Welcome back all to the BALLS AND BEARDS PODCAST! In today's Season 5 Episode 9, the boys have you covered with a FULL RECAP from what was a very busy start to NFL Free Agency. The Commanders loaded up around young star QB Jayden Daniels, the Bears beefed up & retooled their O-line; plus trades, big signings, and will Aaron Rodgers finally make a decision? Plus the Cowboys & 49ers stand pat, the Eagles lose some key players from their Super Bowl Title-winning defense, and the Seahawks were incredibly active, trading both star WR DK Metcalf & QB Geno Smith, while bringing Sam Darnold. What does it all mean? Who were the big NFL Free Agency winners & losers? The boys have you covered with a full breakdown & recap of all of the exciting off-season activity. Then it's onto the NBA where we are inching closer toward the playoffs. The West has become a jumbled, heated juggernaut as OKC continues to distance themselves from the pack, but the Nuggets, Lakers, surging Rockets, and Grizzlies all find themselves just two games apart while jostling for position between the 2-5 spots. In the East, it's same old same old as the top 6 are pretty well set in stone by this point, and we are trending toward having a pair of historically bad teams make the play-in. Lastly, it wouldn't be an episode without the Golden Beard of the Week Award! Last week Mikee got back in the win column, and then we had a first for this week as both Mikee & Justin had the same nominee! Will their joint-nominee take home the Award or will it be Chris's turn? All of that plus much, much more - including a fun 'March Madness' story from yesteryear as the NCAA Tournament is in full-swing. The Washington Commanders had an amazing first season with Head Coach Dan Quinn and rookie QB Jayden Daniels. But they did so with the lowest amount of starters that came from the first two rounds of the draft. How do these draft misses impact what Adam Peters needs to do?
With Craig Hoffman out, Lynnell Willingham steps in to discuss the challenge ahead for Adam Peters and the Commanders' front office. After a wildly successful offseason last year—nailing the draft with franchise QB Jayden Daniels, culture-setter Mikey Sainristil, and key contributors like Brandon Coleman and Javonte Jean-Baptiste—can they replicate that magic? Lynnell also highlights the impact of free-agent signings like Frankie Luvu, Tyler Biadasz, and Jeremy Chinn, along with veteran additions Bobby Wagner, Zach Ertz, and Noah Brown. Will the Commanders' front office be able to build on that success this offseason?

On deck: (6:27) I have to start off by railing against the NFL Wild Card Weekend being underwhelming and rather lame honestly. It was salvaged in the nightcap down in Tampa as rookie QB Jayden Daniels led the Commanders to their franchise's first playoff victory in 19 years, beating the Buccaneers 23-20. Did this cement the organization's odor of the regime of Daniel Snyder years ago? I'll go through the rest of the schedule where the Texans, Eagles, Ravens and Bills coasted to victory. I'll get on both Justin Herbert and Jordan Love as far as their performances this weekend. No surprise as Mike Vrabel is your new coach of the New England Patriots. The nightmare continues in Cleveland as Deshaun Watson re-injures his Achilles and is likely done for 2025. Will they pivot and draft a QB, knowing that they still have to fork over $94 million to Watson? (42:10) The National Championship is set for college football as Penn State and Texas will have long winters, springs and into summer after suffering brutal defeats at the hands of Notre Dame and Ohio State, respectively. I'll dissect both games, see what went wrong for the Nittany Lions and Longhorns and briefly look ahead to the title game next Monday night. There was some sad news as former Colorado Buffalo coach, Bill McCartney died at the age of 84. (52:48) Not much is happening in the Association as I'll touch on the Cavaliers getting their 12 game winning streak snapped. Zion Williamson's tardiness leads to a suspension. Will he ever grow up? And a historic achievement by Nikola Jokic and Russell Westbrook, recording triple doubles in the same game for the second time this year. I will check to see what else is going on as teams are approaching the midway point of the season. (59:59) Same for the NHL as I'll keep an eye on Alex Ovechkin's pursuit on Wayne Gretzky's record, the Bruins snap a six game skid in unconventional fashion and keep you abreast of what's happening on the ice over the past few days. (1:04:55) Baseball is about a month away from pitchers and catchers reporting to spring training. What's the latest regarding the Mets signing Pete Alonso and reports of a contract in place? (1:09:00) We already have an upset of a top men's player down under at the Australian Open as #11 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas has been ousted by 20 year old Alex Michelsen. Besides that, Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, Coco Gauff and Iga Swiatek has advanced as they're just getting started in the first Grand Slam of 2025. NBC DESTROYED for removing REDSKINS name from graphic as QB Jayden Daniels sets FRANCHISE RECORD!
The Washington Commanders beat the Atlanta Falcons 30-24 at home in an EPIC overtime game to move to 11-5 on the season and have officially clinched a spot in the playoffs. The 11-5 start to the season is the best since the 1991 season where they won the Superbowl. This game was all about the superstar rookie QB Jayden Daniels, who went 24/36 for 227 yards and 3 TDs, including the game-winner to Zach Ertz in overtime, and 1 INT. He also added 127 yards on the ground on 16 carries. Olamide Zaccheaus caught 8 balls for 85 yards and 1 TD, whil Terry McLaurin only had 1 catch for 5 yards in this game. The defense did not have a good game against Bijan Robinson, giving up over 90 yards on the ground to him, along with 2 TDs on 17 carries. Michael Penix made his road and primetime debut and looked shaky at times, but dialed in when the moments were brightest, converting 2 4th downs on their penultimate drive, including a 4th and goal to Kyle Pitts for a game-tying TD, and marching the Falcons down the field for a potential game-winning 56 yard field goal that Riley Patterson hit short. November 8, 2024 - Season 15, Episode 49 of The Terrible Podcast is now in the can. In this Friday morning episode, Alex Kozora and I get right to talking about the Pittsburgh Steelers as they continue to prepare for their Week 10 Sunday afternoon road game against the Washington Commanders. We go over the Steelers' Thursday injury report and how important Friday will be for a few players, including rookie OLB Nick Herbig and TE MyCole Pruitt. We go over possible elevations from the team's practice squad on Saturday and possible other weekend transactions forthcoming. On Thursday, we once again heard from two of the Steelers' coordinators, Arthur Smith and Teryl Austin. As usual, Alex and I recap the few main talking points to come out of those media sessions. We continue to go over the additions of new WR Mike Williams and OLB Preston Smith based on things the coordinators said. Alex and I welcome Ben Standig of The Athletic to the show, and he helps us get started with a preview of the Steelers' road game against the Commanders. Standig has covered the Commanders for some time and that means he has a great pulse on the team. We go over the Commanders' addition of CB Marshon Lattimore and the play of rookie QB Jayden Daniels so far this season. We also discuss with Ben what new OC Kliff Kingsbury brings to Washington. We go over Commanders' injury situation heading into Friday afternoon and what the home team's plan of attack on both sides of the football should be. At the end of our talk with Ben, he gives us his score prediction for the Steelers-Commanders game. If not already doing so, make sure to follow Ben on X/Twitter at @BenStandig and make sure to read his work online here: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/author/ben-standig/ After finishing with Ben, Alex and I provide our own preview of the Steelers-Commanders game. We break down what we are looking for out of both teams on both sides of the football. Alex and I then give our picks against the spread for all of the Week 10 NFL games. We also give our score predictions for Steelers-Commanders to end that segment. This 114-minute episode also discusses several other minor topics not noted and we also answer a few email questions we received from listeners since Tuesday. steelersdepot.com Learn more about your ad choices. 11/4/24 - Hour 2 NFL Insider Tom Pelissero tells Rich why the New Orleans Saints fired head coach Dennis Allen, which other teams have coaches with heating up hot seats, how Bill Belichick could impact the next cycle of head coaching hires, and which players could be on the move before the NFL Trade Deadline arrives. Rich makes the case for Kyler Murray's place in the NFL MVP conversation, weighs in on the Chicago Bears' hangover from their Week 8 hail Mary loss that resulted in a lackluster showing in Week 9 vs the Cardinals, and continues to marvel at the poise and leadership of rookie QB Jayden Daniels who's led the Commanders to a surprising 7-2 record.
