Send us a textEvery TV Sitcom yo've ever loved has been touched by this man's genius! What does it take to shepherding some of the most beloved British comedy shows from idea to cultural phenomenon? Jon Plowman OBE—the executive producer behind The Office, Absolutely Fabulous, Vicar of Dibley, Inside No. 9, and countless other comedy classics—offers a rare glimpse into the creative chaos that birthed these iconic programs. From surviving a motorcycle accident that landed him in the hospital (with a parade of celebrities visiting his bedside) to the surreal experience of being interviewed for Oxford University by candlelight during a power outage, Plowman's journey through British television is as unexpected as it is enlightening. His revelation about arriving at a meeting with French and Saunders three weeks before filming to find their "script" consisted of merely four Post-it notes on a wall surrounded by celebrity magazines speaks volumes about the creative genius he helped nurture throughout his career. The most valuable lesson from Plowman's storied career might be his philosophy of "never shouting cut"—allowing the moments between scripted lines and official filming to capture spontaneous comedy gold. This approach led to some of the most memorable moments in shows like Absolutely Fabulous, where improvisation flourished in the spaces between what was written and what naturally emerged on set.Beyond the humorous anecdotes—including the delightfully absurd story of settling a dispute between David Walliams and Matt Lucas about the appropriate size of a certain stain on a jacket lapel during a Little Britain sketch—lies Plowman's profound insight into recognizing and cultivating comedy genius. Whether championing Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant's revolutionary mockumentary format for The Office or supporting Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton's anthology vision for Inside No. 9 against network pressures, Plowman's instinct for spotting innovation has shaped decades of entertainment.Ready to discover how the most iconic British comedy shows made it from concept to screen? #555 Welsh Freddie Mercury - Richard has found out the true lyrics of a 1990s pop classic and is going to tell you them in detail. His guests are internet satirists Larry and Paul. They talk about which one is which, the long genesis of their online sketch content, the BBC's reluctance to promote podcasts in 2008 or understand why radio shows needed video, why a Labour government (especially this one) does not mean the end of political satire, impressing Jeremy Vine and potentially insulting Matt Lucas and David Walliams, how Self Esteem being on a delayed train almost led to an embarrassing situation with Carol Vorderman, whether TV is a worthwhile ambition for people making their own content, is it a good idea to have children and Paul (or is it Larry) has come in with some of his own emergency questions, one of which is a little spicy.Support our Kickstarter here https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/467836598/can-i-have-my-ball-backFor Richard's remaining live stand up gigs http://richardherring.com/ballback/tourCome and see RHLSTP live http://richardherring.com/rhlstpFor Larry and Paul's videos https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCSrVr5o27krtcuNgjR5RgdwSUPPORT THE SHOW!Watch our TWITCH CHANNELSee extra content at our WEBSITE Become a member at https://plus.acast.com/s/rhlstp. Today, Danny is joined by Lizzy Roper, a comedian, actress, DJ, the face of Aunt Bessie´s and more. Her grandfather was a Londoner, but her father was born in Spain. When the civil war erupted, they became refugees. Lizzy was born and raised in Whetstone. Lizzy´s career has included numerous stage roles and parts in 63 movies and TV shows, including Hollyoaks and Waterloo Road. As well as a significant period doing stand up alongside Lenny Beige, Matt Lucas, Sasha Barron Cohen, David Walliams and more. She shares some interesting stories, including why she had to learn Middle English to get her equity card, a funny Pink Panther story and tales of an eclectic mix of celebrities, including Tom Baker, John Hurt, Barry Cryer, Leo Sayer and Robbie Williams. If you can´t get enough of these podcasts, head to https://www.patreon.com/DannyHurst to access my exclusive, member-only, fun-filled and fact-packed history-related videos. KEY TAKEAWAYS By the age of 5 Lizzy was already imitating entertainers she saw on TV. She was born to act. In the late 80s, early 90s, London was still affordable, even for struggling actors. London is really a series of little towns that are patched together. In the West End, wherever you look, history hits you in the face. Once you have lived outside of London for a while you forget that the city has its own behavioural norms. The Gielgud Theatre had two previous names. The Regency Rooms was known for its cabaret comedy, but a lot of big bands also played there. Acting in a soap opera requires a different skillset. The insights Lizzie shares about how they make 2.5 hours of TV in under a week are fascinating. BEST MOMENTS “If I go back up there, they tell me I sound like a Cockney t**t.” “It took me a while to get London.” “Do you remember that wonderful word “profit share” that translates to profit loss?” “My acting career took off by going through the back door of Cabaret comedy stand up.” “When I met you, you were running the asylum at the time.” “I know I can do a bit of stand-up, but I could not be a street performer.” “There´s something magical about Liverpool.” “Hollyoaks, it's more dangerous than a Mexican drug cartel.” “I haven´t got the London code anymore.” EPISODE RESOURCES https://www.imdb.com/name/nm1575301 https://www.curtisbrown.co.uk/client/lizzie-roper HOST BIO Historian, performer, and mentor Danny Hurst has been engaging audiences for many years, whether as a lecturer, stand-up comic or intervention teacher with young offenders and excluded secondary students. Matt Lucas, the president of Our Daily Bread, maintains that the organization has not shifted its doctrinal convictions, yet lists celebrating diversity as a historic, biblical Christian teaching alongside salvation in Christ alone and the infallibility of Scripture. I don't think anyone working for Our Daily Bread in 1938 would have said this. The fact is, Our Daily Bread has been trafficking in social justice teachings in the MeToo and BLM vein for a few years. Jon reviews some of these teachings so that Our Daily Bread readers can be informed and make up their own minds. To Support the Podcast: https://www.worldviewconversation.com/support/Become a Patronhttps://www.patreon.com/jonharrispodcastFollow Jon on Twitter: https://twitter.com/jonharris1989Follow Jon on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/jonharris1989/Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/conversations-that-matter8971/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Matt and Luke board the TV Time Machine for one final time in 1999 to review 4 not so festive treats from December. Firstly, Martin Clunes stars in an off-kilter comedy drama about the inner workings of a shock TV show entitled 'Sex And Death' Then, there's the only Christmassy-sounding show, in BBC One's sort of family drama Last Christmas starring Pauline Quirke and Ray Winstone. Then, the pair examine the evolution of Graham Norton by looking back at his first Christmas Show as part of So Graham Norton on Channel 4. Lastly, the barely known comedy duo Matt Lucas and David Walliams get their first shot at TV with UK Play's Rock Profile in which the pair play over-the-top versions of Pop stars such as George Michael, the lads from Steps and Michael Jackson and his ever-loyal friend Elizabeth Taylor. Also, Matt tests Luke's music knowledge for the final time with the Christmas Chart of December 99 where Cliff Richard's The Millennium Prayer is still hanging around!

Tread Merrily begins with the Doctor Who Christmas special "The Return of Doctor Mysterio." While investigating a potential alien invasion, The Doctor discovers a boy he met years earlier is using his accidental superpowers to become a real-life superhero. But "The Ghost" leads a complicated civilian life that is now intruding on his costumed one as the invasion, The Doctor, and the woman he secretly loves all join him for Christmas Eve Day. Will The Doctor foil the aliens? Will "The Ghost" unmask himself in front of the smart reporter he fancies? Will we remember the events of this episode in a year? Erik forgets to check his mic, leading to crackly audio throughout. Both he and Justin struggle to remember the plot and stay on task as the special is, to quote another Doctor Who showrunner, "standard." Erik vaguely recalls it ended a particular year without Doctor Who, but forgot Nardole is the companion. Justin notes the two emotional arcs of the story do not intersect. He also learns the 2025 Gallifrey One guest list. The Berlantiverse influence on the tale is obvious. The Child Compressor makes its annual Xmas pitch. Wavering Scottish accents occur. Justin defends the work of Matt Lucas. Dragonball Evolution gets remembered and Erik continues to develop his Doctor Who version of It's a Wonderful Life.
It's been 24 years since “Gladiator” took the world by storm and spawned a whole new era of swords and sandals movies. Will it's sequel “Gladiator II”, our movie for this week, do the same? We shall see. This time the main character is Lucius, who we met as a young boy in the original “Gladiator.” He's the son of Lucilla, and it's revealed in the trailers, the son of Maximus, Russell Crowe's character from “Gladiator.” Lucius suffers a tragedy early in the movie and is made a slave and then rises up as a gladiator for Macrinus, played by Denzel Washington. Macrinus is not all he appears to be and is proven to be power hungry and wants to use Lucius as his instrument for power. Another main character is General Acacius, played by Pedro Pascal, who is the leader of the Roman army who fight for Emperor Geta and Emperor Caracalla, played by Joseph Quinn and Fred Hechinger respectively. Acacius isn't exactly excited anymore to be dispatched like an errand boy by these emperors to kill people all over the world and conquer lands. Connie Nielsen returns to play Lucilla and as she sees a particular gladiator fight in the Colosseum, she starts to get a feeling that she knows this man. All of these worlds will collide. Sometimes sequels surpass the quality of the original. Does “Gladiator II” accomplish that feat? Check out this episode to find out! “Gladiator II” also stars Derek Jacobi, Yuval Gonen, Rory McCann, Peter Mensah, Matt Lucas, Tim McInnerny, Alexander Karim and Lior Raz. RETRO RHLSTP #74 - The Football Eagle Has Landed - Richard believes he will soon be a multi-millionaire but agrees to give 1/365th of this profits to charity. His guest is comedy legend Matt Lucas. They talk about the power of honesty in comedy, even if the comedian comes out of it badly, how Matt became possibly the only person who's rung up to complain about a TV show to end up working with the stars, the combination of talent, hard work and luck that is required for success, being in a Blur video by accident, dealing with tragedy and a considered look back at Little Britain and how it should or shouldn't be judged in hindsight. And the importance of talking about issues rather than shouting over the social media divide. Also Rich reveals his gay experimentation and considers changing teams.SUPPORT THE SHOW!Check out our website http://rhlstp.co.ukSee details of the RHLSTP tour dates http://richardherring.com/gigsBuy DVDs and Books at http://gofasterstripe.com Become a member at https://plus.acast.com/s/rhlstp. For this week's main podcast review, I am joined by Nadia Dalimonte & Josh Parham. Today, we are reviewing the latest film from director Paul King and screenwriter Simon Farnab, "Wonka," starring Timothée Chalamet, Calah Lane, Keegan-Michael Key, Paterson Joseph, Matt Lucas, Mathew Baynton, Sally Hawkins, Rowan Atkinson, Jim Carter, Tom Davis, Olivia Colman & Hugh Grant. What do we think of the story, Chalamet's performance as such a beloved character, how the film borrows elements from the 1971 film "Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory," the supporting cast, comedy, and tone of the film, its costume and production design, and more? Tune in as we discuss these elements, its awards season chances, and more in our review. Thank you, and enjoy! Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on... He's the star of the iconic Little Britain, Bridesmaids, Come Fly With Me and soon to be seen on the big screen in Wonka. This week we have the one and only Matt Lucas joining us for dinner. Matt has recently written his first children's book and with all his wonderful stories from growing up you can see where all the inspiration comes from! We discovered that he was given his first big break by Bob Mortimer, he's notorious for his very own Chicken Soup recipe (which takes him 36 hours!), his first flat deposit was paid for by a Creme Egg advert and the story of the real life 'Marjorie Dawes' from Weight Watchers is fabulous. Matt, next time you come round we promise to have a Viennetta on ice for you, but you've gotta bring the soup! Matt's children's musical novel ‘The Boy Who Slept Through Christmas' is out now. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
While most of us believe the universe began with a big bang, Brian and Robin hear some of the alternative theories, including an Egyptian myth that it actually started with a giant ejaculation, as they question the origins of life as we know it. With so much still to be discovered about the cosmos, Rufus Hound says we need more bangs and flashes in chemistry classes, arguing lessons aren't dangerous enough anymore. So could comedians play a role in advancing the science? Matt Lucas says he's happy to jump into a black hole when he learns there's high speed internet and Eric Idle gets poetic about the tiniest of particles in a special song about the Higgs Boson. Episodes featured: Series 10: Before the Big Bang Series 23: The Fundamentals of Reality Series 14: The Recipe to Build a Universe Series 22: Black Holes The Infinite Monkey Cage 100 Series 8: Glastonbury Special New episodes will be released on Wednesdays, but if you're in the UK, listen to new episodes, a week early, first on BBC Sounds: bbc.in/3K3JzyF Producer: Marijke Peters Executive Producer: Alexandra Feachem
