Professor Barry Zellen is a research scholar in the Department of Geography at the University of Connecticut and is a Senior Fellow (Arctic Security) of the Institute of the North. His recent book is: “Arctic Exceptionalism: Cooperation in a Contested World.” The Antarctic Treaty System convened the states that have an interest in the area but no legal claims. The United Nations, through its treaties, has been instrumental in setting up international laws that have provided stability for both areas at polar opposites. Treaties on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, Law of the Sea and the IMO Polar Code are the linchpins. Arctic Exceptionalism is a reflection of inherently cooperating and warfare was the exception. The eight states in the Arctic Council include the US, Russia, Canada, Sweden, Norway, Iceland, Finland and Greenland. The invasion of Ukraine by Russia upended this delicate balance and challenged the stability of Arctic Exceptionalism.

MY NEW NORM Podcast- S4 E13 / P2Host: BARRY SCOTT YOUNGEpisode: A LOOK BEHIND THE MICA BEAR- NOOGA PRODUCTIONA LOOK BEHIND THE MIC- Part 2With more than 50 episodes behind me, I am often asked how do you find people? If you don't know, I was in fully time ministry for over 35 years. That's a lot of exposure to people. A good portion of that time was in youth ministry. It was a blast investing in the lives of young people – it was a privilege. So not only do I have decades of those relationships to pull from but also from those we fellowshipped and ministered with. Life exposes you to people – people have stories and I think, most stories are meant to be shared –again, that's testimony. After living in California most of my 60-something life and starting new in Tennessee, I've found new connections and friendship of which I can also pull from. There is also the “I know a guy who knows a guy” resource. I keep a running list of people who drop into my mind and pull from that list. And let me put this out there – if any of my listeners know that guy or gal, give me a ring. That answer segways easily into the “what challenges do I face” question. The list doesn't always produce the outcome of a guest – people are not ready to share, to shy, or sometimes just too busy. And that's okay – I learned to trust the process. Then there is the personal struggle – myself. I don't script the podcasts. I want to make them the most natural conversations I can. Sometimes I listen to myself and wish I'd say something different, or I hear the struggle of getting some words out that sound weird due to the strokes affect on my speech. But I can say this – I recently listened to my first podcast and felt so encouraged to hear that my speech has improved. I'm so grateful that my initial purpose of beginning this podcast was to help me with my speech challenges and even I can hear the improvement. I'd say technical issues are pretty low on my list of challenges, but they do happen – but that gives me the opportunity to up my game and skill level - and when I overcome it… it's a pretty great feeling. I really didn't know how long this podcast would last, honestly, it's already gone beyond where I thought it would go, both with the audience and time. But I can tell you this – I AM having fun – I love the renewed friendships – some of my guests and I haven't touched base in decades and man, there's nothing like friendships where you can look back and see not only what people have endured and overcome, but the faithfulness of God. I love hearing their stories – I love the authenticity of real life and a willingness to share. It will often bring tears to my eyes or make me laugh. It's interesting and I would probably want to do this if I only had a few listeners. So, to wrap this up, I hope you've gained a little bit of what goes on in the background and how the My New Norm podcast got started and how it's been such a positive addition to my life…. and I hope yours too; whether you pop in for a listen every once in a while or don't miss an episode, I greatly appreciate your interest and support. I hope to continue to bring many more stories - your stories - to the podcast. And If you want to share it with others - that would be great. If you ever have questions or comments, I welcome them. This is Barry Scott Young, and this has been a look behind the mic, thanks for listening!mynewnorm.buzzsprout.com/ / Find us on all major podcast platforms!
MY NEW NORM Podcast- S4 E12 / P1Speaker: BARRY SCOTT YOUNG Episode: A LOOK BEHIND THE MIC A LOOK BEHIND THE MIC- Part 1I guess you can say that the origins of this podcast began in 2020 when I suffered a major stroke. If you're one of my original listeners, you know the story, but as a quick recap, the stroke left me unable to move my right side, walk, talk or even swallow for a time. After a lot of rehab, prayer and my strong will, here I am today, walking (okay, maybe my form is a bit zombie-like, but walking none the less), talking, and living life as a stroke survivor. I recall while laying in my hospital bed and coming to terms that I would never be able to go back to what I once was – this thought came to my mind –“I have to focus on where I am – where I want to go, and not where I use to be.” So here we are 4 seasons into what started for me as a form of speech therapy and finding a new purpose. First and foremost a huge thank you to you, the listener, the supporter, the encourager. You have been all those things to me, and words really can't express how much that means to me. It blows my mind that this podcast has listeners from countless countries and hundreds of cities across the world. I started out happy if my immediate family would listen to an episode.Today, I want to give you a look behind the Mic, if you will. -Where do I record? -how do I find people? -what are my challenges? -am I having fun?-and where am I heading and what comes next?Barb and I have a great home in Tennessee. She works from home and kindly shares her office with me where I edit and work from my computer. So to answer the question I often get “do you have your own studio” No. That would be my dream, but this podcast started in our master bedroom closet. I read somewhere that clothes closets make for great sound proofing. We drug a table, chair, my computer, and a mic in the closet twice a month and that's where the magic started. I was pretty cautious about background noise but have since realized that recording from our Kitchen table or even the office – when Barb's not working, works just as well. Maybe with a huge lottery winning, I'll have space to build my own studio someday. The magic of editing also helps if the dog decides to bark or a kid selling candy bars rings the doorbell. Another question is what equipment do I use? I started with my computer and a software program with a $25 dollar USB mic. Here's where I insert a huge thank you to one of the greatest guys I know, Barry De Hart. He gifted me a Rode caster mixing unit. Little did he know this was on my wish list for years… I use that with my pod mic and feel like I'm driving a Ferrari every time I record. I use Zoom during the recording to allow for a virtual face/face experience with my guests. You may not know this fun fact about me, but I started out in college in Communications/TV Productions in California. Ending up in ministry, I never pursued that so it's been a fun surprise late in life to go back to my early interest in production. Real People Real Stories, that's my tag line. I have my story, you have yours, and there are some really amazing stories out there. In my most recent episode, my guest John Vertefeuille said “behind every face there's a story” – how true that's been. Most often I find people don't think they have much to say or share, but I think that's what's made this podcast so relatable – testimony is a powerful thing – people can relate and identify, even if the circumstances are different, others can be encouraged by the fortitude, strength or faith people have to live through their stories. …to be continued. Part 2!
When all about you are losing their marbles... Greece is trying to claim theirs back. And it's computer says no from Rishi Sunak who has decided to start a diplomatic war with Greece because he doesn't want to give them back their marbles - which is exactly the response you'd expect from our populist PM, and incidentally, also a spoilt toddler. Then it's onto our new Home Secretary, James Cleverly, who, despite the House of Commons being laden with cameras and microphones, decided to direct profanities at the entire constituency of Stockton, and then despite recorded evidence of exactly this, tell us he didn't. More records are smashed for Sunak - just in the wrong direction to what he promised with this week's revelation of unprecedented migration figures. And Richard Tice takes to X to chat about climate change in a clip that gives Cillit Bang's, Barry Scott a run for his money. Underrated tweet is a naughty little jab at GB News from Aid Thompsin and for pudding, comedian James Acaster gives his take on the Elgin marbles debacle. Tom's away, so this week you get a gloriously anarchic gangster movie episode in which Matt and Dave Bulmer completely forget what's supposed to be happening whilst pitching an origin story for British infomercial star Barry Scott. Other movies pitched: An Offer You Can't Recycle
In today's episode we speak with Keiran Rogers from Affirm Press, Barry Scott from Transit Lounge and Louise Stark from Hachette. In this series of surprisingly frank and transparent conversations we learn that publishers LURVE books (almost) as much as booksellers, AND are great conversationalists. The collective generosity of these three publishers to have open discussions plus willingly subject themselves to some potentially contentious questions cannot be overstated and we are immensely grateful. We learnt a lot and think you will too.
On this weeks 'Thoughts Of A Monday' I talk about the sober journey I'm still on and how things may be beginning to change. Time enjoyed in places you used to love start to become a waste of time. I used to strive to be happy more than I did to be better, but what I've come to realise is that making myself better, makes me happy. Also I meant to say Jesus was Keith Barry

This Thursday Wes and some of our leadership group are going to explore with us why our NCS breakfasts are so important and why we need to tell our own stories to each other. I was trying to think of a way of making this sound “exciting,” when I received a story from Chip Arnold (who spoke last Spring) about Barry Scott (who spoke 2-1/2 years ago). This story is a bit long, but it's worth reading.

Donna -My son Ben was born in 1994 to a Mom who was an insulin dependent diabetic and had already lost another child at 12 weeks ….1 1/2 prior to Ben’s birth. When Ben was born he was perfectly healthy and mine and Greg’s bundle of Joy. As he grew of course as a Mom and a teacher I watched and monitored his growth and milestones. At age one he was babbling and saying Mama and Dada and then all of a sudden that just stopped and he stopped giving us eye contact and started pushing us away. Red flags started going off in my mind and I talked to his pediatrician and he said not to worry that it would come. Well… it continued to get worse and by age 2 1/2 our baby was diagnosed with moderate-severe Autism. Our whole world felt like it had crumbled around us. The hopes and plans and dreams we had dreamed for Ben were shattered. After a major pitty party and questioning God, Greg and I both prayed for the Lords strength and for God to use our test as a testimony. As we watched Ben grow we noticed that he loved music and was fascinated with guitars. We bought every kind of toy musical instrument he would even act like he was interested in. When he was 8 years old we bought him his first real child size guitar. He would strum it and try to chord it and absolutely loved it! I told him as he grew that if he would learn to play I would get him a nice guitar. As he grew all our Christmases became musical. He asked for different instruments each Christmas and his Granny, his Aunt Vickie and other members of our family would always get Ben something musical for his gift. Some friends of ours got Ben a DVD that had several lessons for beginners on how to play the guitar. Ben would go in his room and go through each lesson until he had it and then move on to the next lesson. By age 14 Ben had mastered all lessons and was playing on his own. A dear friend of our, Barry Scott helped him with his timing and rhythm. In the meantime I had showed Ben some chords on the piano and he began playing piano as well. So in 2012 after not being on the road singing for almost 9 years, I felt God calling us back into a ministry. We formed The Journeys. I sing, Ben plays, and my husband Greg speaks about raising a child with Autism. Ben is amazing and has been a blessing to so many. Without God nothing is possible but with God all things are possible. We thank God for our blessings every day!

Since less is more in both design and writing and since we as a society scan quickly rather than read, words matter as much as ever. Yet we've reduced the value of some and clouded the meaning of others.Ultimate is supposed to mean the best imaginable of its kind. A student used it as an example of horrible messaging by a restaurant featuring Ultimate Nachos that barely filled the plate.Value is to describe the importance or usefulness of something. Yet it's often used to describe something that is cheaper and offers less/The dynamic duo of inaccurate descriptors Exceptional—to mean outstanding—and Unique—unlike anything else rarely describe something outstanding or unlike anything else. Then there's the triumvirate of meaningless inaccuracies: Literally. Honestly. Absolutely.I literally can't honestly explain how these words absolutely are used inappropriately. Well, actually I can. They aren't.Awesome. Right. You don't have to misuse these words to communicate in a memorable way. Don't take the lazy way. Instead, say what you really mean. Choose your words as if they matter because they do. This week in news we discuss the multiple attempts at Virtual Reality that are set to compete this year; how The Order: 1866 did in this week's sales charts; what the current (hopefully final) GTA V release date is for the PC and much more. Then in our feature, we've managed to get a hold of some first-person testimony from real survivors (though obviously not actually real, come on now) of video game violence. Barry Scott will be your guide down this rabbit hole of tragedy and accents. Then in What Have We Been Playing, Don embarks on a great journey, Gareth wages war and Rob... erm, pays off his mortgage. Barry Scott, a member of the 80's band The States, formed a new band and recorded a great Beatlesque cd called "Who Else". I'd like to provide a link to Barry, but it appears his website is no more. I have info that he's moved to California, so I'm hoping that he'll still be writing and recording and come up with another website soon. Until then.....
