Discussion on all things related to military marriage to equip couples to strengthen their marriage and celebrate life’s most precious moments.
The Hearts & Stripes podcast is a true gem for military marriages. Bree, the host, provides invaluable insights and advice specifically tailored to military couples. Whether you're planning a wedding or contemplating the meaning of marriage, this podcast has something for everyone. Bree's expertise and loving craftsmanship shine through in every episode, making it absolutely worth checking out.
One of the best aspects of The Hearts & Stripes podcast is its relatability and inclusivity. As a dual military family myself, I greatly appreciate having a resource that speaks directly to my experiences and provides support specifically designed for military families. Bree fills a void in the wedding industry by featuring topics and stories that are often overlooked or not showcased in mainstream media. Furthermore, her interviews with experts provide valuable insights that can be applied to any marriage.
The only drawback of this podcast is that it may not appeal to those who are not part of the military community. While many of the topics discussed can still resonate with individuals outside of the military, some episodes may feel less relevant or relatable for them. However, for anyone connected to the military or interested in gaining insight into military marriages, this podcast is an excellent resource.
In conclusion, The Hearts & Stripes podcast is a must-listen for anyone in a military marriage or interested in understanding the unique challenges faced by military couples. Bree brings passion, energy, and authenticity to each episode, creating a space where listeners feel seen and validated. Her dedication to strengthening military marriages shines through in every conversation she has with guests and every piece of advice she shares. Regardless of whether you're part of the military community or not, there is much wealth to be gained from tuning into this podcast.

Welcome to Season 6 of the Hearts & Stripes podcast with encouragement from host, Bree Carroll. Today we are chatting with Kimberly Gold and dive into what caring for yourself looks like within your marriage and for yourself. Sometimes BUILDing your marriage starts with you first BUILDing Your Mental Health. Here are our highlights from this episode: Kimberly shares her milmarriage story that starts with sliding into DMs and a shift to work on physical health. She shares her journey of resentering, healing and recovering from a toxic work environment. “You can't be a good partner when you're not being good to yourself.” Stop using positive distractions. Be brave enough to acknowledge that you need help. Let's stop normalizing or silencing your trauma, hurt or feelings. Know your options. Look into different health care providers like Steven A Cohen's - Cohen Veterans Network at https://www.cohenveteransnetwork.org & providers highlighted on the Military Marriage Day app About Kimberly Born to a Korean woman who would become the first Korean female Chief Warrant Officer Five in the US Army, Kimberly prides herself on learning directly from her mother who taught her how to turn obstacles into opportunities. As a military kid, Kimberly has been assigned to seven military bases and can recall attending at least five schools. In elementary school, Kimberly stayed with a babysitter when both her parents deployed for the Gulf War. Kimberly recalls a time where she deeply disappointed her patriot mother by not accepting an appointment to the Air Force Academy. In the words of Kimberly, she was “DONE” with military life. To show her mother exactly how done she was, she went on to spend the next two decades serving military communities, even deploying to Kuwait, as a humanitarian and is happily married to a foreign born spouse who serves in the Army. Welcome to Season 6 of the Hearts & Stripes podcast with encouragement from host, Bree Carroll. Today Bree is reflecting on three big takeaways from her in-laws 50th wedding anniversary and vow renewal. A huge thank you to Edna & Stanley Carroll for your example and support. Happy 50th! Here are our highlights from this episode: Focus on Family - Everything blooms from a focus on marriage and family. Making sacrificial decisions to put the family in a better position was a big part of what made them successful. This takes selflessness and a big picture perspective as opposed to a short term gain. Focus on Faith - The Carrolls don't just say what they believe but also model it. They practice their beliefs and follow the order that the Bible outlines for families. It takes submission, surrender, trust, and intentionality. Focus on Selflessness - I love watching my inlaws love one another. They model showing up for one another when it matters most. This looks like taking vows seriously, especially the “for better or for worst” portion. This is something that isn't always easy but is necessarily for a sustainable relationship. Welcome to Season 6 of the Hearts & Stripes podcast with encouragement from host, Bree Carroll. Today we are chatting with Air Force veteran and author Patricia Q. Throughout our talk we go back to the basics of what is needed to thrive in your family and marriage relationship. Here are our highlights from this episode: Marriage First - Make time for you to connect with your spouse. Consider scheduling a day to yourselves during TDY or deployment reintegrations before spending time with the entire family. Individual Relationships - As parents try to foster individual relationships with your kids. Take them on one on one outings or join activities that they enjoy so you each have a special connection collectively and individually. Resources - I love that we went back to basics as Patricia shared the following resources: Family Readiness, Spouse Club, Chapel, First Sergeants and fellow service families. Remember When You Were New - If you see someone new, take the first step towards them to assist. More About Patricia: Patricia became a mom early in her military career and spent most of her career tackling both service and motherhood. Her husband was also a member of the United States Air Force. After retirement, Patricia worked as a contractor with the Air Force before deciding to professionally pursue her passion for writing. She published her first book in December 2022. She is currently working on a book of poetry and a companion book to her first book. We are closing out this Roller Coaster Season on Hearts & Stripes podcast with encouragement from host, Bree Carroll. Throughout Season 5 we are discussing what Roller Coaster Season is as we look at the highs and lows of service marriages. We've unpacked what thriving can look like through communication, highlighted new resources and today we are giving practical steps to enjoy the roller coaster ride. Strap In - We as a couple need to be committed to the ride and also safe along the way. Build Up - There is tons of anticipation as you build up to moments in your relationship. Communicate what these expectations are and how you are feeling along the way. Hands Up. Sometimes it's better to throw your hands up in surrender and excitement as opposed to white knuckling it the entire ride Smile. Take metal or physical pictures of the moments along the way so you can look back at the moments. Finish Together. Stay MilMarriage Strong! Welcome back to the Hearts & Stripes podcast. We are thrilled to have our MMD Ambassadors, Martin and Juvilyn Garcia joining us. Throughout Season 5 we are discussing what Roller Coaster Season is as we look at the highs and lows of service marriages. The Garcia's share how Valentine's Day critics spark a conversation on the need to continue dating your spouse, communicate using their love language and how they went from contemplating divorce to thriving together in their milmarriage. About Martin & Juvilyn: Dynamic duo, Juvilyn and Martin. Marine Corps Couple, married for almost 10 years and strong advocates for strong military marriages! We believe you have to thrive TOGETHER to make it. The Game Plan To Thrive Together: You have to show up for yourself before showing up for your spouse. Practice self-care, get a vision for yourself and your goals, and love yourself. Come together to support one another. Through partnership and teamwork we can build stronger relationships through encouraging one another within the marriage relationship. Acknowledge the ripple effect. The result of thriving together will impact those around you to engage in healthier relationships and collaborate with one another in the ways that you've modeled. About Sara: I have been an Air Force Reserve spouse for almost 10 years and have had the honor of supporting my husband and his squadron through 4 deployments so far. Welcome back to Hearts & Stripes podcast. We took a Spring Break that allowed us to evaluate what is next for Hearts & Stripes Podcast and today I'm excited to share what that looks like. First and foremost, thank you for being a listener, whether you've listened to one episode or binge listened to them all, you are appreciated. This podcast started as my way of bridging the gap between service couples and marriage resources. The platform has grown into a national holiday, Military Marriage Day (August 14th) and a way to serve couples to meet their relationship needs. I could have never imagined this would all come from starting a podcast. Moving forward we have decided to shift from a yearly seasonal podcast to releasing seasons around Military Marriage Day and potentially again around Valentine's Day. Here is what the new season of Hearts & Stripes has in store: Hearts & Stripes podcast is the official podcast of Military Marriage Day More engaging conversations with guest experts and average service couples sharing #milmarriage stories in an authentic way Greater focus on highlighting the resources in our MMD Resource Hub at https://www.militarymarriageday.com/resources In Depth conversations around the research and findings of our Military Marriage Survey and community marriage stats Today's Heart Track is Lover by Taylor Swift Listen to our Heart Tracks 3 playlist on Spotify https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3izcNRGc44G4rHt4qcJzUJ?si=eaef4f0267684ed0 MILITARY MARRIAGE RESOURCE GUIDE Learn more here: https://www.militarymarriageday.com/resources Let's Connect: To get even more on Hearts & Stripes podcast, resources, community and more head to https://www.breecarroll.com Connects with Bree on IG https://www.instagram.com/bcarrollevents

Happy Black History Month! Today, on Hearts & Stripes podcast we hope to spark some excitement to think about your legacy through dreaming. In this episode I'm invited all my service couples to dream again, individually and collectively. Here are some of our big takeaways: 1. Think about previous or new dreams personally and with your partner. What dream would yo like to reach for? 2. Your dream will help you visualize the path to that end goal. Are you ready to lean into the dream? Are you ready to do what it takes to make it happen? (Note: This is Phase 1 in the CARE Method - Carful Consideration) 3. Building a legacy and dreaming again will lead to you seeing more wins in your life! Dreaming is the first step, which is followed by action. 4. If your dream doesn't scare you, it's not big enough. Your dream isn't purpose focussed if it's all about you. 5. Dream BIG & build your legacy! Happy Valentine's Day Everyone!! Today we are talking about V for Valentine's. I'm sharing five things to keep in mind to strengthen your military marriage. Our goal here at Hearts & Stripes podcast is to continue to provide resources and tools to keep your relationship thriving. Keep in mind, it's never too late to start getting intentional about your marriage. Here are five Vs for Valentine's. Validate : Take the time to listen and validate your spouse. A great technique to use to accomplish this is active listening. Steps to active listening include listening, empathize, repeat what is shared, normalize their feelings with understanding and bonuses are being able to add body language, eye contact & touch. Vacation : Plan opportunities to getaway. This may look like an actual trip, staycation or even a mental getaway. It's not about the dollar amount, but rather valuing the time spent together. Vow : Valentine's Day is known as a day of love. Nothing says I love you like commitment and covenant. Reflecting and reminding one another of the vows that you have taken is a beautiful way to connect/reconnect or hit the reset button on your relationship. Value : Get intentional about showing your spouse that you value them. A great way to do this is by using their love language. Saying and showing your partner that they are valued is a great way to stay #milmarriagestrong Victory : When you win, I win & we win! It's no surprise that we are all about celebration here at Hearts & Stripes. Acknowledging the wins in your relationship is a tip that we absolutely love sharing. It shifts your focus as a couple to positivity and progress, which can help keep the momentum going. That move was difficult for Mollie as her first time away from family. She describes the transition as being very difficult. In hindsight she learned the importance of working together and supporting one another through transition especially when it's harder on one spouse more than another. Mattrice's Top Tips For Servant Leadership in Life & Marriage: Respect what your spouse is saying. Validate your partner's feelings and acknowledge what they are communicating to you. This will help make your spouse feel understood and loved. “Listen more and talk less.” Mollie shares how key communication is and creates dedicated time to listen. Making a point to set aside time to talk and share what's on one another plate is . Affirm and compliment your spouse. “It's important to lift one another up… He needs to hear those things.” Mollie highlights how they Marriage is a partnership. Being a team member, working out goals, capitalizing on strengths and respecting one another are key in marriage and leadership. “Everyone brings something to the table.” Mollie continues by stating,“Trust, integrity, communication, those are all a part of leadership and essential in our marriage.” Marriage & Leadership Advice: Embrace opportunity. Representing the Marine Corps we have Mattrice Williamson! Bio: Mattrice Williamson is a Hospitality Director and Special Events Manager. She has spent nearly three decades leading, coaching, mentoring and supporting military families. Leading, learning, and legacy building is how Mattrice has chosen to journey through military life with her Marine. Mattrice's personal and professional career path has afforded her the opportunity to work and serve with several non-profit organizations. Servant leadership is a lifestyle for Mattrice as she enjoys sharing her “TAGS” (Talent, Ability, Gift, and Skills) with others. As a 27-year Marine Corps spouse and mother of three, Mattrice has had the opportunity to navigate through multiple deployments, relocations, career challenges and life changes. She has been inspired by mentors in her life to find her voice and tell her story; she encourages others to do the same. Her purpose and passion drive her to continue leading and motivating others to be ‘mission ready' for whatever life brings. Living in Purpose on Purpose is their family motto. Top Points: - The MilMarriage Story Mattrice dated her husband to be through their college years and made the 2% club of Naval Academy couples to survive all four years. The couple met in church in the 90s and started as friends. She credits the strength of their relationship to their foundation of friendship and being great listeners. The Williamsons married in 1994. Mattrice's Top Tips For Servant Leadership in Life & Marriage: - Understanding and mutual respect are key. Know and respect who each person is as individuals. She notes the importance of being committed to the relationship and the journey as you operate with understanding & mutual respect. - Find mentorship. Seek it out and connect with others so you can ask, “will I survive this?”. Mattrice recalls that her mentors were in her life for a moment, but she soon became the mentor. Paying it forward is a part of being a leader. - “You have seasons in your life. Those seasons come and go.” Mattrice learned to step back and edit her life as the seasons change. She asked herself, “Who was I between the leaves of the tree?” Introspection is key at all seasons. - Mattrice's husband encouraged her to stop looking for the mentor she felt she needed and step into being that mentor and pouring into others. Her philosophy of servant leadership is modeled as she presently supports and mentors spouses. - As a Marine Corps spouse and mom she finds ways to connect with other people & families. As a family, the Williamsons are intentional about plugging in with Marine & Family Programs for orientations, programs and workshops. The more Mattrice learned and applied, the better she could connect by simply getting to know others. She became an advocate for our military resources, because she personally experienced loneliness in earlier years due to not knowing about what was available to her. Marriage & Leadership Advice: Resources are underutilized. When programs are not utilized they will go away as it's seen as a waste of resources. “If you know something that has worked for you, share it!...Join the club.”- Mattrice Williamson The responsibility is with each of us. You can be a leader right where you are by sharing the resources you are aware of. Happy Holidays! During this season of gratitude and joy we are going back and unwrapping the gems found in past episodes that we may need to listen to again before 2022. Juvilyn is the 2020-2021 Armed Forces Insurance MCRD San Diego Spouse of the Year & our Hearts & Stripes episode 50 guest that shared on effective communication in your marriage. Today we are recapping episode 054 with Nate & Felicia Wells : Two Careers, One Family! Bree's Takeaways Joint spouse relationships or mil to mil is such a challenge. I'm grateful to get a glimpse of this with my friends Nate & Felicia (we hooked them up btw, so you're welcome) and shout out to Nate's book of poetry. Talking to functional, communicate with your spouse, manage expectations, and creating a career plan that's complementary Dual military couples are encouraging. Both have a career and they are figuring out how to accomplish their goals together. Juvilyn's Takeaways Loved how their stories of how they met were so different and it was super entertaining. They are an extremely relatable couple. Watching dual military couples make it work is so commendable. They come together to make their family work. “Your family should be successful” - Felicia Wells Being on the same page, mutual respect & understanding is huge. This takes effective communication, not talking at your spouse, but talking to your spouse. Take ownership, apologize, be conscious of tone and really listen to your spouse. We fix what's broken versus throwing it away. Applying this to your marriage will make all the difference. Stay committed to your spouse. We want to see those hearts in the comments if this resonates with you. Happy New Year Everyone!!! What's next in 2022 for Hearts & Stripes?! Listen to the end and get a sneak peek at what's to come. Today we are recapping episode 048 Patrice Washington Connected in Marriage & Purpose! Bree's Takeaways This was our season 2 opening episode with my coach & client Patrice Washington and I love that she said the foundation of their relationship is friendship I personally live by the 6 pillars of wealth that Patrice teaches on, I'm a product of her coaching program and I love her book Redefine Wealth For Yourself. I've loved the Command the Stage program, Purpose to Platform and continue to work with her as I grow personally and professionally. Chase Purpose not Money = 6 Pillars of Wealth, which are Fit, People, Space, Faith, Work, Money. We will be working on our Fit & Faith Pillar as we go into 2022! Juvilyn's Takeaways As the 2020-2021 Armed Forces Insurance MCRD San Diego Spouse of the Year, this was our hardest duty station and it humbled me. I didn't realize how many people were watching and encouraged by my journey. It's important to have a friendship. Continuing to date your spouse is so crucial. If you don't invest in your spouse, your marriage won't thrive! Keep the spark alive. Flirt and compliment your spouse. Continuously get to know your spouse as things change over time. Juvilyn is the 2020-2021 Armed Forces Insurance MCRD San Diego Spouse of the Year & our Hearts & Stripes episode 50 guest that shared on effective communication in your marriage. Today we are recapping episode 056 Heather Campbell Fueling Your Life! Bree's Takeaways They allowed another couple to speak life into their marriage & accept the help of community at a time when she said “I didn't sign up for babies in the arctic” With huge stressors they went from survival mode to having to deal with the “holes in the boat” by effective communication and deciding to stay Grief is not just when you lose a person. We need to all grieve the losses or separation from friends, family, jobs and other areas of our lives that take an emotional toll. Food insecurity is such a real issue in our community and I love Heather's approach to meeting this need in our community with her background. Juvilyn's Takeaways It's easy to mask our issues in #milmarriage. Not taking care of those issues makes it even more difficult along the way. Survive mode = unmet needs. It takes longer and is harder to work through when we don't address those unmet needs when they show up. The first two years we were on the verge of divorce because we weren't addressing the issues within it. You can only be in survival mode for so long until the unmet needs end in an explosion. Be sure to subscribe to the my YouTube Channel to catch all of the action and behind the scenes footage. Subscribe HERE Married & Moving Part 1 Top Tips: - Effective Communicate Is Key Effective Communication: Effective communication is defined as verbal speech or other methods of relaying information that get a point across. It also means you are able to listen, understand, and take action on what your spouse is saying. - How To Survive The Purge Purge Tip 1: Ask Before You Purge - Give your spouse the opportunity to opt in or out of the purging process. They may appreciate the help and give you full reign or choose to not purge at all. Listen - Understand - Act accordingly Purge Tip 2: Discuss Your Options - If you have the time a yard sale or resale site is great. Your partner may not want to sell certain items or may choose to be involved in the sale as they are personally connected to it. If time doesn't permit, try to look into options like curb alert, donations to shelters, or Good Will. Purge Tip 3: Eat it! Plan to dine in and each out of the fridge and freezer to reduce throwing out tons of food. A neighbor may be willing to take some things so communicate a plan with them to help take your perishable items. Give yourself grace throughout & eat out as needed to reduce stress & boost moral within your relationships. - The Only Right Way Is The One You Agree On The goal is to PCS and still like one another. We are on the final week of our Faith & Marriage Series here on Hearts & Stripes podcast. In this episode I share how prayer can impact you thriving personally, in your marriage and with your legacy. I even get transparent with sharing my prayer for marriages as it aligns with the God's picture of marriage that is outlined in the Word. Yup, I was super nervous about sharing a prayer on the podcast, but if it blesses just one person then it was totally worth the knot in my stomach and momentary discomfort. Top Takeaways: Establish a prayer practice and faith relationship for yourself Pray together as a couple to grow closer to God as you grow closer to one another Start a legacy of faith through prayer with your family and friends Prayer For Marriage: My prayer for marriage is that we would each see marriage as another gift. An opportunity to draw nearer to God in His mission to be glorified and point others toward Himself. That we would embrace the chance to be sanctified, becoming more like Christ, because of the differences and challenges with our spouse. Growing our dependence on and likeness of Jesus every day. I pray our marriages would be so bizarrely unified (not perfect), fresh, and partnered with both our eyes on Christ that the world is drawn to ask "what are you looking at?" So that we, as 2 made 1, can reply with honor regarding the good news that brought us peace and core reason for our hope and ability to truly love one another.
