According to World Population review this year in PA there are 504 open missing person cases and 320 unidentified. I was astonished at that staggering number because that seems steep right? But the rate is only 3.9 per 100K which seems lower. According to NamUs most cases are resolved and the percentage that aren't is under 1%. The people that are found were either lost, made the conscious decision to leave, or were taken. The case we are covering today is over 20 years old. Police were never able to locate her living or dead. No one has heard a word from her since June 24th, 2002. Unfortunately, Sabrina Mae Kahler is part of that 1%.

Abbot Kahler's new book Eden Undone details the story of a group of European exiles who try to build a community on a remote island - but the true story is stranger than fiction. In the 1930s, a German couple opted to leave Europe and flee to the Galápagos Islands to live a simple life away from the chaos of civilization - and found themselves building a new society with two smaller groups of people. Kahler says she was drawn in by the true crime documents that showcased mysterious disappearances, dead bodies and different stories - and she wanted to explore it further. "It was the most bizarre headline I'd ever read in my life...and I was intrigued. I did more digging and uncovered this really incredible story." Abbott Kahler discusses Eden Undone: A True Story of Sex, Murder, and Utopia at the Dawn of World War II (Crown, Sept. 24). Kirkus calls this standout narrative nonfiction, set on a small Galapagos island, “a spirited page-turner.” Then Kirkus' editors share their top picks in books for the week.
Matt Crawford speaks with author Abbott Kahler about her book, Eden Undone: A True Story of Sex, Murder, and Utopia at the Dawn of World War II. At the height of the Great Depression, Los Angeles oil mogul George Allan Hancock and his crew of Smithsonian scientists came upon a gruesome scene: two bodies, mummified by the searing heat, on the shore of a remote Galápagos island. For the past four years Hancock and other American elites had traveled the South Seas to collect specimens for scientific research. On one trip to the Galápagos, Hancock was surprised to discover an equally exotic group of humans: European exiles who had fled political and economic unrest, hoping to create a utopian paradise. One was so devoted to a life of isolation that he'd had his teeth extracted and replaced with a set of steel dentures. As Hancock and his fellow American explorers would witness, paradise had turned into chaos. The three sets of exiles—a Berlin doctor and his lover, a traumatized World War I veteran and his young family, and an Austrian baroness with two adoring paramours—were riven by conflict. Petty slights led to angry confrontations. The baroness, wielding a riding crop and pearl-handled revolver, staged physical fights between her two lovers and unabashedly seduced American tourists. The conclusion was deadly: with two exiles missing and two others dead, the survivors hurled accusations of murder. Using never-before-published archives, Abbott Kahler weaves a chilling, stranger-than-fiction tale worthy of Agatha Christie. Set against the backdrop of the Great Depression and the march to World War II, with a mystery as alluring and curious as the Galápagos itself, Eden Undone explores the universal and timeless desire to seek utopia—and lays bare the human fallibility that, inevitably, renders such a quest doomed.
At the height of the Great Depression, an oil mogul from LA decided to escape society with his mistress to create their own utopia on a faraway land. The problems started with other people following them there. My friend, Abbott Kahler, is my guest today. She used to write under the name: Karen Abbott. Abbott tells me the story at the center of her book: Eden Undone A True Story of Sex, Murder, and Utopia at the Dawn of World War II. You may remember Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila sacking quarterbacks at will with the Green Bay Packers at the turn of the century. His get-off speed was rare. Only Clay Matthews has sacked the quarterback more as a Packer. He was a player who loved chatting up teammates, coaches and media members alike about faith. A lot. That's not uncommon.Everything that happened from about 2019 on? Well, that has raised eyebrows. There's a good chance you stopped everything you were doing to read Kalyn Kahler's compelling series at Sports Illustrated, “Pray for Kabeer.” The story of KGB's life took a dark turn in the public eye when he sent two friends to his children's school with guns. The 12th Annual Harrisburg Book Festival will take place at the Midtown Scholar Bookstore from Oct 9-13. The book fest promotes reading and community. Alex Brubaker is the Program Director of the Midtown Scholar Bookstore and Executive Director of the Harrisburg Book Festival. Midtown Scholar is an independent bookstore, something Brubaker is proud to be a part of. “We're in charge of our own community events. We get to decide what gets put on those shelves, and we have more intimate interaction with our customers. We get to know our customers a little bit better than maybe a large box, big box store might, or an online retailer might. So, we get to host our author events, we get to curate the books, and we get to have that sense of curation that perhaps a corporate bookstore might not, “said Brubaker. The festival will offer an outdoor tent sale offering discounts on over 30,000 books, 25 high profile authors, and a Children's Day. Abbott Kahler, Author of Eden Undone: An Afternoon with Abbot Kahler, will be among the visiting authors. “One of the great pleasures about being an author is that after years of isolation and research in the archives and connecting with your long dead characters, in my case, you get to go out and talk to live people who are interested in the story, who want to ask you questions. You know, especially a really strange story like this. I've been hearing from a lot of people who've been to the Galapagos Islands and are really interested more in this dark slice of history from that unique place, “said Kahler. Laura Kahler is the director of the South Dakota Grasslands Initiative (SDGI), pushing South Dakotan agriculture toward sustainability and heightened reverence for the natural landscape. Laura's mission is to provide resources and support to landowners, helping them keep their pasture lands not just profitable, but also sustainable and ecologically sound. The SDGI aims to manage grasslands effectively while balancing profitability and environmental conservation. Grasslands are more than just land; they are ecosystems that require attentive, informed management to thrive. Laura emphasizes that the initiative is more than a conservation effort; it's a collaborative platform where hunters, ranchers, conservation groups, and others converge to share perspectives and solutions.A key aspect of SDGI's approach is the integration of local knowledge with scientific research. Farmers and landowners bring generations of experience, while scientific insights offer new perspectives on soil health and ecosystem management. This blend of knowledge is crucial for developing effective, sustainable land management strategies.Education forms the backbone of the SDGI. By educating landowners and the public about the importance of soil health and sustainable practices, the initiative aims to create a ripple effect, one that spreads awareness and action across communities. This educational component is vital in cultivating a shared understanding and commitment to land stewardship. At its heart, the success of the SDGI hinges on collaboration. By bringing together diverse groups, each with their own perspectives and interests, the initiative fosters a sense of community and shared purpose. This collaborative spirit is essential for addressing complex environmental challenges. The real-world impact of the SDGI and regenerative practices is profound. Farmers report healthier soils, increased biodiversity, and improved yields. Environmentally, these practices contribute to carbon sequestration, water retention, and habitat preservation - essential components in the fight against climate change.Looking ahead, Kahler intends to continue expanding the initiative, deepening the understanding of regenerative practices, and fostering a community where every stakeholder has a voice in shaping the future of our grasslands. The South Dakota Grasslands Initiative stands as a testament to what can be achieved through collaboration and a deep commitment to our planet. Regenerative practices and collaborative effort not only impact today's soils, but have ripple effects into plant, animal and human life for years to come.Links:SD Grasslands Initiative Homepage: https://sdgrassinitiative.org/SDGI Summit and Introduction Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ikpzs8sA4xUNew Feature Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gAoqp0cYwPc

EPISODE 1927: In this KEEN ON show, Andrew talks to Abbot Kahler, author of WHERE YOU END, about writing unnerving literature for unnerving timesAbbott Kahler (formerly Karen Abbott) is the author of four New York Times bestselling works of narrative nonfiction. A search for an ancestor who went missing in 1905 led her to write Sin in the Second City, which tells the true story of two sisters who ran the world's most famous brothel and the nationwide battle to shut them down. Her interest in Gypsy Rose Lee, the subject of American Rose, stems from stories her grandmother shared about the ecdysiast's performances in the 1930s and 40s. Liar Temptress Soldier Spy was inspired by a six-year stint in Atlanta, where the ghosts of the Civil War still seem omnipresent. The HBO show Boardwalk Empire introduced her to bootlegger George Remus, the subject of The Ghosts of Eden Park and a character much more fascinating than Al Capone. Then Came the Devil, her next nonfiction book, is by far the most outrageous story she's ever encountered. Her debut novel, Where You End, is inspired by a true story of identical twins and amnesia, and will be out next January. USA Today once named her “a pioneer of sizzle history.” Abbott's books have featured as Indie Next picks, Amazon's best books of the year, Library Journal's best books of the year, and Smithsonian Magazine's best history books of the year. She has also been a finalist for the Edgar Award for Best Fact Crime, the Goodreads book award for history, and the Ohioana Book Awards, the second oldest state literary prize in the country. She has written for newyorker.com, New York Magazine, the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post, Smithsonian Magazine, and other publications, and has appeared on the History Channel, CBS Sunday Morning, AMC's "Making of the Mob,” the Discovery Channel, and other media outlets. Her books have been optioned for television and film, and her podcast about George Remus, REMUS: THE MAD BOOTLEG KING, is forthcoming from iHeartRadio. bAbbott is a native of Philadelphia, where she spent six years as a journalist, covering crime, advocating for abused women, and hanging out with mafia bosses and baseball wives. She lives in New York City and in Greenport, New York, where she's convinced her little bungalow is haunted. She appreciates a good poker hand, an old bottle of wine, and the never-ending hunt for new stories to tell. Read the strange story behind her name change here. You can follow her on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, or sign up for her (monthly or so) Wicked History newsletter.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. Chasing Tone - Guitar Podcast About Gear, Effects, Amps and Tone
Brian and Richard are joined by infamous Youtube creator KDH for a special episode of the Chasing Tone Podcast!Brian invited Youtube creator and fellow gear nerd KDH onto the show and both he and Richard are astonished by how young he is - and by extension how old they are. He tells us about his earliest memories and the early inspirations that got him into playing, nerding out over gear, and making Youtube content. He tells us about his band Walker and his 1980's Hard Rock influences which is music to Brian's ears. Richard apologizes in advance for any cultural reference point based crimes that Brian may be about to commit before jumping into what influenced KDH to form a particular investigative style.Richard is suffering from the Covid and also manages to completely misjudge everything. The conversation turns into an interesting look at an angle that the guys have never really looked at before and it makes Richard challenge his own views and mentally implode. We touch on some of the infamous controversial videos that KDH has published and learn some disturbing facts as we gaze into the abyss that is the guitar industry as it gazes back at us. Brian is intrigued by KDH's video production methodology and asks about how he comes up with new content while also finding ways to keep it interesting as Richard fires off back handed compliments and generally misinformed nonsense. The guys look at the pedal industry, some of the business practices therein, and the ethics of cloning versus completely copying pedals. It's also the final episode for 2023 so we would like to wish you all a fantastic New Year! This Champaign girl has moved around a bit in search of a feeling of family and stability. She's finally found a good foundation of friends and job security just 45 minutes away in Bloomington. A few decades earlier we lived together in that same town for a few wild and eventful years. Listen to Natalie and I catch up after decades of not speaking to each other. A dysfunctional senior year in college lead to the demise of our friendship. Years, space, reflection and the podcast led to a reunion. Motherhood is a great common denominator and an excellent place to start over. Natalie talks about escaping a dead-end relationship with the father of her daughter. She had the strength and foresight to remove him from their lives before a bad relationship turned worse. Worried she would never have a maternal bond to this little human, she quickly learned that maternal instincts can kick in when they are needed the most. In just a short time after sending the dad packing, her decision was solidified when he died from alcoholism's collateral damage. Now she appreciates quiet nights at home crocheting over dating and crowded bars. Raising a tween girl is providing all the drama she can handle! So glad to reconnect with someone who is a part of more core memories than I can count. Her spicy spirit, easy laugh and tell-it-like-it-is personality reminded me of all of the good times while fading away the bad. Happy to call her a friend again. Thank you so much for listening!
