Si conclude un altro viaggio bellissimo nella storia dell'alpinismo e dell'arrampicata che questa volta ci ha portato negli Stati Uniti, a conoscere il pensiero dei climbers americani dal dopoguerra ad oggi. Siamo partiti dal bellissimo documentario Valley Uprising per poi andare a conoscere i due amici/nemici della Golden Age dell'arrampicata di Yosemite: Royal Robbins e Warren Harding. Abbiamo poi visto il capitolo dedicato agli Stone Monkeys, che ha avuto in Jim Bridwell, detto the Bird, il suo capo carismatico e la sua controparte in Lynn Hill, la regina incontestata dell'arrampicata. Siamo giunti al capitolo conclusivo della parte leggendaria dell'arrampicata americana, quello degli Stone Monkeys che ha avuto nel divino Dean Potter il suo leader carismatico. La morte di Dean, nel 2015 segna un po' la fine di questa parte "leggendaria" dell'arrampicata a Yosemite. L'era attuale vede ancora 2 protagonisti (sono sempre 2!): uno è Tommy Caldwell, a cui ho dedicato uno dei miei primissimi podcast e l'altro è il suo amico, Alex Honnold che passa alla storia per il suo celebre free solo sulla free rider a El Capitan. Ho poi voluto andare a vedere cosa succedesse nell'alpinismo americano di quegli anni e abbiamo così visto la storia di Willi Unsoeld (West Ridge Everest 1963), il professore 68ino che perde sua figlia in spedizione e il punkettaro Mark Twight, l'americano di Chamonix. Infine ho voluto dare un'occhiata a cosa succedesse nell'arrampicata italiana in quegli stessi anni e ho trovato materiale nel libro di Enrico Camanni, Nuovi Mattini. Abbiamo ascoltato le voci di Camanni stesso, di Jolly Lamerti, del bellissimo Manolo e di Andrea Dibbà. Ma soprattutto abbiamo fatto un viaggio attraverso delle persone, dei climber che sono alla ricerca di sé, della libera espressione di sé e quindi della felicità.

Gli anni '60 negli States sono stati di grande prosperità (e di grandi lacerazioni interne). Alla proposta sociale di un futuro prestabilito, c'è chi non accetta e cerca la sua propria strada trovandola nell'arrampicata. I primi climber sono quindi degli outsiders. You may not know who Peter Mortimer is, and that's fine by him. You're almost certainly intimate with is filmography, however, an ever-evolving array of groundbreaking films three decades in the making. Peter and his partners Josh Lowell and Nick Rosen (among many others) have collaborated to define the climbing film medium. They have literally delivered more climbing psych than any other humans on the planet. Peter, and his newly minted company Sender Films, launched his career with quirky turn-of-the-century features such as "Scary Faces," "Front Range Freaks," and "Return 2 Sender." Although the films sold out theaters, "King Lines," "Progression," and the "First Ascent" series truly put Sender on the map. Noting the insatiable hunger for new footage and a theater experience, Peter and Josh joined forces to launch the Reel Rock Film Tour. The crew booked around 50 shows that first year. Reel Rock 14 will log 600+ in 2019, spanning the globe. Somehow, amidst the chaos of building a global film tour, Peter found time to direct, produce, and occasionally helm the camera for "Valley Uprising" and "Dawn Wall," films years in the making. His highly anticipated feature following the career of Marc-Andre Leclerc inches toward the finish line, currently in post-production. It's difficult to overstate the influence and impact Peter's films have had on the climbing world. Where we once devoured DVDs of straight climbing porn (I mean, we still do), Sender's movies have raised the bar in unimaginable ways, allowing global tours, Netflix features, and paving the way to mainstream success (and, you know, the random Oscar for his friend Jimmy Chin). I was living in South Korea, teaching English during the weekdays and feverishly putting up FAs with a tight crew of expats during the weekends, when I first saw Sender Film's Pilgrimage. The film follows Chris Sharma, Katie Brown, and Nate Gold as they peruse the granite eggs dotting acre upon acre in Hampi, India. Sipping my Hite beer at night, I would watch it on repeat, mouth agape, heart quickening, annoying my non-climber roomie in some shithole apartment in an industrial enclave of Incheon. Dreams of climbing in Hampi finally gave way to planning. After a bit of salesmanship, I'd gathered a crew of six for a month-long foray into the land of the Vijyanagara Empire. Outside of shattering my tibia with five days to go, Hampi gave us adventure in spades, from leaping over king cobras to death highballs to the slow, colorful river life on the banks of the Tungabhadra. Pilgrimage made all of this possible. Ignoring the dangers of hyperbole, Pilgrimage changed all of our lives. Thundercling's first Sauce Night crashes into your ears as an homage to the dreams and aspirations we cull from climbing vids, from the rough and tumble Free Hueco to the finely-crafted character sketches of Free Solo and The Dawn Wall. We abuse our climbing movies. We steal beta. We foment dreams. West Coast Pimp sent me to Bishop, CA for the first time in 2001. Navigating Psychedelics Show Notes About James James has written a few psychedelic books, and is kind of a psychedelic icon His interests are in noveling and extreme sports journalism He wrote a book for Burning man, and gave away 500 copies at the festival He is a world class paragliding competitor He believes always being in nature is important In the late 80’s the psychedelic culture had crashed, except for the mountain towns, which is where psychedelic community ended up Joe lives in the Rockies, and was hanging out in Aspen and ran into an old hippie deadhead who talked about skiing on mescaline, when everyone would typically ski on acid In James new book he goes into psychedelics and extreme sports, about using a dose smaller than the psychedelic dose but larger than a micro dose Joe references a movie, Valley Uprising, where most of the climbers would hang out on the side of a mountain face, party all night, drop a bunch of acid and then sprint to the top James’ Interest in Psychedelics James says that 5-MEO-DMT converted him from to being a scientific, rationalist, atheist to agnostic, being merged and one with the god source, through the classic mystical experience He says it took him multiple years to figure out how a 40 minute trip experiences shifted his entire perspective for the rest of his life That's why he wrote his Burning Man book, as a way to help others relate to the experience and make their own sense of it Joe says James Book is far more fascinating than Michael Pollan’s Book, especially for people that have been in the psychedelic space for a while Michael Pollan states in his book that LSD was given to Tim Leary by Alfred Hubbard, but James says that's not true, he says that a man by the name of Michael Hollingsworth gave LSD to Leary, after coming to America with a jar of mayonnaise full of LSD James says its amusing for Pollan to form stories to fit his own narrative He says Pollan has talked about using psychedelics only four times, and that he doesn't like the psychedelic culture and by using them we will become more depressed James thinks depression is a result of the paradigm that we are in “I don't like the idea of psychedelics being used as bandaids to help people except the current paradigm, I like the idea of psychedelics being dynamite, to help bring the next paradigm shift” - James Smart people are depressed because they are realizing we are screwing this planet up, and we may not have that much time left on it He called it ‘extinction denial’ in his last book, and after writing his last book in 2009, its gotten exponentially worse Joe asks James why he thinks people are denying the extinction narrative James replies saying people feel like they can't do anything about it, they worry about paycheck to paycheck, and get caught up in all the small distractions of life. He says no wonder people are depressed Psychedelics aren't a Medicine James thinks the only reason they didn't take hold as medicines in the 60’s is because they were difficult to use, and didn't fit in the medical model “The problem with medicalization is it puts psychedelics in one box, I’m more interested in giving psychedelics to healthy people than sick people” They don't fall under the true classification of medicines James thinks they should be called therapy, instead of medicine He understands the interest of why people want to use them as medicines, but that shouldn't be the only way they are used Joe adds that the medicalization doesn't mean rescheduling - via drug policy alliance James says that last year alone had the most arrests for cannabis than any other year, even as more states are ‘legalizing’ Joe mentions a comment from Brian Normand who runs Psymposia, “Is cannabis really legal, if you can only have 6 plants? It's just heightened regulation.” James thinks that keeping cannabis illegal in the south is the main tool for racial profiling, it's the gateway drug to prison Brooklyn wants to release 20,000 cannabis offenders America James thinks living in America is like living in the belly of the beast There are so many forces at work in the US, James thinks the best thing for the world would be for it to break up in a few smaller countries, although it's probably not going to happen “It's not where you want to be, its where they'll have ya” - James The data that John Hopkins comes up with is what we need to fight the cognitive liberty we should have to take psychedelics Roland Griffith Joe says Stan Grof became uninterested in the research of psychedelics and became more interested in visionary art Creativity is what could help us survive “Art could be the next religion” - Alex Grey Reemergence of Spirit James thinks we are in an interesting time in history, all of the models and structures are collapsing, we are getting to an individualized view of everything. It hasn't healed anybody He believes that the ‘toad shaman’ culture will be eliminated once chemists start to synthesize 5-MEO-DMT The toads are coming from an overly populated desert, and with climate change, there is a lot of pressure on these species survival Final Thoughts James suggestions The 5-MEO-DMT experience is unique, it’s not like the typical psychedelic experience, not everyone should do it, and there are some serious negative side effects that could last for years if not integrated properly Start with classic psychedelics like LSD or mushrooms, and go for a walk outside Stan Grof’s house/library burnt down, Terence McKenna lost two libraries, and Jonathan Ott’s library burnt down. If you were lucky enough to get to see the recently released documentary film "Valley Uprising" about the history of climbing in the Yosemite Valley, broadcast on The Discovery Channel and now available online, than you are already aware of Producer/Filmmaker and President of Sender Films Pete Mortimer.   This week we get the chance to sit down with Pete in his Boulder Studio and hear about growing up in Colorado in the 70s and 80s and his early foray into rock climbing and making funny videos with his friends during his high school years.  After graduating from Colorado College, which seems to be producing some of worlds top climbers, photographers, and filmmakers, Pete set out on a journey that would have him in New York for several years, Film School in California, and adventures all over the globe, before he would finally settle back in Boulder to try and carve out his own place in the world of adventure film companies.  Many films and many years later, Pete has succeeded in making a name for himself in the world of documentary film making with his company Sender Films and his own film tour "The Reel Rock Film Festival".  Enjoy this conversation with someone who proves that you can create a company on your own terms....... His stoke and passion for flying is radical and his unique perspective on what makes human flight so special made for a stellar interview that was incredibly fun.

På 70-talet fanns det i den amerikanska nationalparken Yosemite en mytomspunnen subkultur. Bland bergen gick det att leva ett liv centrerat kring klättring, men här skapade man också egna regler för sig själva och naturen. Allt var dessutom på liv och död eftersom man tänjde på gränserna för vad som var möjligt inom klättring. Enligt Lynn Hill som räknas som en av världens mest kända klättrare handlade livsvalet om att bryta normer och få bestämma själv hur man ville leva, men också om att hitta en plats där man passade in. -Jag identifierade mig mycket med dom frigörande rörelser som fanns då. För mig var klättring bara ytterligare ett sätt att uttrycka att alla människor är olika på.Lynn Hill började åka till Yosemite redan som tonåring. Hon minns hur bergen kallade och hur på lektioner på högstadiet satt och skissade berg på lektionerna. Det Nya Utefolket har träffat Lynn Hill, en av de få överlevarna från 70-talsrörelsen i Yosemite. Många av hennes vänner dog på berget, tog livet av sig eller knarkade ihjäl sig, men hon gick vidare som professionell klättrare i Europa. I början av 90-talet återvände hon till Yosemite för att erövra den allra högsta toppen. En bedrift som det tog tjugo år för någon annan att upprepa. Det Nya Utefolket har även besökt Under Tallarna i Järna utanför Stockholm. Här har en grupp människor skapat en plats i naturen där de arbetar och lever.  -Här är vi skyddade av skogen och korpen vakar över allt vi gör, säger Robin Tidblom.Under Tallarna odlar sociala relationer parallellt med tomater och färska örter. Enligt gruppen finns det på den här platsen en alldeles speciell energi där de hämtar kraft. Vi har också träffat dokumentärfilmaren Pete Mortimer som har gjort dokumentärfilmen Valley Uprising som handlar om klättringskulturen i Yosemite på 70-talet. Hans drivkraft som filmskapare är att göra filmer om normbrytare så att människor ska se att det finns alternativa sätt att leva på. Sportandet är 2010-talets viktigaste trend. Maratonhets, härskarcyklism och nya gymformer har blivit den här tidens populärkulturer. Nu är det dags att gå vidare. Aldrig förr har så många dragits till skogs.
