we need to achieve! "Women face a multitude of barriers when trying to have children and a career. While we know that only 26% of technology roles are held by women, further data shows that women often then depart those technology careers at this important stage in their lives, due to inadequate parental leave benefits, expensive childcare systems and a lack of access to good quality flexible working. "The IT industry needs to continue to do more, to not only attract, but also to retain young women, through ensuring job roles come with an inclusive culture, flexible working hours, flexible roles, equity and fairness. "I feel passionately about the mantra that "you can't be what you can't see" and believe that elevating diverse role models for women - such as through Microsoft's Power Women Award - plays an incredibly important role in empowering others coming into the industry" - said Ruth McGuinness, Head of Data and AI at Kainos. McGuinness will join the other 18 winners at the Microsoft Women's Leadership Program 2nd Edition, a customised programme developed by Professor Jennifer Petriglieri at the INSEAD Business School in Fontainebleau, France. [4:25] In the beginning, I was a hairdresser and my dream was always to open a salon. [4:38] When we started talking about opening a salon, my husband suggested that call the salon ‘Hello gorgeous,' and I said that's the stupidest thing I've ever heard. [4:45] We opened a salon and owned it for 10 years and did not call it ‘Hello gorgeous' but ‘Cheveu,' which meant hair in French. [5:07] The whole time that I own the salon, I always felt that there was just something that was missing. [5:13] I remodeled the salon and we grew from one station to seven stations and outgrew from 1000 square feet and went to 3000 square feet with 17 stylists and massage therapists and receptionists. [5:33] That still didn't fulfil that emptiness I was feeling and I thought what maybe I needed was to work on myself. [5:45] I started training at all these places and there was still this emptiness that I was feeling. [5:51] Mike and I had the conversations about something more we should be doing and one day all of a sudden it felt in my heart. [6:02] We needed to have a mobile Day Spa that caters to cancer patients to treat them during a time where they don't feel very special. [6:23] I pitched this idea to him about this beautiful mobile Day Spa and that we were going to it for free and suggested to call it ‘Hello gorgeous.' [6:58] Part of the program that we do is in-person makeovers and considering that most women are often selfless, we try to make sure that we surprise them. [10:20] It is usually a nomination process where each of the women is nominated by family and friends and then we show up unannounced and give a head to toe makeover. [10:55] I never promise to make them look like Miss America, but I try to make her look normal and so that they can participate in your everyday life [12:04] We've been doing this almost 16 years and so I don't know whether I ever realize the impact and the ripple effect. [12:44] When she's smiling, everybody else smiles around her and so it's not just her that we help. It's all the other people that surround her. [13:05] I've had to change my verbiage to how can I support you because when you ask a different question, you elicit a different response. [14:38] Commercial break. [16:46] There is a ripple effect as far as the work that we do with the women. [19:07] I worked with a life coach for a really long time and she always talks about your areas of genius and that I can't be good at everything but I can be good at some things. [19:20] There are things that other people are really good at that I'm not good at but I can use those talents and their time to help me further my mission. [19:29] I've had to kind of narrow down to my areas of genius and had people come forward and help because they want to be a part of something bigger than themselves. [19:37] One of the things that we do is we have a salon affiliate program where I found salon owners to train them to create the ‘Hello Gorgeous' experience. [20:06] I like to tell business owners and business people that one of the things that they should do is team up with nonprofits. [21:12] I did find that as soon as we open the salon affiliates across the United States, that's what made them stand out in their community. [21:54] If you could do anything in the whole wide world that you wanted to do, and you didn't have to get paid to do it, what would it be? [22:38] Find out what that is and if you're not doing it in your daily work, find out what would feed that in you and find a nonprofit that's already doing that and go help them. [22:45] There's something so fulfilling about being able to help other people. [24:25] If you have a something that you feel like you're supposed to be doing, even if you don't feel like you're qualified to do it, go ahead and do it. [24:32] …………………..….. How the Right Market Intelligence Enables Organizations to Thrive in Challenging Times

Modern Marketing Engine podcast hosted by Bernie Borges

Subscribe to Modern Marketing Engine on your app of choice. Companies must have a strategic plan to grow and expand, especially in challenging times like the current pandemic, where market dynamics have shifted and priorities have shifted. Most B2B companies use traditional market reports to guide their strategic decisions, but they are not enough. However, with the right market intelligence, B2B organizations can prioritize their accounts, reevaluate territories and rethink their ideal customer profile to actually thrive. In this episode of the Modern Marketing Engine, my guest, Elizabeth Cholawsky, PhD, describes how technology intelligence helps companies plan with confidence and make better decisions. She is a seasoned executive leader in the technology industry with a strong focus on growing successful SaaS-based businesses. Elizabeth has led and worked with companies to build market-leading offerings, using in-house talent as well as through partnerships and acquisitions. Elizabeth is the CEO at HG Insights. The company has built the world’s largest and most accurate database of B2B technology customer intelligence, tracking more than a million businesses and the specific technology stack products they are using. Elizabeth won Comparably’s 2019 Best CEO for Women Award. This post summarizes our conversation. I invite you listen to the entire episode (33 minute interview) to learn more about market intelligence and how it can help your marketing or sales team succeed. Success Begins with Strategic Planning Whether your company is trying to determine which territories to expand to, how to align sales and marketing with the right accounts, staff your business appropriately and invest in effective tools for growth or persuade investors to fund you, or pivot due to COVID-19 you need strategic planning. But where do you start? You must start with data. Unfortunately, traditional market reports are not enough to make informed decisions. Most are based on customer surveys interpreted by analysts and provide only high-level numbers on potential size and growth of a market. These reports are too generic and not very actionable. This is where technology intelligence comes in. Technology Intelligence Elizabeth says that her clients are usually looking for much deeper insights than what’s provided on an analyst report, which is generally an estimate of the total available market (TAM) or serviceable available market (SAM). What they need is to understand their serviceable obtainable market (SOM), which represents the segment of the market they think they can realistically capture with their product or service. And to obtain the SOM, they need detailed tech intelligence on what technology products their accounts or prospective buyers have installed. Tech intelligence allows the entire organization to make better decisions. For instance: Sales leaders use granular tech intelligence to map out and divide their sales territories into regions that contain accounts that match their ideal customer profile (ICP). Sales and marketing teams use tech intelligence to develop and deliver highly relevant campaigns with messaging customized to a prospect’s strategic initiatives, existing solutions and pain points. Product teams use tech trending information to make decisions on which products they need to enhance or end, and what new solutions they need to develop to better compete in the future. Elizabeth says that the data HG Insights provides is so detailed that their clients can understand what technology products are installed at each account and what the budgets are for those products. That way they can make fair comparisons between markets. In our interview, Elizabeth shared an example contrasting tech intelligence between Germany and France, providing data to support the decision to invest in one country over the other. In Challenging Times You Must be Able to Change Your Plan Quickly When a crisis such as COVID-19 hits, organizations must re-think everything: from reevaluating territories to reevaluating their ICP. In the current environment, account prioritization becomes critical. How can the right market intelligence help marketing and sales teams to focus their efforts? Elizabeth says that tech intelligence can help sales by identifying accounts with the highest propensity to buy, with insights about a company’s tech stack and what their budgets are. And it can help marketing in developing messaging to address pain points for better engagement rates. One success story Elizabeth shared is Citrix, which used tech intelligence to build an $80M pipeline, reduce sales cycles by 30% and quadruple the rate at which they turned leads into opportunities. Listen to the entire episode as Elizabeth shares more details about how the right market intelligence can enable B2B companies to identify the best opportunities, even in the midst of the COVID crisis. Dr. Elizabeth Vliet, the past director of the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons and Ellis Island Medal of Honor recipient joins Dr. George to discuss the impact of bureaucrats within the FDA as well as various state health departments who continue to block physicians from prescribing Hydroxycholorquine upon early Covid-19 diagnosis. Will this bureaucratic entangling of red tape interposing against the prescribing authority of front-line physicians trying to save lives during the Coronavirus Pandemic be remembered as one of the worst preventable medical tragedies our time? One must ask the question Cui Bono when it comes to preventing the use of Hydroxychloroquine at every step of the way throughout the crisis. Dr. Vliet has been a leader in patient centered, individualized medical care. Since 1986, she has practiced medicine independent of insurance contracts that interfere with patient-physician relationships and decision-making. Dr. Vliet focus is medical freedom and free market approaches to healthcare. Dr. Vliet is the founder of Vive Life Center and Hormone Health Strategies with medical practices in Tucson AZ and Dallas TX, specializing in preventive and climacteric medicine with an integrated approach to evaluation and treatment of women and men with complex medical and hormonal problems from puberty to late life. Dr. Vliet is a 2014 Ellis Island Medal of Honor recipient for her national and international educational efforts in health, wellness, and endocrine aging in men and women, and is recognized in the US as a motivational speaker in health and wellness and a powerful patient advocate, proponent of free market approaches to lower healthcare costs. Dr. Vliet is the recipient of Voice of Women Award from Arizona Foundation for Women in recognition of her pioneering advocacy for the overlooked hormone connections in women’s health. Dr. Karen Daniels is a Professor in the Department of Physics at North Carolina State University. Karen’s lab investigates the physics of how materials change state (e.g. from solid to fluid), how they deform, and how they may ultimately fail. She studies these questions across a variety of length and time scales, from microscopic phenomena that occur in less than a second to shifts in land that occur on geologic timescales and may lead to landslides. Travel is a passion for Karen. While traveling, she loves hiking on mountain trails, eating delicious food, discovering new foods that she can try to make at home, reading books, knitting, and interacting with new people and places. She received her BA in physics from Dartmouth College. Karen then worked for about three years as a science teacher at Saint Ann’s School in Brooklyn before enrolling in graduate school at Cornell University where she earned her PhD in physics. She then conducted postdoctoral research at Duke University before joining the faculty at NCSU in 2005. Karen has been awarded a fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation to support a yearlong sabbatical at the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self-Organization in Göttingen, Germany. In addition, Karen was the recipient of a National Science Foundation Early Career Development (CAREER) Award, the Equity for Women Award from NCSU, and the LeRoy and Elva Martin Award for Teaching Excellence. She has also been named a Fellow of the American Physical Society.

That's the question bestselling author Joanna Barsh set out to answer in her latest book, Grow Wherever You Work. How did she find the answer? Not by asking motivational types or the well-established CEOs, but by diving into the trenches with today's boldest, brightest, up-and-coming leaders (some were... millennials!!... gasp!). Distilling the stories of important work challenges from more than 200 rising leaders in 120 companies, her new book can help anyone grow and learn through the challenges that we all face--not despite them. Why Joanna? Prior to retiring, she joined McKinsey & Company in 1981 and was a senior partner. Along with her consulting work, she lead the McKinsey Centered Leadership Project, whose goal was to help develop women leaders. Joanna is a New York City Commissioner of Women's Issues and received the Girl Scouts Council Woman of Distinction Award and the National Council of Research on Women Award. I'm humbled and honored today to bring you this Extraordinary Women Radio interview with Dottie Lamm, the former First Lady of Colorado, a legendary women’s movement leader and activist! Dottie is a Colorado Women's Hall of Fame Inductee, an organization that I'm pleased to partner with - helping tell the stories of women who have really made a difference in Colorado! I love this interview - Dottie's delightful storytelling is filled with humor and wisdom! She gives great advice on lighting up our courage (hint: it starts with jumping in and just getting active!). We chat about surviving success and surviving failure, philanthropy, feminism and the biggest challenges women are facing today. Dottie shares how important it is to engage in the courageous conversations we need to be having now and give voice to what we care about.  Dottie has taken a stand and stood up for so many causes in her lifetime. I’m so inspired. Her writings, her teachings, her stories – have made a difference and helped shape opportunities, guide policy and open doors for women and others for many years. She marched with Betty Ford and other first ladies on the national Equal Rights Amendment; and worked to help pass Colorado’s Equal Rights Amendment. She marched in Selma for voting rights for African-Americans. In the mid-nineties, she was appointed by President Clinton to the U.N. Conference on Population and Development in Cairo, and to the Fourth World Conference on Women in Beijing. Dottie helped found the Women’s Foundation of Colorado and became its first President.  The “Dottie Lamm Award” given each year to a high school sophomore girl (or girls) in Dottie’s name has developed into the Girls’ Leadership Council. This Council consists of a number of outstanding girls from around the state who become a granting organization in their own right for that year She has a long, long list of awards that have been granted to her over the years for civil rights, women’s empowerment, leadership and more, including: The Big Sisters’ Contributions to Women Award. The Women’s Foundation Scholarship award given, in her name, to two high school students each year who “share Dottie Lamm’s compassionate values.” The Colorado Black Women for Political Action Award. The Anti-Defamation League Civil Rights Award. The Occidental College Gold Seal Alumni Award for Community Service. The Monte Pascoe Civic Leadership Award The Volunteers of America Empathy Award The Colorado League of Women Voters Leadership in Democracy Award Dottie is a legend in her own right and let's just say, I’m a bit-awe-inspired to share this interview with you! I hope you enjoy it as much as did getting to interview Dottie! *** The Colorado Women's Hall of Fame mission is to inspire by celebrating and sharing the enduring contributions of Colorado’s distinctive women. To achieve this, the Hall educates the people of Colorado about the stories of the women who shaped our state and the nation’s history with courage, leadership, intelligence, compassion, and creativity. Their talents, skills, struggles, and contributions form a legacy that the Colorado Women’s Hall of Fame is dedicated to protecting.

On the October 20, 2015 Boomer Generation Radio program, Rabbi Address chats with Dr. Alan Steinfeld about his early retirement. In the second half of the program, the guest is Social Security Commissioner Carolyn Colvin to discuss the 80th anniversary of the Social Security System. [powerpress] About the Guests Dr. Alan Steinfeld, an oncologist who was on the faculty of the School of Medicine at New York University, retired in his mid-50s to pursue his interests in genealogy and gardening. “I wanted the time to get things done while I had the physical strength, the mental strength, to do it. I actually stopped working full-time at age 54, worked for another year or two part-time, and then stopped completely,” he says. “In retirement, I have been deeply involved with two activities. One is genealogy. As an avid amateur genealogist for the past almost 40 years, I have used my retirement years to advance research into my family, teach the subject on various levels and use my knowledge to assist other groups (e.g, Dobbs Ferry Historical Society and the Village of Scarsdale),” he says. “I have also been a gardener for many decades. In retirement, I became a volunteer at the New York Botanical Garden. After leading tours for a number of years and working in the greenhouses, I moved to the library about 8 years ago, where I have cataloged a number of specialty collections.”   Social Security Commissioner Carolyn Colvin On June 20, 2014, President Obama nominated Carolyn W.
