SHOW NOTES KEY IDEAS: Today we get to profile a very innovative and hard-working farmer. At the same time, we get to tell a story that we have told before, and we get to show you a great model for creating a sustainable farm as well as creating off-farm income. Allen Deutz is the owner of a farm purchased by his great-grandfather in 1920 in southwestern Minnesota. In just one more year this will be a century farm. Like so many generational farmers Allen was faced with creating a business model that would allow him to continue to farm the property and have it available for the next generation. Allen first tried the dairy business, as his father had operated this farm as dairy. However, even as he was excelling in his performance as a dairy farmer, the economics of the dairy industry pushed him right out at his small scale. So, Allen transitioned to raising some commodities - corn and soybeans, raising grass-fed beef, raising all-natural pork, and raising free-range meat chickens. It is in this diversity that Allen has been able to create a system that is regenerative and hedges against low prices in any one area. Allen recently purchased a no-till drill for planting on his own property. He realized two things. First, when he was not planting that piece of equipment was just sitting there, not making any money. Second, because of the wet spring, his region had been having many farmers who had not been able to plant and could use his help planting in cover crops for the rest of the season. Thus, a form of off-farm income was born. ADVICE FROM ALLEN: PRIDE OF OWNERSHIP: Allen suggests that you do not borrow money to buy equipment just so you can own it. Research whether or not it makes you money to own the equipment vs. hiring the work done or renting the equipment. EASY: Renting is easy, and if you do this for a season it can help you figure out whether or not purchasing the same equipment makes sense. PERSONAL HABIT: Allen is very good about penciling out expenses and whether or not he is making money on any given aspect of his farm. This has led him to another form of off-farm income in the off-season where he does this for other farmers. On this episode of United We Ag, I sit down the Kelli Foreman of the Kodiak Baptist Mission in Kodiak, AK. At KBM, Kelli and her team do a little bit of everything. The farm is not only constantly filled with the sights and sounds of the goats, horses, cows, pigs, chickens and the island's one and only mule, but also that of children! Kodiak Baptist Mission offers a wide range of youth programs ranging from preschool and kindergarten, after school activities and summer / specialty camps. In addition, they operate the only certified goat dairy in the state of Alaska. With a herd of cattle on a neighboring island to manage, as well as the day to day duties on the farm, the students stay outside all day learning the foundations of natural stewardship, caring for animals and applying lessons in faith to their day to day activities.
Tourism businesses in Rotorua are already feeling the impact of the latest Covid-19 scare with a lot of people cancelling trips this weekend. An extra testing clinic has opened in Rotorua after it was revealed an Auckland woman who tested positive for the virus, visited the city. She went to Waiora Lakeside Hotel, the Skyline Gondola and Heritage Farm and 3D Gallery. Andrew Wilson heads the city council owned tourism and development agency Destination Rotorua.

This first episode in our three-part bundle is a conversation we had with Winona LaDuke. Winona LaDuke is Anishinaabekwe from the White Earth Nation in what is known as Minnesota. She is the executive director and co-founder of Honor the Earth alongside the Indigo Girls. Honor the Earth is an Indigenous led environmental justice organization that supports water protectors, builds Indigenous regeneration, and is invested in the next economy through a just transition. She is also the founder of Winona’s Hemp and Heritage Farm – a two-part hemp farm and agricultural institute currently working on growing the next economy through localized, tribally led food and hemp growth. Commercial fishing is one of Alaska’s top economic sources alongside the oil and gas industry and tourism. It currently sustains more than 15,000 jobs and is worth over 1.5 billion dollars. 62.3 million fish returned to the water shed 2018 with another record year following in the 2019 season. While the commercial fishing industry supports many local peoples, most of those 15,000 jobs are held by out of state fishermen and cannery workers. Now is a crucial time to be discussing the 2020 fishing season and how it will be impacted by the Coronavirus. April is the time that many people start to make their way north to prepare for the season and our communities are not equipped to handle a possible outbreak. We are calling on out-of-state commercial fishermen and canneries to seriously reflect on their impact in our region and reconsider the 2020 salmon season. Our communities have already seen sickness and our elders still remember the 1919 influenza that swept through Bristol Bay. In light of this, we would like to hear from you - If you are from Bristol Bay or a community that sees a large influx of people due to fishing operations, please let us know your thoughts on the upcoming season. You can submit your testimony at onthelandmedia.com or submit a voice memo to deenaalee@onthelandpod.com. We look forward to hearing from you and appreciate you in advance for opening yourself to engaging in tis dialogue. Andre Dignelli has been producing national hunter, jumper and equitation champions for over 20 years. He came from a non-horsey family and along with his two brothers, convinced his parents to move to rural New York where they eventually talked their father into building a makeshift barn so they could start their own boarding business. At age 18, Andre won the 1985 US Equestrian Team Show Jumping Talent Search Finals and he credits this win for forever changing his trajectory. Andre went on to work as Judy Richter’s assistant trainer at Coker Farm. He rode Judy's jumper Gaelic in two World Cup Finals and the 1991 Pan American Games where they earned a team bronze medal and placed fourth individually. That same year, he co-trained Peter Lutz to wins in both the Maclay National Championship and the USET Finals. Andre decided to focus on teaching and in 1994, with his brother Michael, he bought Heritage Farm in New York and turned it into a state-of-the-art facility. Andre has always been incredibly driven and his decades-long success can be attributed to his hard work, determination, attention to detail and his preparation skills. In this episode, Andre shares how he worked up through the ranks and made a name for himself in the horse world, how he built his business into what it is today and to what he attributes his success. Andy and Melissa Dunham own and operate Grinnell Heritage Farm in Grinnell, Iowa. From corn-and-bean ground and no infrastructure when they started in 2006, Grinnell Heritage Farm has grown to twenty acres of vegetables, marketed through a 250-member CSA, natural foods stores, multiple farmers market, and a new on-farm pizza night that they started this year. Andy and Melissa share how they worked with New Pioneer Food Co-op to develop their skills as market farmers and to learn how to better serve the wholesale marketplace. We also dig into their CSA model, employee management on Grinnell Heritage Farm, and how they’ve changed their CSA to respond to the needs of both customers and employees. We also learn how Andy and Melissa developed their farm infrastructure, created environmental enhancements to change the farm ecology and benefit the farm overall, organic weed control in asparagus, and how they’ve managed repeated pesticide drift incidents on their Central-Iowa farm. While the prospects of starting a small market farm that grosses over $100,000 is lucrative and attractive, it's not for everyone or possible in every location. And that's the topic of today's episode with Blake Cothron of Peaceful Heritage Farm.... A lot of what you hear about in the small scale farmer movement are the uber-successful small farmers that are grossing 1, 2 or $300k per acre. They are inspiring stories, but those stories all share one thing in common, their markets. Typically small farmers grossing big dollars are able to do that by selling their produce into larger, higher end urban market streams - market streams which will pay top dollar for microgreens, salad mix, and baby root veg. What if you don't live near one of those large urban markets? What if you don't have high end farmers markets and restaurants to sell product too? What do the prospects of your rural farming career hold? Today, I am talking to a farmer who faced that exact problem, making farming work in very rural Amish Kentucky without high end restaurants and with a sleepy farmer's markets. In this episode Blake Cothron of Peaceful Heritage Farm located in very rural Crab Orchard Kentucky will share his story. It's an inspiring story about a husband and wife making a small farm work, by approaching farming in a very smart way. A necessity, when your local customer based is used to buying vegetables at prices like 3 for $1 or $1 per dozen sweet corn. If you're interested in farming, but you are nowhere near a large city, then this episode is for you. Chris Stafford talks to British born show jumper Amanda Derbyshire who arrived Stateside as a 21 year old on the brink of her international career eager to explore America while experiencing the different show scene and what opportunities there might be for her here. Her upbringing in the north of England had given her a solid foundation of horsemanship through Pony Club and having the opportunity to work with Nick Skelton and Laura Kraut opened the door to riding good horses—including Big Star at his first show. For the past seven years from starting out with Andre Dignelli at Heritage Farm in New York learning all about the equitation and hunter jumper worlds, she moved to Becky & David Gochman’s Baxter Hill Farm where she is now the manager and trainer. Amanda currently has four horses at four star level and has been on top form since the winter season in Florida. Returning to Devon Horse Show recently this for the seventh time she was crowned Open Jumper Champion after she won two major classes. Amanda is ambitious about where her career might take her and hopes to earn herself a place on the British team. Chris caught up with her at the Upperville Horse Show this past weekend and asked her about the pros and cons of being based in the U.S. For more conversations with top riders as well as elite athletes from many other sports visit wispsports.com where you can find podcasts, videos, blogs and articles. This week on Greenhorn Radio, our hostess Severine von Tscharner Fleming interviews Jacob Cowgill of Prairie Heritage Farm outside of Conrad, Montana. Prairie Heritage Farm is in the tradition of old-time Montana farms that existed decades ago: diversified, small-scale, and locally-based. Listen in as Jacob discusses the challenges of starting a farm with a full-time job and a family, selling in a small direct market, and some of the upcoming grain ventures of Prairie Heritage Farm. This program was sponsored by Hearst Ranch. “When the winter hit, we started thinking about the next season and how we were going to make it work. We made the nonsensical decision that I would quit my full-time job with benefits.” —Jacob Cowgill on Greenhorn Radio “It’s really amazing to see whats going on elsewhere, and see that we’re part of something larger going on in the U.S.”–Jacob Cowgill on Greenhorn Radio
