Yes, it's the “March Madness” edition of “A Republic, If You Can Keep It”. This year, the orgy of college basketball is joined by the madness that is Tucker Carlson and Fox News, along with the incredible productivity of the Michigan's new legislative majority in Lansing. That new Democratic majority is moving major legislation at a record-setting pace. Several huge bills have cleared the Legislature in the last few days. Among them: a nearly one-billion-dollar tax cut, mandatory background checks for all gun purchases, an expansion of the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act providing basic protections for LGBTQ+ Michiganders, and a $630-million incentive package for the Ford battery plant in Marshall. Other bills moving quickly through the legislature repeal the Snyder-era attacks on unions, repeal Michigan's 1931 abortion law and enact new gun safety laws. Joining the podcast this week: longtime Republican activist Saul Anuzis. Anuzis served as Chairman of the Michigan Republican Party from 2005-2009 and was a candidate for Chairman of the Republican National Committee in 2009 and 2011. Previous positions included working with Newt Gingrich at American Solutions, Jack Kemp's 1988 Presidential campaign, Chief of Staff to MI Senate Majority Leader Dick Posthumus, Chairman of the MI Senate Republican Campaign Committee and serving on the MI House Republican Campaign Committee and most recently as a Senior Advisor to the Ted Cruz for President Campaign in the 2016 cycle. Today, Anuzis is one of the leaders in a bipartisan effort to reform the presidential election process. The United States is the only democracy in the world that makes it possible to finish second in an election… and still win. Two of the last four Presidents lost the popular vote but were elected thanks to the Electoral College. The National Popular Vote initiative would end that giant-sized quirk in our elections. =========================== This week's podcast is underwritten in part by EPIC-MRAEPIC ▪ MRA is a full service survey research firm with expertise in: • Public Opinion Surveys • Market Research Studies • Live Telephone Surveys • On-Line and Automated Surveys • Focus Group Research • Bond Proposals - Millage Campaigns • Political Campaigns & Consulting • Ballot Proposals - Issue Advocacy Research • Community - Media Relations • Issue - Image Management • Database Development & List Management =========================== Links to Stories We're Following This Week House votes to expand background checks on gun sales - Detroit Free Press Gun reform proposals receive first hearing in Michigan Legislature - WILX TV Michigan voters support lifetime firearms ban for some crimes, poll says - Detroit News Michigan Safety Survey Report - Glengariff Group MSU shooting victim's mom testifies for gun safety laws - Bridge Michigan Democrats mobilize on gun safety bills after flipping state legislatures, governor's offices - The Washington Post Democrats push Michigan gun reforms. With approximately 6,000 remaining non-domesticated buffalo relations, a severe tragedy occurred on December 29th, 2022, when a semi-truck, on HWY 191 in West Yellowstone, Montana, took the lives of 13 bison and yearlings. Despite the legal speed limit on HWY 191, the semi-truck was traveling too fast to stop in time before colliding into the buffalo family. For years, Montana has refused to lower the speed limit in accordance with scientific recommendations and the Buffalo Field Campaign, Native American nations and allies are calling for the construction of ecological corridors over the highway as a remedy to prevent future accidents and the taking of animal relations lives. Had there been an ecological corridor over the highway near the Madison River crossing to Horse Butte, Montana, - a popular migratory pattern of the buffalo – the accident could have been prevented. In addition to this recent tragedy, hunters throughout the state of Montana in the past have escalated the taking of non-domesticated buffalo relations lives. In other words, more buffalo relations lives were taken in 2022 than in 2021. Guest: Our guest, Tom Woodbury, Communications Director of the Buffalo Field Campaign joins us for the hour in this two-part interview and provides listeners with update on the work of the Buffalo Field Campaign, the recent tragedy, the call to action of for creating an ecological corridor over HWY 191, the Buffalo Treaty between Native American nations, and more. It was only a matter of time before The Money with Katie Show tackled the Goopification of wellness (even “wellness” seems like a term that's been co-opted in the last decade). In the US, this industry is worth $212 billion—and growing 11% annually. People be spendin' some money. What if commercialized self-care is really just a millennial pink Band-aid for the problems endemic to our hyperspeed lives? Are we trapped in a cycle of deadlines and bath bombs and existential dread? (Just me?) This week's episode explores the commodified self-care industrial complex and how it's awfully reminiscent of other industries marketed specifically toward women, but with the purported benefit of being ~good for you~. This week's episode holds two complex truths simultaneously: That sometimes, the answer is working harder, and other times, the answer is policy, interdependence, and community. Sure, individual responsibility is important—but when we try to solve complex, collective problems with individual exceptionalism, we create a recipe wherein quality of life for all but a select few worsens over time. Our individual wealth accumulation and experience of personal finance do not exist in a vacuum—they exist within the context of the economic policy decisions and cultural norms of our time. You can work on your metaphoric swimming and freestyle upstream for as long as you've got the energy to do so, but the strength of the current is outside of your control. Usually, we talk about your swimming. Today, we're talking about the current. Plus, this episode features an interview with Rebecca Walker, activist and author of Women Talk Money (https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Women-Talk-Money/Rebecca-Walker/9781501154324). At Bloomberg Philanthropies, we are dedicated to “following the data” — and the data on gun violence could not be more compelling or urgent. Americans are 25 times more likely to be murdered with a gun than people in other developed countries. Every day, 96 Americans are killed by gun violence. And every year, approximately three million American children bear witness to gun violence. In 2014, in an effort to combat the National Rifle Association, Mayors Against Illegal Guns and Moms Demand Action joined forces to create Everytown for Gun Safety. Today, Everytown has more than 5 million supporters across America. In this episode, Katherine Oliver of Bloomberg Philanthropies speaks with John Feinblatt, President of Everytown. They discuss Everytown’s tireless work fighting gun violence, how they use data to inform change, the future of gun safety in America, and the national movement to end gun violence.

Purchase bookClint Bolick argues in his new book, written with Jeb Bush, that the three broad components of immigration reform—better immigration enforcement, a lawful pathway for future migrants, and the legalization of current unauthorized immigrants—must work together to produce a viable immigration policy. The 1986 Reagan amnesty failed because it was a partial reform that increased immigration enforcement but did not increase legal opportunities for lower skilled immigrants. The 2007 immigration reform bill failed to even pass the Senate for a similar reason—its guest worker visa program was eviscerated. Immigration reform must produce an easily enforceable law that allows the world’s best, brightest, and most industrious a chance to contribute to the American economy.
