The Blues women made history last weekend by beating South Island franchise Matatu in the final at Eden Park to become the first back to back Super Rugby Aupiki champions. However, there is still one job to do for the Auckland based side, who host the Australian champion NSW Waratahs in tonight's inaugural trans-Tasman Super Rugby Women's final at North Harbour Stadium. Former Black Ferns forward Charmaine McMenamin spoke to Corin Dann.
Rugby YouTube star Riaan Louw joined Brett McKay & Harry Jones on The 8-9 Combo Rugby Podcast to ponder a very simple concept: what would you pinch from any other League in the rugby world to make your own league that much better? Whether it's the URC's graphic, the Top 14 budgets, Super Rugby's impatient referees, or League One running Japanese and English language websites and social media, there are plenty of things to envy from other comps around the world. And there are things to avoid too. English accounting, for one obvious example. Plus: the URC, the Premiership, and the Top 14 are all back this weekend, along with Super Rugby Pacific, League One in Japan and Major League Rugby, and for the first time in podcast history, Harry Jones knocks off early. Games of the Week: • SRP Round 9: Fijian Drua v NSW Waratahs, Lautoka • URC Round 15: Munster v Bulls, Limerick • Premiership Round 14: Bristol v Leicester, Ashton Gate • Top 14 Round 21: Lyon v Montpellier, Lyon • MLR Rd.10: San Diego Legion v Utah Warriors, San Diego #rugby #rugbypodcast #89Combo #SuperRugbyPacific #URC #Premiership #Top14 #JapanRugbyLeagueOne #MajorLeagueRugby #RiaanLouw #RugbyUpdate Find us: YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@8-9Combo?sub_confirmation=1 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/1BcKhb24YOtwQhKc0S3sDm Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/the-8-9-combo-rugby-podcast/id1729575866 Social media: #89Combo Twitter: https://twitter.com/89combo BlueSky: https://bsky.app/profile/89combo.bsky.social Find Brett and Harry on both Twitter and on BlueSky: @BMcSport + @HaribaldiJones Music: "Stalling" by Topher Mohr & Alex Elena (via YouTube Creator Studio) Voiceovers by Chookman + Sean Maloney Learn more about your ad choices. This week Nicola and Di chat with the wise and incredible Sally Loane. Sally has had a remarkable career from starting as a journalist in print media, moving into broadcasting with ABC radio, before jumping into the corporate world and establishing herself as a non-executive director on several boards - including being the first woman on the board at the NSW Waratahs in its 135 year history! She is currently the Chairman of Destination NSW and sits on the board for several charities and other organisations. She is such an inspiring woman, who has consistently reinvented herself and believes in stepping up courageously when new opportunities present themselves. In this conversation, we go right back to Sally’s childhood and what it was like growing up in Tenterfield, spending her mornings being homeschooled by mum, and her afternoons in the paddock with dad. She shares how her country upbringing taught her so much about resilience, which she would come to rely on later in life when she experienced great loss. We talk all about Sally’s early career in journalism, her time as a political reporter, the mentors she had along the way and how terrifying it was for her to make the switch from print to broadcasting and being live-on-air with the ABC. We also find out that Di was one of Sally’s loyal listeners from her days at the ABC and has been a bit of a fan girl ever since. We chat about Sally’s career transitions and reinventions and how she finds the confidence to keep taking on the next challenge. Sally is also passionate about women’s financial independence and so we talk about finance, why it has been a taboo topic in the past, and she shares some great tips for women to look after their financial health and how it’s never too late to contribute to your super. This was such a wonderful conversation with Sally, and we could have talked with her for hours. It was just like chatting with a girlfriend. We hope you enjoy this as much as we did. Meet Sam Wykes, a former professional Rugby player for NSW Waratahs. After first connecting with Sam when working with the Waratahs during his final year of playing professional rugby it was clear that he had such a gift. He was always able to make others around him feel welcome, connected, and feel as though they belong. From rugby to retirement, Sam explores what this transition out of professional sport has looked like and what challenges it presents to both his everyday life and sense of identity. We absolutely adore how Sam was able to let us in on both the vulnerable side of this transition as well as a few funny unexpected struggles of life after sport. So be sure to tune in for those because they will be a hoot. To follow along on Sam's story head to his Instagram Here. Growing up, like most kids, I had three heroes: Mel Gibson, Greg Norman, and Phil Kearns. All Aussies. All champions in their own way in their chosen field. To celebrate our 100th Profitable Farmer Podcast episode, it gives me great pleasure to introduce Wallaby great Phil Kearns (OAM). Phil is without question one of Australia's greatest ever Rugby Union players. With 67 tests as #2 for the Australian Wallabies,10 as Captain and 73 games for the NSW Waratahs, Phil was a key contributor to 3 successful Rugby World Cup campaigns, including the memorable 1991 and 1999 victories over England and New Zealand, respectively. Beyond Rugby, Phil is a thoughtful, composed and genuine leader. A true gentleman of sport, business and philanthropy. I was lucky enough to meet Phil recently when he opened the new clubhouse at the local Cootamundra Rugby grounds. The time he openly shared with my family, the kids of the Club and their families was incredible. His passion for Australian Rugby, grass-roots footy, local communities, and youth development is inspiring. His contribution to the game of Rugby and its future in Australia is significant. Enjoy this conversation where we connect and discuss: the past and future Australian Rugby landscape; the process to win the recent Rugby World Cup bid, what this means for Australian Rugby; his career as a Wallaby; and his take on leadership and how to get the best for & from individuals and teams. There is always so much we can learn from spending time with people like Phil. His outlook is clear, concise and refreshing. Again, I hope you enjoy this interview just as much as I did recording it. Thank you, Phil, and congratulations on an incredible career and contribution. Thank you, everyone, for being part of the Profitably Farmer journey – bring on our second century! Hutch & Team P.S. After what has already been a remarkable debut season in Super W rugby, the unbeaten Fijiana Drua are out to win the premiership at their first attempt by beating the previously invincible NSW Waratahs for a second time.
Our Great Coach on this episode is Rod Macqueen. Rod is an Australian Rugby Union Coach. Rod started coaching in the 1980's before taking over the NSW Waratahs in 1991. From there he went on to become the inaugural coach for the Brumbies in the newly formed Super Rugby competition. In 1997 he was appointed as the Head Coach of the Australian Wallabies, and the team goes on to win the 1999 World Cup, the Tri Nation series for the first time, the Bledisloe Cup 3 years in a row and then it culminates with being the first Australian team to win over the British & Irish Lions in 2001. Rod is also successful business owner and in this interview talks about the similarities between sport and business when it comes to leadership, culture and strategy. Some of the other key highlights of our discussion include: The journey of the Australian team towards winning the World Cup, and how he laid out the path to that victory by focusing the on 3 key elements of the journey; the beginning , the journey and the destiny. His views on the fine line between arrogance and confidence. How he used business plans to outline the vision for this teams, and a key part of that plan was the coaching succession plan to replace him. And The importance of empowering the players to make decisions, so that as the coach can look forward and try to see what is going to happen next. This was a terrific conversation with Rod, and I hope you enjoy it as much as we did.
