“The state of mind is more important than your body being prepared. When you compete, your body will not always be 100%, but your state of mind has to be super ready.” –André Galvão My Guest this episode is Prof. André Galvão who is a legendary Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Grappler and a professional mixed martial artist. He holds 4th Degree Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Blackbelt and is also a Judo Black Belt. He is one of the most decorated grapplers in history, winning 6 x ADCC and 6 X IBJJF World Championships. Prof. Galvão is the co-founder of Atos Jiu Jitsu in San Diego California and was inducted into both the IBJJF and ADCC Hall of Fame. This episode is filled championship wisdom. We discuss what it takes to become a world champion, diving deep into training methods and how to cultivate a competitive mindset. My key takeaway is that Balance is the key to performance. You have to find balance in your training and in your life. You have to be honest about your strengths and weaknesses and put the time and effort with the correct plan to develop to your full potential. The journey is different for everyone and our ability to find Joy on and off the matts is extremely important to achieve Balance and avoid burnout. Tune in for an insightful conversation with a world champion.

Jordan Rabé trains at Autore Jiu-Jitsu and received his purple belt from André Galvão before moving to Los Angles. Jordan recently took third place at Masters Worlds in the Flyweight division. Jordan started wrestling in high school because he saw it was the best thing to translate into MMA. After high school, Jordan would go to college and wrestle for a short time before finding BJJ. As a white belt, Jordan admits that he had the typical wrestling midset of 110% in practice. After a couple of months of training, Jordan competed in his first competition has been steadily competing ever since. When Jordan first started competing, he admits he would try to find any reason not to compete. He would get into his head and cast a shadow over his potential. After years of working on his mental health through yoga, marijuana, and being more spiritual, he became more confident in his abilities. Jordan is a very relaxed and down-to-earth person, but you couldn't tell if all you saw was his highlight reels on social media. The explosiveness he gained from wrestling is visible in how he moves, attacks, and counters his opponents. Jordan gives excellent advice on competing, cutting weight, if you should or should not cut weight, mindset, perspective on his role as a purple belt, and much more. Jordan's whole persona drives home his advice to white belts of "have fun." If you aren't having fun, then why do the gentle art? This week we're joined by Matt Skaff! Matt is a 10th Planet black belt who specializes in the anaconda choke. The anaconda is powerful because it's not just a choke: it's a powerful positional system with a lot of submission options.Matt's key advice for the anaconda:Don't squeeze too early!Don't go deep too early: you don't want them to control your elbow.Use your lat for power: pinch your elbows to your core.Grab your tricep, not your bicep. Internally rotate your thumb down. Before you gator roll, pull them back and sprawl at 45°.Listen to Matt's Skaff on The Grappling Discourse:https://anchor.fm/matt-skaffVideos referenced in this episode:Rafael Mendes vs. André Galvãohttps://youtu.be/7-F9PksNNIoRafael Mendes anaconda chokehttps://youtu.be/Nw2xfELw4wcMental models discussed in this episode:Single vs. Double Lever Controlhttps://bjjmentalmodels.com/single-vs-double-lever-control/Committed Techniqueshttps://bjjmentalmodels.com/committed-techniques/Position Over Submissionhttps://bjjmentalmodels.com/position-over-submission/Predictable Responseshttps://bjjmentalmodels.com/predictable-responses/Technique Chaininghttps://bjjmentalmodels.com/technique-chaining/Kinetic Chainshttps://bjjmentalmodels.com/kinetic-chains/3 Joint Rulehttps://bjjmentalmodels.com/3-joint-rule/Myopiahttps://bjjmentalmodels.com/myopia/Overwhelming Forcehttps://bjjmentalmodels.com/overwhelming-force/Don't forget to check out BJJ Mental Models Premium! If you love the podcast, you'll definitely love our premium membership offerings.
Michael is a second degree Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt under André Galvão, of the elite Atos academy, Michael is widely recognized as one of the most talented competitors of his generation. Michael started making waves in jiu-jitsu's competitive scene early on, winning his first world title as a blue belt in 2011, he followed his early success winning 2 more “Mundial” gold medals at purple and brown belt, and his victories are far too extensive to read on and on about. In October 2019, Michael moved to Colorado where he founded his own academy alongside fellow Atos teammate, YJ Lee, and they named it Lōgōs Jiu-Jitsu Academy. I'm gonna be honest this was one of my favorite episodes, there are so many great takeaways I got from it, and I get the sense that you will as well. It became immediately clear that Michael is a highly intelligent, self aware, and present individual. These characteristics manifest themselves in very interesting ways, one of which is that Michael has a very high fight IQ. Not only is he aware of what and how he needs to train and iterate, but he also has earnest respect and reverence for his competition. I feel lucky to have engaged with Michael in a very interesting transitional period in his life, going from single focused competitor to an academy owner/leader role where responsibilities and priorities can vary greatly. Michael is refreshingly calm, candid, and laid back with me and more importantly himself. An important highlight I'd like to make which could get lost is the importance of his father Michael Liera Senior (also a black belt), they seemed to have a very special connection in that Michael Senior exposed Jr to various interests (a lot more than many others have done) only to finally land on BJJ. This type of special mentorship is the foundation of Michaels's greatness thus far, I mean his other instructors were Saulo Ribeiro and Andre Galvao for goodness sake! Some housekeeping notes, in the episode Michael makes several references to "HQ", which refers to ATOS headquarters in Southern California. Letsos is a 3X Pan Am medalist, as well as a 3X Gracie World Champion. Letsos began training in Jiu Jitsu in high school at the Carlson Gracie Academy in downtown Chicago, and won several matches in the Jiu Jitsu World Championships as a purple belt. In 2002 after several years training with the Carlson Gracie academy in Chicago. The 3 week journey that Letsos intended to have ended up being prolonged and before he knew it, 4 years had passed in which Letsos trained amongst some of the best competitors of the 1990’s and 2000’s, including the famous Gracie Barra team with whom he trained and competed for. Pete The Greek’s guard passing game was well respected, this allowed him a spot at the Gracie Barra Team, at the Brazilian National Teams tournament when he was a purple belt (2002). He then lived and train Jiu Jitsu in Brazil for four years, spending many hours on the mat with Osvaldo Alves and Carlson Gracie. Letsos has trained alongside many of the world's best Jiu Jitsu fighters and mixed martial artists, such as Fredson Paixao, André Galvão, Tony DeSouza, and Miguel Torres. He is friends with Eddie Bravo, Kenny Florian, Jeff Glover, and BJ Penn. Letsos lived and trained with Penn at his mixed martial arts academy in Hilo, Hawaii, where he eventually suffered a devastating injury to his neck while surfing. Since then, Letsos' emphasis has been on training students in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at his gym, Rio Jiu Jitsu Academy, in Chicago's Irving Park neighborhood and traveling and giving Seninars around the World.

Fala, galera!
--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/pimentapodcast/message
Today I have had the great pleasure of being able to sit down to speak with the amazing Heather Raftery! Heather is a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belt under André Galvão, and trains out of Tucson, Arizona USA. In this episode we discuss a lot of different topics, from her childhood of ‘cutting’ horses with her father and competing at cutting horse competitions, to training at the highest levels at Atos in San Diego. Again, if there’s someone you think I should reach out to, or if there’s any issues you’re experiencing with this revised format, please don’t hesitate to get in contact with me. And as always, much love to you all! x ❤️ x
