About 45 minutes south of Charlotte, North Carolina sits a unique test facility measuring over 40,000 square feet and equipped with 105 electric fans. In August 2011, hurricane Irene destroyed towns up and down the east coast. While Irene headed north up the coast, it weakened to a tropical storm making landfall in southern New Jersey then again in Brooklyn, NY. What happened next devastated many small towns as Irene transitioned to an extratropical cyclone striking Vermont.
