In this episode, I talk to comedian JONATHAN BOULTON about his comedy career. I have known British comedian Jonathan Boulton for years.  I first worked for him in 2010.  One day in 2013, he told me he had applied for a six-month comedy course at London's City Lit Academy.  He won the competition and not long after, he moved to Dubai and became a co-founder and regular comedian at Yalla Laughs Comedy Club in Abu Dhabi.  In 2021, he returned to London to continue his comic journey. I have seen Boulton many times live including Comedy Virgins at The Cavendish Arms in Stockwell, Angel Comedy at The Camden Head in Islington and six shows for We Love Comedy at The Pipeline, Liverpool Street all in London in 2013. Thank you so much for listening to my podcast, if you like what you hear, please subscribe and I hope you enjoy the interview. What is love (baby don't hurt me, don't hurt me know more). On this week's episode we speak to budding neuroscientist and co-host of 'Living Room Logic' Andrew McGovern and Loveryboy comedian Kevin O'Connel to find out what the neurochemical explanation is for love, what the dumbest thing we've done for love is, whether or not the friend zone exists and why I might need to convince my wife to go to couple's therapy for the perks. Expert guest:Andrew McGovern is a budding neuroscientist who firmly believes the future of medicine has sex in mind. Careful now you little minx, he studies sex differences in risk of diseases like Alzheimer's and in mental health. Currently a bioscience teacher in university, he loves sharing his passions with his students and, well, anyone who will listen. Last year Andrew won the audience price in the regional and all Ireland FameLab finals, Ireland's biggest science communication competition. He's also the host of the fantastic living room logic podcast which I highly recommend. Comedian guest:Since moving to London in 2016, Kevin has been making waves with his high energy performances and whimsical material. In 2019 he was featured on Union Jack Radio's "One Night Stand" and has been a finalist in the Bath Comedy Festival New Act of the Year 2017 and the prestigious NATYs (New Act of the Year) 2018. Kevin is an alumni of the Soho Youth Company and regularly gigs across the UK and Ireland. He regularly plays at venues such as the Comedy Store, Angel Comedy, The Poodle Club and The Stand. Kevin will soon be performing his solo show at the Camden Fringe Festival, keep an eye out on his Facebook and website for more details.

A couple of weeks ago, we got together to do Mystery on the Rocks in the same room for the first time in over a year and did a live show from Angel Comedy's brilliant venue The Bill Murray. Restrictions still prevented us having audience in the room with us and so we livestreamed a slightly chaotic show where we got super giddy at being together for the first time in a long time. During the shenanigans, we did touch upon the story of the terrifying ghost ship SS Ourang Medan, and thought why not edit together an episode from the live show? So we did!An eerie distress call from the doomed ship caused two vessels in what was the Dutch East Indies to investigate, whereupon they found the Ourang Medan's entire crew dead and, disturbingly, all in the same pose. But is it actually a horrifying true story or just an urban myth? The jury has remained out ever since the story first surfaced in the 1940s... And find out if there is anything cool dude Masud can't style out... See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

We discuss Barry’s creative projects and the time management involved in running them alongside Angel Comedy.Barry describes how he started stand up as a 17 year old and then took a 10 year sabbatical to write and perform in sketch comedy, with Chris Head. He explains that part of the reason he created Angel Comedy, was because he felt people wouldn’t want to hire him, so he built his own space where he could do what he liked; whilst also offering stage time to fellow comedians. We discuss what society deems as being creative and the idea of glorifying the tortured artist. The tension between being creative and wanting to be seen to be creative on social media. Barry explains that we’re not lazy at the things we enjoy and are good at, where as we’re lazy at the things we don’t enjoy. We also talk about whether the multi hyphenate approach is best, or just to focus on getting better at one thing at a time. Barry also emphasises the importance of learning how to network. We share our experiences of attending US short film festivals and Barry describes how friends and family crowd funded to cover his flight and accommodation to attend the LA Comedy Film Festival. In the US, it's apparent that people are finding ways to celebrate graduations despite them being cancelled due to COVID-19. And, around the world people are continuing to do random acts of kindness. It seems that almost two months into quarantine, people are still finding ways to get some good out of a bad situation. In addition to random acts of kindness and graduations, this week we hear more from Rose Cayetano and how her crocheting is helping people in need. And, this past week Captain Tom Moore celebrated his 100th birthday. Happy birthday and thank you for helping raise $39 million for the U.K.'s National Health Service. This week's artist spotlight is close to my heart: Angel Comedy. Angel Comedy is an institution at the heart of the UK comedy circuit run by comedians for comedians.
