Whoa,Matt is tall again and we are back for another episode. This time we put on our serious hats to talk about the devastating floods occurring in Yellowstone and the surrounding communities. Right now, thousands of people are displaced (some examples here and here) and fighting to rebuild their communities after Yellowstone's "1 in 500" year flood tore up the park we love so much. Park workers are struggling to find housing, business owners are trying to keep their doors open, and some people are watching their houses get swept away and posting it to Tik Tok.The evacuation has been grueling and we have seen some good signs in the past couple days but there is a lot left to be done. Gateway towns may be on their own for 2+ years while roads and bridges are repaired and areas are cleared. We order a pizza at the end of the episode from the Parlor at Mack's Inn. They are donating half of their revenue over the next few days to the Chamber of Commerce to assist these towns. Do what you can to help. We'll see you next week,PEEEA-ZZA

How far to make the pit down. What to use. What's slappin' rats?In this fast paced episode we are going to be chugging along the topic of train hopping.Once a popular means of getting around the country now only has a small number of participants due to the high risk and potential to get arrested. We may get off the rails a few times in this episode but in general we cover the history of train hopping, how people train hop and the dangers that are involved. The dangers are real in the sport of train hopping and we do not advise anyone to try it but if you really need to let off some steam we can't stop you from doing it.You can track us down on social media @parkratspodcast. We are trying to conduct some great content for you so we really appreciate the love. Here is the train hopping wiki if you are interested. Until the next stop,PEACCCESSEECECESSEEEEEE!!!!!!
Yeah ok we get it there is a famous band called The Byrds and we couldn't think of them but whatever we are a National Park podcast not a know every band podcast so give us a break ok.Anyways, We are talking bout thumbing today folks. Hitchhiking has been around for a very long time (1910!) and we are just sad it isnt still socially acceptable to do it still. As the automobile became more popular, so did people finding ways to get around the country. Sometimes the easiest way was to just stick out a thumb. We talk about the history of hitchhiking, its decline over the years, why it is perceived as dangerous, and some personal and third-party accounts of hitchhiking stories. We'll catch you down the road,THUMBBBBBB
Good afternoon Gentleman,Today we sit down by the fire with our stash of Cuban stogies and fine Scotch to have a civilized chat about a truly remarkable topic. Put on your best silk robe, pull your armchair close, and listen as we discuss everything there is to know about how to properly shit in the woods. Quoted as the Park's number one problem, pooping in the woods is something that has existed even before humans but now its turning our national parks into a collection of bad Taco Bell menu decisions. So heres what you gotta know about crappin in the woods, kid.Listen to the pod to learn more and If you want to help out the park, check out this cool foundation we found from typing "shit", "crap" and "poop" in our Google search bars. DoGoodShit is trying to make pooping in the woods so much more sustainable. Also, here's some bear shit lol.Alright, Peace!!!

We then talk about two beautiful parks down under. Australia is home to many National Parks with very unique wildlife. Uluṟu-Kata Tjuṯa National Park is an icon of Australia. The large rock serves as a tourist site but most importantly as a spiritually significant place for the aboriginal people. Its stunning height and rock art attracts large crowds who are no longer allowed to climb the rock and for good reason. The Grampians National Park Is also a stunning rock formation. Along this mountain range the granite mountains attract climbers from around the world to send some gnarly boulders and sport routes. If you are looking for a good time, ask the rock wallabies they know what's up. Until next time you smelly rats,PEEACCEEE!!!!!!!
You never know what a cougar is gonna do ;)In the first half of this episode we talk about some of the encroaching luxurious resorts surrounding popular national parks and some of the ways people are looking to experience national parks without leaving the comfort of the own homes and Netflix binges. If you really want to experience the true nature of national parks without glamping or without electricity, we compiled a few crazy hikes to isolated campsites for those inclined (literally and figuratively). In the second half of this episode we talk about the important steps you need to take to have a shot at surviving a deadly animal attack. While deaths from many of these animals are rare, it is good to know how to protect yourself if you ever come face to face with one of these animals. For more info on defending yourself from deadly animals check these links out:BearsBobcatPolar bearCougarKangarooKoalaAlrighty ratsHappy National Park Week

What's slappin Park Ratzzzz! You have definitely heard of these large clothing brands but did you know the climbers/naturalists behind them? Find out when we talk about the history of The North Face and Patagonia in this episode of the PRP.We talk about some huge names in climbing lore who created massive clothing and outdoor equipment brands from nothing. They took huge risks throughout the respected companies histories and always strived for a greener product (at least while the original creators where involved). Also a huge shout out to The South Butt it was a shame to see you get sued... we will surely be getting sued at some point so please DM us with some legal advice.Until next time you ratscals,PPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPeace :)
Hey yo,Don't listen to this episode... I'm not trying to pull a fast one to make you listen to it, this seriously was just me and josh exhausted talking about some cool activities and the latest park news. May not be our best. Here is some correlating facts to the episode:Catch and Release Fishing20 Ways to recreate in the national parksGo murder these thingsWhite Water Rafting and Shi-K goodnight, see you next week!zzzz
Hey guys so here's the deal. Right NOW, parks are hiring the next park rats for thousands of types of National Park Jobs. Today, we wanted to go in depth on how to get a job as a food service worker in the big three concession companies. A lot of sites will point you to a form on their site, but they almost always redirect to Aramark, Xanterra or Delaware North. So here is what you need to know to get a job and get in the national park that you want to visit. Remember, at the core of this experience the work comes second ;)At the top of this episode we talked a little bit about our OK trip which was ok... not amazing. But definitely pretty memorable. Sorry to the poor saps in rural Oklahoma. We start talking about how to get a park job at 16:52 There are of 25,000 jobs open for you to be the perfect fit. These include Culinary, Grill Cooks, Food Service Workers, Bar Back and Bartender, Hostesses/ Hosts, Guest Services, Barista, Cocktail Server, Busser, and even Dinner Theatre?!?Make sure you pick one that is hourly or seasonal and don't get trapped with a vague title or you'll be stuck washing dishes like our boi Kyle.To find a job that fits you, go here: Aramark, Xanterra.Do some research on the restaurant you really want to work in. Here is a good place to start. We compiled a few tips on how to survive in the craziness of the national park job hunt. Apply for multiple positions at the same locationHave a back up park in mindApply in the spring (now)Lie on your resumeAlways say you can work the entire summerPrepare to be working as early as MayIf you get to the parks early you have better opportunities for a better jobBe patient. There are a bunch of applications each year and they have to sort through them all. They may take a month to message you backDon't be afraid to ask for a better position or schedule when at the parkExpect to be busy at work (parks are more populated than ever)Request time off in advanceBe prepared for dorm style livingYou will most likely have one to two roommatesThey will probably give you a recommended packing list when you get hiredPlan on showing up early on your check in day so you can get settledDON'T SKIP ORIENTATION It is mandatory and you may have to wait a week to start working (or maybe that's what you want to do)Pack for cold weather no matter the parkIf you are under 21 be smart You are not working for NPS you are working for a large company (Which has its pros and cons) but if you are fired you can be kicked out of the park. As soon as you are not an employee you are a tourist and have to abide by the parks rulesGirls, be smart and be safe. Most park employees are great people and interesting characters but there are creeps. Companies have a strict sexual harassment policy but things will slide under the radar. Don't be afraid to call someone out. It is always smart to be in a groupAll this and more will soon be on a cheat sheet accessible to you all so stay tuned!Until next time....PEEACEEEE!!!!!
What is UP Park Rats!?!?!?!?!?As we research for these wonderful episodes we deliver to you, we can't always get to all of our information we found. In this episode, we bring you some of the juicy research that didn't make it in the episode. We first talk about an influencer who faked a hike in a park for instagram clout. Not a great move :(We then talk about a bear that had a particular interest in foot stank. This is one of the first accounts of this happening to stay safe out there.Lastly, we take a good bit of the episode to talk about some of the history and current conservation efforts regarding the bison. Bison are some great beasts that have a tough history of being over-hunted in America. We may do another episode of leftovers in the future but let us you know what you think in our instagram DMsPPPEEEAAACCCEEEEE Y'AALLLLLLLL!!!!!!!
Happi Week Guis,Bet you think we are talking about parks. Lol yeah obv. Today we wanted to touch on some of the dopest hikes in the continental United States. We talk a little bit about some long bois, like the American Discovery Trail and the Pacific Crest Trail. There are a few people that have hiked these 5000+ mile trails that we wanted to acknowledge and praise and kind of roast for their crunchy ass ways. There are some prime spots to take your dog and then some that your dog may not be vibing with. We like dogs!!! Matt talks about the Four Mile Trail in Yosemite and the history of this extremely fun and lowkey dangerous hike. From the Glacier Point Hotel, Firefall, and a bunch of kids riding jackasses, we cover the crazy history of this not exactly accurately named trail. Shoutout to Timberyard Brewing for their beers to keep us company, Wolftree is fantastic! And follow us on tiktok and insta at parkratspodcast.Ok i gotta goBye
Its getting spicy,This week we are talking about the SEXIEST national parks according to the weirdest website. Josh has fell down a rabbit hole in this episode that involves scam artists, dating site predators, and an insane collection of first person opinions of which park is the best for doing the dirty. We also talked about the least sexy parks which includes one park that may surprise you! And we read bad reviews, one of our favorite things to do on the podcast!Matt, also wraps up the Olympics with one of his stupid and unnecessary bits to put in perspective the most athletic national parks. What park runs the fastest? What's the longest jump in national parks? What park is the best curler? You're going to have to listen to find out.Enjoy the episode and if you do, follow us on instagram @parkratspodcast. We'll catch you next week!PEACE
What the HECK is happening you rats?!Today we talk about those small little towns that surround National Parks and some of their charms and farms. National Park satellite towns can be a great resource for shopping and lodging on your adventures. These places have can have their charm and often something out of the ordinary. The first park town we talk about is Whitefish Montana. If you have ever wanted to be in a hallmark movie and/or meet a secretly rich lumberjack who will show you the meaning of Christmas this is the place to be. Enjoy the local hootenanny and partake in the various outdoor activities they have in the town. We then talk about the wonderful town of Cody Wyoming. If you like wrangling cattle, large collections of firearms and outdoor activities you will probably have a great time in Cody. Cody is a huge place in the sport of rodeo and you can catch one there most summer nights. Cody also has the buffalo bill museum which is a great place to see some of the local history and also so so so so so so so so many guns. To fire off a few more towns we talk about Lee Vining which is just north of Williams Butt and that super cool and not funny at all. It's a classic mining town and a great slice of American history. Merced is another park town which was known as the gateway to Yosemite before other passages were created. We talk about some other small park towns and stuff but your going to have to listen to find out hehehehehehe.Anyways... enjoy the episode, drive safe, eat a hearty stew and just have a great day y'all.PEEEEE!!!PS. ace
Hey all you people,Dry Tortugas is bricked way the hell up. Be careful. You like turtles? Well good. Check out how turtles created one of the most heavily fortified Civil War fort and how one man was so worthless he spent a year in prison there. The battle of Antietam and Shiloh resulted in some extremely bloody days. They are both preserved to this day as National Historical Battlefields which you can visit to learn more about the history that comes with them as well as vibe with the nematoads that saved some soldiers lives. Folks, don't eat turtles, dont confuse IUDs with IEDs and make sure you wish your special someone happy valentines day, even if your a bean eating cousin lover.Love u bby,PEACCEE!!!
What's up park people!?The polar vortex got super drunk and nobody knows what that crazy thing is going to do next!In this episode we talk about some of the wild weather that has been going on in our National Parks. Many records have been broken this season and things are only going to get more insane as the years go on. We also discuss some freakish weather that occurs around the world and lets just say I am hoping we never have to see a vinegaroonado. 0:00 - 4:49So how about the weather huh? We talk about our weekend and some weather related topics and I don't know what Matt is talking about when he mentions marvel essentials or whatever he said. 4:50 - 9:45This is the muck talk section. Mud season in Yellowstone is a mess and we share a first hand example of how gross the spring can be. Be mindful when visiting Yellowstone around this time because you may get into some sticky hikes. Pro tip when hiking in muck or catching frogs always come prepared.9:45 - 13:29We discuss record breaking and all around wild weather in National Parks this past year/season. 13:29 - 24:37Acadia National Park saw some devastating flooding which washed out a very popular trail in the park. We discuss what actions the NPS are taking to prepare for upcoming natural disasters. Major weather events becoming more frequent because the polar vortex is super wasted right now from keg-standing CO2 at the industrial revolution rager so we are going to have to prep for what that crazy thing does. 24:37 - 38:34Some outlandish and rare weather events that we thought were interesting. From snow spikes to raining scorpions mother nature can throw some curveballs. We talk about hail rivers flowing in Mexico city, Ice Tsunamis, penitentes, moonbows and more.38:34 - 40:20Outro
Hi you bean eating cousin lovers,We are back with a new episode on our 1 year birthday! No we are not newborns and we weren't born yesterday, but this has been one year of the park rats podcast. We are recovering from a blizzy up in the northeast and we wanted to fill you in on how bad nantucket got rocked as well as the history of fedoras. In all reality we are talking about conservation today, mainly about the super steezy riprappers and rollies in the CCC. (Not CoCo Chanel).Josh fills us in on the history of the Civilian Conservation Corps, how FDR blessed cardboard eaters in the the 30s with a chance for BEANS, and how important conservation is to keeping our parks alive. More than 3 million civilians were shipped throughout the US to build roads, bridges, and most of all good times ;)We also talk about the grandmother of conservation in the US Mardy Murie who is one of the main reasons that more than 100 million acres in Alaska are free from loggers and other industries, known as the Arctic National Wildlife Range. We'll catch you guys next week.PEACEEE!?!!!
Yo what is good what is up park rats,This week we are vibing in the studio and rolling back to the roots of the podcast, learning about the people living in national parks. This week we talk about Parkitecture. No way you know what that is, don't even try to convince me >:(Jk its basically an architecture style built for the parks. We are joined by "Silent" Mike Murphy. Its funny cause his name is Mike but he didnt have a mic lololol. So check this out. 00:00 - 10:00 we talk a bit about what we were up to these past few days 10:00 - 25:00 we talk about Parkitecture, where it came from, the Lake Yellowstone Hotel and Old Faithful Inn, some Cars 3 Slander because obviously, and the history of employee housing and hospitality in the national parks. We want to thank you for tuning in this week and we will see you next time. Luv uOh also some cool Mormons built barns in national parks. Ok bye (PEACEEE!!!)
What's poppin park people?!We are back with another JUICY session for your enjoyment. In the top of the episode we talk about the documentary "The Alpinist" (SPOILER WARNING) and how wild of a film it is. We were jazzed on this doc and it lead us to research some other mountaineers and first ascents of large mountains. 1:10- 9:02We begin by dissecting "The Alpinist" and talking about how wild Marc-André Leclerc is in the film. It is absolutely jaw dropping to see what is possible in the realm of mixed climbing and free soloing. Marc-André is a certified climber chad and we had to geek out over him.9:02-14:43To put into perspective how fragile life is we talk about some incredibly unlucky and plain dumb deaths throughout history. People have died for some pretty ridiculous reasons and in this list we comment on some wild ones. Fair warning to all of you, stay away from swans.14:43-19:42In this segment we talk about some of the first ascents of some large mountains. The first attempts at mountaineering were not for sport but actually for religious reasons. The first mountaineers would use some of the same techniques people use today but with primitive gear. We also find out how hard it is to pronounce French correctly so France, we are sorry.19:42-30:24Matt tells some tails of some other mountaineers who had wild stories of being on some of the worlds tallest peaks. The first story is on K2 when an expedition gone wrong leads a group of men in a very intense situation. The second story is about a snowboarder who wanted to be the first to snowboard down Mt Everest. Stick around to the end to find out if he makes it!30:24-32:52Summary, outro and penis jokes.Check us out on Instagram or something idk it's your life.PEEEACCCCEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What is the purpose? Find out. (They want to bring VR into National Parks... what?)We talk about some federal crimes that you maybe committing by standing, hiking, camping and furiously tumbling in national parks and forests. What's up soup rats?!?!?!In this episode we talk about soup and potentially world ending volcanic activity. After the thanksgiving weekend we have been eating a lot of soup and it has gotten us thinking about some crazy National Park stories. If you are here for a part 2 from last episode stay tuned for the end where we wrap up some interesting information about Native American history in National Parks, That is at around 31:24 of the episode.0:00-6:30Souprats podcast here to talk about the various pros of eating a bowl of soup while driving. It's really fun and we here at the Park Rats Podcast think everyone should do it. 6:45Don't feed the critters in the parks! As we all should know the wild animals in national parks are wild and have survived for years without your leftover chicken nuggets and fries. We talk about a story where one tourist pays the price of trying to feed the wildlife in Yosemite National Park.10:54Honestly who really likes geese? They just drop their dookies all over the place and seriously it's annoying af. Geese are great at polluting lakes and having stupid long necks. No good for society and no good National Parks. Get rid of them. Please petition to remove all geese because they suck and I hate them.13:10Here are some National Park Guinness world records for you rats. National Parks as you know are very impressive places but here are some records that some parks hold that may surprise you. 22:22Some Matty math frFind out what happens when Matt cherry picks some stats to make caves seem really cool. This guy was on some serious soup when he came up with these stats28:18Yellowstone's hot soup has been causing some changes to the landscape around Old Faithful. Yellowstone is a hotbed for geothermal activity due its location on a world-ending super volcano. Recent geological activity has people interested what the future of the volcano will look like31:24Part 2 of the Native American activity of National Parks. In this chapter we talk about how Natives have been visiting Yellowstone for over 11,000 years. Many tribes claim land within Yellowstone's boarders and the land had many uses throughout its history.40:10OutroPS: Outro music is fire and Anderson Paak please feel free to reach out for a collab
Yo you glizzy gobblers,Sorry for the crazy intro. We were feeling hyped about the holidays. Hope your Thanksgiving was rad and you went over everything you are thankful for. What are we thankful for? My Ma's mashed potatoes, the New England Patriots drafting Mac Jones, and that Plymouth Rock isn't a full fledged national park. #itsjustarockbroWe know there is no correlation between Plymouth Rock and Christopher Columbus, we are just beefing with both. The Puritans were kinda beat too. However, as Massachusetts citizens we heard the Thanksgiving story growing up in history class and we just need to air it out.02:30Today we sit down and talk briefly about how Plymouth Rock sucks. If you don't believe us, read a little more here. Don't visit it, not worth it. Donate to your favorite charity instead and go to a free state park :)10:30But way more importantly, we talk about the side of thanksgiving that isn't discussed as often as it should be. The Native Americans being super chill and helping our POS tourist ancestors survive their first winter. We are thankful to be here in this great country so we wanted to talk about its first citizens and their rich history. We talk about the wampum, or America's first dollar.18:00 We talk about the Pequot War, where the English settlers shown their true colors.24:00And finally, we dive into the history of the Native Americans that lived in the parks. Specifically, we focused on Yosemite for this episode. We look a little more in depth at the territories bands including the Sierra Miwok , the Mono, and the Paiute. We also cover the Awahnechee people, who are widely known today in the history of Yosemite's history. If you want a little more, check out our History of Yosemite episode.Stay tuned for some more Native American history. We loved learning more about the histories of the initial park residents, Yellowstone is next. Enjoy the sus outro and we will see you soon you dirty rat.Peace!!!
What is up Ratzzz!!!We are desperately attempting to appeal to the youth by trying out a trend. Today we give each other two truths and a lie parks edition. We each took National park facts and snuck in some complete lies to throw the other off. This one ended up being a blast to record and spoiler alert, one of is way better than the other at this. Hope you guys enjoy this weeks installment and feel free to DM us your favorite fake park fact on our Instagram @parkratspodcastUntil next Tuesday,PEAACEEEEEE!!!!!
What's up Park Rats?!The ecology of National Parks and Forests face many threats from all sorts of outside interactions. In todays episode we talk about harmful invasive species in these places we know and love. The Florida everglades are known for a large number of invasive species. We talk about a few that are particularly terrifying. The Burmese python is a large snake that was introduced into the wild through the pet trade. These massive snakes snatch up anything from small creatures to alligators. Along with large snakes, wild boars are also a huge issue in Florida. These feral pigs have found homes all over the south east US after being introduced as livestock from early European settlers. We also talk about the Coqui frog which has taken over the forests of Hawaii. For its small size the frog can let out a loud croak which is an issue among locals. Gypsy Moths are another invasive species that are taking over the Midwest and northern US states. If you see one of these guys do us a favor and give it a good smash.Invasive species are a huge issue globally and recently Pablo Escobar's hippos have come into the news due to their new protection status. We talk about how one of his hippos would match up against the Kentucky coke bear so place your bets on Instagram! If you are interested in the wild world of National Parks follow us for more content! Check out our website or follow us on Instagram @parkratspodcastStay wild Park Rats!PEEEAAACCCEEEEEEE!!!11!!!!!!11!1
Whats up Rats?! Believe it or not we actually solve the mystery of why people get abducted by aliens in this one. We talk about the cases of alien abductions in and around national parks and speculate over if they are true or not. Some very famous alien abductions that have near National Parks and forests. This includes Travis Walton and Barney and Betty Hill who's stories were spread throughout the media resulting in support and skepticism from around the world. There are also many events and tourist destinations that park dwellers are likely to stumble upon. The UFO watchtower outside of Great Sand Dunes National Park offers cheap camping and a spot to look for flying saucers. There is also the Contact in the Desert event in Joshua Tree National Park if you are looking for more information on "ancient astronauts, extraterrestrial life, human origins, crop circles, anti-gravity machines, contact experiences" and more.If you are looking for a stop on your road trip to Death Valley and like UFOs, you can stop in Rachel Nevada. Rachel is considered to be the "UFO capital of the world" and is featured in magazines, books, television shows and many major newspapers as the center of UFO activity.Don't forget to direct hate mail to our facebook (or meta now I guess) and show us some love on instagram @parkratspodcast. For more information on the podcast you can check out our website and until next time guys....PEEEEAACCCCEEEEE!!!!!!!!!
Little late on the Halloween special but this episode is to special not to deliver to you all! We were spending our Halloween camping so we weren't around a computer :/In this episode, in the spirit of Halloween, we went to our cabin in the middle of the woods at night to talk about folklore. We cover all sorts of monsters and spooks all while out in the elements of the New England woods. Everything from the classic wendigos and skinwalkers to the giant owl witches of the Yakama and the diamond dragon of the Cherokee. To learn more, hit that play button mannnn. There are many tales of creatures lurking in the woods. We take some time to talk about a few we found interesting while we sat in the middle of the wood ourselves. (If you can't beat them, join them). To join our growing community of park rats, check out our instagram @parkratspodcast or our website at www.parkratspodcast.com. Fart-ober bbSpooky season continues with week three: Serial killers in national parks. We wanted to cover some of the most infamous national park serial killers. But now theyre rotting in jail.
What's poppin Park Rats!In this episode we cover mysterious disappearances in National Parks. The National Parks are a hot spot for stories of missing people, strange encounters and unexplainable events. We cover some interesting stories we found as well as roasting some ridiculous theories on why people go missing.5:09 First topic is a video called "Why I will NEVER VISIT Crater Lake Oregon" in which we talk about how ridiculous content can be when talking about unexplained stories. We don't want to knock this guy too much but some of the claims he is making are kind of insane. 11:05Terrance Woods disappeared in a strange way and we talk about what happened and create some theories that are most likely correct so just take our word for it. 18:03The strange disappearance of Alfred Beilhartz, a young boy in Rocky Mountain National Park got lost and was never found. There are many theories on where this child went but unfortunately the case has been cold ever since.26:57The Dennis Martin story and some "coverage" about the incident has us speculating around the fact that there is always someone who will claim the reason for any disappearance is because of a mystical creature or something the government is trying to hide from us. 35:45Go feral, it's free and easy and anyone can do it! As always if you are liking our content please check out our Instagram @ParkRatsPodcast and our website. Intro Music:Link
