Luke 24:50-53 and Acts 1:9-11 50 When he had led them out to the vicinity of Bethany, he lifted up his hands and blessed them. 51 While he was blessing them, he left them and was taken up into heaven. 52 Then they worshiped him and returned to Jerusalem with great joy. 53 And they stayed continually at the temple, praising God. 9 After he said this, he was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight. 10 They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going, when suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them. 11 "Men of Galilee," they said, "why do you stand here looking into the sky? This same Jesus, who has been taken from you into heaven, will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven." Lesson Notes Special Days Website: daysoftheyear.com Ascension Day: it is the 40th day of Easter. It is a Christian holiday that commemorates the belief of the bodily ascension of Jesus Christ into heaven. This year it was on Thursday, May 29. Book: The Ascension of Christ: Recovering a Neglected Doctrine by Patrick Schreiner. Five Reasons Why The Ascension Has Been Neglected: 1 The Bible speaks little of it 2 It seems like a bad plan. 3 The implications are unclear. 4 The event is abnormal. 5 The resurrection subsumes the ascension. Andrew Murray on the Ascension: “Faith has in its foundation four great cornerstones on which the building rests – the Divinity of Christ, the Incarnation, the Atonement on the Cross, and the Ascension to the Throne. The last one, the ascension, is the most wonderful, it is the crown of all the rest, it is the perfect revelation of what God has made Christ for us. And so, in the Christian life, it is the most important, for the ascension is the glorious fruit of all that goes before.” Discussion Questions 1. Have you ever been part of a church that has emphasized the ascension of Jesus Christ? Have you ever been part of a class or read a book about it? Would you agree that the ascension of Jesus Christ is a neglected doctrine? 2. Five reasons were shared as to why the ascension might be considered a neglected doctrine. Which one of the reasons do you think might have the most to do with its neglect? 3. In your own words, why do you think it is important to properly emphasize the ascension? 4. Discuss Andrew Murray's quote about the ascension. Do you agree that the ascension should be considered as the most important cornerstone of our faith? 5. Read again the above seven verses from Luke 24:50-53 and Acts 1:9-11. What stands out to you from these verses about the ascension of Jesus Christ?
The good news of Jesus includes his life, death, resurrection, and future return—but what about his ascension? Though often neglected or misunderstood, the ascension is integral to the gospel. In The Ascension of Christ: Recovering a Neglected Doctrine (Lexham Press), Patrick Schreiner argues that Jesus' work would be incomplete without his ascent to God's right hand. Not only a key moment in the gospel story, Jesus' ascension was necessary for his present ministry in and through the church. Schreiner argues that Jesus' residence in heaven marks a turning point in his three-fold offices of prophet, priest, and king. As prophet, Jesus builds the church and its witness. As priest, he intercedes before the Father. As king, he rules over all. A full appreciation of the ascension is essential for understanding the Bible, Christian doctrine, and Christ's ongoing work in the world. Pastor Taylor Shippy - Luke 9:28-36Transfiguration SundayWhat happened on the Mount of Transfiguration may be one of the most significant events in the life of Jesus that we rarely ever talk about.Three out of the four Gospel writers go out of their way to include this story (cf. Matt 17:1–13; Mk 9:2–13; Lk 9:28-36), which in itself ought to tell us something. Yet, despite its apparent importance in the eyes of the Gospel writers, in the words of New Testament scholar Patrick Schreiner, it seems the Transfiguration had a bigger impact on them than it usually does us.But maybe we ought to change that?

This week, we are airing the final session from The Gospel& Politics, a conference we put on in Summer of 2024. In this Question and Response time, Darren Larson asks Dr. Patrick Schreiner questions that came in all morning during the conference.
This teaching was recorded from the gathering of The Heights Church in Denver, CO. To learn more about The Heights Church, you can go to TheHeightsDenver.com Everyone wants to live a life that flourishes but few know the pathway into that kind of life. Most people are living in spiritual, financial, relational and emotional ruin. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus gives us a vision for how we were made to live and serves as our guide on the pathway back to flourishing. As we walk the path with Jesus this Fall, we are going to find that the way into flourishing is different than most people think. In fact, in many ways it is the exact opposite of what we are told in our cultural moment. Jonathan Pennington describes it this way, “The Sermon's answer to the human-flourishing question is that true human flourishing is only available through communion with the Father God through his revealed Son, Jesus, as we are empowered by the Holy Spirit. This flourishing is only experienced through faithful, heart-deep, whole-person discipleship, following Jesus' teachings and life, which situate the disciple into God's community or kingdom.” D.A. Carson calls the Sermon on the mount “Jesus' confrontation with the world.” Each week we will look at a broken vision of flourishing and compare it with Jesus' vision in the Sermon. We will use Jesus' mnemonic device “You have heard that it was said, but I say to you” in order to compare and contrast the world's vision of flourishing with Jesus' vision of flourishing.

This week, we are airing the second session from The Gospel& Politics, a conference we put on in Summer of 2024. In this talk, Dr. Patrick Schreiner talks about Christians as subversive prophets.
In a political climate where people are often fighting online and in other venues, many people try to stop the fighting by making the claim that Jesus wasn't political, or at least didn't have a political agenda in His ministry, and therefore we shouldn't be political either. Patrick Schreiner, author of Political Gospel: Public Witness in a Politically Crazy World, joins us today to shed some light on this claim. In this episode, hear Patrick's view on how believers can be appropriately political in line with their Christian faith. Enjoy! ^^

For many years, there was a lack of good Protestant literature addressing the transfiguration— a central event in the life of Christ. Thanks to Patrick Schreiner's new book, The Transfiguration of Christ: An Exegetical and Theological Reading, that is no longer the case. Patrick is an associate professor of New Testament and Biblical Theology at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and writes from a solid conservative Protestant evangelical perspective. So what is it that Protestants miss when we overlook the transfiguration? What is its significance and place in redemptive history, and how can it be applied? “I think the transfiguration is this unique event where the humanity and the deity of Christ come together, where his humanity is transfigured or transformed, but his deity is also revealed. This reality [is] that we have the God-Man in one subject and one person, and both things are made evident at the same time.” – Patrick Schreiner Be sure to tune in for this fascinating conversation on a much-neglected subject. You may gain a new perspective on the importance of this unique event in the life of Jesus and its practical application to our lives. And stay tuned to the end for barbeque recommendations in Kansas City! Humility. Through. This episode hangs on those two words, and how they relate to Christianity today. Joel Muddamalle, Director of Theology and Research for Proverbs 31 Ministries, wrote the book on humility, The Hidden Peace. He explains that true, Christian humility--living out the humble life of Jesus--will bring us to God who will get us through the hurts, the hard times, and the exhaustion of life today. We find peace in humility, in that awareness that the Lord is with us always. And knowing that God is with us means God will walk through every broken moment with us.Joel earned his PhD in Theology under the guidance of Dr. Patrick Schreiner and Dr. Michael Heiser. He serves on the preaching team at Transformation Church with Derwin Gray. He writes, studies, and teaches about scripture and theology and how they go hand-in-hand with our every day, busy lives. Matthew, Mark and Luke all describe Jesus ascending a mountain and then being transformed in front of three of his disciples (Matt 17:1-8; Mark 9:2-10; Luke 9:28-36). This is the event that Christians call the “transfiguration”. But why is it such an important event? What does it actually tell us about Jesus? Does it have anything to do with the Christian life? In this episode, Peter Orr talks to Dr Patrick Schreiner of Midwestern Baptist Seminary in the United States. He's just written a wonderful book on the transfiguration, and he shows us just how vital and important this event is for understanding Jesus and for living the Christian life. It is beneficial for Christians to be exposed to other traditions that are within the bounds of orthodoxy? If so, how are y'all doing that, personally and at church?Lately, I have been thinking of how on the cross Jesus took upon himself the full measure of the Father's wrath and how Jesus bore upon himself what was deserving for us. Also, at the same time, He gives us His righteousness in justification whereas now the Father sees us as holy through Jesus. It is something that I would love for you guys to expound upon that because it seems too awesome at times that Jesus both took what we deserved and gives us what is needed in order to be saved.Should Christians have “self-confidence”?
