Have you ever walked into a shop and noticed right away, this place is different. The hospitality, the quality, the feel, the energy, and the comfort and confidence you and the staff feel together is a synergy born from purposeful work behind the scenes. It is a work not just to assemble people and equipment under one roof and call it done, but work to tend to the things that animate, sustain, and breathe life into it. In today's episode we are going to be exploring some of the ways you can bring your coffee shop to life in a way that is truly a singular thing. Not born from R+D around trends, financial management, or logistical prowess, (although you do need those) but from an embrace and pursuit of the relationships between people, their work, and the place the work is done that creates remarkable moments and experiences for all. In this thought-provoking episode, I sit down with Oscar Trimboli—author of 'how to listen"—to explore a skill often overlooked in negotiation training: self-assessment. While Oscar's expertise lies in deep listening, our conversation quickly uncovered a powerful crossover between listening and reflective learning, particularly in the context of negotiation practice. Together, we unpack the psychological difference between receiving feedback from others and assessing your own performance. Oscar shares powerful insights and practical examples from both neuroscience and professional experience, highlighting why developing a strong ‘self-assessment muscle' is essential for long-term improvement. Once you hire the right people for your cafe you move on to the next decision, how to work with them to give them to set them and the business up for success. Too often the way we place and lead people is based on their job description and not so much based on their individual characteristics. How much better would your shop run if your team was given the opportunity to work in areas where they were strong and their weaknesses were not our dominant pre-occupation? Today we are goin to dive into this subject with a re-airing of a classic episode for 2019 all about working through strengths with my friend, Lisa Cummings! Lisa and her team serve large teams and organizations to help them leverage the results of the CliftonStrengths (formerly StrengthsFinder) assessment. She is also the host of the popular Lead Through Strengths podcast. In this episode we are going to talk about the ways in which we can focus on and utilize our own strengths and facilitate the same opportunity for those we lead in the coffee shop. You're not creating content for content sake. You're building a platform that will command attention. To succeed, you need to become someone worth listening to. COMMAND ATTENTION BY BECOMING SOMEONE WORTH LISTENING TO In today's episode, we dive into the importance of becoming someone worth listening to. It's the only way to command attention. It's not about having the perfect microphone or even launching the slickest podcast. It's about who you are and how you connect with your audience. Your success requires stepping into the spotlight authentically and creating a platform that will command attention. Let's explore how you can attract listeners and build impactful relationships by truly being yourself. COMMAND ATTENTION WITH THE POWER OF PRESENCE It's all about presence, not just the platform. We often get caught up in the technicalities of podcasting, from RSS feeds to sound quality, but those aren't the cornerstones of success. The true power lies in who you are when you're on the mic. I shared my journey in radio, learning the importance of presence from legendary hosts who commanded rooms. Your voice and personality are what make your podcast resonate. By leaning into your unique identity, you can become someone people not only enjoy but remember. This is how you command attention. UNIQUE VOICE, UNIQUE SUCCESS Finding your unique voice is key to distinguishing yourself from the sea of sameness. I spoke about how I transitioned from imitating others to discovering my own identity in radio. This critical shift allowed me to build a connection with my audience. When I made my shift, people began recognizing me on the street. This was not because I was famous, but because they felt they knew me through my stories and genuine engagement. The same principle applies to your content. To command attention, embrace your uniqueness and share your journey. This will grow your influence. DON'T SETTLE FOR JUST AN AUDIENCE Growing your audience isn't just about numbers; it's about creating raving fans who would follow you anywhere. Many content creators struggle because they aim for listeners rather than influence. When I worked with hosts like Oscar Trimboli, a listening expert, we transformed his show to highlight his expertise and personality. This in turn, drew in an audience keen on his insights. It's about moving beyond mere content to establish trust and authority with your listeners. LET ME HELP YOU ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS Being worth listening to in order to command attention isn't something that happens overnight. It requires strategy and commitment to share who you authentically are. That's why I'm here as your coach. Whether you're just starting or looking to level up, let me guide you. Together, we can refine your approach and uncover the aspects of your personality that captivate your audience. Visit podcasttalentcoach.com/apply for a personalized coaching session. Let's turn your podcast into a platform that leaves a lasting impact so you can command attention.

Dr. Laura welcomes Oscar Trimboli, award-winning author, podcast host, and global expert on listening, to the show to talk about listening and how our inability to listen properly is hurting us at work and beyond. Oscar worked extensively in marketing and technology in his career and has a lot of experience in consulting with organizations, all of which give him great insight into the way people listen, or don't listen, to each other and how to change that.Oscar traces his work in listening back to a boardroom in 2008 where he was challenged by the CEO's statement to him: “If you could code how you listen, you could change the world”. He explains that the difference between hearing and listening is action. His new book, How to Listen, addresses research on the subject of listening as well as guidance into listening to what is said and not simply our interpretations of what we hear. Dr. Laura and Oscar discuss different ineffective listening styles that people often fall into and Oscar's tips on how to improve listening. Oscar's insight will resonate with everyone who hears this episode and challenge us to really listen, and not just hear, what he's saying. “So please just be conscious that you can improve your listening simply by asking people one extra question, or simply by knowing that the word listen and the word silent have exactly the same letters. So if you just wanted one tip from our conversation today, that would be it. … Therefore just be silent just a little bit longer and you'll be surprised. That breath they've taken doesn't mean they've finished what they're saying. They're just collecting their thoughts.” Oscar TrimboliAbout Oscar Trimboli:Oscar Trimboli is an author, host of the Apple award-winning podcast Deep Listening and a sought-after keynote speaker. Michael is a bestselling author of nine books and a familiar face on the international conference circuit, having shared the stage with the likes of Bill Gates, Dr. John C. How then, do you influence someone when they are really convinced of their position? In this conversation, Michael and I discuss the initial steps that help in changing people's minds. Key Points Our tendency is to convince to the inquiring mind, but we'll do better if we speak to the instinctive mind first. Help others lessen loss and maintain dignity by preserving titles, language, and symbols in things that are new. Instead of trying making an argument, ask a question that allows the other person to listen to themselves. Ask questions that clarify points of resistance or misunderstanding. The interview with Oscar Trimboli was about deep listening skills to extract insights for leaders to become better listeners and communicators. Key Takeaways We discuss "what's the cost of not listening?" early in the interview to draw people in.Listen with your whole body - drink water, play music etc. to ground yourself before meetings.Ask for feedback subtly by asking "what's one thing you'd change about this meeting?" rather than directly. Topics: Oscar's journey to deep listening As a teenager, Oscar's protruding jaw made him self-conscious so he learned to ask good questions and listen to avoid drawing attention to himself.Playing card games with diverse nationalities, Oscar learned to read body language and non-verbal cues since they spoke other languages.A pivotal moment was when his Microsoft VP told him he could "change the world" if he could code how to listen well. Productive vs unproductive ego Ego can be useful to protect us but unproductive when trying to dominate others.Leaders should ask if their ego is being productive or not in conversations.Productive ego invites perspectives from whole group before speaking again. Whole body listening Listen with your whole body by grounding yourself before meetings (drink water, play music etc.)As host, don't start meetings on the hour - give a 5 minute buffer for people to transition.Do walking 1-on-1 meetings to fully tune in. Leaning into emotional conversations Don't run from emotional conversations - ask "when did you form this perspective?" to dig deeper.Silence draws out truth; pauses are okay and even powerful. Seeking feedback as a leader Don't directly ask for feedback from low-trust relationships.Subtly ask "what's one thing you'd change?" or "how would you summarize this meeting?" Heather Younger: The Art of Active Listening Heather Younger is an experienced international keynote speaker, best-selling author, CEO, and Founder of Employee Fanatix. Known as The Employee Whisperer, Heather harnesses humor, warmth, and an instant relatability to engage and uplift audiences and inspire them into action. She is a Certified Diversity Professional, certified in Emotional and Social Intelligence and DiSC, and is also the author of three books. Her previous best-selling book, The Art of Caring Leadership: How Leading with Heart Uplifts Teams and Organizations, was praised for offering powerful insights for developing authentic, thoughtful, and purposeful leaders and change-makers. She's the author of The Art of Active Listening: How People at Work Feel Heard, Valued, and Understood*. When you know how to listen, people will share more. We may or may not always be able to resolve every concern, but we can be sure others are heard. In this conversation, Heather and I discuss how we can shift from listening for what we want to hear towards listening for what we need to learn. Key Points Some issues can only be resolved through better listening. That alone makes this a critical skill for leaders. When you know how to listen, people will bring things to you. Listen for not what you want to hear but what you want to learn. Listening is not just about what's been said, but also about what is seen. Get beyond simply, “What I hear you saying is…” Some leaders have a fear about the direction that a response might take a conversation. Remember that often people first and foremost want to be heard, regardless of what happens next. Nobody is ready to listen at every moment. Taking time to center yourself for a conversation in a few minutes or later in the day can be helpful for both parties.
