Hello Community!  Having a discussion about diversity—by whatever name you choose to call it—is not an option. Your employees, customers, and stakeholders are watching, and in many cases, waiting. You don't have to have all the answers, but you do have to be willing to engage. The most successful organizations are those whose leaders are willing to lean into complexity and seek wisdom from their peers. When companies face industry disruption, they don't rely on gut feelings—they consult advisors, peer groups, and experts to chart a way forward. Why should this conversation be any different? Today we're going to get comfortable with discomfort during our final Real Conversation from the C-Suite with my guests, Leo Bottary, author of the newly released book, Peernovation Second Edition, Forged by CEO Forums, Perfected For Teams, and Jim Roberts, author of the peer-reviewed article, DEI is Dead, Long Live DEI.Connect with me!Web - https://www.doctoranita.com/YouTube - https://bit.ly/DrAnitaYouTubeLinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/anita-polite-wilson-ph-d-77695b/

This week, in episode 130, Sarah Segal, Jay Goltz, and special guest Leo Bottary have a hype-free conversation about why peer-advisory groups like Vistage, YPO, and EO can be life-changing for business owners and why they're not for everyone. Sarah has been wondering if they're for her. Jay, who's been in six different peer groups, says it can be worth the price of admission just to see how other owners run their businesses—but there are reasons he keeps leaving the groups he joins. And Leo is a former Vistage employee who has written multiple books on peer groups and has built a related consulting practice. Surprisingly few business owners belong to a peer group. Are they missing out? All three of my guests suggest questions to consider before deciding for yourself.

Birds of a feather flock together. We're all in the same boat. Great minds think alike. While just figures of speech to some, they reflect a simple truth--it's the company we keep that often determines the level of personal growth and professional success we achieve in life.  Business leaders exchange information and ideas. They network to make deals and build partnerships. They work together to optimize best practices, and they reach out to leaders outside their companies to accelerate growth. Simply put, CEOs and business leaders provide value to one another that they can't find anywhere else. In The Power of Peers, authors Leon Shapiro and Leo Bottary introduce peer advantage, a concept that transcends peer influence. This is what CEOs and business leaders experience when they are more selective, strategic, and structured in the way they engage their peers. Peer advantage gives CEOs the insights to compete and the courage to act. The Power of Peers features stories of business leaders from a range of industries to illustrate the five essential factors for peer advantage, how it impacts personal growth and why it has proven so effective in helping leaders identify future opportunities and challenges. It's what top, growth-oriented executives have relied upon for decades to be successful in business and in life.

Are you a fan of any team sports? Perhaps you have already watched one of the NBA games, or maybe a 90-minute football game in FIFA. What do you think makes a champion team? Is it the “superstar” players? Or have you been part of a sports team, a school club, a group project, or volunteer work? Do you remember what it felt like working with a team? The saying “two is better than one” perfectly describes what it means to be in a group. Working together with your peers makes the work more efficient and effective. Host Taryn Winter Brill sits down with author Leo Bottary to discuss his book, What Anyone Can Do: How Surrounding Yourself with the Right People Will Drive Change, Opportunity, and Personal Growth. In this book, Bottary looks at all the people we surround ourselves and how those people are instrumental in helping us along the way. Bottary says that, “The more positive people we can surround ourselves with and the more that we tap into that incredible power that's all around us, the more effective we're going to be as individuals.” But, success is more than just surrounding ourselves with the right people. He states, “You have to be clear about what it is that you want” and what needs to happen in order to make things possible. One thing that's changing in the age of social media, Bottary argues, is that people aren't paying attention to the number of followers or friends; instead, they're looking to consciously engage people with deeper conversations, in smaller numbers. In any team, you matter because nobody but you can bring what you bring to the table.  We are not just fellow employees, or teammates. But rather, we are fellow human beings.    "When we look at assessments, not only for ourselves, but when we start sharing our results with other people and start looking at theirs, we can start appreciating people's differences as real gifts. They are gifts to the team, that they see the world differently, that they have different talents, that they have different ways of contributing to the team. Now probably more than every the issue of teams has become in question.  Before the pandemic when everyone worked in the office, it was much easier to be a team since we were all sitting in the same room and face to face.  But today with the hybrid of people at home and at work teams have become...well...let's just say a bit more difficult.  Thankfully Leo Bottary is with us on this episode of A New Direction to help understand that whether we are remote or in the same room, or some combination we can still build high performance teams.  How?  Well as Leo Bottary says best..."The Power of 'WE' starts with 'ME'".  Are you "all-in".  because that is who it begins with...YOU! Leo Bottary's latest book is entitled "Peernovation: What Peer Advisory Groups Can Teach Us About Building High-Performance Teams"  The book is a beautiful complement of research, experience, and practical application.  The forward is by Jeffery Hayzlett and starts the book off right understanding how we often live so disconnected that we have to intentionally get reconnected if we are truly going to be successful.  Peernovation points out 5 factors that contribute the most high performance teams: Having the Right People in the room who share a clarity of purpose Psychological safety. Be committed to being highly productive. Have a sense of personal responsibility/ accountability to the team members. Be led by a servant leader who serves as the steward of the other four factors The book is an outstanding read, you will love the show! Leo Bottary, author of Peernovation: What Peer Advisory Groups Can Teach Us About Building High Performing Teams, discovered the concept of group learning during graduate school. While in a room with mid-to-senior level executives, he realized everyone had amassed a wealth of knowledge that was there for the taking. That scenario became a catapult for the power of collective learning, writing several books about the importance of peers, and even starting a podcast. Peers, he says, are important to assess and develop high-performing teams within any organization and he discusses the 5 factors that are common to that type of team. Bottary says that “the five factors are a framework, not a prescription” and advises that every leader should know their organizations better and identify what will work well within their culture. As a sports fan, Bottary cites an example of knowing what works for the organization by mentioning the famed head coach of the University of Connecticut’s women’s basketball team, Geno Auriemma. As one of the most successful sports programs in the country, men’s or women’s, Coach Auriemma credits the team’s success with finding those players who are great teammates, not just talented, and creating a culture of accountability. The same principle should apply to corporations everywhere. Every organization needs to determine what the “it” factor is and what creates success. Bottary encourages leaders struggling to find the “it” factor to use their biggest asset: current team members. Once they ask their teams, Bottary says, leaders experience one of the biggest learning moments as a result. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Leo Bottary is a seasoned author and an all-rounder when it comes to writing, publishing, and book marketing.  Based in California, Leo helps leaders build high performing teams and groups. His latest book, Peernovation, is less than six months old and has received dozens of five-star reviews.  Peernovation follows on from Leo's earlier books—What Anyone Can Do, and The Power of Peers—about leveraging the power of peers in business and in life.   Peernovation is designed for leaders who want to coach engaged, adaptable, and higher-performing teams. It includes Leo's lessons from more than a decade of academic research, fieldwork, and personal experiences throughout North America and the United Kingdom.  Leo joins Published Author Podcast host Josh Steimle to discuss the writing of this book, and everything he has learned about writing and publishing.   TOP TAKEAWAY: DON'T OVERTHINK YOUR BOOK, JUST GET STARTED  Recognizing that many people who want to write a book don't do a lot of writing, he says: “Oftentimes people feel like the idea of writing a book is just so monumental, and they can't commit to it. If you feel passionate about what you want to write about, no matter how bad, just start writing it. Don't try to overthink it. Just get into it and you'll find your way.”  Leo approaches book writing in stages, starting first with an idea or theme. He says it's akin to building a house.   “It's like I'm framing a house . . .kind of doing the architecture first before I start moving the furniture in.” With the outline in place, he crafts out the chapters and while doing so he ensures a narrative is in place that tells the overall story in the book.   Much of Leo's work is based on research and he had a lot of data to incorporate into his book. For this reason, his writing process can be intense. He notes that: “It's easy to get three quarters of the way through a book and then start losing a little steam, and not feeling that level of rigor about at all.”  He handled this by taking breaks and then going back to his book to ensure that he incorporated lessons from his first two books and really paid attention to each chapter, ensuring that it delivered its content in a powerful way.   Leo also believes that for books like Peernovation that serve as workshop handbooks or how-to books like Peernovation, it's important to keep the focus firmly on the reader: “Not everyone sits and sits down and reads a book cover to cover. Nor do they read the chapters in order,” notes Leo. “They could read three chapters, and then pick it up two months later. So the way you write it has to accommodate for that.”  THE HYBRID PUBLISHING MODEL  Leo has pursued mostly self-publishing with his books. And for the most recent book, Peernovation, the publishing model was closer to a hybrid model, through Archway, the self-publishing arm of Simon and Schuster.   Leo was satisfied with their service menu, selected what he wanted, and notes that he had a lot of flexibility with the book's editing, title, cover design, release date, and marketing.  He's a strong advocate of working with a professional editor who would ensure the book was in APA style and met true publishing standards.   BOOK PROMOTION DURING A PANDEMIC  Leo has an extensive network, and an email list in the thousands, so he's well-positioned to promote Peernovation during COVID-19.  He'll do a virtual media tour which includes radio and podcasts. He has his own podcast on C-Suite Radio. “There are a number of three things across several platforms that I'm doing to just keep the book out there, extend the reach.”  Sharing knowledge and empowering people are huge motivators for Leo. To this end, he is pricing his paperback at $12.99 and the ebook at only $3.99. “I'd like for team leaders to see it as incredibly affordable, and say: ‘Great, I'm going to get a book for every one of my team members,” he adds.  At the end of the Peernovation, Leo has also included a PDF at the end of Peernovation that people can get access for free, and his website offers free resources, too.    Leo says the ideal scenario for his book is that years from now peer innovation will be something that a lot of companies will bring into their organization.   “It isn't really about trying to make money from the book, or trying to make a killing in the consulting business or anything like that,” says Leo. “It's really about believing in something, and making sure that I want to get it into people's hands so that they can benefit from themselves.”  LINKS  Twitter  Facebook  Instagram  Youtube  LinkedIn  LeoBottary.com  SUBSCRIBE TO PUBLISHED AUTHOR PODCAST  If you enjoyed this episode, don't forget to subscribe. What Anyone Can Do with Leo Bottary & Randy Cantrell

Peernovation: What Peer Advisory Groups Can Teach Us About Building High-Performing Teams by Leo Bottary is Leo’s latest book. It's Leo's third book following, The Power Of Peers (coauthored with Leon Shapiro) and What Anyone Can Do.  On today’s show, we make observations of what we can all learn from this week's presidential election in America. Leo's Peernovation framework was created to help us foster high-performing teams in our organizations. But this week the Peernovation framework is suitable for our country's need to collectively come together in hopes we can more effectively tackle the challenges before us --- and to take full advantage of the opportunities we might otherwise overlook. The message of the book is useful for our businesses, our organizations, our teams, our families, and yes, even countries. The power of WE begins with YOU. Good news! Leo is heading to San Antonio to Gameday Media to begin narration on the new book. He'll be working with owner/founder John Largent to get the audiobook released in early to mid-December, just in time for the holidays. #ThePowerOfWEBeginsWithYOU #Peernovation For ideas on why leaning on your peers and serving one another at this critical time has never been more important, listen to our podcast.  If you have questions or ideas for us, contact us today. In this episode I'm speaking with Leo Bottary, an accomplished author, keynote speaker, adjunct professor, and fellow podcaster. Leo is a thought leader on the topic of “peer advantage”; The idea of engaging peers in a way that's selective, strategic and structured. His latest book is called “What anyone can do: How surrounding yourself with the right people will drive change, opportunity and personal growth”. Leo makes the case for harnessing the power of relationships in order to maximize our own potential accomplishments, and that these relationships are a two-way street. The title “What anyone can do” is based on his belief that success and happiness do not depend on superhuman effort, but rather, come to those who possess the discipline to do the little everyday things of which we're all capable, but that most of us won't do. We talk about education, and the disconnect between how humans learn and how we evaluate learning. Leo makes the case that, the old trope that we should ‘never discuss religion or politics' is actually hurting our ability to understand important issues. We talk about the declining trust in government, media and corporations, and what that means for how we connect with each other. We advocate for asking more questions and making less statements. And finally, Leo makes a profoundly important observation for why younger generations are never as bad as the older generation makes them out to be.

Most of us don’t seek advice or reach out to others for help very easily. In part, it’s because we’re conditioned to see life as an individual endeavor rather than a team sport. Or because we believe that asking for help makes us look weak or incapable. We regard self-help as by-yourself-help. News flash: no one in the history of the world has ever achieved any level of happiness or success totally by themselves. In his 1976 book The Long Run Solution, Joe Henderson suggested that becoming truly accomplished at running (or at anything) doesn’t typically require us to perform superhuman feats. In fact, success is frequently realized by those who simply do the things anyone can do that most of us never will. In What Anyone Can Do, with the help of Leo Bottary’s Year of the Peer podcasts guests (and playful illustrations by Ryan Foland), you’ll discover that if you surround yourself with the right people, you’ll do the things anyone can do far more often. And when you do that, you and the people around you will realize more of what you want out of business and life. It’s that simple. The Power of Peers (2016) made a strong case for how and why formal peer groups are so effective. This book steps outside the formal peer group arena to examine all the important relationships we have in our lives (parents, teachers, spouses, mentors, children, mentees, etc.) and provides a practical approach and specific framework for harnessing their power for your benefit (and theirs). It’s what anyone can do. You’re anyone, right? Link to the book: https://amzn.to/2RBTxOv

“Show me your friends and I will show you your future” Mark Ambrose. We all have friends, peers and associates that are part of our everyday life. Very often they provide us with support, they motivate us and give us a sense of community, but if we do not surround ourselves with the right people, it can also affect us negatively and hold us back. Speaker Jim Rohn says “You are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with” and if these people are not helping you focus in the direction you want to go, then maybe you should not spend time with them. But very often leaders or aspiring leaders do really think about this. The old quote “It's lonely at the top” reinforces the thought in a lot of leaders that they are alone and have to do everything alone, but this is not true. There are a lot of ways to find great peer groups and communities where you can learn and grow. This episode explores the power of peer groups and how they can help you navigate your career.

The world is filled with so much information and we’re absorbing them from all aspects of our lives every single day. Because of this, we tend to just skip from one information to another, not stopping to reflect and take it in. Chief Envisioner at TELUS, Dan Pontefract, proposes for us to rethink our thinking. We are being busy without action, so to counteract that, we need to optimize the way we think in order to balance reflection and action to enhance our critical thinking skills as well as creativity. There are so many things in the world that holds us back from achieving a lot of things. One of those is the environment. The people we surround ourselves have a huge impact in our lives. Author, keynote speaker, and workshop facilitator Leo Bottary touches on the power of peers and on how to determine what peer groups are for you. He talks about the importance of knowing what it is that we’re trying to do and from there, finding the people who aligns with you. Love the show?  In this episode, Christina Martini and Leo Bottary discuss: How do you know when a formal peer group is a good fit and when it isn’t? Let’s get personal – can you share some of the most significant peer group experiences you have had – both positive and negative? What are some of the biggest takeaways you have from your experiences doing this work? You have now written 2 books – The Power of Peers and What Anyone Can Do.  Tell us about them and what made you decide to write them. Key Takeaways: Each person in your life contributes to you in different ways. It’s easier to prepare for something if you have someone along the way pushing you through. Asking others for help holds you accountable to accomplish your goal. Take a goal and break it into smaller pieces for smaller victories along the way. “You realize how powerful it is that you actually complete your goal instead of just getting 70% of the way there.” —  Leo Bottary   About Leo Bottary: Leo Bottary is a keynote speaker, author, workshop facilitator, adjunct professor, and thought leader on the topic of peer advantage.  Peer influence is something you’ve experienced for your entire life, often without a great deal of thought or effort.  Peer advantage is what can be realized when you engage your peers in a manner that’s more selective, strategic, and structured.   If you want to grow as an individual, collaborate more effectively, become a better leader, and prepare your organization to meet the challenges of the future, then enlist a group of peers you respect and who are committed to the same goals and watch what happens! During his tenure at Vistage Worldwide, Leo directed a thought leadership initiative on the power of peers in business, which resulted in a book he coauthored with Leon Shapiro titled:   (https://www.amazon.com/Power-Peers-Company-Leadership-Success/dp/1629561207/ref=tmm_hrd_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr=) . The premise of the book is as simple as it is powerful.  Who you surround yourself with matters and, because of this, business leaders can help each other in ways they just won’t find anywhere else.  It’s essentially provides a look into how and why formal peer groups are so powerful. Leo’s new book (to be published and released in September) is titled: What Anyone Can Do: How Surrounding Yourself with the Right People Will Drive Change, Opportunity, and Personal Growth.  With the help of Leo’s Year of the Peer podcast guests (and illustrations by  Ryan Foland (https://www.ryanfoland.com/) ), you’ll discover that success isn’t enjoyed only by people possessing superhuman qualities; it’s also realized by those who enlist the support of others to help them do the things anyone can do that most of us never will.  The narrative steps outside the formal peer group arena to examine all the important relationships we have in our lives (parents, teachers, spouses, mentors, children, mentees, etc.) and how if we enlisted their support more frequently and pointedly, we would all do the things anyone can do far more often.   Connect with Leo Bottary: Website: https://leobottary.com/ (https://leobottary.com/) Connect with Christina Martini: Twitter: @TinaMartini10 (https://twitter.com/TinaMartini10?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor) Website: www.paradigmshiftshow.com (http://www.paradigmshiftshow.com/) DLA Piper: https://www.dlapiper.com/en/us/people/m/martini-christina-l/ (https://www.dlapiper.com/en/us/people/m/martini-christina-l/) LinkedIn: Christina Martini (https://www.linkedin.com/in/christinamartini) Email: christinamartini.paradigmshift@gmail.com (mailto:christinamartini.paradigmshift@gmail.com)   Show notes by Podcastologist: Jessie Taylor Audio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. Why people don’t capitalize on mentoring relationships. Why who you surround yourself with matters. How do you know when you are surrounded by people who help you be the best you can be.   Key Takeaways: The more leaders can collaborate with each other the more their employees will learn to collaborate with each other. It’s important to ask those around you for support and to give support in return. Sharing hard things with those around you will help you connect.
