Indeed Desperation & Vibe-Coder Rise

The Chad & Cheese Podcast is back with another explosive episode, and this week, hosts Chad Sowash (when he's not beach-bound), Joel Cheesman, and Lieven dive headfirst into the escalating "cage match" between recruiting's two 800-pound gorillas: Indeed and LinkedIn. Is Indeed getting desperate? The trio dissects rumors of a bold (and highly suspicious) "spend-matching" pilot program—think a direct "Pepsi Challenge" aimed at poaching market share from LinkedIn. As Chad highlights, this incentive play comes loaded with major strings attached, raising questions about long-term sustainability and whether it's a genuine innovation or a frantic defensive move in a shrinking ad-spend pie. Meanwhile, LinkedIn isn't playing defense. They're rolling out AI-powered initial interview screening (now in early testing for Hiring Pro users), where an AI interviewer handles audio/video screens for up to 40 candidates per role. The system generates questions based on the job description, suggests ideal answers for recruiters to tweak, and scores responses on alignment—potentially streamlining the funnel but sparking debate on whether it truly improves quality or just adds more automation noise. The conversation gets spicy with "banana in the tailpipe" tactics (classic sabotage vibes), the real cost of Indeed's incentives, and whether LinkedIn's automated screens will actually fix the hiring funnel—or create new bottlenecks. They also touch on emerging trends like the rise of "vibe-coding" (AI-assisted low/no-code hacks) making ATS integrations faster and easier than ever, plus Travis Kalanick's big reveal: his long-stealth company Atoms launching fleets of specialized industrial robots for food, mining, transport, and beyond—wheeled "gainfully employed" bots, not sci-fi humanoids. If you're in HR, recruiting, or just love watching tech titans slug it out, this episode is pure chaos and insight. "Healthcare has had no star score, there's been no reliable pricing. It's all been just a black box." - Will BruhnAn estimated 21% of all medical care in the U.S. is completely unnecessary. My guest this week is Will Bruhn, CEO and Co-Founder of GAM (Global Appropriateness Measures), and he joins the show to explain exactly where that waste comes from and how we can fix it.Will argues that we've been measuring quality wrong. Instead of just looking at outcomes (did the surgery go well?), we need to measure appropriateness (should the surgery have happened at all?). We discuss the perverse financial incentives driving this waste, using real-world examples like unnecessary spinal fusions and the statistical spike in C-sections on Friday afternoons. But this episode isn't just about the problem; it's about the fix. Will breaks down how GAM uses data to identify high-value providers and how employers can redesign plans to guide members away from wasteful care, potentially saving millions while protecting patients from unnecessary risks.Tune in for a blueprint on eliminating the 21% of healthcare spending that shouldn't exist.Chapters:(00:00:00) 21% Of Medical Care Is Wasteful. Bahnsen compares Bitcoin to productive assets, explaining why The Bahnsen Group focuses on investments rooted in inherent productivity and usefulness. This week, Elon Musk—amidst his other duties of gutting United States federal government agencies as head of the “Department of Government Efficiency” (DOGE)—announced a hostile bid alongside a consortium of buyers to purchase control of OpenAI for $97.4 billion. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman vehemently replied that his company is not for sale. The artificial intelligence landscape is shifting rapidly. The week prior, American tech stocks plummeted in response to claims from Chinese company DeepSeek AI that its model had matched OpenAI's performance at a fraction of the cost. Days before that, President Donald Trump announced that OpenAI, Oracle, and Softbank would partner on an infrastructure project to power AI in the U.S. with an initial $100 billion investment. Altman himself is trying to pull off a much-touted plan to convert the nonprofit OpenAI into a for-profit entity, a development at the heart of his spat with Musk, who co-founded the startup.Bethany and Luigi discuss the implications of this changing landscape by reflecting on a prior Capitalisn't conversation with Luigi's former colleague Sendhil Mullainathan (now at MIT), who forecasted over a year ago that there would be no barriers to entry in AI. Does DeepSeek's success prove him right? How does the U.S. government's swift move to ban DeepSeek from government devices reflect how we should weigh national interests at the risk of hindering innovation and competition? Musk has the ear of Trump and a history of animosity with Altman over the direction of OpenAI. Does Musk's proposed hostile takeover signal that personal interests and relationships with American leadership will determine how AI develops in the U.S. from here on out? What does regulating AI in the collective interest look like, and can we escape a future where technology is consolidated in the hands of the wealthy few when billions of dollars in capital are required for its progress?Show Notes:On ProMarket, check out:Why Musk Is Right About OpenAI by Luigi Zingales, March 5, 2024Who Will Enforce AI's Social Purpose?
