Continuing our journey through Exodus, in today's episode we jump into the well-known story in which Israel builds a golden calf—and what follows. Exodus 32-34 is a section of the book that is actually central to understanding who God is and the story of the entire Old Testament. In our 12th episode in the book of Exodus, we chat about Ex. 32-34: Taking a turn from Ex. 1-31 Idol/god, idols/gods: is the golden calf meant to be a separate god or (still sinfully) a physical representation of Yahweh? In our tenth episode in the book of Exodus, we chat about Ex. 28-31: The priests' garments & the ephod Connections with the material & colors seen in the tabernacle The breastpiece of 28:15-30 The Urim & Thummim Israel represented by the priest The consecration of the priests—cleansing, anointing, offerings Suggestion for Bible reading: connect the offerings to the NT! Today's interview is with Dr. Carmen Imes, who is the Associate Professor of Old Testament at Biola University in La Mirada, CA. We talk to her about her excellent book, Bearing God's Name: Why Sinai Still Matters. We discuss what the command means when it says, “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain” (Ex. 20:7), and more broadly the role of the law in general. What does it mean to “bear” or “take” God's name in vain? How is the law actually missional for Israel being a light to the nations? How is the law applicable to believers today under the new covenant? We discuss these important questions and many more. We hope you enjoy this conversation as an addition to our time in Exodus this fall and winter. This interview also fits with the episode releasing this coming Monday on Ex. 19-24! In our seventh episode in the book of Exodus, we chat about Ex. 15:22-17:7, a section of the book featuring a recurring theme: the disobedience and complaints of Israel prior to a battle, a meal, and the arrival at Mt. Sinai (chs. 17-19). Today's conversation: Remembering the exodus event Three days into the wilderness—what happens? The theme of water in the book, carried into 15:22-25 Forgetfulness of Yahweh's Lordship 12 springs of water & 70 palm trees—potentially symbolic in addition to being historical The difference between a test & a temptation The grumbling of the people & the provision of the manna + quail How no collection on the 7th day points to the rest for the land & the Year of Jubilee in Lev. 25 How it may be difficult for us today to trust in the Lord for provision & feel dependence on Him daily How observing the Sabbath helps us grow in an identity rooted not in our performance but rather in the One who rested on the 7th day Israel begins to test Yahweh—a reversal 1 Cor. 10—Christ as the Rock here in Ex. 17 Grace in Ex. 17 * NOTE: While we would typically be releasing an interview this upcoming Thursday, it will be Thanksgiving! Today's interview is with Dr. Tom Schreiner, the James Buchanan Harrison Professor of New Testament Interpretation and Professor of Biblical Theology at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. Dr. Schreiner has written a ton of books, including several we love, including his Romans commentary and biblical theology. While Dr. Schreiner has done lots of work in Paul's letters and elsewhere in the NT, we talk to him about the book of Revelation! He has already written a short commentary on Revelation and has a forthcoming book on the topic—but he is working on a longer commentary on Revelation as well. Here we talk about: The central theme of the book of Revelation The biggest mistakes people make when they come to read Revelation The most important Old Testament books for understanding Revelation Some of the hiccups with reading the book “literally” Reading the symbols & numbers in Revelation: 7; 12; 144,000 Revelation as apocalyptic & prophecy How Satan parodies God, such as with the “false trinity” How Satan deceives today Schreiner's process for writing commentaries If God could give Dr. Schreiner one clarification on the book of Revelation, what would it be? New creation millennialism Terms/Ideas Referenced: Amillennialism: the 1,000 years of Rev. 20 are symbolic of right now, the “church age,” and at the end of this symbolic millennium, Jesus' second coming will occur—in sum, the millennium has been realized and we live in it now Premillennialism: Christ's second coming is before ('pre') the millennium; then Jesus will reign on the earth for a 1,000-yr. period (typically, but not always, a literal 1,000 yrs. in this view) Historic premillennialism: “historic” because many early in the church held this view—Jesus returns prior to a millennium on the earth, but after any period of “tribulation” in the present or future ("posttribulational") Dispensational premillennialism: still premillennial, but often with the emphasis on a future (usually 7-yr.) tribulation and also emphasizing God having future plans for Israel not fulfilled in the church (a "pretribulational" rapture of the church in this view) New creation millennialism: in another's words, “the thousand years of Revelation 20:1-10 begins at the glorious, world-shattering coming of Jesus Christ and has the new creation as its setting” Recommended Resources from Dr. Schreiner 40 Questions About the End Times (Schnabel) Beale's shorter commentary Jim Hamilton's commentary The Triumph of the Lamb (Johnson) Stephen Smalley's commentary Koester's commentary Breaking the Code (Metzger) Anything by John Frame Other Radically Normal interviews: On Tour w/ Caroline Cobb (#84) Union with Christ w/ Kyle Worley (#81) Trading Hustle and Hurry for the Goodness of Limits w/ Dr. Ashley Hales (#76) The Importance of Deuteronomy w/ Dr. Kyong-Jin Lee (#73) The Missionary Heart of the Book of Exodus w/ Dr. W. Today’s interview is with Dr. W. Ross Blackburn, who serves as the rector of Christ the King, an Anglican fellowship in North Carolina. We talk to him about how the book of Exodus, from beginning to end, has a missionary heart for God’s glory among the nations, based on Dr. Blackburn’s book The God Who Makes Himself Known: The Missionary Heart of the Book of Exodus. Listen to see how the exodus from Egypt, Israel’s time in the wilderness, their time at Sinai, the giving of the law, the golden calf, and the building of the tabernacle all fit into this one theme! He additionally provides considerable insight into why the Old Testament is so important for Christians today. Today’s title is a reference to episode #8, where we discussed five frequently misinterpreted Bible verses. Today is part 2 in light of a new misinterpreted verse we discuss, 6:14, which includes, “Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers.” Also, if you haven’t listened yet and are interested in learning about other misinterpreted verses, go check out that earlier episode from last July! In this episode we dive into Paul’s continuation of themes from 5:11-21, his ministry and its fruit, and the emphasis on proper allegiance to Christ. However, most importantly, we discuss how 6:14 is misinterpreted by many Christians as it pertains to dating and marriage and also how (and why) Paul incorporates OT books such as Exodus, Leviticus, Deuteronomy, Isaiah, and Ezekiel into this chapter. Passages, topics, & resources mentioned: Ex. 29:45-46 Lev. 26:11-12 Deut. 32 2 Sam. 7:14 Isa. 49:8; 52:11 Ezek. 20:34; 37:27 1 Cor. 8-9 2 Cor. 4; 5:11-21 Radically Normal YouTube // IG: @radicallynormalpod // Email: radicallynormalpod@gmail.com // Send us prayer requests or Q&A questions for the end of season 3!

Today’s interview is with Dr. Carl Trueman about his recent book The Rise and Triumph of the Modern Self: Cultural Amnesia, Expressive Individualism, and the Road to Sexual Revolution, a book of remarkable insight that shows the philosophical progression over the last several hundred years that has led to where we currently are with psychological identities, individualism, and the sexual revolution. As we (Michael writing here) interviewed Dr. Trueman, Andrei typed to me, “he’s too smart.” Andrei is right about Dr. Trueman’s insight, and we are also thankful for his comments on how Christians can respond to this cultural moment. In today’s discussion of 2 Cor. 3, we focus on Paul seeing the new covenant as a reality in the Corinthian Christians and our unveiled experience of God’s glory in comparison to Moses and the Israelites. Questions discussed: What are the “letters of recommendation” early in the passage? How does Paul connect passages in Jeremiah and Ezekiel to the Corinthian believers to defend his ministry? How does Paul view the law in relationship to grace and the gospel? What is the difference between the veil of Moses and the removed veil for those in Christ? What does it mean to behold the glory of the Lord with “unveiled face” (v. 18)? How does 3:18 connect to the ancient yet ongoing conversation about theosis and deification? (resource given below) Passages, topics, & resources mentioned: Ex. 34 Deut. 5:33 Ps. 19:7-10 Jer. 31:31-34 Ezek. 36:26-27 1 Cor. 6:15-20 2 Pet. 1:4 Jen Wilkin, Ten Words to Live By: Delighting in and Doing What God Commands Peter Gentry and Stephen Wellum, God's Kingdom through God's Covenants: A Concise Biblical Theology On Michael Gorman’s “resurrectional cruciformity,” see Participating in Christ: Explorations in Paul's Theology and Spirituality Theosis & deification (for more, see this article by Robert Rakestraw) Andrei quotes from Paul Barnett’s The Message of 2 Corinthians Radically Normal YouTube // IG: @radicallynormalpod // Email: radicallynormalpod@gmail.com // Send us prayer requests or Q&A questions for the end of season 3!

Just kidding (although that is part of the episode!) — today we kick off season 3 with an introduction to Paul and 2 Corinthians. This season, one chapter per week (Mondays), we’ll be diving into 2 Corinthians. Every other Thursday we will release an interview, the first one being this Thursday. A great way to center one’s life on the gospel and structure one’s life for joy is to create rhythms that shape the day-to-day and week-to-week in all domains of life. This is easily done with a “rule of life” – so today, looking ahead to 2021, we discuss making a rule of life and how it is beneficial. Happy New Year! Today’s episode is on the Crucifixion and atoning work of Jesus as the story unfolds in Mark 15. We also take short dives into theories of atonement and the theological significance of the supernatural darkness (v. 33), the temple curtain being torn in two (v. 38), Mark’s connections to the Transfiguration, and Jesus being the Suffering Servant of Isaiah 53. Additionally, we add some points about how Christians can speak to the trustworthiness of Mark’s story with regard to the Crucifixion and Resurrection. *episode title inspired by & many ideas learned from Jeremy Treat’s The Crucified King Radically Normal YouTube // IG: @radicallynormalpod // Email: radicallynormalpod@gmail.com // Send us prayer requests or Q&A questions for the end of season 2!

Mark 14 is a long chapter, and today we discuss each section, including Jesus’ prayer in Gethsemane, the Last Supper, and Peter’s denials. Additionally, as the topics come up, we discuss relevant points such as Jesus as the only way of redemption, regret vs. repentance, and how God as Trinity has one will, instead of a notion that the Father and Son have two distinct wills. Today we continue last week’s conversation on the end times! Last week, in part 1, we introduced ideas about a tribulation period and rapture and discussed three views on the millennium of Revelation 20. This is part 2 of the conversation, featuring an in-depth discussion of a “rapture” (primarily from pre-tribulation and post-tribulation viewpoints, as explained). Lastly, we talk about where we disagree and then close with a word regarding charity with believers of different viewpoints. Episode #49 may also be of interest, which covered some related topics as seen in Jesus’ Olivet Discourse in Mark 13. Feel free to contact us (see below) for our notes on this topic, and we will post them here or somewhere accessible. Also notice below that we are taking questions for our Season 2 Q&A that will release in early January – and feel free to throw in questions on this topic! Mark 13, featuring Jesus’ Olivet Discourse, is a tricky and heavily debated chapter. Here we try to sort that out, looking at the destruction of the temple, future trials and tribulation for God’s people, and the return of our Lord Jesus Christ. The Olivet Discourse is tied to the study of the end times (known as eschatology) – check out last Thursday’s episode and this upcoming Thursday episode for more on this topic! This is the 9th episode of This Week Meets the Cross, a weekly episode connecting a current event or noteworthy occurrence with the Bible. Each episode will be 5:03. Today, as December 15th approaches (when, in 1791, the U.S. ratified the Bill of Rights, which supports freedom of religion), and in light of recent conversations and Supreme Court cases about religious liberty, we discuss this concept – how the Bible talks about religious liberty and the government, freedom of conscience, and why Christians should support religious liberty for all people.
