Community Health: Flu Season Survival Guide

Why This Year's Influenza Outbreak Demands Your Attention Virginia finds itself in the dark red zone on the CDC's influenza activity map, signaling a "very high" level of flu cases sweeping across the Commonwealth. This alarming development prompts Janet Michael, host of The Valley Today, to reach out to Dr. Jeff Feit for an urgent conversation about protecting communities during this particularly aggressive flu season. Dr. Feit, who serves as Valley Health's Chief Population and Community Health Officer and Chief Medical Information Officer, brings a unique perspective to the discussion. As a family physician who spent twelve years practicing in Page County before moving into healthcare leadership, he understands both the clinical realities of influenza and the broader public health implications facing Virginia's communities. An Early and Aggressive Start The numbers tell a concerning story. Currently, Virginia ranks in the second-highest category out of twelve gradients measuring influenza-like illness (ILI). In contrast, this time last year, the state sat three categories lower. Moreover, while last season's flu activity peaked in mid-February, this year's surge arrived much earlier, catching many residents off guard. "We're overshooting," Dr. Feit explains, noting that the CDC tracks ILI rather than confirmed diagnoses because not everyone gets tested. This measurement captures people presenting with observable flu symptoms—body aches, fevers, headaches, nausea, and congestion—providing a more accurate picture of community spread than test results alone. Furthermore, the tracking method resembles the wastewater monitoring used during the COVID-19 pandemic. Instead of counting individual cases, health officials measure the percentage of people walking through medical facilities who display flu-like symptoms, offering insight into how prevalent the virus has become in communities across Virginia. Understanding the Viral Landscape Influenza doesn't exist in isolation this winter. Instead, three major respiratory viruses circulate simultaneously: seasonal flu, COVID-19, and RSV (respiratory syncytial virus). While COVID-19 shows less seasonal predictability in its first five years, influenza remains decidedly seasonal, arriving in late fall and lasting through early spring. RSV, once simply categorized as "just another cold" in adults, now receives more attention because healthcare providers can test for it easily. In young children, however, RSV causes serious illness and can lead to scarring that triggers asthma symptoms for years. Consequently, the medical community now tracks RSV alongside flu and COVID as part of the winter respiratory illness trio. Dr. Feit emphasizes the importance of basic prevention strategies that became politicized during the pandemic but remain scientifically sound. "Before COVID, we used to say obvious things like, 'Hey, it's respiratory season. Wash your hands a lot,'" he notes. He recommends being conscious of shared surfaces—particularly those signature pens at pharmacies—and washing hands before touching your face, since that's how respiratory viruses typically enter the body. The Flu Shot: Separating Fact from Fiction Each year, scientists formulate a new trivalent flu vaccine targeting the three strains they predict will dominate six months ahead. Typically, two components target Influenza A (the more severe form) and one targets Influenza B. This year, concerns have emerged about whether the vaccine adequately matches the circulating H3N2 variant, though early studies from other countries suggest typical protection levels remain intact. Nevertheless, Dr. Feit stresses that vaccine effectiveness exists on a spectrum rather than as an all-or-nothing proposition. "Very few things in the world are about all or none," he explains. "We live in a world of probabilities." While the flu shot prevents illness roughly 40-50% of the time, it proves even more effective at preventing hospitalizations and deaths—outcomes that matter most. The CDC recommends flu vaccination for everyone over six months old. Additionally, people over 65 should receive a stronger formulation, though the regular vaccine still provides protection if the enhanced version isn't available. The vaccine remains widely accessible at pharmacies, doctor's offices, urgent care centers, and other convenient locations. Debunking the "Flu Shot Gives You Flu" Myth One persistent misconception continues to discourage vaccination: the belief that flu shots cause influenza. Dr. Feit tackles this myth head-on, explaining that most flu vaccines contain inactivated virus, making it impossible to contract influenza from the injection. Recipients may experience arm pain or occasionally feel unwell due to their immune system's response, but they cannot develop actual flu from the standard shot. However, one exception exists. The nasal spray flu vaccine contains a live attenuated (weakened) virus, which can occasionally cause mild flu symptoms. For this reason, Dr. Feit recommends the injectable vaccine over the nasal spray. Many people who claim they "got the flu from the flu shot" likely experienced one of two scenarios: either mild immune system activation that caused temporary discomfort, or they contracted a different respiratory virus around the same time. True influenza, Dr. Feit emphasizes, rarely gets confused with other illnesses once you've experienced it. Recognizing Real Influenza "The way you know somebody has the flu as a doctor is they walk in and they say, 'I feel like I got hit by a truck,'" Dr. Feit shares. This vivid description captures the severity that distinguishes influenza from common colds. Classic influenza symptoms include severe body aches, high fever, chills, and intense headaches. Patients often report that even their hair hurts due to scalp sensitivity. Unlike a cold, which typically causes congestion and mild discomfort, influenza renders people truly miserable for about a week. Importantly, influenza poses serious risks beyond discomfort. The 1918 Spanish flu pandemic, which killed millions, notably affected many young, healthy people. Scientists theorize this occurred either because strong immune responses proved deadly or because older individuals possessed partial immunity from a previous flu strain decades earlier. Regardless of the mechanism, the historical lesson remains clear: influenza can kill, and it doesn't discriminate by age. The Critical 48-Hour Window When flu symptoms strike, timing becomes crucial. Antiviral medications prove highly effective against influenza, but only if taken within the first 48 hours of symptom onset. Therefore, anyone who spikes a fever and experiences severe body aches should seek medical attention within 24 hours to receive these medications and recover faster. Without antiviral treatment, patients typically suffer through a miserable week before gradually improving. However, approximately 5% of flu patients develop a dangerous complication: bacterial pneumonia. Dr. Feit describes this as a "double hump illness"—patients get sick, start recovering, feel better for a while, then suddenly spike another fever and develop a cough. This pattern signals bacterial pneumonia requiring different treatment. Virtual Care and Modern Solutions Valley Health continues developing virtual care options that balance convenience with diagnostic accuracy. Dr. Feit acknowledges the challenge: clinically distinguishing flu from COVID, RSV, or bacterial sinus infections without point-of-care testing proves difficult. The organization works toward a hybrid model where virtual consultations can direct patients to drop-in testing locations. "The doctor on your phone might say, 'Hey, I think this is probably COVID. Why don't you stop in our clinic and get tested and then we can treat you,'" Dr. Feit explains. During peak flu season, however, virtual diagnosis becomes more reliable. When influenza saturates the community and a patient presents with classic symptoms—102-degree fever, headache, severe body aches—the probability of influenza reaches approximately 95%, making treatment without testing more reasonable. Beyond Conventional Medicine While discussing prevention, Dr. Feit offers a measured endorsement of one herbal remedy: elderberry extract. Unlike vitamin C megadosing, which lacks solid evidence despite historical claims, elderberry extract has demonstrated effectiveness against influenza virus in test-tube studies conducted in Israel. The preparation, sold as Sambucol in the United States, represents the one herbal supplement Dr. Feit feels comfortable recommending for flu prevention, though he notes the evidence base remains limited. Looking Ahead: Rural Health Transformation Beyond immediate flu concerns, Dr. Feit shares exciting news about long-term community health improvements. Virginia recently received the first installment of a five-year Rural Health Transformation Grant, part of a $50 billion federal fund. The Commonwealth expects to receive nearly $1 billion over five years, money that will support rural healthcare infrastructure, provider training, and innovative technology solutions for transportation-challenged populations. This funding represents a silver lining in challenging times, offering resources to address food insecurity, housing instability, and healthcare access in Virginia's most vulnerable communities. Taking Action Now As flu season intensifies across Virginia, Dr. Feit's message remains clear: get vaccinated if you haven't already, practice basic hygiene, and seek prompt medical attention if symptoms develop. The vaccine won't change to match any viral evolution this season, so waiting no longer makes sense. For those around pregnant women, vaccination becomes even more critical, as pregnancy significantly increases flu severity. Similarly, families should consider that vaccination reduces household transmission—meaning perhaps only one or two family members get sick instead of everyone, allowing healthy members to care for ill ones. Ultimately, this flu season serves as a reminder that respiratory viruses remain serious public health threats requiring both individual action and community-wide prevention efforts. By understanding the science, recognizing symptoms early, and accessing treatment promptly, Virginians can navigate this challenging season more safely.

Today, Rethink Ireland and the Vodafone Foundation have announced five community groups as recipients of the 'Hi Digital Fund', a digital literacy fund worth €540,000 committed to supporting projects that will deliver initiatives to bridge the digital divide among older adults in Ireland. The 'Hi Digital Fund' is a two-year fund open to nonprofit organisations offering social innovations within communities that enhance digital literacy and inclusion for adults aged 65 and above, ensuring no one is left behind. The initiative is created by Rethink Ireland - and supported by The Vodafone Foundation, private donors and the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht via the Dormant Accounts Fund. Launched in April this year, and following a competitive application process, the first recipients of this fund were announced at an event in Dublin today, attended by Jerry Buttimer T.D., Minister of State at the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht. Each awarded organisations are designed to meet the unique needs of older people within their communities: These are: Roscommon Leader Partnership Kerry Community Youth Service University of Limerick Rehab Group Citizens Information Services Speaking at the announcement, Jerry Buttimer, Minister of State at the Department of Rural and Community and the Gaeltacht said: "This fund is a great example of Government, philanthropy and community partners working together to close the digital gap for older people. Backed by the Dormant Accounts Fund, these projects will deliver real, local impact - helping thousands to access services, stay safe online and stay connected." Discussing the issue of digital exclusion in society, Deirdre Mortell, CEO of Rethink Ireland, said: "Digital exclusion is a silent crisis. Through this fund, we're reconnecting people to essential services and reducing isolation. It's a model for public-private collaboration in social innovation. What's been especially rewarding is seeing the incredible work already happening in communities. These groups are deeply embedded in their local areas and already making a significant difference. What's even more remarkable is the ambition they've shown: with this funding, they're ready to scale, innovate, and reach thousands more older adults. It's a privilege to support such passionate changemakers who are helping older people live more connected, confident lives." This announcement comes as recent stats highlight the ongoing need to support older adults in Ireland as they navigate an increasingly digital world. Ireland's digital literacy levels for those aged 65 and older are among the lowest in Europe, with just 19% considered digitally literate, compared to the EU average of 25%. This gap is even more pronounced in rural areas, where access and confidence are limited. According to the CSO (October 2024), 41% of people over the age of 75 have never used the internet, while 12% of those aged 60-74 remain digitally excluded. It is anticipated that over the next two years, more than 13,000 older adults across Ireland will benefit from the Hi Digital Fund through the five winning recipients. Speaking on the growing digital divide, Liz Roche, Head of Vodafone Foundation, added: "We believe everyone should have access to the digital world, regardless of age or ability. This fund enables local organisations to deliver real impact, helping older adults gain confidence and independence through technology. I'm genuinely excited to see these programmes come to life across the country. From UL's Digital Volunteer programme, which looks to expand its initiative to other nearby universities, to more nationally spread programmes like Rehab Group's Digital Bridges and the Digital Help Service via Citizens Information Centres, the reach and relevance of these initiatives are extraordinary. It's a powerful reminder that digital inclusion isn't just about access, it's about dignity, connection, and opp...

MDJ Script/ Top Stories for December 3rd Publish Date:  December 3rd Commercial: From the BG Ad Group Studio, Welcome to the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast.    Today is Wednesday, December 3rd and Happy Birthday to Andy Williams I’m Keith Ippolito and here are the stories Cobb is talking about, presented by Times Journal Four Cobb schools earn STEAM/STEM certifications Meet Michael McNeely, Mableton’s newest councilman Gas prices dip following Thanksgiving, predicted to stay down through holidays All of this and more is coming up on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen and subscribe!  BREAK: INGLES 3 STORY 1: Four Cobb schools earn STEAM/STEM certifications Cobb Schools are buzzing with opportunities for students to dive into STEM and STEAM—science, technology, engineering, arts, and math. And now, four more schools have joined the ranks of those earning certifications in these fields. South Cobb Early Learning Center and Ford Elementary snagged STEAM certifications, while Betty Gray Middle and Walton High earned STEM honors. “It’s been a joyful, messy journey,” said Marilyn Thomas, director of South Cobb Early Learning Center. “Our kids, teachers, and families all came together—building, experimenting, creating art. It’s hands-on learning at its best.” With over 50 certified schools, Cobb’s commitment to innovation is clear. Just ask the students at Tritt Elementary, who recently celebrated Girl-Powered Robotics Day. STORY 2: Meet Michael McNeely, Mableton’s newest councilman Michael McNeely, newly elected to Mableton’s City Council, is all about service—clear, honest, and hands-on. “I’d rather over-communicate than leave people guessing,” he says. McNeely, who moved to Mableton in 2019, has a long history of giving back. From his days as an Eagle Scout to serving in the Army National Guard and working in public safety for over two decades, he’s built a life around helping others. “It’s in my blood,” he says. Now, as District 2’s councilman, he’s focused on smart redevelopment, public safety, and creating spaces that bring the community together. Think parks, sidewalks, and maybe even a new community center. “We’ve got work to do,” McNeely says, “but Mableton’s got the people and the heart to make it happen.” STORY 3: Gas prices dip following Thanksgiving, predicted to stay down through holidays  Georgia drivers are catching a break at the pump—finally. After the Thanksgiving travel rush, gas prices have dipped, with the state average sitting at $2.82 per gallon as of Monday, according to AAA. That’s about $42 to fill up a 15-gallon tank. Prices are 5 cents lower than last week but still 2 cents higher than last month. And if you’re in Cobb County? You’re paying a bit more—$2.89 per gallon. The priciest spots? Savannah ($2.88), Atlanta ($2.86), and Macon ($2.85). Meanwhile, Dalton drivers are smiling at $2.68. Nationally, gas has dropped to $3, the lowest since May 2021, thanks to low crude oil prices and sluggish demand. AAA predicts prices could stay low through the holidays. For EV drivers, no changes—public charging still averages 38 cents per kilowatt hour. Want to save? AAA suggests fuel rewards programs, paying cash (some stations charge more for credit), and driving smarter. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.799.6810 for more info.  We’ll be right back. Break: INGLES 3 STORY 4: Cobb fraternal organization recognized as best in Georgia The Omicron Mu Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, better known as the Cobb County Alphas, just snagged a huge honor—Alumni Chapter of the Year—at the Alpha Georgia District Association Convention in Augusta. Why? Their leadership, community impact, and dedication to the fraternity’s mission stood out among 25 chapters across Georgia. “This award is a testament to the passion and hard work of every member,” said Chapter President Harold G. Dickerson. One standout initiative? The Youth to Men mentoring program, where 70 Cobb high schoolers meet bi-monthly to learn life skills and give back to the community. “We’re shaping greatness,” said Steven Boyd, Callis Foundation Chair. For more, visit CobbAlphas.org. STORY 5: AirTag leads police to Chick-fil-A theft suspect  Richard George Cintron, 47, of Dallas, is facing charges after allegedly swiping three Rubbermaid utility trash carts and an Apple AirTag—worth $1,545 total—from the Chick-fil-A on Barrett Parkway in Kennesaw. According to police, Cintron was caught on surveillance cameras, along with his personal vehicles, during the thefts on Sept. 14 and 28. The AirTag? It led officers straight to his home, where Paulding County deputies found the stolen items near his truck. Cintron was arrested Nov. 19 and charged with theft by taking over $1,500. He spent less than 12 hours in jail, released on Nov. 20 after posting a $5,000 bond. Break: STORY 6: Strand Theatre's Andy Gaines wins Governor’s Award    Gov. Brian Kemp and first lady Marty Kemp announced Monday that Andy Gaines, executive director of the Strand Theatre, is one of this year’s recipients of the Governor’s Awards for the Arts and Humanities. The awards, presented with Georgia Council for the Arts and Georgia Humanities, honor 10 individuals or organizations making a real difference in Georgia’s cultural landscape. “Georgia’s arts and entertainment scene has fueled our economy for decades,” Kemp said. “These honorees have left a lasting mark on their communities and our state.” Under Gaines’ leadership, the Strand generated $5.4 million in economic impact last year, supported 80+ jobs, and contributed $230,000 in government revenue. Recipients will receive a handmade mahogany sculpture by Fairburn artist Etienné Jackson. STORY 7: Mount Paran Christian School collects over 10,000 diapers for Bartow Family Resources  Mount Paran Christian School’s high school BETA Club and National Honor Society recently rallied their community for a cause that hits close to home—helping local parents in need. Through their annual Fall Diaper Drive, students encouraged families to donate diapers and wipes for Bartow Family Resources, a nonprofit in Cartersville that supports parents and babies. Flyers went up, announcements were made, and the response? Incredible. Over 10,640 diapers and 1,180 wipes poured in, stacking up at the school’s doors. Student NHS officers counted, sorted, and loaded the donations, ready for Bartow Family Resources to distribute essentials like diapers, formula, and clothing to families who need them most. We’ll have closing comments after this. Break: INGLES 3 Signoff-   Thanks again for hanging out with us on today’s Marietta Daily Journal Podcast. At the 2025 ACEC Fall Conference, we sit down with ACEC Scholarship recipient Evan Lopez, whose journey from Rutgers University to Clemson University reflects both determination and a deepening passion for solving real-world engineering challenges. In this episode, Evan opens up about how he discovered industrial engineering, why the discipline's blend of systems thinking and practical problem-solving resonated with him, and the professors, mentors, and academic programs that pushed him to grow beyond the classroom. Evan also shares his emerging career focus on geothermal energy—a field he believes will play a transformative role in the nation's clean-energy transition. He talks about the increasing need for engineers who can integrate technical expertise with sustainability goals, and why hands-on experience in labs, co-ops, and fieldwork is essential for the next generation of engineering professionals. We discuss how the ACEC scholarship is not just financial support but a catalyst for Evan's long-term ambitions: securing competitive internships, pursuing his master's degree, and ultimately earning his Professional Engineer license. His story highlights how early investment in young engineers fuels innovation, broadens the talent pipeline, and strengthens the future of the industry. Tune in for a conversation about mentorship, emerging energy technologies, and the opportunities that shape tomorrow's engineering leaders.

This is the richest, strongest, and most respected the USA has ever been. November 5th, and Tariffs, are the reasons why. Thank you for your attention to this matter! President DJT How Andrew Jackson Freed America From Central Bank Control… And Why It Matters Now It's hard to believe the United States government was ever debt-free. But it happened once—in 1835—thanks to President Andrew Jackson. He was the first and only president   When he became president, Jackson was determined to rid the US of its national debt. After all, debt enslaves you to your creditors. Jackson knew that being debt-free was essential to independence. This outlook resonated with many Americans back then. With that in mind, Jackson attacked the institutions and powerful people who promoted and enabled the federal debt. This included the banking elites and the Second Bank of the United States, the country's central bank at the time and precursor to today's insidious Federal Reserve system. Jackson couldn't squeeze the American people with a federal income tax to repay the debt. It didn't exist at the time and would have been unconstitutional. He also couldn't simply print currency to pay off the debt. Perpetuating such an insane fraud—which the Fed does on a massive scale today—likely never entered his mind. Instead, Jackson had to rely on tax revenue from other sources, mainly import tariffs and excise taxes, to pay down the debt. He also drastically cut federal spending and frequently vetoed spending bills. Jackson's determination worked. By January 1835, the US was debt-free for the first time. Unfortunately, it didn't last much more than a year. After that, the US would never again be debt-free—not even close. Revenge of the Central Bankers After Jackson succeeded in ending the Second Bank of the United States, anything associated with a central bank became deeply unpopular with the American public. So, central bank advocates tried a new branding strategy.     Source: zerohedge.com Political/Rights https://twitter.com/DHSgov/status/1991603017242603943?s=20  spouse -Domestic battery by strangulation -Coerce with threat of force -Driving on suspended license -Multiple DUIs -Possession of a controlled substance. Regarding Marco Rubio’s involvement as Secretary of State, initial reports indicated he distanced himself from the plan during a phone call with a bipartisan group of U.S. senators (including Mike Rounds and Angus King), describing it as a “Russian wish list” rather than an official U.S. position, and clarifying it was merely a document passed along from Moscow.  However, Rubio and the State Department later publicly reversed this stance, insisting the plan was “authored” by the U.S. with input from both Russian and Ukrainian sides, denying claims of purely Russian origins and calling such assertions “blatantly false.”  This flip-flop has fueled criticism of incompetence and internal disarray in the administration, with European allies like Poland questioning the plan’s true authorship, and figures like Boris Johnson labeling it a “betrayal” and “military castration” of Ukraine.  Recent updates suggest the draft has been revised to better reflect Ukraine’s priorities, per NSDC Secretary Rustem Umerov, potentially in response to backlash https://twitter.com/marcorubio/status/1992413078160617849?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1992413078160617849%7Ctwgr%5E0f66861c566f50b41a9af07d57fe1e73a72fec8b%7Ctwcon%5Es1_c10&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fredstate.com%2Fwardclark%2F2025%2F11%2F23%2Fa-new-wrinkle-secstate-distances-us-from-unacceptable-ukraine-proposal-n2196487 https://twitter.com/WarClandestine/status/1991899588241076591?s=20 https://twitter.com/kadmitriev/status/1991935021259919768?s=20 https://twitter.com/InsiderGeo/status/1991818640467874060?s=20  why also they are pushing maximalist demands. From their perspective, it's simple: if Ukraine accepts, they achieve their goals immediately. Marjorie   https://twitter.com/DavidMarkDC/status/1992045897526456357?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1992045897526456357%7Ctwgr%5E83f270a88adb7ed9bdd1802c693cdb86d882337c%7Ctwcon%5Es1_c10&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.thegatewaypundit.com%2F2025%2F11%2Fintriguing-detail-emerges-that-likely-explains-exact-date%2F Source: thegatewaypundit.com Current House Composition (as of November 2025) Republicans: 219 seats Democrats: 213 seats Vacancies: 3 (one Republican-held seat in Tennessee’s 7th district, and two Democratic-held seats in Texas’s 18th and New Jersey’s 11th districts) Total members: 435 (432 occupied) This gives Republicans a slim majority, allowing them to pass party-line bills with a bit of breathing room for absences or defections (needing roughly 217 votes in a full House for a simple majority). Impact of Greene’s Resignation Numerical Effect: Starting January 5, 2026, her safe Republican seat in Georgia’s 14th district will become vacant, dropping Republicans to 218 occupied seats against Democrats’ 213 (assuming no other changes, with vacancies rising to 4). This shrinks their effective margin to just 5 votes, leaving almost no room for internal dissent, illnesses, or travel delays—issues that have plagued the GOP in recent years with narrow majorities.  Passing legislation could become trickier on contentious bills, as even one or two holdouts might sink votes without Democratic support. Temporary Nature: Georgia law requires a special election for House vacancies, typically scheduled within 2-3 months by the governor. Given the district’s strong Republican lean (she won reelection in 2024 by over 30 points), it’s highly likely to be filled by another Republican, restoring the majority relatively quickly.  In summary, while the resignation tightens an already precarious majority and could complicate near-term votes in early 2026, it’s not a game-changer long-term. Republicans have navigated similar slim margins before, often relying on procedural tools or bipartisan deals when needed. https://twitter.com/ElectionWiz/status/1992360234913050627?s=20 https://twitter.com/mtgreenee/status/1992586669204070761?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1992586669204070761%7Ctwgr%5E63a82205206ed50771f6d6684add6a3453443c47%7Ctwcon%5Es1_c10&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.thegatewaypundit.com%2F2025%2F11%2Fmarjorie-taylor-greene-responds-report-that-she-is%2F   ending barrage of phone calls, Marjorie went BAD. Around 42 million people in the United States get SNAP benefits each month to cover basic needs like eggs, bread, and infant formula. Because of the government shutdown, most of those benefits have lapsed, and despite a judge's ruling that the Trump administration release contingency funds to cover the program, the White House will now only offer partial funding. On this episode, we're revisiting our 2019 reporting on how one woman became the symbol for anti-welfare politicians to turn the public against government programs for the poor.Learn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

Food stamp recipients will receive up to 65 percent of their normal benefits in November, according to court filings by Trump administration officials on Nov. 5. That's an increase on the 50 percent outlined in previous filings and in a U.S. Department of Agriculture memorandum sent to states on Tuesday. As President Donald Trump toured Asia in late October, an Epoch Times reporter traveling with the White House entourage met with repeated roadblocks in accessing key press events, which fit an ongoing pattern of interference by communist authorities in Beijing. Along with its sister media outlet NTD, The Epoch Times was ultimately denied access to two key press events in which world leaders gathered in late October—the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summits. Both summits revealed the regional power of China's communist regime, which signed trade pacts and pressed for stronger trade ties with nations already heavily tethered to China economically.

What's a Donor-Advised Fund? (And Should You Use One?)

MoneyWise on Oneplace.com

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 31, 2025 24:57

If you've ever wished your giving could be both simpler and more strategic, there's a powerful tool worth knowing about: the donor-advised fund, or DAF for short.Generosity isn't just about how much you give—it's about the heart behind it. As Paul reminds us in 2 Corinthians 9:7, “Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”Wise stewardship allows us to align our giving with God's purposes, using tools that help us maximize our Kingdom impact. A donor-advised fund—when used rightly—can help you do both: give joyfully and steward resources efficiently. What Is a Donor-Advised Fund?Think of a DAF as a charitable checking account designed to support the causes you care about. You contribute cash, stock, or other assets, receive an immediate tax deduction, and then recommend grants to ministries or charities on your timetable. In other words, it separates the act of giving from the act of distributing. You might contribute during a high-income year or before selling an asset to take advantage of tax benefits, while taking time to decide where those dollars should go prayerfully.Behind the scenes, your DAF is managed by a sponsoring organization. At FaithFi, we recommend the National Christian Foundation (NCF)—one of the largest and most trusted Christian providers, founded by Larry Burkett and Ron Blue. NCF handles the record-keeping, issues the grants, and provides online tools to manage your giving.Suppose you plan to sell a business or a piece of real estate that would normally result in a significant capital gain. By donating it to your donor-advised fund before the sale, you can avoid paying capital gains tax, allowing more of the donation to go directly to Kingdom purposes. You receive an immediate tax deduction for the full value of your gift since it's considered an irrevocable charitable contribution. The funds can be invested for potential growth while you prayerfully decide which ministries to support—or you can give immediately. When you're ready, you simply recommend a grant, such as $10,000, to your church or a mission organization. The DAF sponsor verifies the charity and then sends the gift—either in your name or anonymously. The Benefits of a Donor-Advised FundDonor-advised funds have become the fastest-growing vehicle for charitable giving in America, and for good reason. They combine flexibility, simplicity, and intentionality—all with a focus on Kingdom impact. Here are some of the key advantages:Simplicity – One contribution can fund all your charitable giving, with a single tax receipt and one dashboard to track every grant.Tax Efficiency – Receive your deduction when you contribute, not when you give. Donating appreciated assets can help avoid capital gains taxes, increasing the amount that goes to ministry.Flexibility – Give now and decide later where the funds should go, allowing generosity even as you discern where God is leading.Legacy Planning – Name successors—such as children or grandchildren—to carry on your legacy of generosity.Focus on Mission – Since the administration is handled for you, you can focus your energy on prayerfully deciding where to give.Important Limitations to ConsiderNo giving tool is perfect. Here are a few things to keep in mind:Irrevocability – Once you contribute to a DAF, it's a completed gift—you can't take the funds back.Qualified Recipients – Grants can only be made to IRS-approved charities, not individuals or political causes.Timing of Impact – Funds can remain in the account for years, which may delay charitable impact. At FaithFi, we encourage believers to use DAFs for timely generosity rather than indefinite storage. A DAF is meant to organize your giving, not to hold back what God has already called you to release. Why FaithFi Recommends NCFThere are many donor-advised fund providers—but not all share your faith commitments. That's why we recommend the National Christian Foundation (NCF).NCF doesn't just process gifts; they walk with donors in prayer and biblical wisdom. Their Giving Funds simplify generosity, reduce tax burdens, and amplify Kingdom impact. They can even accept complex, non-cash gifts, such as real estate, business interests, or agricultural assets.More importantly, NCF's team seeks to help every believer become a joyful, generous steward who advances the Gospel through wise giving. To learn more or to open your own Giving Fund, visit FaithFi.com/NCF. You can set up your fund in just minutes. And if you'd like a trusted financial advisor to guide you in the process, visit FindaCKA.com.At the end of the day, a donor-advised fund is just a tool—but in the hands of a faithful steward, it becomes a powerful way to partner with God in His work. When our giving flows from gratitude and trust, every dollar becomes a declaration: God owns it all, and we are His stewards. That's what it means to give with joy, wisdom, and eternal purpose. On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:My husband was recently diagnosed with a serious health condition, and we're trying to decide whether it's wise to downsize our home. We currently owe about $198,000, but we're also looking at another house for $137,500. With today's interest rates, we could do a 15-, 20-, or 30-year loan. If my husband's income were to go away, would it be smarter to stay where we are or move to the smaller home with a lower payment?I'm 61 and wondering whether I should withdraw money from my 401(k) to pay off my car loan instead of taking out a new one. I've been looking at my budget and income, and I'm not sure if that's the best move. What do you think? My husband recently passed away. He had an IRA worth a little under $70,000, and I have one too. My financial advisor suggested that I roll his IRA into mine—can I do that, and would that be the best approach? Also, our home is in an irrevocable living trust. Am I allowed to sell it, or does it have to stay in the trust? Our term life insurance policy is set to expire soon. We could cash it out or roll it into a whole life policy, but we already have enough life insurance. With a child heading to college in about a year and a half, we're wondering if there's a smart way to put that money into savings for college without taking a big tax hit.Resources Mentioned:Faithful Steward: FaithFi's New Quarterly Magazine (Become a FaithFi Partner)National Christian Foundation (NCF)Wisdom Over Wealth: 12 Lessons from Ecclesiastes on MoneyLook At The Sparrows: A 21-Day Devotional on Financial Fear and AnxietyRich Toward God: A Study on the Parable of the Rich FoolFind a Certified Kingdom Advisor (CKA) or Certified Christian Financial Counselor (CertCFC)FaithFi App Remember, you can call in to ask your questions every workday at (800) 525-7000.
