COBB LIFE for January 28th Publish Date:  January 25th INTRODUCTION   From the Drake Realty Studio, welcome to 'Cobb Life,' proudly sponsored by the Marietta Daily Journal. I'm your host, Keith Ippolito, representing the BG Ad Group. A special thanks to our show's sponsor, Credit Union of Georgia, for their unwavering support.   Today's episode is a twofer. Firstly, I had the chance to chat with Robby Heisner, the influential producer and writer for the band, Atomic Freak. Following that, I had a fascinating chat with Joshua Trower, the Education Program Coordinator at The Southern Museum of Civil and Locomotive History.   Robby's life story is a compelling mix of diverse talents, challenges, and an unwavering spirit of resilience and creativity.   Beginning his career as a magician, Robby mesmerized audiences with his illusions and levitations. He then transitioned into the music scene with his band, The KOPPS, known for their unique police-themed approach.   Despite dealing with muscular dystrophy, Robby formed the Van Gogh band, undertaking an extraordinary journey that saw him perform at events around the country and collaborate on projects for the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation.   After stepping away from music for some time, Robby is back with his new band, Atomic Freak. Their debut album, "NUCLEAR MELTDOWN," is a fiery blend of heavy guitar-based rock 'n' roll that pays tribute to the golden era of hard rock, fortified with a fresh, enigmatic energy. The mysterious origins of Atomic Freak have intrigued fans and critics alike, sparking curiosity and speculation.   Following my dialogue with Robby, Joshua will join me to discuss one of the largest model railroading events in the southeast. With over 20 different model railroads from three states, Joshua also gives us a sneak peek into the museum's history and the renowned Great Locomotive Chase.   So, let's settle in, take a moment to unwind—it's Sunday after all—and journey with us as we explore the heart and soul of 'Cobb Life.' Georgia Senate Committee Passes Antisemitism Bill

From the Ingles Studio this is your news minute on the Cherokee Tribune Ledger Podcast presented by The BG AD Group. Today is Wednesday, January 24th, and I'm Keith Ippolito. Georgia Senate Committee Passes Antisemitism Bill In a significant development, the Georgia state Senate committee has approved a revised version of legislation that defines antisemitism and includes it in the state's hate crimes law. This approval comes after an emotionally charged hearing featuring arguments both for and against the measure. House Bill 30, which passed the Georgia House of Representatives last year but did not pass in the Senate, aims to incorporate the definition of antisemitism used by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance into state law. The bill also provides additional penalties for crimes committed against Jewish victims. The previous version of the bill was criticized for its ambiguity, leading to Senate President Pro Tempore John Kennedy, R-Macon, to champion this new, clearer version. “This substitute clearly sets out the government's duties,” he said. “Agencies can rely on the definition to determine if antisemitism is present.” Rep. John Carson, R-northeast Cobb, the House bill's chief sponsor, underscored the urgent need for this legislation due to a significant increase in antisemitic incidents in Georgia. The hearing prior to the vote saw speakers both supporting and opposing the bill, with Jewish Georgians on both sides. Critics expressed concerns that the legislation could be used to silence critics of Israel's actions in the Gaza Strip. However, supporters argued that the bill is necessary to address the increasing antisemitic violence in Georgia. House Bill 30 will now proceed to the Senate Rules Committee, where it will be scheduled for a full Senate vote. For more news about our community, visit tribuneledgernews.com. From the Ingles Studio this is your news minute on the Cherokee Tribune Ledger Podcast presented by The BG AD Group. Today is Monday, January 22nd , and I'm Keith Ippolito. Stamp Shock: Navigating the Sixth Price Hike Since 2019 The United States Postal Service (USPS) has announced yet another increase in the price of first-class "forever" stamps, marking the sixth rise since 2019. Starting from Sunday, the cost of these stamps will surge from 66 to 68 cents. This follows two increases in 2023, when the price of forever stamps rose from 60 to 63 cents in January, and then again to 66 cents in July. Additionally, the prices for domestic postcard stamps will increase from 51 to 53 cents and international postcards will go from $1.50 to $1.55. The USPS justified this increase by pointing to rising operating expenses due to inflation and the impacts of a previously flawed pricing model. They emphasized that changes to mail service costs are necessary to provide the Postal Service with much-needed revenue. Despite these increases, The USPS maintains that its prices remain among the most affordable globally. When adjusted for inflation, the price of postage in January 2019, which was 50 cents, equates to about 61 cents in spring 2023, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics' CPI inflation calculator. State Economist Robert Buschman predicts a mild recession in the first half of the year, impacting tax collections. Kemp believes proposed pay increases for state employees and teachers will act as a buffer against the recession, aiming to keep people working and the state in good shape. Sky High Concerns: Georgia Airports Battling Soaring Numbers of Intercepted Loaded Firearms In 2023, there has been a notable surge in the interception of firearms at Georgia's federally regulated airports, particularly at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) revealed that a staggering 93% of the firearms intercepted at airports nationwide were found to be loaded. This increase in intercepted firearms correlates with a rise in the overall number of passengers. The TSA highlighted that in Georgia, the rate of firearms detection exceeded twice the national average. To provide a specific insight, one firearm was discovered for every 61,646 passengers screened in the state. This concerning trend underscores the need for heightened awareness and security measures at Georgia's airports. For more news about our community, visit tribuneledgernews.com. Kemp Endorses School Vouchers Push Georgia Governor Brian Kemp urged lawmakers to pass a private school vouchers bill during his annual State of the State address, emphasizing the need for an "all-of-the-above approach" to education, including public, private, homeschooling, and charter options. The Senate had passed similar legislation last year, offering $6,000 scholarships for students in low-performing schools, but it failed in the House due to bipartisan opposition. Kemp, focusing on a $2 billion spending plan, also proposed state income tax cuts, pay raises for employees and teachers, school safety enhancements, and increased mental health spending. Democrats criticized Kemp for not supporting Medicaid expansion and accused him of defunding public schools. For more news about our community, visit tribuneledgernews.com. American Airlines makes surprising change affecting passengers American Airlines has announced surprising changes that will impact passengers in 2024. The airline is set to revamp its AAdvantage loyalty program, offering more benefits to its members and enhancing the overall travel experience. The new developments, set to begin on March 1, 2024, come as a response to a competitive scramble among airlines to attract loyal customers following a controversial decision by Delta Air Lines to scale back passenger access to its SkyMiles airport lounges in late 2023. American Airlines is also introducing new ways for travelers to use AAdvantage miles. Once members reach AAdvantage Platinum Pro status, they can redeem miles for Flagship First Dining passes and upgrades with select airline partners. Later in 2024, the airline will offer more exclusive benefits such as free same-day standby for earlier domestic flights, extended trip credit, Admirals Club One-Day Passes, Flagship Lounge Single Visit Passes, and the ability to put flights on hold free of charge for up to 24 hours. Furthermore, American Airlines will be changing its cancellation policy. Starting later this month, AAdvantage members will have the ability to cancel non-refundable Basic Economy tickets and receive a partial trip credit for a fee. Cherokee County Wants to Hear from You on Possible New Sales Tax The Cherokee County Board of Commissioners is actively seeking public feedback concerning the potential implementation of a new sales tax. The proposed tax could be used to offset property taxes or fund transportation projects. Three types of sales taxes are being considered: a Local Option Sales Tax, Homestead Option Sales Tax, or a Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax. The board has planned six town hall meetings throughout this month to gather public opinions on the matter. The first town hall meeting will occur from 7-8 p.m. on January 8 in Cherokee Hall at the Cherokee County Administration Building. Additional town halls are scheduled for January 10, 15, 17, 22, and 23, at various locations across the county. During these town hall meetings, officials will present the three tax options, explaining how each one operates, and then listen to residents' opinions on how to move forward. Currently, Cherokee County is one of only three counties in Georgia, alongside Cobb and Gwinnett, that does not have an additional sales tax to help alleviate property tax and general fund expenditures. Metro Atlanta posts strong job growth in November In a notable development, the jobless rate in metro Atlanta dipped to 4.2% in November, compared to 4.3% the previous month. The data, provided by the State Department of Labor, indicates a solid job market, especially in the retail and hospitality sectors, reflecting a boost in shopping, dining, and entertainment activities. This year, Atlanta's economic resilience has been conspicuous, attracting talent from across the state and contributing to the majority of new jobs in Georgia. The growth in the job market exceeded expectations, contradicting earlier predictions of an economic downturn. However, certain companies, including FAB Precision Sheetmetal and Truist Bank, have announced layoffs and branch closures, underscoring challenges within specific sectors. Despite these variations, Atlanta's job base grew by 2.47% over the past year, outpacing both the state and national growth rates. Georgia State Senators Targeted by Swatting Calls In a concerning series of events, multiple Georgia officials were targeted by swatting calls over the holiday season. State Senators Kay Kirkpatrick and John Albers, who represent parts of Cherokee County, were among those affected. Swatting is a form of criminal harassment, where a false emergency is reported at someone's home. In both cases, law enforcement responded swiftly to the alleged threats, only to find the calls were hoaxes. The incident has raised serious concerns about the misuse of emergency services and public safety. Both Kirkpatrick and Albers expressed their frustration at the misuse of law enforcement resources, with Albers warning that those responsible would be held accountable. This follows similar incidents targeting other state officials, including Senator Clint Dixon and U.S. Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene. Authorities urge the public to refrain from such dangerous activities and are working diligently to trace these calls. For more news about our community, visit tribuneledgernews.com. Today is Wednesday, December 27th, and I'm Keith Ippolito. 2023's 118th Congress Records Historic Low in Productivity Amidst Political Turmoil, Passing Only 22 Bills The 118th Congress, during the year 2023, has been marked as one of the least productive in modern history, passing a mere 22 pieces of legislation. The House and Senate saw a total of 724 and 352 bills voted on respectively, but only a fraction of them were successfully enacted, with a success rate of 0.001%. The year was riddled with political turbulence, including a delayed election for the House Speaker, disagreements over a debt ceiling bill, and the eventual ousting of Speaker Kevin McCarthy. The limited number of enacted bills primarily revolved around topics such as veterans' affairs, healthcare, defense, education, and public health. Despite the legislative gridlock, there appears to be a potential Senate discussion looming about additional support for Ukraine before the annual recess. From the Ingles Studio this is your news minute on the Cherokee Tribune Ledger Podcast presented by The BG AD GROUP. Today is Monday, December 25th, and I'm Keith Ippolito. Stay Safe and Festive: How to Prevent Christmas Tree Fires this Holiday Season As we gather around our Christmas trees on Christmas Day, it's important to remember real Christmas trees can pose a serious fire hazard. Unlike artificial ones, dry real trees are highly flammable and can go up in flames in seconds. The National Fire Protection Association has found that U.S. fire departments responded to an average of 160 home fires caused by Christmas trees each year from 2016 to 2020, leading to injuries and millions in property damage. While a well-watered tree is resistant to flames, a dehydrated one ignites easily and can be consumed by fire in mere seconds. So, remember to water your trees daily, keep them at least three feet away from heat sources, and make sure they don't block exits. And let's not forget - half of all home decoration fires in December are caused by candles. So, whether you're lighting up your tree or the rest of your home, exercise caution with decorations and lights. Stay safe, stay festive, and have a wonderful Christmas! Film Tax Credit a Net Loss to Georgia Georgia's film tax credit program is reportedly causing a financial loss for the state, according to a recent evaluation by the Department of Audits and Accounts. The study aligns with other state findings on film tax incentives. These results come as state lawmakers prepare recommendations on tax breaks as economic drivers. Despite wide support in certain sectors, skepticism remains, with $4.1 billion in unclaimed tax credits. Critics argue that the money could be better spent elsewhere, such as lowering income tax rates. The report also notes that for every $1 of net labor income supported by the film tax credit, $24.44 in credits are generated. For more news about our community, visit tribuneledgernews.com. Canton Man Sentenced to 20 Years of Prison for Child Sexual Abuse  A Canton man, Jonathan Ricky Millwood, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison following his guilty plea for aggravated sexual battery and child molestation. The case started when a girl under 10 years old revealed to her mother that Millwood had touched her inappropriately. After a series of forensic interviews and a Sexual Assault Nurse Exam, male DNA was confirmed on the child, leading to Millwood's conviction. The victim's mother expressed relief that her daughter would be spared from the further trauma of testifying in court. Millwood will serve his sentence without a chance for parole, followed by life on probation. He will also be required to register as a sex offender for life and is prohibited from contacting the victim or her family. As stated by District Attorney Susan Treadaway, while no sentence can heal the trauma endured by the child, it's hoped that this verdict will provide some closure and allow the start of the healing process. The chase ended when the suspect vehicle collided head-on with another vehicle, whose driver, thankfully, sustained non-life-threatening injuries. A Woodstock officer then used their patrol vehicle to box in the suspect vehicle, taking the suspect into custody. Design standards, including screen size limitations and equipment requirements, are outlined. The ordinance initially proposed mandatory EV charging station installations, but the council opted for a market-driven approach, encouraging extra parking for developers with installed charging stations.
