Creationtide VII   Genesis
(1:11-12, 20-22, 24-26a, 31a)   Then God said, “Let the earth put forth vegetation: plants yielding seed and fruit trees of every kind on earth that bear fruit with the seed in it.” And it was so. The earth brought forth vegetation: plants yielding seed of every kind and trees of every kind bearing fruit with the seed in it. And God saw that it was good.   And God said, “Let the waters bring forth swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the dome of the sky.” So God created the great sea monsters and every living creature that moves, of every kind, with which the waters swarm and every winged bird of every kind. And God saw that it was good. God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the waters in the seas, and let birds multiply on the earth.”   Then God said, “Let us make humans in our image, according to our likeness.” God saw everything that he had made, and indeed, it was very good.     Psalm 65   1 Praise is due to you, O God, in Zion; and to you shall vows be performed, 2 O you who answer prayer! To you all flesh shall come. 3 When deeds of iniquity overwhelm us, you forgive our transgressions. 4 Happy are those whom you choose and bring near to live in your courts. We shall be satisfied with the goodness of your house, your holy temple. 5   By awesome deeds you answer us with deliverance, O God of our salvation; you are the hope of all the ends of the earth and of the farthest seas. 6 By youra strength you established the mountains; you are girded with might. 7 You silence the roaring of the seas, the roaring of their waves, the tumult of the peoples. 8 Those who live at earth's farthest bounds are awed by your signs; you make the gateways of the morning and the evening shout for joy. 9   You visit the earth and water it, you greatly enrich it; the river of God is full of water; you provide the people with grain, for so you have prepared it. 10 You water its furrows abundantly, settling its ridges, softening it with showers, and blessing its growth. 11 You crown the year with your bounty; your wagon tracks overflow with richness. 12 The pastures of the wilderness overflow, the hills gird themselves with joy, 13 the meadows clothe themselves with flocks, the valleys deck themselves with grain, they shout and sing together for joy.       Colossians 1:15-20   He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation, for in him all things in heaven and on earth were created, things visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or powers—all things have been created through him and for him. He himself is before all things, and in him all things hold together. He is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, so that he might come to have first place in everything. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him God was pleased to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, by making peace through the blood of his cross. Lector: Hear what the Spirit is saying! All: Thanks be to God!     Luke12:22-32   Jesus said to his disciples, “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat, or about your body, what you will wear. For life is more than food and the body more than clothing. Consider the ravens: they neither sow nor reap, they have neither storehouse nor barn, and yet God feeds them. Of how much more value are you than the birds! And which of you by worrying can add a single hour to your span of life? If then you are not able to do so small a thing as that, why do you worry about the rest? Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, how much more will he clothe you, you of little faith! And do not keep seeking what you are to eat and what you are to drink, and do not keep worrying. For it is the nations of the world that seek all these things, and your Father knows that you need them. Instead, seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well. “Do not be afraid, little flock, for it is your Father's good pleasure to give you the kingdom.

SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER Rev. Kendra Lovelace Balliet Music Director: Jim Ross Prelude - Canticle - Gilbert Martin Welcome *Call to Worship Leader: Jesus made a charcoal fire to make breakfast, and Jesus beckoned the disciples to bring some of their fresh-caught fish. All: Abundance is meant to be shared. Jesus shows us how to serve and care. Leader: Jesus said, “Come and have breakfast” giving bread and fish to each disciple. All: In our fear of scarcity, we sometimes are hesitant to share, but Jesus shows us how. Leader: After offering sustenance to the weary disciples, Jesus turned to Simon Peter and asked: “Do you love me?” Peter said, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” Jesus said: “Feed my lambs.” All: Often we discover the love language of our faith by sharing with others. Leader: A second time, Jesus asked Peter, “Do you love me?” Peter said, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” Jesus said: “Tend my sheep.” All: We can grow in faith by caring for others. Leader: A third time, Jesus asked Peter, “Do you love me?” Peter felt hurt at the repeated request and said, “Lord, you know everything, you know that I love you.” Jesus said: “Feed my sheep.” All: We are called to feed and tend to the needs of all people, especially those in need of liberation from hunger and oppression. Leader: Jesus reminded the disciples that we all will need help at times in our lives. Then, Jesus said, “Follow me.” All: We open our hearts and hands and resources to make better the circumstances of all people for living and thriving. Leader: This is a Word of Hope for the people who long for it. All: Thanks be to the Living Word. *Opening Hymn “Lord of the Dance” #261 *Opening Prayer Lord Jesus, Rise up in us and we will rise From death into a newfound life: From bondage freed, from harm released, From illness healed, as one in peace. FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER Rev. Kendra Lovelace Balliet Music Director: Jim Ross Prelude - Wondrous Love- Dale Wood(Organ) Mallet Melody-Kevin McChesney(Bells) Gathering at the Gate Welcome *Call to Worship Leader: The disciples returned to the Sea of Galilee, a place where they had spent much time in ministry with Jesus, when he appeared to them again by the shore. All: When we struggle or face an uncertain future, we sometimes seek familiar places, geographies of the heart, places that offer us a sense of being well. Leader: Simon Peter said to the disciples gathered with him: “I’m going fishing.” The disciples eagerly joined him in the boat, but they fished all night and caught nothing. All: Even when our lives have been altered and our paths have changed, setbacks can tempt us to try to go back to the way things were before. Leader: Just after daybreak, Jesus stood on the beach, but the disciples did not recognize him. Jesus said, “Children, you have no fish, have you?” The disciples said, “No.” All: Regardless of how futile our old ways were, we try them again, finding false comfort in the familiar, yet not truly finding the healing we seek. Leader: Jesus told the disciples to cast their net on the other side of the boat. They followed his direction and caught so many fish they were unable to haul in the net. All: We can become so overwhelmed with struggles that we forget to let go of our frustrations in order to seek new ways of being, new paths to peace. Leader: Amid the flopping fish, the disciple whom Jesus loved recognized him, saying, “It is the Lord.” Peter put clothes on and jumped into the sea–eager to rush to Jesus. All: When we embrace new ways of being in the midst of life-changing circumstances, we often are filled with hope. Leader: The other disciples, seeing that they were not far from land, used the boat to drag the bulging nets ashore. All: When faced with permanent obstacles, rather than repeat what once worked, we can shift our perspective to other ways of well-being. Leader: This is a Word of Hope for the people who long for it. All: Thanks be to the Living Word. *Opening Hymn “God of Grace and God of Glory” #577 *Opening Prayer Merciful One, you know when we are afraid to love; you know when we are too cowardly to show mercy. Remind us again that perfect love casts out such fears. Surround us and strengthen us with your perfect love, even in the face of our imperfections. FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER Rev. Kendra Lovelace Balliet Organist: James Ross Prelude - Fughetta - Theodore Dubois Gathering at the Gate Welcome *Call to Worship (Based on John 20:19-23) Leader: In 12-step recovery programs, the first step is admitting powerlessness over anything that threatens to destroy our connection to our Higher Power, to ourselves, and to others. This week, we consider the variety of ways addiction occurs in our lives. We will celebrate the Good News that we can refocus our lives onto things that lead us to life and connection to the Holy. All: Rise up in us and we will rise from death into a newfound life: from bondage freed, from harm released, from illness healed, as one in peace. When all is lost our hearts are warmed, our hope restored, our lives transformed. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! Leader: They trembled in fear behind locked doors as the sun set on that first Easter… People: We often do not perceive the most transformative possibilities of our lives because we are afraid — of change, of loss, afraid even of healing. Leader: Jesus broke through the barrier of their hiding place and stood among them… People: Even when we long for our burdens to be lifted, we become so accustomed to carrying them we cannot imagine being released from them. Leader: Jesus greeted them with the words: “Peace be with you.” People:: We sometimes find it difficult to embrace peace when our lives are in upheaval, when our hearts grieve, when our world aches. Leader: Knowing what they needed, Jesus extended his pierced palms and his stabbed side… People: What evidence do we require to believe our lives can experience resurrection from a power higher than our own? What helps us trust and believe? Leader: They rejoiced as they recognized their friend, their leader, their Solace and Redeemer… People: When we search for help and hope, do we rejoice when we see the first possibility of transformation? Do we rejoice along the way to healing? Leader: Again, Jesus offered his peace and said, as he was sent by God, he now sends them… People: Even in the midst of our own turmoil, can we find the courage to go where we are sent for healing for ourselves and to go where others are in need of our witness? Leader: Jesus breathed on them and said: “Receive the Holy Spirit.” People: The gift of Holy Spirit power is always with us and within us to lead and guide and sometimes cajole and awaken us to all the possibilities for renewed life. Leader: Jesus assured them: Forgive the sins of anyone, and they are forgiven, retain the sins of any and they are retained. All: We see in the example of Christ how to forgive others and how to release our own woundedness. We open ourselves to the freedom, release, and peace that comes through forgiveness. We forgive ourselves and we forgive others. Leader: This is a Word of Hope for the people who long for it. All: Thanks be to the Living Word. *Opening Hymn "Savior, Like A Shepherd Lead Us” #381 *Opening Prayer All: Living Word, whose love abides in us, you call us to love in truth and action. THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER Guest Preacher: Kurt B. Crays, CEO - Erie United Methodist Alliance Organist: James Ross Prelude - Scherzoso- Joseph Rhineberger Gathering at the Gate Welcome *Call to Worship (based on Luke 24:36-43) Leader: What is it like to literally not have a home, a place to lay your head at night? “Homeless” can also mean a sense of not feeling “at home,” lacking a feeling of belonging, feeling alone even in the midst of others. So many in this world are isolated. How can we find, and offer each other, “home” with the assurance of the presence of God and a beloved community? People: Rise up in us and we will rise From death into a newfound life: From bondage freed, from harm released, From illness healed, as one in peace. When all is lost our hearts are warmed, Our hope restored, our lives transformed. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia! Leader: Jesus appeared among the disciples again. He stood among them and said: “Peace be with you.” Yet, the disciples were terrified. They thought they were seeing a ghost. People: Centering our hearts and minds in peace is a way to feel calm within. We learn to still ourselves to be open to unimaginable possibilities. Leader: Jesus asked: “Why are you frightened and why do doubts arise in your hearts?” People: Doubts play an important role in our faith journey. Facing our uncertainties allows room for our hearts and minds to be filled with healing narratives. Leader: “Touch me and see,” Jesus invited, as he offered his pierced hands and feet. Yet, the disciples — even in the midst of their joy — felt disbelief. People: Sometimes we are presented with signs of hope long before we realize we are not abandoned. Our hearts rejoice, yet our minds still wonder at what we have seen. Leader: Jesus asked if they had anything to eat, and the disciples shared a piece of fish, which Jesus ate while in their presence. All: Jesus frequently shows us how to create community in the midst of feeling lost. We can form communities of sustenance and belonging. We are not alone – we are found – when we share Christ’s call to peace. Leader: This is a Word of Hope for the people who long for it. All: Thanks be to the Living Word. *Opening Hymn "What A Friend We Have in Jesus” #526 *Opening Prayer Leader: "Christ is Risen!" All: “He is risen indeed!” We repeat our Easter shouts of surprise and joy again and again, for news of your victory over powers of death and evil is news so startling so amazing so different from the news that bombards us day by day. Beyond our comprehension You startle us again and again with resurrection Life, bringing grace and hope and joy. You, in your risen power, are shaping all our days, and so we praise you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen. Confession of Faith: The World Methodist Social Affirmation #886 Gloria Patri Children's Chat Music Ministry and Offertory - Meditation on Need-George Brandon Doxology and Prayer of Gratitude Proclaiming Home Scripture Mark 12:28-31 Sermon: “Won't You Be My Neighbor?” Responding to Being Found Joys/Concerns Hymn "Jesus, Keep Me Near the Cross" #301 Pastoral Prayer/Lord's Prayer Closing Hymn “I Love to Tell the Story” #156 vs 1-5 Verse 5: The Savior of our stories has brought his peace to you; now go and tell the story, for others need it too. SECOND SUNDAY OF EASTER Rev. Kendra Balliet Organist: James Ross Prelude - Meditation on Just As I Am-Elizabeth A. Krouse Gathering at the Gate Welcome *Call to Worship Leader: They were on the road to Emmaus… People: We travel so many roads, so many journeys in this life, sometimes traveling towards, sometimes away from, a life of freedom. Leader: Jesus came and fell into step with them, but they did not recognize him… People: We are sometimes so overwhelmed with the struggles of this world that we can’t see the Companion that walks alongside us. Leader: Jesus asked them what they were talking about… People: We have recited our stories of pain so often that we can’t imagine there are other ways to interpret events, to get past the regret. Leader: They explained the horror of the recent past, about their friend who was crucified and their disappointment at dreams of liberation dashed… People: We so often think we’ve hit the end of the road, the finale of the story, with nothing left to say. Leader: Then Jesus began to tell the story as a bigger picture… People: We sometimes perceive only the parts that feel insurmountable without zooming out to notice the larger narrative of hope. Leader: They invited Jesus to dinner after such a long walk… People: We actually know how to reach for help, even when we don’t realize we need it. Leader: Jesus took the bread, blessed, broke and gave it to them… People: We are capable of having our eyes opened to the presence of Love in our midst. Leader: Jesus vanished from the room as quickly as he had appeared on the road but they were left with the awe and wonder of having their hearts transformed… All: We open to the possibility that nothing is closed, that our hearts can be opened anytime, anywhere, and resurrection from death-dealing forces is possible. Leader: This is a Word of Hope for the people who long for it. All: Thanks be to the Living Word. *Opening Hymn "Easter People, Raise Your Voices” #304 *Opening Prayer God of abundance, We are thankful for the beauty all around us. Weave us together in a life full of goodness and joy. Help us to move in harmony with one another and with all Creation. Let us travel on your path toward release in your presence. Amen. Creationtide V - Animals The Book of Job (39:1–18) “Do you know when the mountain goats give birth? Do you observe the calving of the deer? Can you number the months that they fulfill, and do you know the time when they give birth, when they crouch to give birth to their offspring and are delivered of their young? Their young ones become strong; they grow up in the open; they go forth and do not return to them. “Who has let the wild ass go free? Who has loosed the bonds of the swift ass, to which I have given the steppe for its home, the salt land for its dwelling place? It scorns the tumult of the city; it does not hear the shouts of the driver. It ranges the mountains as its pasture, and it searches after every green thing. “Is the wild ox willing to serve you? Will it spend the night at your crib? Can you tie it in the furrow with ropes, or will it harrow the valleys after you? Will you depend on it because its strength is great, and will you hand over your labor to it? Do you have faith in it that it will return and bring your grain to your threshing floor? “The ostrich's wings flap wildly, though its pinions lack plumage. For it leaves its eggs to the earth and lets them be warmed on the ground, forgetting that a foot may crush them and that a wild animal may trample them. It deals cruelly with its young, as if they were not its own; though its labor should be in vain, yet it has no fear; because God has made it forget wisdom and given it no share in understanding. When it spreads its plumes aloft, it laughs at the horse and its rider. Lector: Hear what the Spirit is saying! All: Thanks be to God!   PSALM 121 1 I lift up my eyes to the /hills; * from where is my help to /come? 2 My help comes from the /LORD, * the maker of heaven and /earth. 3 The LORD will not let your /foot be moved * and the One who watches over you will not fall a/sleep. 4 Behold, the One who keeps watch over /Israel * shall neither slumber nor /sleep; 5 It is the LORD who watches /over you; * the LORD is your shade at your right /hand, 6 So that the sun shall not strike you by /day, * nor the moon by /night. 7 The LORD shall preserve you from all /evil; * the LORD shall keep you /safe. 8 The LORD shall watch over your going out — and your coming /in, * from this time forth for ever/more. Second Lesson: A Reading from the Letter of Paul to the Romans (12:9-21) Let love be genuine; hate what is evil; hold fast to what is good; love one another with mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honor. Do not lag in zeal; be ardent in spirit; serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope; be patient in affliction; persevere in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints; pursue hospitality to strangers. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice; weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with on another; do not be arrogant, but associate with the lowly; do not claim to be wiser than you are. Do not repay anyone evil for evil, but take thought for what is noble in the sight of all. If it is possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine; I will repay, says the Lord.” Instead, “if your enemies are hungry, feed them; if they are thirsty, give them something to drink, for by doing this you will heap burning coals on their heads.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. The Gospel: Matthew 11:25-30 At that time Jesus said, “I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. All things have been handed over to me by my Father, and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. “Come to me, all you who are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

Creationtide I - Mountains First Lesson: Joel 1: 8-10, 17-20 Lament like a virgin dressed in sackcloth for the husband of her youth. The grain offering and the drink offering are cut off from the house of the LORD. The priests mourn, the ministers of the LORD. The fields are devastated, the ground mourns, for the grain is destroyed, the wine dries up, the oil fails. The seed shrivels under the clods; the storehouses are desolate; the granaries are ruined because the grain has withered. How the animals groan! The herds of cattle wander about because there is no pasture for them; even the flocks of sheep are perishing. To you, O LORD, I cry, for fire has devoured the pastures of the wilderness, and flames have burned all the trees of the field. Even the wild animals cry to you because the watercourses are dried up, and fire has devoured the pastures of the wilderness. Lector: Hear what the Spirit is saying! All: Thanks be to God!   PSALM 18:6-20 Diligam te, Domine.   Second Lesson: Romans 8:18-27 I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory about to be revealed to us. For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the children of God, for the creation was subjected to futility, not of its own will, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be set free from its enslavement to decay and will obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. We know that the whole creation has been groaning together as it suffers together the pains of labor, and not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the first fruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly while we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies. For in hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope, for who hopes for what one already sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience. Likewise, the Spirit helps us in our weakness, for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with groanings too deep for words. And God, who searches hearts, knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.

Yet there are many Christians who have false understanding or make false assumptions about this important biblical doctrine. In this series, we'll unpack the Bible's teaching on Conversion and gain the comforts and assurances that God intends to give.  We'll use the book Conversion from the People's Bible Teachings series as our guide as we embark on learning more about this topic.  You can purchase the book from Grace at a discounted rate or by clicking this link.  Even if you don't have the book, you can still join us and grow from our discussion.  Make sure to find the other titles in this series or check out a different series or one of our sermons from Grace on our Most Certainly True podcast channel.  We'd love to have you were grow with us.  Check out more about our ministry or connect with a pastor at www.gracedowntown.org.   Thanks for listening!Music in the introduction is "What Grace is This!" which is reproduced with permission under CCLI License # 20219559.

This is a guide, not a rule. You may feel free to change anything to fit your abilities as worshipers.Much like our early church brothers and sisters:Use the gifts available to you. Lead as skillfully as you are able. Be creative. Glorify God. Seek to be formed into the image of Christ. In other words: Worship.PreparationConsider lighting a candle, incense, essential oils, or something else to signal that worship has begun and that God is present wherever and whenever you are or where two or more gather in God’s name.GATHERING----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------CALL TO WORSHIPWhen we worship, we acknowledge that God is the one who calls us to himself. If there is more than one person gathered with you, choose one person in your family or group to read as ONE and another to read as ALL. These may continue as ONE and ALL throughout this time or new readers may be selected for each movement.ONE: Praise the Lord, who has shown us the wonders of his unfailing love;and who, for the sake of his name, leads us and guides us.ALL: In you, O Lord, we put our trust. You are our God,and our lives are in your hands.ONE: Lord, let the light of your face shine on usas we celebrate together in your presence. Let us pray…ALL: Loving God, we have gathered to meet you.We have come to listen to you,to seek you, to worship you.You are the beginning of all things, the life of all things; you knew us before we were born.In you we become; in you we live.Loving God, you are here and everywhere, around us and within us; you know our inmost thoughts. In you we hope; in you we live. You are the source of serenity, giving peace that is beyond our understanding. In you we are still; in you we live.Loving God, we live in you; we worship you.Loving God, you live in us; we worship you. Amen.PraiseWe are always responding to God’s voice and actions in worship. Here, we respond to God’s call by remembering what God is like, what God has done for us, and what God has done throughout history.Take a few moments and reflect on where, when, and how you saw God at work this past week.SING!! one or more of the songs below or any song that talks about God’s goodness, greatness, love, faithfulness, etc.:Psalm 46 (Lord of Hosts) -Shane & Shane (lyric music video)The Lord is Good -Fred Hammond (lyric music video)ConfessionGod invites us to confess the wrong that we have done so that God can remind us that we are forgiven through Christ. Amen.Assurance of ForgivenessGod reminds us that we are forgiven in Christ and calls us to live as forgiven people by forgiving and loving others as we have been forgiven and loved by God.ONE: To all who turn from sin in sorrow,to all who turn to God in hope, this is God’s Word of grace:We are accepted, we are forgiven, we are loved. This gift we have from God.Thanks be to God.ALL: Thanks be to God.SING!! one or more of the songs below or any song about God’s grace and forgiveness:Blessed Assurance -Elevation Worship (lyric music video)Be Still My Soul / What a Friend We Have in Jesus -Selah (lyric music video)WORD----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Prayer for IlluminationWe ask God to illuminate, shed light upon, or reveal what God has to say to us today.Speak these words together or have ONE say a line and ALL repeat line by line.Lord God, thank you for giving us the Bible.Thank you that through reading itwe can learn more about youand learn to love you more.Send your Spirit to help us understand your Wordand to help us grow. For Jesus’ sake, Amen.SERMON: Worried Sick (Philippians 4:6) -Pastor AJLive Video Experience at 10am: https://live.restorationphl.orgAudio Podcast: https://www.restorationphl.org/media/category/philipians-46-march-22-2020PrayerSpend some time praying for the world. Pray freely as you feel led or ONE may pray the following aloud:A Prayer for Anxious TimesGracious God, Champion of the Universe, we so often fluff ourselves up.Aren’t we the only creatures who compose masterpieces of music and art? Don’t we govern ourselves, enrich ourselves, promote ourselves? Can’t we dunk basketballs, bat baseballs, spike volleyballs? Aren’t some of us masters of comic irony? Other creatures don’t practice rocket science. We do.And yet. Here we are, frightened by a thing so small it can’t be seen under most microscopes. It’s not even an animal or a plant. It’s a virus, a mere parasite, dependent on our own living cells to replicate. And yet it has shuttered our schools, cancelled our flights, and emptied our churches. It has consumed the attention of our leading scientists, wrenched our politics out of shape, dominated our conversations, and scared the daylights out of us.We don’t want to get sick. And we don’t want to die.We are afraid, O God. Afraid of a microorganism. Afraid of each other.Great and quiet source of peace, quiet our fears. We are wary, uncertain, strung tight. Quiet our fears. We have no idea what the future will bring, but we do know you will be in our future to hold us there. We cannot quiet ourselves, O God. We cannot comfort ourselves, cannot heal ourselves, cannot help ourselves. All we can do is wash our hands and keep our distance. Our rocket science is no good to us for this threat.O God, great and quiet source of peace, quiet us, your anxious ones, and let us cling for comfort to your suffering Son, Jesus Christ. Gather us under his wings. Remind us that he suffers with us, but he’s also the great physician. In him, let us not be afraid. Please, let us not be afraid.Amen.TABLE----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The Lord’s Supper / CommunionHere God feeds us with heavenly food which is a taste and a sign of God's kingdom. Much like any family meal, this meal is special not because it is rare, but because it is common. Everytime we celebrate communion we get a glimpse of God’s kingdom.Consider moving to the kitchen or to the dining table.Prepare your feast by gathering the following:Bread: If you don’t have bread use crackers, or rice cakes, or leftover pancakes from breakfast...get creative! Anything that is nourishing will do!Juice: If you don’t have grape juice use orange juice, or any other juice you have available. Milk will also do (consider adding a bit of honey to remind yourself of God’s Promised Land of milk & honey). Get creative...any sensible drink will do...even water! Before you celebrate and eat together, pray this prayer:ONE: Thank you God, for creating the world, for creating us in your image, and for showing your love for us by sending Jesus to save us.ALL: Thank you God, for our Savior, Jesus Christ who died for us, rose from the grave, and who is coming again.ONE: Send your Holy Spirit to make Jesus real to us in this meal and to connect us with Christians who have lived before us and who will live after us.Words of InstitutionRemembering Jesus’ instructions at the Last Supper before his crucifixion.ONE: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this in remembrance of me.” For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.—based on 1 Corinthians 11:23-26, NIVBreak the bread (or a cracker, etc.)Each worshiper may serve another simply saying “This is for you.”Worshipers may respond with “Thanks be to God” or “And also for you”.Take your time as you serve and receive.Consider the joy of resurrection and Christ’s presence with you.Dwell in the joyful and confident hope of Christ’s return.Listen to this song while you celebrate or as a reflection after. Feel free to sing along with the (familiar) refrain or just listen and reflect.Communion Song -Fred Hammond & RFC (here)SENDING----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------We do not worship for ourselves alone, but for the sake of the world. God gathers us, speaks to us, and feeds us so that we might be formed into people who look and act like Jesus in our everyday lives.Closing PrayerONE: Let us never grow weary of doing what is right!ALL: We will go to seek justice for all of God’s children.ONE: Let us not grow weary of leading others to the kingdom!ALL: We will go to follow Jesus’ example of gathering all into grace.ONE: Let us not grow weary of speaking of hope and peace.ALL: We will go to sow the Spirit’s seed of life and hope.(inspired by Galatians 6 and Luke 10)SING!! one of the songs below or any song that gives God thanks and invites us to proclaim the Good News to the world:Surrounded (Fight My Battles) -Michael W. READING FROM THE HEBREW BIBLE 2 KINGS 5:1-15B L: Our first reading is from the second book of Kings, and is read responsively. L: There was a man named Naaman, who was a commander of the army of the king of Syria. He was a powerful man and in high favor with his king. Naaman, though a mighty warrior, suffered fromleprosy - his skin diseased and white as snow. Now the Syrians on one of their raids had taken a young girl from the land of Israel, and given her to Naaman’s wife as a slave-girl. She said to her mistress, All: “If only my lord were with the Israelite prophet, who lives in the land of Samaria! Surely he would cure my lord of hisleprosy.” L: (This was Elisha the prophet.) So Naaman went in and told his king exactly what the girl from the land of Israel had said. And the king of Aram said, “Go then.” So Naaman went to Israel with his horses and chariots laden with gifts. He stopped at the gate to Elisha’s house. Elisha sent a servant out to him to say: All: “Go, wash in the Jordan seven times, and your skin shall be restored and you shall be clean.” L: But Naaman became angry and stormed off, saying, “I thought that for me he would surely come outside, and stand and call on the name of the Lord his God, and would wave his hand over the spot, and cure the leprosy! There are two rivers in my home countrybetter than all the waters of Israel. Could I not wash in them, and be clean?” He turned and went away in a rage. But his slaves said to him, All: “Sir, if the prophet had commanded you to do something difficult, would you not have done it? How much more should you do it, when all he said to you was, ‘Wash, and be clean’?” L: So Naaman went down and washed himself seven times in the Jordan River, according to the word of the man of God; his skin was restored like the skin of a young man, and he was clean. Then he returned to the man of God, Naaman and everyone with him; he came and stood before Elisha and said, All: “Now I know that there is no God in all the earth except the God of Israel.” L: This is the word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God. ✠ THE GOOD NEWS LUKE 17:11-19L: The good news of Jesus Christ, according to the gospel of Luke, the seventeenth chapter.A: Glory to you, O Lord. L: On his way to Jerusalem, Jesus traveled through the region between Samaria and Galilee. As he entered a village along the way, ten lepers approached him. They kept their distance, as required inreligious law, and from far away they called out: All: “Jesus, Teacher, have mercy on us!” L: When Jesus saw them, he said, “Go and show yourselves to the priests.” And as they did, they were made clean. Then one of them, when he saw that he was healed, turned back, praising God with a loud voice. He threw himself at Jesus’ feet and thanked him. This man was a Samaritan. Then Jesus asked, “Were not ten made clean? But the other nine, where are they? Was none of them found to return and give praise to God except this foreigner?” Then he said to him, “Rise up and be on your way; your faith has made you whole.” L: This is the gospel, the good news of God’s grace.A: Praise to you, O Christ.

HEBREW BIBLE EXODUS 3:1-15 Leader:  The first reading is from the book of Exodus, and is read responsively.Moses was keeping the flock of his father-in-law Jethro; he led the flock through the desert, and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. There the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire, out of a bush; he looked, and the bush was blazing, but it was not consumed by the fire. Then Moses said, All:  “I will stop to look at this, and find out why the bush has not burned up.” When the Lord saw that he had turned aside, God called to him out of the bush, “Moses, Moses!” And he said, All:  “Here I am.” Then God said, “Come no closer! Remove the sandals from your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.” Then God said, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God.Then the Lord said, “I have seen the misery of my people who are slaves in Egypt; I have heard their cry under the cruelty of their masters. I know their sufferings, and I have come down to deliver them from the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land to a good and wide land, a land flowing with milk and honey. The cry of the Israelites has now come to me; I have seen how the Egyptians oppress them. So come, I will send you to Pharaoh to bring my people, the Israelites, out of Egypt.” But Moses said to God, All:  “Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh, and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?” God said, “I will be with you; and this shall be the sign for you that it is I who sent you: when you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall worship God on this very mountain.” But Moses said to God, All: “If I come to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your ancestors has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is God’s name?’ what shall I say to them?”  God said to Moses, “I am who I am.” God added, “Thus you shall say to the Israelites, ‘I am has sent me to you. The Lord, the God of your ancestors, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you’. This is my name forever, and this my title for all generations.”Leader: The Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God.✠ THE GOOD NEWS Luke 15:1-3, 11b-32 Leader:  The good news of Jesus Christ, according to the gospel of Luke, the fifteenth chapter. All:  Glory to you, O Lord. Now all the tax collectors and sinners were coming near to listen to him. And the Pharisees and the scribes were grumbling and saying, “This fellow welcomes sinners and eats with them.”So he told them this parable: “There was a man who had two sons. The younger son said to his father, ‘Father, give me the share of the property that will be mine when you die.’ And the father did so. A few days later, the younger son gathered all he had and traveled to a distant country, and there he squandered all he had in extravagant living. When he had spent everything, a severe famine took place throughout that country, and the son found himself in need of food and money. So he went and hired himself out to one of the citizens of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed the pigs. He longed for even a scrap of the food the pigs had, but no one gave him anything. He came to his senses and said, ‘How many of my father’s hired hands have more than enough to eat, and here I am dying of hunger! I will get up and go to my father, and I will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son; treat me like one of your hired hands.”’ So he set off and went to his father. But while he was still far off, his father saw him, and was filled with compassion; he ran to him, hugged him, and kissed his face. Then the son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick, bring out a robe—the best one—and put it on him! Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. Get the fatted calf and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate; for this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found!’ And they began to celebrate. Now his elder son was in the field; and when he came towards the house, he heard music and dancing. He called one of the servants and asked what was going on. He replied, ‘Your brother has returned, and your father has killed the fatted calf, because he has got his son back safe and sound.’ Then the older was furious and refused to go inside. His father came out and begged him, but he answered, ‘Listen! For all these years I have been working like a slave for you, and I have never disobeyed your command; yet you have never given me even a young goat to kill and eat with my friends. But when this son of yours came back, who has devoured your property with extravagance, you killed the fatted calf for him!’ Then the father said to him, ‘Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours. But we had to celebrate and rejoice, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and has been found.’”SERMON Pastor EmmyA CELEBRATION OF MEN OF HEART Leader:  On this day when fathers and men are uplifted and celebrated, we join our voices both with those who grieve and those who rejoice, remembering the many fathers of faith who came before us.Leader:  We remember every man who held his newborn child and found it to be the greatest gift and the hardest task of all. We celebrate with you. All:  May the God who bears new life in us inspire love in you.Leader:  We remember fathers who, like Jarius the synagogue leader, have sat beside the beds of children who were sick, and cried out to God on their behalf. We pray alongside you. All:  May the God who fathers each of us be a source of life for you.Leader: We remember men who have sought to become fathers and yet, through many life circumstances, find themselves without children to care for. May you, like the Jewish leader Mordecai and the Ethiopian eunuch, find that in your faithfulness to God you bear children of hope to the whole world. All:  May the God who fathers each of us be a source of life for you.Leader: We grieve alongside men who, like David and Job, have buried their own children, and alongside men who, like Jacob, have lost their wives well before it seemed fair. We mourn with you. All:  May the God who fathers each of us be a source of life for you.Leader: We remember children who face this day, whether for the first time or for the fiftieth time, without a beloved father. May you, like Joseph son of Jacob, know with confidence that your father’s life is honored and his legacies remembered. We mourn with you. All:  May the God who fathers each of us be a source of life for you.Leader:  We remember those who face this day in pain from fathers who did not celebrate and uplift the image of God in their children. We celebrate those who, like Esau the brother of Jacob and Joseph Jacob’s son, refuse to continue the cycle of manipulation and abuse, but instead choose to step into reconciliation and healing. We celebrate with you. All:  May the God who bears new life in us inspire love in you.Leader: We remember and give thanks for men who, like Joseph the father of Jesus, have made a family through adoption and stepfatherhood. We celebrate with you. All:  May the God who bears new life in us inspire love in you.Leader: We remember all those who have found freedom and new life in the difficult process of divorce. We celebrate with you. All:  May the God who bears new life in us inspire love in you.Leader: We remember King David and the poets and prophets, who in their mourning and in their celebrating were unafraid to show the fullness of emotion. We celebrate with you. All:  May the God who bears new life in us inspire love in you.Leader: We lift up all your children, O God, who have reflected, in ways large and small, your overwhelming compassion. Wherever we may be this day, in grief or joy, may we find ourselves turned towards You, whom Jesus spoke of as a wastefully extravagant father, lavishing us with joy and peace. All: Amen.

HEBREW BIBLE Joel 2:21-29Leader: The Hebrew Bible reading is from the book of Joel and is read responsively. Leader: The prophet Joel spoke:Do not fear, O earth and soil; be glad and rejoice, for the Lord has done great things!Do not fear, you cattle of the field and farm, for the pastures of the wilderness are green; All: the fig tree bears fruit, the vineyards produce more than ever.O children of Zion, be glad and rejoice in the Lord your God. Leader: For God has poured down for you abundant rain, both early and late rains, just as done in days of old.Your threshing floors shall be full of grain, the barrels shall overflow with wine and oil. All: We shall eat in plenty and be satisfied, and praise the name of the Lord our God,who has dealt wondrously with us. Leader: My people, God says, shall never again be put to shame. You shall know that I am in the midst of Israel, and that I, the Lord, am your God and there is no other. All: And we your people shall never again be put to shame. Leader: Then afterward I will pour out my spirit on all flesh;your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions.Even on the male and female slaves, in those days, I will pour out my spirit. Leader: The word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God. THE GOOD NEWS Acts 2:1-21, 32-42Leader: The good news of God’s work in the world, according to the Acts of the Apostles, the second chapter. All: Glory to you, O Lord. When the day of Pentecost had come, it was fifty days after the celebration of Passover and the raising of Jesus from the dead. The disciples were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of an overpowering wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Tongues of fire appeared among them, and a flame rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them the power to do. At this time there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. At the sound of the wind and the languages, the crowd gathered in shock; each one heard the disciples speaking in their own language. Amazed and astonished, they asked, All: Aren’t these people speaking all from Galilee? How is it that each of us hear them in language we can understand? We come from every corner of the earth, and yet in our own language we hear how they proclaim God’s deeds of power.” Leader: Everyone gathered was amazed and perplexed, asking each other, “What does this mean?” But others sneered and said, “They are just filled with new wine.” But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, “People of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. Indeed, we are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o’clock in the morning. No, this is what was spoken through the prophet Joel: ‘In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams.Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.’” Now when they heard this, the people were cut to the heart and said to Peter and to the other apostles, All: “What should we do?” Leader: Peter said to them, “Turn away from everything you have done wrong, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ, so that your sins may be forgiven; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. God’s promise is for you, for your children, and for all who are far away, everyone to whom the Lord our God calls.” So those who welcomed his message were baptized, and that day about three thousand people were added to the family of believers. They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. Leader: This is the good news of God’s work in the world. All: Praise to you, O Christ.
