Mobil alışverişin yüzde altmışından fazlasını kadınların yaptığı bu on yıllık dönemde karar verici mekanizma tamamen kadının eline geçerken, erkekler genellikle sadece kadınların seçtiği ürünlerin kredi kartı şifresini giren kişi konumuna geriledi. 20 yıl önce sadece teknoloji meraklılarına bilgisayar parçası satan o internet, bugün herkesin her an cebinde taşıdığı devasa bir alışveriş merkezine dönüştü.

Most software teams still think of payments as a chore. We take you inside the playbook that turns it into a growth engine. I sits down with NMI CTO Phillip Goericke to unpack how embedded payments evolved from a basic checkout to a full-stack platform that handles onboarding, underwriting, payouts, analytics, and even embedded finance. The conversation is straight talk on what actually works when you're shipping fast and scaling globally. We dig into the architectural choices that matter: start with a no-code drop-in to activate revenue quickly, then progress to low-code SDKs and finally full APIs when you need deep control. Phillip shares where platforms stall - manual KYC, fragmented global rules, and data blind spots and how a modular approach fixes these without ripping out your stack. You'll hear how compliance-as-a-service, network tokenization, and adaptive 3D Secure can raise approval rates, reduce fraud, and simplify audits while keeping the checkout experience seamless.Looking ahead, we explore why identity, compliance, and data are the foundation for embedded finance. Philip outlines NMI's unified experience that brings payments, onboarding, insights, and new services like business capital into one place. We also tackle AI with clear eyes: use it to augment decisioning and anomaly detection, but wrap it with deterministic controls so money-critical outcomes are consistently right. The key takeaway is a mindset shift: stop treating payments as a feature and start using it as a strategic lever for revenue, retention, and product velocity. If you're building software with transactions anywhere in the flow, this is your blueprint for turning payments into a competitive moat. What if every time you went to pay for something at a store, the clerk behind the counter had a different terminal for each card network - one for Visa, another for American Express, and a few others for local domestic networks? That was what much of the world was like decades ago - and it still is a bit like that in some countries today. But in 1999, collaboration entered the picture when Europay, Visa, and Mastercard came together to create a common specification for Chip and PIN so that any chip-enabled card could be read from any chip reader anywhere in the world if both complied with a common EMV specification. That significantly impacted Chip and PIN adoption - for merchants and consumers. Today, EMVCo supports seven EMV technologies. As a consumer, when you insert your card into a reader, “tap to pay,” or pay using Secure Remote Commerce, or as a merchant, accept payment through a mobile device or a QR code, support a tokenized card credential, or 3D Secure technology, you are benefiting from the work of EMVCo. In this episode, we talk with Oliver Manahan to understand how EMVCo fulfills its mission, catch up on its 2023 initiatives, and try to peek over the horizon to see what might be in store next for EMVCo.

3D Secure, the first time through, created a lot of friction in the buying process for consumers that tended to leave them feeling more annoyed than secured, and more inclined to abandont their purchases. But as PAAY CTO Adam Gluck, explained, the new version has taken a lot of the pain out of the process, and turned 3DS into something that has the potential to truly change the security landscape for the better.

New research commissioned by Visa shows that over half of Irish consumers (53%) plan to continue shopping online where possible due to COVID-19, highlighting the growing importance of eCommerce to the Irish economy. Furthermore, restrictions on in-store trading during lockdown has spurred one in four (24%) Irish small businesses to begin selling online for the first time. Despite the increased appeal of eCommerce, thousands of Irish SMEs risk being unable to trade online successfully due to not having new security features enabled as part of the EU Payment Service Directive (PSD2). From 1st January 2021, online transactions in Europe will be subject to Strong Customer Authentication (SCA) measures – requiring banks to request additional information from consumers, such as a fingerprint or four-digit one-time passcode, to verify a purchase. Those businesses that have not prepared for the regulation, and therefore cannot always deliver compliant transactions, may find that banks have to decline customer payments. Given COVID-19 has been the primary focus for most Irish businesses over the past few months, Visa is highlighting the deadline for SCA compliance to ensure companies avoid disruption to their online services in the run-up to the crucial Christmas shopping period. The Visa-commissioned research found that 73% of Irish small businesses have a desire to increase their online presence. This is why Visa is urging Irish small businesses to contact the company that hosts their online checkout service to help them implement 3D Secure – in Visa’s view the technology most suited for meeting SCA requirements. Commenting on the research findings, Philip Konopik, Ireland Country Manager, Visa, said: “Since the outbreak of COVID-19, online trading has become increasingly vital for small businesses to reach their consumers. There is a real risk, however, that thousands of Irish small businesses will suddenly find this critical source of revenue switched off because they have failed to prepare for Strong Customer Authentication requirements. We understand that small businesses have other priorities in the current environment, but the deadline set by the European Banking Authority is approaching quickly. We are urging any Irish small businesses selling online to contact the company that hosts their online checkout service as soon as possible to switch on the most up-to-date 3D Secure technology and ensure that customers’ transactions are not declined come the New Year.”

The Internet of Things may be a hot topic but its security isn’t hot at all. Up until recently, IoT device manufacturers and buyers haven’t cared much about security, a disinterest that’s led to over one hundred thousand surveillance cameras being hijacked by Mirai botnet malware. While cameras aren’t making or accepting payments (yet) it’s easy to imagine automobiles paying for tolls and fuel directly. If it’s not my Roku box, maybe it’s Alexa or Google Home that makes payments on my behalf over the IoT. The payments industry is working to get out in front of this potential trouble.    EMVCo tokenization, now expressed in services like Apple Pay and Android Pay, is a leading tool in the payments security kit. 3D Secure. 2.0 services, when used in combination with other security layers, should have a role in IoT payments security, too. Join Tim Sherwin, Co-Founder and CEO of Visa’s CardinalCommerce unit and Glenbrook’s George Peabody in this deep dive into 3DS 2.0, where it works, who pays for it, and its expected role in the IoT.

One of last year's most anticipated advances in fraud management was the final release of EMVCo’s 3D Secure 2.0 protocol specification. Designed to take a risk-based approach to authorization and lower the checkout friction of its predecessor, 3DS2 will be a new tool in the growing anti-fraud arsenal. One of its supporters and a service provider that’s been closely tied to 3D Secure is CardinalCommerce. Cardinal, now a new addition to Visa’s arsenal with its recent acquisition, has been working with the risk-based approach for quite awhile. Take a listen to Visa’s Mark Nelson and Mike Keresman and Tim Sherwin of CardinalCommerce in this discussion about 3DS2, card network mandates, Cardinal’s acquisition by Visa, and when the market will see 3DS2 solutions.

3D Secure, the protocol that connects ecommerce merchants to the cardholder's issuer, has had a rough go. But after ten years, smarter application of the tool and, in particular, risk-based usage makes it more attractive to both issuers and merchants. In this conversation with Mike Roche, VP of Consumer Authentication at Cardinal Commerce, we take a deep dive into 3D Secure, its implementation and continuing evolution, expectations of increased card not present fraud due to EMV's US arrival, and its positive effect on merchant sales and issuer spend.

The domain of point of sale (POS) has three legs to its security stool: EMV, point to point encryption, and card number tokenization. Card not present (CNP) merchants and issuers have the more challenging task of assembling fraud mitigation tools on their own. The networks have had, until EMVCo's move into payment card tokenization, not much more than 3D Secure to offer. Merchants and card issuers have a lot of transaction and fraud data and when that data gets shared, improvements are possible. That's what Ethoca is about. Its growing network of merchants and issuers share their fraud data to improve fraud detection and lower chargeback rates. Take a listen to this discussion with Keith Briscoe, Ethoca's CMO, on what's possible through collaboration.
