We used translation software to dub the episode for our English podcast, The Equestrian Connection. Please excuse any imperfections in the conversation as a result. Richard Vogel is a German rider who started riding horses at the age of four, following in the footsteps of his family who have always had a strong passion for horses. He began competing at the age of seven and since then has has achieved numerous national and international successes. After a riding apprenticeship and valuable years of training with Ludger Beerbaum starting in 2015, today Richard Vogel is the No. 1 German show jumper and sits at No. 10 in the world rankings. Currently, Richard continues to compete internationally and represents Germany in various equestrian competitions. At the same time, he runs a business together with Sophie Hinners and David Will; a sports and sales stable in Hesse with two locations, known for the first-class training of show jumpers. Richard's philosophy can be summarized by his motto "The more you work, the luckier you get." In this podcast episode, Richard Vogel tells host Christian Kröeber how he worked for his success from an early age, why his business partners rarely compete in the same competitions as he does, what he thinks makes a good rider, and what he thinks needs to change if we want to still be able to experience equestrian sport in 20 years. Show jumping Olympic medalist Shane Rose has been suspended for wearing a mankini in a dress up show jumping competition at Wallaby Hill near Sydney at the weekend. If it needs any explanation a mankini is a cross between a wafer thin unitard and a lycra bathing suit, cut in a deep v shape at the front with crotch coverage, the reverse view is a string thong. Competitors rode out in an array of costumes but it seems someone took exception to Rose's attire. Shane Rose speaks to Lisa Owen. We offer these shows for free. If you think it's worthy of a small contribution, we sure would appreciate it. This is Episode 4 of Season 4, and in it, I talk with Pete Reinholz. Maybe this is a departure of sorts. Pete does not have a website or a book or anything to sell. He does write songs. He sings and plays guitar, and that's the context in which I met him several years ago in Elko, Nevada. Pete graduated from Montana State University with a degree in Natural Resources and Rangeland Ecology. Since then, he's been mostly horseback, working in southern Montana and northern Wyoming. But last year, he made the leap to the showjumping world as a trainer. To me, that seems like a big, interplanetary leap, so I was happy to talk with him for a bit. I think it takes a lot for a cowboy to step out of jeans and away from big country and pull on a pair of breeches and work in an arena. Pete was pretty philosophical when I asked him about it. "Being a more refined and versatile rider never screwed anybody up," he said. Our title sponsor is Lucerne Farms, producers of quality forage feeds. It's hay season, the rain has let up for a while, and the James family is busy in the fields of northern Maine. That's where they're cutting, tedding, and baling alfalfa and timothy. The forage, wrapped tightly in plastic, is perfect for traveling to competitions or horse camping vacations. We also thank Chill Angel, makers of superfine merino loungewear, and Prairie Wind Hat Works, where Sampson Moss crafts custom-built, felt hats to your specifications. After I stopped recording, Pete mentioned that, oh, by the way, he played polo for three years at MSU. Turns out Sheridan, Wyoming, not far from where he lives now, has quite the polo scene. Riders have been playing there since the 1890's, he said, making it the oldest polo venue west of the Mississippi. Hey, in past seasons, we have talked a bit about mental health and how it may or may not interfere with our horse work. We know there is a connection with wellness and the therapy horses offer us. But I'd be the first to admit that horses aren't there to magically solve our problems. Horse pros and working cowboys, along with horse vets, can be strained and stressed by their work. I'm guessing you know of a friend, or a friend of a friend in your horse circles who has struggled with substance abuse and/or suicide. While Jec and I want to steer clear of discussions around aromatherapy or crystals, we would like to be open to ideas and conversations and strategies for improving the mental health situation in our horse communities. So, if you have any thoughts in that vein, hit us up with an email here. Thanks to Redmond Equine and Pharm Aloe – for generously sponsoring our podcast. Check out Pharm Aloe's aloe pellets which you can simply sprinkle on your horse's feed and Redmond's Rock on a Rope which you can simply hang on a fence. We think you'll love ‘em. Also thanks to Patagonia WorkWear for their continued support. Give us feedback, suggest a topic or guest, or make a donation and you'll be automatically entered to win one of two free Patagonia WorkWear items that we give away every month. Don't forget that Redmond Equine is sending a complimentary syringe of Daily Gold Stress Relief to everyone who drops a tip in our donation jar. Pretty cool and a $15 value. If you get something of value from our podcast, please consider making a donation. We sure would appreciate it. That's it. Another episode in the can and out of the barn. Thanks for listening, y'all!
Paige Jardine is a 29-year-old Showjumper operating out of Guardian Stables with her boyfriend Nicky Galligan. Originally from Australia, Paige has been living abroad in the US for the last 10 years. She's had a challenging last year, losing her beloved mare Chaccara Blue, but is more committed than ever to pursue the highest levels of this sport. Listen in!
You hear it all the time: “Young riders today don't know about horsemanship.” “Kids today just want to get on and ride.” “There are no more barn rats.” These complaints point to a larger potential issue of losing generational knowledge. Is it something we, as horsepeople, should be concerned about? To help us answer this question, we turned to Archie Cox, owner and head trainer at Brookway Stables. Along the way, our broad conversation covered a lot of ground that should hopefully make us all feel a little better about the future, and a little more empowered about how we can all become better horsemen. Archie has been immersed in the horse world his entire life, and has operated Brookway Stables for 23 years. During that time, he's coached numerous horses and riders to national titles and wins at the biggest shows in the country, and remarkably through it all, he's kept the same manager, farrier, and vet. His daily routine revolves around starting early (as in 3am!), staying consistent, and keeping things simple - all of which he says contributes to his amazing success in the industry. In the conversation, host Caroline Culbertson and Archie discuss: Whether riders in 2023 know as much about horse management as riders in 1983 The role of “tradition” and its connection to safety and function How passion acts as the driving force for those who seek out knowledge Social media, and why it's such an important tool in horse education Archie's two C's: Consistency and Curiosity How to find your “flavor” of riding, and why the industry needs all types of riders The responsibility of trainers in teaching horse management as well as riding

Have you ever dreamed of, seriously considered, or actually bought a young horse? *Raises hand* Most of us fall somewhere on that spectrum, enticed by the seemingly infinite possibilities that the unknown of a young horse offers. Kama understands what works, what doesn't, and what young horses require. In this episode, they discuss: Main reasons why people seek out young or undeveloped horses (money is a big one!) Understanding if you have the setup and the skills for a young horse Kama's mental exercise of three main things to consider when considering a horse to buy Pre-purchase exams on young horses and what really matters

In our 10th weekly episode of the first series of The Horse & Hound Podcast, we kick off with an exclusive interview featuring top British showjumper William Whitaker. Our magazine editor and podcast host Pippa Roome chats to William about how it feels to be based back at home after spending a number of years in Europe and the US, his memories of Olympia and what success there means to him, the special horses of his career so far and his plans for the future. Moving on to the week's top news stories, our news editor Eleanor Jones and news writer Becky Murray join Pippa to discuss this week's key stories including riders' responsibilities and the Covid-19 rules in place at international shows, why more people are calling for yards to review their turnout facilities and what owners need to know about the microchipping rules that are coming in very soon. We also hear from vet Ricky Farr MRCVS, who this week discusses why hard ground is a problem for some horses and what owners can do to help avoid putting their horses at risk. We hope you will enjoy it.
