Seg 1: How did “selling out” become an insult? The term "sellout" is commonly used in various domains, such as politics, sports, Hollywood, and the arts, to criticize individuals perceived to have compromised their principles for personal gain. Guest: Dr. Ian Afflerbach, Associate Professor of American Literature at the University of North Georgia Seg 2: Revisiting old laws that never get taken off the books Arizona's conservative Supreme Court revived a near-total ban on abortion on Tuesday by invoking a 160-year-old law from 1864. What other laws exist out there that are outdated. Guest: Scott Shantz, Contributor for Mornings with Simi Seg 3: View From Victoria: Doing away with protests at schools The Premier of the province has announced legislation to protect schools from disruptive protests. Guest: Vaughn Palmer, Vancouver Sun Columnist Seg 4: Why fans shouldn't be used during heatwaves Recent guidance suggests that electric fans are helpful during heatwaves. According to these guides, fans help cool the body in air temperatures up to 40°C due to their promotion of sweat evaporation. But a research group says that may not be the case. Guest: Dr. Robert Meade, Postdoctoral Fellow at the Human and Environmental Physiology Research Unit at the University of Ottawa Seg 5: Should we get rid of ‘shift' work? Is there a reason we should do away with ‘shift work'? How healthy is it to work long shifts that constantly change? Guest: Dr. Wen-Jui Han, professor at the NYU Silver School of Social Work Seg 6: How new technology is helping saves the whales Ocean Wise, in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, has initiated the deployment of advanced underwater technology in the form of hydrophones to enhance whale detection capabilities in B.C. waters. Guest: Jessica Scott, Senior Manager of the Ocean Wise Whales Initiative Seg 7: Why are trial lawyers unhappy with BC's new legislation?  BC has introduced legislation for a single regulator for the legal profession. It will lump lawyers together with notaries and paralegals. The Law Society of BC is worried it will stifle independence. Guest: Michael Elliott, President of the Trial Lawyers Association of B.C. Seg 8: Why is BC developing new strains of shellfish? Oyster farming in BC faces challenges from ocean acidification and marine heatwaves, but researchers at Vancouver Island University are working to develop resilient new shellfish strains through a pedigree breeding program to create a fast growing, high surviving oyster environment in the province. The hospital in Old Fangak, South Sudan is extremely remote; it's a place that can only be accessed by boat, using the river Nile. The airstrip has been flooded for the past four years – flooding that has also destroyed crops and drowned cattle. Since April 2023, 501 cases of hepatitis E have been treated at the hospital, and 21 people – mainly women – have died. Now, doctors have launched a vaccination campaign that targets women and girls in communities that are up to eight hours by canoe from the nearest healthcare facility. Matt Fox, Professor of Global Health Epidemiology at Boston University, tells Claudia Hammond about the challenge of distributing vaccinations in such a challenging environment.Matt also brings news of a study that suggests that up to 10% of patients diagnosed with dementia might actually have cirrhosis of the liver. Cirrhosis can cause cognitive impairment with a very similar presentation to dementia but, crucially, it's reversible. A study of military veterans in the USA indicates that screening could prevent misdiagnosis.36% of all human rabies deaths in the world happen in India - 20,000 deaths every year. 97% of these deaths happen through infected dog bites. India has the largest number of stray dogs in the world and also the largest number of stray dog attacks - around 17 million dog bites annually. Chhavi Sachdev reports from Jaipur on an organisation that believes they're on their way to making the city rabies free.As Chinese new year is celebrated around the world, we look at a foodstuff that is synonymous with the celebrations – eggs. Minchao Jin is a Clinical Associate Professor at NYU Silver School of Social Work in Shanghai, and he tells Claudia about his work assessing whether a hard-boiled egg a day can help the nutrition of schoolchildren in poor, rural parts of China. And it's a frustrating week for journalist Mike Powell as he continues his journey towards a kidney transplant.Presenter: Claudia Hammond Producer: Ben Motley

Join us for a conversation about challenging carceral social work through the development and practice of an abolitionist social work. As demands to defund the police often look to social work as an alternative, panelists Tanisha "Wakumi" Douglas, Mimi Kim, Kirk "Jae" James and Cameron Rasmussen discuss the cautions of and possibilities for abolitionist social work. Social work, historically and today, has been deeply embedded in systems of carceral control. With social work's legacy of ties to policing and oppressive family regulation through the child welfare system, the social work community is actively imagining and working towards a social work rooted in abolition, turning to traditions of resistance that also characterize its history. This conversation, organized by the Network to Advance Abolitionist Social Work (NAASW) in partnership with Haymarket Books will look at challenging carceral social work through the development and practice of an abolitionist social work. The Network to Advance Abolitionist Social Work (NAASW) is a group of social workers from different parts of the US, building a year-long initiative to support abolitionist work in the field of social work. The initiative includes ongoing political education, research / knowledge generation around carceral and abolition social work, developing an online hub of abolitionist social work resources, and broader organizing and advocacy efforts to build abolitionist ideas and practices into social work. ---------------------------------------------------- Speakers: Tanisha “Wakumi” Douglas is the daughter of an undocumented immigrant who served 33 years in prison. Tanisha “Wakumi” Douglas has dedicated her life to building leadership among youth most impacted by mass incarceration and other oppressive systems. Wakumi is Co-founder/Executive Director of S.O.U.L. Sisters Leadership Collective, which builds leadership with systems-involved girls & TGNC youth, in both Miami and NYC. She has worked as a restorative justice circle keeper, social worker, community organizer, trainer, and popular educator for organizations including the Dream Defenders, Harlem Children's Zone and Children's Defense Fund. Her work has been featured in Huffington Post, NPR, and Miami New Times and her books include Sing a Rhythm, Dance a Blues (Morris), and Making Change (Kruse). Mimi Kim is the founder of Creative Interventions and a co-founder of INCITE! She is a long-time activist, advocate and researcher challenging gender-based violence at its intersection with state violence and creating community accountability, transformative justice and other community-based alternatives to criminalization. Mimi is also an Associate Professor of social work at California State University, Long Beach and co-editor in chief of Affilia. Her recent publications include “The Carceral Creep” and “From Carceral Feminism to Transformative Justice". Kirk “Jae” James is a Clinical Professor and Human Rights activist at the NYU Silver School of Social Work. He completed his doctorate from the School of Social Policy and Practice at The University of Pennsylvania on May 2013. Dr. James's primary research and publications focus on deconstructing issues related to mass incarceration. Cameron Rasmussen is a social worker, educator and facilitator. Our Guest: This week on BeREAL, Diana and Ednesha are joined by Dr. Michael Lindsey. The episode focuses on how to uplift student mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic.   Dr. Michael Lindsey is the Executive Director at the McSilver Institute for Poverty Policy and Research in the NYU Silver School of Social Work. Dr. Lindsey has multiple lines of research at the moment, but his work focuses on how to improve mental health experiences for the youth, especially in schools. He also works with moms who have PTSD and require mental health interventions through the program Save Mothers, Save Children. This Week on BeREAL: The episode begins as Dr. Lindsey explains the importance of improving student mental health. He views this effort as a way to break the cycle of generational poverty, and build a better future for people from all backgrounds. He ties this mission into the current day, and goes over the threats COVID-19 poses on student socialization. Schools play an important role in maintaining a healthy mental wellbeing for children. This comes from school sanctioned social workers, but also from everyday social interactions with classmates. How will this affect the students who currently have to do all their schoolwork online? Will mental health services dwindle because of online education, and are schools now just an educational institute? That is what Dr. Lindsey is here to discuss, how we can use virtual learning to be a tool of improving mental health instead of hindering it.    The conversation concludes as your hosts discuss the best way to administer adolescent therapy during these times. Due to stay at home orders, children are struggling to hold online therapy sessions in a place that is completely private. Dr. Lindsey is advocating for a collaboration of therapists, teachers, and parents to create the best environment for positive mental health stimulation at this time.    Thank you so much for tuning in this week to BeREAL. Be on the lookout for a brand new episode next week, but in the meantime, make sure to catch last week's episode if you haven' already.   As mentioned in the episode, if you would like to talk to a professional to get feedback on what is currently happening in your life, and if it warrants the involvement of a mental health professional please don't hesitate to call +1(888)-NYC-WELL.   Our Practice: For more information on The BeREAL Podcast and BeWELL Psychotherapy visit the links below.    To schedule an appointment text BeWELL to 484848 today    www.beher-now.com    facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Be.WELL.Psychotherapy/   instagram: https://www.instagram.com/bewell.psychotherapy/
