Let's go back to Wellington! This conversation was recorded during our stay in Wellington last January. Following in the footsteps of Beezie Madden, Kent Farrington and Katie Prudent, this is another iconic name in American equestrianism that cannot be ignored. With 5 Olympic medals from 6 participations, McLain Ward is one of the most successful riders on the American continent. This year, he celebrates his 50th birthday and completes his 35th season at the highest level of show jumping. Impressive. But what struck us most when we recorded this episode was his vision and philosophy. McLain thinks, analyses, studies and organises. Nothing is ever left to chance and each performance seems to be more a harvest than a result, the fruit of a well-defined process. Relying on a well-oiled system, he makes sure he maintains his position, season after season, deadline after deadline. As you will see from this episode, McLain Ward is a top-level athlete in every sense of the word.Hébergé par Ausha. Visitez ausha.co/politique-de-confidentialite pour plus d'informations.
Last January, as you know, we made our way back to Wellington — for the fourth year in a row.Every year, we spend a few days between Wellington and Ocala, meeting riders, trainers, even owners who are part of what we call the American equestrian industry. Over the years, we've sat down with iconic names like Katie and Henri Prudent, Rodrigo Pessoa, Kent Farrington or Beezie Madden — always with one goal in mind: better understanding how the North American system works. This year, we wanted to go a step further.Rather than one-on-one interviews, we brought four riders around the table for a real conversation. A round table to ask the big questions:Why don't more American riders produce their own horses? What defines the trainer-rider relationship across the Atlantic? And most of all — what can each system, American and European, learn from the other? So here it is — an honest, passionate and even really fresh and funny conversation between Charlotte Jacobs, Marie Hécart, Mark Bluman and Quentin Judge. We hope you enjoy it as much as we did — and as always, we're looking forward to continuing the conversation with you on our socials. You've probably heard of positive reinforcement training or “clicker training” in the context of dog training, but what about for horses? Over the years, the use of positive reinforcement in the equestrian world has drawn attention and interest, but most of us are still unaware of exactly how this training works, and how it can fit into our own training and riding journeys. There's actually a lot of science backing this type of training, and it's used to train countless species of animals in a way that promotes happy, feel-good hormones and in turn, lower levels of fear and anxiety in the training process. So, is it time we see more of this training in the horse world? Shawna Karrasch is a pioneer in the use of positive reinforcement training in horses after extensive experience researching and practicing the training with marine mammals. She has now helped countless horses and riders reframe their training by helping riders and trainers understand the science behind R+ raining, and perhaps most notably helped Beezie Madden's ride, Judgement ISF, overcome his fear of the water jump. In this episode, Shawna and host Caroline Culbertson (@caroline.culbertson) discuss: They discuss: The two major components of positive reinforcement training: the brain and body Why R+ training can elicit an eye roll from some trainers in the industry, and where the negative stereotypes come from How you can borrow the essence of this training in a way that works for you How the training can work in the most competitive realms of horse sport

On the final episode of 2019 Chris Stafford is joined by Mollie Bailey, Senior Reporter at The Chronicle of the Horse to take a look back at the highlights of the year in equestrian sport. They discuss the Pan American Games in Lima, Peru where Mollie watched the U.S. Eventing team win the gold medal which crucially secured their place for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games and Lynn Symansky, riding in her third Pan Ams, won the silver medal aboard RF Cool Play. The US Dressage Team also took silver as team rookies Sarah Lockman riding First Apple clinched the individual gold with Canada’s Tina Irwin and Laurencio took the silver and Jennifer Baumert also making her championship debut for the US took the bronze. In jumping the intrepid Beezie Madden also claimed a bronze medal to get the US on the podium again. On the other side of the pond the focus was on the European Championships in the three Olympic disciplines. Germany’s Ingrid Klimke claimed back to back individual eventing titles - Britain’s Pippa Funnell is the only other rider to manage that feat. Pippa herself won Burghley again; it’s been 16 years since she last won on her Grand Slam partner Prinmore’s Pride. Runner up to Pippa at Burghley was her friend Piggy French who has won 15 international events this year including Badminton. Germany dominated the European Dressage Championships with the doyen of dressage Isabell Werth adding yet another gold medal to her bounty of championship titles. Elsewhere show jumper Adrienne Sternlicht and Benny’s Legacy shone the spotlight on US riders with back to back wins in World Cup Qualifiers as they focus on the World Cup Final in Las Vegas next April. And on the Global Champions Tour recently married and arguably one of the most recognizable riders on the circuit with her flowing feathers, Dani Waldman née Goldstein won two events on the star studded tour this year in Berlin and Shanghai riding her one-in-a-lifetime partner Lizziemary. Chris Stafford returns with news and interviews from around the world of equestrian sport by counting down to this year’s Land Rover Kentucky Three Day Event and featuring some of the first timers to the only 5 star competition in North America. The first guest is California based Frankie Thierot Stutes who had a bumper season last year with her 11 year old Oldenburg gelding Chatwin when they culminated by winning the FairHill three star event. I spoke to Frankie after her dressage at the Galway Downs International 4star short event last week which was the third outing of the year for the partnership as they prepare for the big event. Later in program we will hear from Katherine Bateson-Chandler who, together with the 14 year old Dutch gelding Alcazar, won the FEI four star Grand Prix Freestyle last week in week 12 of the Global Dressage Festival in Wellington, Florida scoring a personal best with her long time partner. The World Cup Dressage and Jumping Finals takes place this week in Gothenburg, Sweden and if you’ve been following the World Cup season it may seem that if Germany’s Isabell Werth is on form she will always be the one to beat and certainly with five World Cup titles to her name the doyen of dressage will be giving it all she has with Weihegold to make it a hat-trick of World Cup titles. There are combinations who could deny her the title again including one of the US ladies and Laura Graves will know this is her best chance to add this to her career highlights with Verdades. Veteran show jumper Beezie Madden is also going for a hat-trick and will be under no illusion of the stiff competition the popular American rider faces if she is to bring it home again with Breitling. She has three other women joining her on the US contingent the 20 year old Eve Jobs and twenty-one year old Kelli Cruciotti (21) will be two of the youngest riders in action along with Georgina Bloomberg. American women have a great record at the World Cup Show Jumping Final. Melanie Smith won the title in 1983, Leslie Burr Lenehan in 1986) and Katharine Burdsall in 1987. The World Cup Finals mark the end of the indoor season so once the dust has settled in Gothenburg the focus will turn to the spring season of Nations Cups and selection for the Pan American Games which take place in Lima, Peru this summer and the European Championships. Both competitions are the last chance for nations to qualify for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. For show notes and related links for this episode click HERE.
