To quote Bob Dylan who wrote and sang the song "The Times They Are a-Changin'” let's have a real conversation about the fact that in times like these, it's tempting to default to vague, lofty ideals. But if we want to make meaningful progress, we need SMART goals—those that are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. For example, instead of saying, “We want to improve diversity,” a SMART goal might look like, “We will increase representation of underrepresented groups in leadership roles by 10% by the end of the year.” At the same time, let's not completely discount the value of non-SMART goals in the form of visionary thinking. Visionary thinking, the kind that may seem unmeasurable at first, is where innovation begins. By blending SMART goals with a willingness to dream big, we can maintain momentum and ensure that DEI is more than just a checkbox—it's a cornerstone of business strategy. Here's a hard truth: you might have all your ducks and data points lined up in a row and still not get your idea across if the person you're speaking with isn't in a place to receive it emotionally, psychologically, or factually. You've probably heard the phrase, “Meet people where they are,” and that's exactly what I mean here. If someone is not ready to hear your message, pushing it on them can result in frustration for both parties. Instead, take a reflective, rather than reactive approach. Ask yourself, “Am I focusing on being RIGHT, or am I focusing on having my message RECEIVED?” It's not about winning. It's about MUTUAL understanding.
