Katy Kirby will be joining myself and The Uptown Controllers on tour starting next week so I caught up with her on this special flash episode of That's How I Remember It. Katy was in the parking lot of the Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach CA when she dialed in, so there's a little ambient noise, but that's life on the road. And perhaps it added to our discussion about learning to sing harmonies, quality of light as a memory trigger, the making of her amazing record Cool Dry Place, the oranges that show up in her songs, and the tour we are embarking on. So cool to speak to one of my favorite songwriters, looking forward to seeing her set each night. Season 2 of THIRI coming up before too long, listen and subscribe.
We had the pleasure of interviewing Chuck Ragan of Hot Water Music from the Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach CA! ** This interview was recorded prior to the COVID-19 pandemic ** With his emotional and gravel-coated bellow, vocalist/guitarist Chuck Ragan made a name for himself as one-fourth of the much-loved Gainesville post-hardcore outfit Hot Water Music before releasing his first solo album in 2007. Alongside friends Chris Wollard, Jason Black, and George Rebelo, Ragan formed Hot Water Music in the early '90s. Through a slew of well-received albums for labels like No Idea, Doghouse, and Epitaph -- and an incessant grassroots touring regime -- the passionate crew turned itself into a highly respected and influential act on the underground scene. Outside of his main gig, Ragan also recorded two side albums with some friends, including the stripped-down rock of Rumbleseat and the punk-oriented Cro(w)s. In the spring of 2005, Hot Water Music went on an indefinite hiatus, largely spurred by Ragan's desire to spend time outside of the band with his growing family. The group's other members went on playing music together (soon forming the Draft), while Ragan concentrated on his home life and, eventually, writing some acoustic-based material. Hot Water Music officially closed up shop in May 2006, and Ragan began playing various shows solo, logging time by the year's end alongside acts like Dustin Kensrue, Flogging Molly, the Lawrence Arms, Rob Huddleston, and Tim Barry. Ragan (who was a carpenter by day) signed with California indie SideOneDummy Records in early 2007 for the May release of his intimate debut, Los Feliz. Recorded live on February 19, 2007 at Tangiers in Los Feliz, California, the album features Ragan armed with just an acoustic guitar and harmonica, and occasionally joined on-stage by Ted Hutt and Jon Gaunt. Ragan also set up a "singles club" with his buddies at No Idea, sending subscribers a new 7" (six total) every month or so from September 2006 to June 2007. In 2008 Ragan launched the Revival Tour, a long-running, internationally acclaimed acoustic collaboration that's featured a revolving door of talented musicians from the alt-country, bluegrass, and punk scenes over the years. He released his second solo outing, Gold Country, the following year and the Christopher Thorn-produced Covering Ground in 2011, and reunited with Hot Water Music in 2012 for the album Exister. Till Midnight, his fourth solo long-player, followed in early 2014. A year later he and songwriter Rocky Voltolato released a split EP entitled Kindred Spirit on Side One Dummy. ~ Corey Apar, Rovi We want to hear from you! "Embrace Your Stink" is something Barry said to me before we hiked from Little Harbor to Two Harbors on the #TransCatalinaTrail. As I was hiking up this ridgeline, I thought about my stink - I was ripe after four days on the trail - but we all have a scent, it's what makes us, us. What else makes me, me? What were the things I had been trying to fix that I just couldn't? What were some of the stories I had been telling myself? All of the things that society said I had to change to fit into the American Beauty Standard, I released on this mountain. By the time I got to the top (first picture) I felt liberated from my own mental prison. Tonight, let's gather around the campfire and talk about how we can heal the world of this deep trauma we are seeing on full display. Spoiler alert: it starts with us as individuals. Nattali Rize says that #OneLoveIsAction and we agree. The next time I felt like I did on that mountain was when I saw Nattali play live for the first time at the Belly Up Tavern. Her mission and her message were and are right on time. Can we, as a conscious collective, embrace our stink? Can we release the lies society has conditioned us to believe and take our power back? Join me and Nattali for a campfire chat + jam session as we explore ways to bring this healing to the masses. Sue Shaw is the founder of Sun Drenched Vibes and owns the Reggae Ranch. Together, we are building the world we want to live in. Like Ziggy Marley says, love is our religion and everything centers around that out here on this mountain. Learn more about her story, her mission, her message. Sirena Rana Dufault is one of the most grounded humans I know. Her energy is an anchor and when I think about the world I want to live in, Sirena is part of that world. She's logged thousands of miles on the trails, she literally wrote the book on day hikes on the Arizona Trail, and she's on a mission to make the outdoors more inclusive and diverse. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/hikingmyfeelings/support
I was so pleased to get to know Kathryn Cloward and her incredible story. Kathryn is an award-winning book series author, performing songwriter, media publisher and producer, and serial entrepreneur. She is also the founder and CEO of Kandon Unlimited, Inc., a heart-centered mindful media company intent on creating positive and empowering media for people of all ages. We learned about her life in the corporate world, the challenges she faced and how her strong belief in herself propelled her to great achievements as an artist and a business owner. It was these experiences as a child and as an adult that led to the launch of her Kathryn the Grape brand. Jennifer Klein joined us to talk music, Poway, Synanon and so much more. We discussed her organic creation process and capturing her emotions in song. Jennifer shared her experience making her first music video at her Poway home for her song “Lean into Joy”. We also learned about her experience making the songs “So Good” about a special relationship, “Waste of Time” about feeling not appreciated, and “Passing You By” about cell phones and her children. Jennifer also shared the thrill of doing a gig at the Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach. Then we dove deep into Jennifer’s childhood story as a member of the Synanon community. This was a fascinating discussion of living in a commune, being exposed to Synanon’s therapy process called “The Game” and her experience as a child in a group that was considered highly controversial. Jennifer discussed having her head shaved as a child and feeling very different around others when outside the commune. In spite of some of the highly charged negative aspects of Synanon, Jennifer shared many positive experiences as a child in the community. Jennifer Klein and I also discuss many other interesting people and places including Sinead O’Connor, Alanis Morissette, Encinitas, St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Mello Yoga, Barbra Streisand, John Legend, Meghan Trainor, Kacey Musgrave, Tom Petty, Beatles, Old Poway Park, Jewel, Interchange, Pacific Beach, Capri Blue, 4S Ranch, You are Truth, What if Anything was Possible?, Passing You By, Charles Dederich, Chuck Dederich, Synanon Game, Santa Monica, Petaluma, Marin County, Tomales Bay, Oakland, Doris Day, Ralph Waldo Emerson, “Poway is Up and Coming”, Half Moon Bay, Synamilk. The life of a musician is a lot of hurry-up-and-wait. Be in the lobby at 9am or you will be left behind - so you can wait for the bus - on which you will sit for the next 8 hours as you drive from state to state, town to town and gig to gig. Mark Spencer is the kind of musician who knows this mantra all too well. He has been a professional musician for most of his adult life, starting out as member of alt-country pioneers The Blood Oranges before joining Uncle Tupelo founder Jay Farrar's solo tours, a gig that eventually evolved into his present job as a guitarist and multi-instrumentalist for Son Volt. There have been a lot more gigs along the way, in the studio and onstage with artists like Lisa Loeb, Freedy Johnston, Jim Lauderdale, Wanda Jackson and a host of others. He produces artists out of his Brooklyn studio, The Tape Kitchen, and can be found on the road this year touring to promote Son Volt's latest album "Honky Tonk." Spencer also recorded "Honky Tonk" in Son Volt's hometown of St. Louis - as well as in his studio - and also learned how to play the pedal steel guitar to ensure the album stayed true to Farrar's goal to pay homage to the Bakersfield style of country music. I had a chance to catch up with Spencer after a Son Volt soundcheck at The Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach, California as the band was wrapping up the Southwest leg of the Honky Tonk Tour.

Welcome to another edition of Po Politickin. In this episode we politick San Diego producer/rapper Weshaven. Artist Bio: Weshaven was born in 1980 and grew up all over San Diego. His mother moved to Portland Oregon in 1989 and during trips to visit her in his early teens he had chances to run sound at some of the smaller gigs she was playing. With a love for music and lyrics from an early age these live interactions with blues musicians really sparked a fire inside him. He began writing around this time, but didnʼt take it seriously until his senior year in high school. About a year later he attended a school in Los Angeles for sound engineering. There he had an opportunity to learn on professional equipment and intern in real studios recording many types of music. Fast forward a decade or so. After engineering in multiple studios, playing some of the biggest and smallest venues in Southern California, gaining and losing sponsorships, opening for artists such as Redman, WC, Killah Priest, Ghostface Killah, Slick Rick and many others as one half of The NUKL HEDZ, Weshaven is settled in at The Dungeon Recording Studio in Carlsbad. With two solo projects of his own scheduled for release before summer 2012 and producing artists under his own label teamed with P.O.R. it looks to be a solid year. With a string of charity events lined up for late spring through early fall Weshaven is trying to give back to the community that created who he is today. The first is scheduled for late May at the Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach. This event will go to help Care House for San Diegoʼs troubled and homeless youth, as well as selling T-Shirts to help a local Vista family, The Peltierʼs, with an infant son set to undergo his second open heart surgery before the age of 2. The estimates state over 2,000 children within San Diego alone are homeless. Under served youth statistics are much higher. For more info on Care House, you can visit there web page at www.carehouseinfo.org The shows are multi genre events, including DJ’s, Reggae, Rock and Hip Hop. The first of which is hosted by Def Jam and Stand Up Revolution comic Tommy Chunn. With an art show and auction of San Diego artists as well to include all walks of life in the charity. For more info on these events, or if you’d like to get involved email Weshaven at weshaventha1@gmail.com or www.facebook.com/wes.haven
