POPULARITY
After 6 months, and voting on over 350 songs, we came to our final podcast discussion on Scotland's 30 Greatest Songs. Our friends on Twitter/X had already decided that Nothing Ever Happens by Del Amitri was the No 1 song - our podcast panel had the chance to debate this, and indeed the full top 10 that was voted in. Suffice to say, they weren't in agreement! We also managed to chat about tin hats, Anchorman & punching Danny Wilson ( no, really). And, we also had an offer from Colin to sing at Donna's wedding ( and a quick song rendition from Colin too) More importantly, our panel & friends got the chance to put together an alternative Top 10 ( which in turn generated a new number 1) Its been so much fun doing this series, and big thanks to Caroline, Donna & Colin for helping us sign this one off.( and for putting up with a couple of Zoom gremlins) We did chat about possible topics for our next podcast series, however thats all for another day...Until next time, enjoy and stay safe.
PART 2 of a 2-part BEST OF compilation of Karl Pilkington's ROCKBUSTERS (a cheap knockoff of Blockbusters) from the Xfm Ricky Gervais Show with Stephen Merchant. Not only was this one of Karl's longest running features (along with Monkey News), but it was also voted by fans as his greatest XFM feature of all time. Karl Pilkington gives a cryptic clue (it's usually nonsense) and the initials of a famous band or artist (he sometimes gets the initials wrong), and listeners either call, or as the feature developed (unless they were experiencing technical difficulties), email in their answers. The winner gets an arbitrary assortment of tat, often including a pointless DVD seemingly chosen at random from the bargain bucket. This 2-part BEST OF ROCKBUSTERS Compilation is based on the comprehensive 6-part ROCKBUSTERS compilation of every Rockbuster segment from the Xfm Ricky Gervais Show (released previously). CHAPTERS: Cilla Black, Small Faces, New Order (0:00) Bryan Ferry, Del Amitri, Chris de Burgh (8:02) Tony Bennett, The Darkness, Adam Faith (17:25) Alex Parks, Aztec Camera, Phil Collins (24:45) Gareth Gates, Texas, Delta Goodrem (31:45) Nik Kershaw, Soft Cell, OutKast (36:14) The Divine Comedy, Electric Six, Erasure (42:50) Courtney Love, The Bravery, The Monkees (48:31) Donovan, Yoko Ono, McFly (56:16) Lisa Stansfield, The Buggles, Amy Winehouse (1:03:26)

IT'S THE FINAL EPISODE OF 2024! Join Planet LP host Ted Asregadoo and Popdose's Keith Creighton as they wrap up an incredible year of music! In this jam-packed episode, Ted and Keith dive into their favorite songs and albums of 2024—not with a ranked list, but with thematic categories that make for a thoughtful and entertaining retrospective. In the first segment, Keith and Ted talk about bigger music trends like: -- The deluge of streaming content. -- The impact of AI on music creation -- and how Spotify reaps the profits from these non-human-created songs. -- The importance of human creativity in cultural expressions like music. Breakthroughs and Debuts Keith talks up the music by and film about Kneecap -- a hip-hop trio whose raps are entirely in Galic. Their current album Fine Art is available now. Fat Dog also tops Keith's breakthroughs and debuts this year. If you're into the early Ministry and that whole industrial genre, you'll love Woof by Fat Dog. Finally, The Waeve, a UK duo featuring singer-songwriters Graham Coxon and Rose Elinor Dougall. Keith said that if he did rank his albums this year, City Lights by The Waeve would top his list. Ted's Single Play picks are: "The Flood" by Allie Sandt. If you're a fan of Fleetwood Mac, Steely Dan, Paul Simon, or Madison Cunningham, Allie's music is a must-listen. With songwriting that reflects the depth and wisdom of an old soul, Allie weaves timeless influences into a sound that's uniquely her own. Her heartfelt lyrics and melodic craftsmanship show incredible promise, and Ted is rooting for her career to take off— because she truly deserves it. The second song is As For The Future's track "The Mob" -- a sly, samba-infused commentary on populism that's as counter-cultural as it is catchy. If you're a fan of Sergio Mendes and Brazil '66 or were hooked on Swing Out Sister back in 1987, this song will strike a chord. With its smooth grooves and clever lyrics, "The Mob" blends nostalgia with a fresh, modern edge—proof that As For The Future knows how to make a bold musical statement. Another UK Invasion The Last Dinner Party is a UK band that formed during COVID-19. Surprisingly, before they had a single out, they opened for The Rolling Stones. The Last Dinner Party is what Keith called a total "buzz band" that entertained the public and press with their live shows, fashion, and visual style. Their album, Prelude To Ecstasy did deliver the goods -- as it were -- and lived up to its hype. Irish shoegaze band NewDad, which Keith describes as "very sweet, tender, dark, shoegazing music," reminds him of Lush -- which made him spin the album many times since its release. And while Brigitte Calls Me Baby are not from the UK (they are from Chicago), Keith connected with their music because their style reminds him of The Smiths crossed with Elvis Presley. Their debut album is The Future Is Our Way Out. Ted's sort of Single Play picks for this segment are: A Planet LP favorite! Ward White's "Continuity" is a masterclass in wit, quirky storytelling, and exceptional musicianship. The opening line is irresistibly catchy—it sneaks into your head and stays there, a sure sign the song is working its magic. Ward's sharp sense of humor shines throughout, making "Continuity" both clever and captivating. It's a standout track that showcases his unique charm and talent. Though Ward is not from the UK, he sure sounds like he could be -- kind of like the band Brigitte Calls Me Baby. It Leads to This by The Pineapple Thief has been Ted's most-listened-to album of 2024—and for good reason. He was hooked after seeing them live in San Francisco on December 9th. While he admits to unfamiliarity with their older work, It Leads to This completely won him over. It balances heavy guitar riffs with a meditative, Pink Floyd-like, immersive, and introspective vibe. It might not be for everyone, but if atmospheric, thoughtful rock is your thing, It Leads to This is absolutely worth a listen. New Power Pop When it comes to power pop, think The Knack's "My Sharona," or Rick Springfield, and Cheap Trick. But what's when it comes to power pop in 2024 sometimes what's old is new again. Keith recommends a band that opened for The Beatles during the final tour and shared the same manager. That band is The Cyrkle -- whose unusual spelling was suggested by John Lennon. Their 2024 release on Big Stir Records is called Revival, and it's among Keith's most-played albums this year. Fun fact: Band member Tom Dawes (alas, he died in 2007) was a successful jingle writer after The Cyrkle disbanded. He wrote "Plop, Plop, Fizz, Fizz" for Alka-Seltzer, which ran in their ads from 1975-1980. Another power pop gem is The Half-Cubes, whose album Pop Treasures is a carefully curated album of cover songs that mine some tracks from 10cc, OMD, Del Amitri, and Trashcan Sinatras. Ted's Single Play picks are: Kula Shaker's "Indian Record Player" is a catchy pop anthem that seamlessly blends Western pop music sensibilities with a nostalgic nod to the golden age of Bollywood in the lyrics. Check out their latest release, Natural Magick. Galantis, David Guetta, and 5 Seconds of Summer team up for "Lighter," a feel-good anthem that's pure pop perfection. Clocking in at just 2:52, the song is packed with infectious hooks and an upbeat vibe that'll have you dancing from start to finish. It doesn't overstay its welcome or try to be overly complicated—it's simply a joyful, high-energy track with a great beat that's impossible to resist. Sometimes, all you need is a song like this to brighten your day and get you moving. Best Comebacks Keith's first comeback record is from The Libertines, All Quiet on the Eastern Esplanade -- which is an astonishing comeback considering the substance abuse problems of some of the band members, like vocalist and guitarist Pete Doherty. Check out the single "Run, Run, Run" which excels at presenting what a good pub band sounds like when they are sober. Guess who's back? The Zutons! Best known for writing Amy Winehouse's most famous cover song ("Valarie"), their latest album The Big Decider is such a strong album from a band that was on hiatus for years that most folks probably thought they broke up for good. Nope. Ted's picks center on bigger names like The Cure's Songs Of A Lost World. While the album is light on hooks, it's pretty heavy on misery, which, considering Robert Smith world view is not a surprise. While The Cure's music is not for everyone, those who loved their 1989 release Disintegration will find The Cure's latest album a very familiar experience. Pearl Jam knocked it out of the park with Dark Matter. The title track and the song "Won't Tell" are two that stood out in this incredibly strong collection of songs. Keith notes that a good amount of credit goes to producer Andrews Watt, who has a knack for bringing out the best in older acts like Pearl Jam, The Rolling Stones, Ozzy, and the like. Single Play highlights not related to comebacks: Paper Citizen's "Car Stereo"-- a song dedicated to the importance of friendship in one's life and right up there in Ted's top singles of 2024. Linkin Park's "The Emptiness Machine" is a welcome return to form. Now that they have a new singer, it has brought to the forefront a very 20-something energy that recalls Paramore back in the day. Music Royals While the boys like Kendrick Lamar and Drake dissed each other in 2024, the girls like Charlie XCX (brat), Ariana Grande (Eternal Sunshine and Wicked), Sabrina Carpenter (Short n' Sweet), Dua Lipa (Radical Optimism), and Chappell Roan where all about community and supporting each other's music and careers. And finally, as the Eras Tour came to a close, Taylor Swift showed what spreading the wealth means. She's now a billionaire, but she gave back to her employees with $100,000 bonuses after the tour ended. Now, as the year is winding down, Keith said he's going to spend a lot of time with Swift's The Tortured Poets Department, while Ted is going to spend more time looking for rock bands with whom he is unfamiliar -- you know, if we're being grammatically correct here.
A subtle song from band that never took over the world, but is a perfect representative of a rich and often overlooked time in music history, and a cover that leaves it all on the table. Always The Last To Know, originally by Del Amitri, covered by Jill Jackson. Outro music is Tell Her This, also by Del Amitri, who continue their tradition of naming their songs just a little differently than you think they should.

As an artist, David Richards has his bases covered. Musically, he writes, records, and releases his songs under the name of Loch Mhor (that's Scottish for great lake) and performs in an acoustic trio called Gil Sans. Visually, he is the founder and owner of BRING Studios, a graphics agency that specializes in video, web, and design. David takes his creativeness seriously, but he approaches life with a good amount of humor and warmth. Those elements are present in his creations and it makes David an artist that truly rises above the rest. The Black Crowes got their start as “Mr. Crowe's Garden” when Chris and Rich Robinson formed the band while attending Walton High School in Marietta, Georgia. The name comes from the children's book “Johnny Crow's Garden” by Leonard Leslie Brooke. They changed their name after moving to New York City where they met producer George Drakoulias who introduced them to music like The Faces and Humble Pie, and signed them at Def American. Their debut album, Shake Your Money Maker, gets its name from an old Elmore James blues song, though that song does not appear on the album. It was recorded in the summer of 1989 in Atlanta and Los Angeles. This debut turned out to be a rocket of an album, peaking at number 4 on the Billboard 200, and it has sold over 5 million copies. Readers of Rolling Stone magazine voted the Black Crowes “Best New American Band” at the end of 1990.The Black Crowes are often compared to late 60's and early 70's acts like the Faces and the Rolling Stones. The group at the time consisted of Chris Robinson on vocals, Rich Robinson on guitar, Jeff Cease on guitar (the only Black Crowes album for which he would be a member), Johnny Colt on bass and Steve Gorman on drums. The group would break up a couple of times, and reformed for a third time in 2019. They released an EP of newly recorded tracks called 1972 which consists of covers of songs released in 1972. They released a double live album in 2023 called Shake Your Money Maker Live.Bruce presents this album which reinterprets the blues. Jealous AgainThe debut single from the band and the album would reach number 75 on the Billboard Hot 100, and number 5 on the Billboard Album Rock Tracks charts. The song is about jealousy and the inner turmoil that it causes. There was a lawsuit against Gretchen Wilson for her song “Work Hard, Play Harder,” which was settled out of court. Chris and Rich Robinson were given songwriting credits for the track, along with an undisclosed sum in the settlement.Struttin' BluesThis deep cut will be unfamiliar to those who haven't played the album or CD, but it gives you a good flavor for the album as a whole. It is pretty much a straightforward blues piece. “My baby got her engine hummin' Struttin' blues gonna' find me again.”Twice As HardThis is the starting track to the album. The lyrics are about the difficulties of leaving a relationship for the second time, or perhaps about getting off drugs. One theory is that it is a little of both, with the first time being when the guy leaves his love over her use of drugs, and the second time when he says goodbye at her funeral. She Talks to AngelsOne of the bigger hits from the album, this song reached number 30 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 1 on the Albums tracks. The riff and the lyrics are older, going back to their early days. The picture of the girl is an amalgam of girls they saw at clubs in Atlanta who would dress goth. Much of the lyrics were written early in Chris and Rich Robinson's life when hey really hadn't lived the drug lifestyle that they talk about. The song inspired Hootie and The Blowfish's song “Let Her Cry.” ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main theme from the television series “Twin Peaks”David Lynch's quirky show got its start in this month. STAFF PICKS:Big Blue '82 by Daniella DaxWayne gets the staff pick party hopping with this deep but danceable cut. Danielle Dax is an experimental musician from England who tells a simple story of being newly in love with this song. Although not as well known in the States, Dax was big in the club circuit in Europe before switching to a career in interior design in 1996.Nothing Compares 2 by Sinead O'ConnorLynch brings us the unmistakable sound of O'Connor's biggest hit and cover of a song originally penned and performed by Prince. While the original was a funk and soul ballad, O'Connor strips the ballad down to a raw, emotional piece focusing on her powerful vocals.Big Love by Robert Plant Rob features Led Zeppelin's vocalist on a track from his third album, “Manic Nirvana.” This was the playful first single, and is filled with double entendres. Sexual innuendoes were common in Led Zeppelin songs, so this continues the tradition. It is about an affair with a flight attendant when it references “free air miles.” Kiss This Thing Goodbye by Del AmitriBruce closes out the staff picks with a shuffle beat song off Del Amitri's second studio album, “Waking Hours.” Del Amitri will be better known to U.S. listeners for their 1995 single, “Roll to Me.” This song tells the tale of a love that has been over for a while, and the couple need to make the decision to move on. LAUGH TRACK:Heartbreaker (At the End of Lonely Street) by Dread ZeppelinWhat do you get when you cross Led Zeppelin with an Elvis impersonator? Find out as we leave this week's podcast.

This record presents an intimate snapshot of the talent, charisma and depth of this celebrated Scottish indie songsmith - the start of a new chapter in Douglas' creative life as he simultaneously looks back at a lifetime of musical adventures and accolades and moves forwards. The album 'John Douglas' features new recordings of some of John's favourite Trashcan Sinatras material, alongside new songs he has written and his own rendition of the Prefab Sprout classic ‘We Let The Stars Go'. The eleven songs on this record were performed solo, recorded live at Kyoti Studio in Glasgow (with no overdubs) by producer Mark Freegard (New Model Army, Lush, The Breeders, Del Amitri, Marillion), who also mixed and mastered the album. “I've often been encouraged by friends over the years to make a solo album, but the timing or inclination didn't flow. Last year - out of nowhere - everything suddenly felt right and the process was quick and natural. Mark just set the mics up and I played my songs. No other musicians or overdubs. Me and my guitar. That way, I became the songs and they became me. The finished record, though varied in song styles, has a mood to it… it's warm, thoughtful and quiet.. as I generally aspire to be," says John Douglas.

John Ondrasik, better known as Five for Fighting, has been performing since childhood. And after several hit singles, he hasn't slowed down. He's currently touring with the Barenaked Ladies and Del Amitri. They'll be performing at the Mohegan Sun in July. In 2001, Ondrasik became a sensation after his single “Superman” was released and became a token tribute song to those lost in the September 11th attacks. Since then, he's been known for his emotional chart-topping anthems that defined the early 2000s. He has gone on to do extensive philanthropic work to support the troops. Last year, he recorded a music video in Ukraine. He knows that his music carries a lot of nostalgia for certain generations. Today, we're talking to John about his musical journey and his advocacy efforts throughout the years. GUEST: John Ondrasik: Singer-songwriter and pianist known as the platinum-selling, Grammy-nominated artist, Five For Fighting. More time travel before we snap back up to date with next month;s best of 2022 episode, This month we're in 1989 (the year, not the Taylor Swift album) where we're crashing the Exxon Valdez into the Berlin Wall (or something like that, I don't know, I was only 7...) We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Colin's wife Helen, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them back to Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. She also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year. Neil Taylor - C85 a new compilation on Cherry Red - in conversation with David Eastaugh 3CD collection pre-queling NME's huge selling C86 compilation. Featuring the best of the burgeoning indie scene from 1985. Including tracks from The Jesus And Mary Chain, The Stone Roses, That Petrol Emotion, The Woodentops, James, Del Amitri, The Housemartins and many more. Following the success of the three-disc compilation, ‘The Sun Shines Here' (which documented the roots of Indie Pop from 1980-84), the prequel to C86, C85 combines “name” bands with many obscurities making their debut on CD. Several acts on C85 would eventually feature on that NME's C86 collection: Primal Scream, The Wedding Present, the Mighty Lemon Drops, etc, who all had singles released in 1985.
