Episode 30: Should I get the AFC (Accredited Financial Counselor) designation? Today, join Josh and Garrett as they talk to special guests Jarod Taylor (Certification Manager at the AFCPE) and Ambus Hunter (AFC Candidate) from the AFCPE to talk about financial coaching certifications. 3(+2) key takeaways: There is no legal requirement to be a financial coach, but the AFC certification gives you credibility and confidence, helps you minimize blind spots in your coaching, and gives you access to continuing ed. Just because no one has asked you what your qualifications are doesn't mean that no one cares. We don't know how many people don't contact us because they don't see a certification! For *financial coaching,* the AFC is literally the highest level of certification that exists. Three pillars of the AFC: personal finance, debt management, and financial counseling. AFC vs. CFP vs. something else - Think about where you are now, and where you want to be in the future. I'm busting out extra Cuban coffee for a chat with my Colombian friend, Jen Hemphill, a proud Latina who is an amazing feminist who is here to serve and help people manage their money better. Her tagline, “Dinero done with confidence” speaks volumes about what Jen does. Her focus is on helping others get the clarity they need to get their money under control. Listen in and discover why Jen is such a bad-ass in the financial space - and definitely check out her podcast Her Dinero Matters because you're in for a real treat! Our Emotional Connection to Money "What I realize is how I connect at the mindset level is similar to buying a home. When you go and search for a house, you want to make sure that house is in good working condition, including the foundation." Comparing the home's foundation to your money mindset, Jen says that your mindset is your money headquarters. "The foundation of your financial home is your money headquarters. You're always going to have issues or a barrier because of your mindset." And mindset work is not something that's once and done. Money mindset is a process that you have to continuously work with. "It's important for people to understand their upbringing, because that impacts your mindset, which impacts your relationship with money." Meet Jen Hemphill Jen Hemphill is a military spouse and proud bilingual Latina who helps busy, career-oriented women become the Reina, or Queen, of her money. Bethany and Ellie kick off the show talking about an article written by Michael Peggs for The Muse called 5 Reasons to Consider Changing Careers. They discuss different ways to pronounce epitome before introducing Rebecca Wiggins, the director of the Association for Financial Counseling and Planning Education (AFCPE). Rebecca joins the conversation sharing her reasons she loves waking up in the morning and working for AFCPE. She also tells more about the organization, how she got involved with them, and their goals for the company. AFCPE believes that all people, regardless of income level or background, have access to the highest level of professionalism just like we have come to expect for people with wealth. She also talks about what an AFC (Accredited Financial Counselor) is and how people are able to get that certification, and how it was designed as a way for Military spouses to have a portable career. Rebecca hasn't always been the director of AFCPE. Before she started this position, Rebecca went to school for music performance. She was always interested in social work fields. She ended up getting into education and outreach in the non-profit world through the arts. Those skills of program management translated well into the AFCPE world. She has held many different hats along the way and continued to grow into being the Executive Director. Jen Hemphill, a military spouse & proud bilingual Latina, helps women who are tired of the traditional money advice gain a renewed sense of control, confidence and freedom in their financial life.  She is a Money Confidence Coach, an AFC® (Accredited Financial Counselor) and host of the Her Money Matters® Podcast.  Her first book, Her Money Matters: The Missing Truths From Traditional Money Advice, helps to fill the missing gaps for when you are financially stuck. Story Behind The Book Jen had no intention to ever write a book. Perfectionism held her back from ever adding it to her bucket list. Until one day, a publisher approached her and asked if she was interested in writing a book. Jen realized it was a great opportunity that she couldn’t pass up. In the process, Jen was able to observe her journey around money and mold her advice more around why she was getting stuck. Traditional Money Advice We have all heard the same traditional money advice, but sometimes it doesn’t work that cut and dry. You work so hard on what you are supposed to do, but often it doesn’t work out the way it should. Jen believes a big problem is that we aren’t talking enough about the emotional part of it… the money mindset. Money Headquarters When Jen refers to your money headquarters it is essentially a hub for your money. When you build a house, you start with the foundation, which is like your money mindset. Then you build from there, piece by piece. The next piece is money actions, then money skills. If you don’t have a strong foundation, just like a house, its not going to be steady. Takeaway From The Book Confidence. “Grab the confidence and run with it.” Links Website: http://jenhemphill.comBook: http://jenhemphill.com/book Thank You to Our Sponsors LOLA: Organic cotton feminine care in customized assortments delivered to your door. ind Jen here: Website // Facebook // Instagram // Twitter  // Podcast Jen Hemphill is a motivational money coach, AFC® (Accredited Financial Counselor), wife and mom with a big heart. She's passionate about helping today's busy go-getter women easily simplify the area of money so they can focus on the more important things in life like their family and just living that amazing life they envision. When she's not talking money, she enjoys photography, coffee, chocolate, traveling, working out and dates with her husband and two sons. We had a great time chatting with fellow milspouse, Jen! Like many milspouses her career path changed due to the military lifestyle. After having her first baby she and her husband decided she would stay home. That meant she left her higher paying job and they figured out to continue to make things work on one income. This is how Jen became interested in financial literacy and learning more about sharing financial literacy with women. As we do every week, we start out by asking Jen what success is to her, and her answer is of course awesome! "For me success is not necessarily a finite dollar number or anything like that. But it's really more about achieving a goal where you're pushing yourself beyond your comfort zone." We talk about how so often the media influences our definition of success, when as Jen says, "We really create our own success and define what our own success is." Jen shares how her definition of success shifted with she started her money coaching business. She had set a bunch of goals for herself and when she wasn't reaching some of them she go frustrated. Her husband reminded her that she is affecting the lives of so many women.  This is where her shifted happened, she realized some times we as women forget to see all the good we are doing. Jen shares with us why she started her podcast, Her Money Matters and well as her next big project! {Listen to find out!} Jen also shares her love for Lewis Howes' podcast episode with Arianna Huffington as well as Arianna's Super Soul Sunday episode with Oprah.
