Freedy Johnston is a singer-songwriter whose storytelling and melodies strike deep chords. From the heartlands of Kinsley, Kansas, Johnston's works resonate with tales of heartbreak, alienation, and disappointment. His 1992 album, Can You Fly, won praise from none other than The New York Times, hailed as one of the finest of the year. Then came 1994's This Perfect World, produced by Butch Vig, spawning the hit "Bad Reputation" and earning Johnston the title of Rolling Stone's "songwriter of the year."Johnston's latest album, Back on the Road to You, featured collaborations with Aimee Mann, Susanna Hoffs, and Susan Cowsill, once again affirming his mastery in crafting soulful and unforgettable songs.Yet, there's more to Freedy Johnston than his music. His dedication extends to Joey's Song, a non-profit that raises awareness and funds for epilepsy research. Founded in memory of Mike Gomoll's son, Joey's Song unites musicians to support this critical cause. Johnston's heartfelt contributions underscore his commitment to wielding music as a force for good.Appleton based musician/animator/historian Frank Anderson acted as our special guest co-host for the interview. Growing up outside of Boston, multi-instrumentalist David Hamburger first picked up a guitar at the age of 12. Through his first guitar teacher he was exposed to bluegrass music, and at home his father was turning him on to Tin Pan Alley pop. Through his teens, Hamburger was also becoming more interested in blues and jazz, incorporating the various styles into his playing. His interest in blues was further stoked while attending Wesleyan University when a friend taught him to play slide. A stint at Manhattan's School of Music where he was studying jazz composition didn't last, as Hamburger left the graduate program to play with a then-unknown Freedy Johnston. Hamburger was also playing with an R&B band as well as performing solo, finally gathering some of his favorite local musicians to help him record King of the Brooklyn Delta in 1995. Extensive touring helped him to build a live following around New York and New England, while he continued to contribute guitar, dobro, and pedal steel to the recordings of others. Indigo Rose, recorded in a little more than a week, arrived in 1999.As a solo artist, David has appeared at Merlefest, the Philadelphia Folk Festival and the Old Settlers Music Festival, and venues including Passim, Cafe Lena and the Cactus Cafe. He has opened for Dave Van Ronk, Jorma Kaukonen, Rory Block and Roy Book Binder and jammed onstage with Duke Robillard, Gatemouth Brown and Tinsley Ellis. As a sideman and session musician, David has recorded with Freedy Johnston, toured the U.S. with Joan Baez, and appeared with Pete Seeger and Bruce Springsteen on Springsteen's remake of “The Ghost of Tom Joad.”David is also the author of two dozen instructional books and videos, including the award-winning Beginning Blues Guitar, which has sold over 100,000 copies and been released in a second edition after 20 continuous years in print. We talk all things acoustic blues, he even whips out a stunning sounding Martin and demos a bit for us so, not one to miss! Shoot me a question to cover in the upcoming episodes by emailing ben@thebluesguitarshow.comFollow me on instagram @bluesguitarshowpodcast Make a small donation at 'Buy me a coffee' https://www.buymeacoffee.com/bluesguitarshowAcoustic Blues Guitar Course: https://www.udemy.com/share/1086SM/Support the show

Since Joey's death in 2010, we have produced 5 charity compilation CDs featuring rare and previously unreleased music from nationally known, award-winning musicians.   Our CDs are all available as digital downloads. Radio stations from Australia to the UK to South America to Japan to Sweden and everywhere in between have played our songs. CDs have been downloaded in over 25 countries worldwide.   Joey's Song was started in 2010 following the death of four-year-old Joey Gomoll, who passed one week shy of his fifth birthday. Joey suffered from a rare and debilitating form of epilepsy known as Dravet Syndrome. Dravet's caused persistent seizures which were never able to be controlled through medications leading to severe learning disabilities. While Dravet's robbed Joey of the ability to speak, Joey remained a happy and fun-loving child. He was happiest when music was playing, allowing him to hum, drum, and sing in his own way. To be present when music was playing meant only one thing, that Joey would soon have you dancing and enjoying the music with him.

Freedy Johnston's Can You Fly album landed on a number of 1992 best-of lists, with legendary music critic Robert Christgau calling it "a perfect album” and penning the following about the record: “Contained, mature, realistic in philosophy and aesthetic, its every song a model of open-ended lyrical detail and lithe, sly melodicism, it's a flat-out monument of singer-songwriterdom--up there with Randy Newman's 12 Songs, Joni Mitchell's For the Roses, and other such prepunk artifacts.” Not too shabby. But the peak of Johnston's fame came with the 1995 single “Bad Reputation” from the follow-album, This Perfect World, produced by Butch Vig (Nirvana, Garbage, Smashing Pumpkins, Sonic Youth, et al). Johnston has been out there slogging it out ever since, releasing an ongoing career's worth of albums filled with incisive songs delivered in his trademark reedy tenor voice. Johnston first joined us on Independent's Day for episode #62 in December of 2012, and he was kind enough to return just in time for the release of his brand-new album, Back On the Road to You (Forty Below Records - 9/9/22). Joe and Freedy had a wide-ranging discussion that ranged from the making his new album, the perils of social media in a divided society, and how eager he is to get back on the road to play shows after being sidelined by the Covid-19 pandemic. He also treated us to three exclusive live performances of “There Goes a Brooklyn Girl,” “Somewhere Love,” and “Tryin' to Move On” - three new gems from Back On the Road to You.

After graduating with a B.A. in Business Management, Jared moved to Boston, studied for two years at the New England Conservatory of Music before embarking on his professional music career with a local seven-piece funk band, Hypertension.   After six years in Boston he returned to Dayton, Ohio and a year later joined the Cleveland Ohio band The Human Switchboard. After three years of touring the Midwest & East Coast still based in Ohio, he moved with the band to New York City and back-flipped into the local music scene of CBGBs, Danceteria, The Peppermint Lounge, Maxwells ( Hoboken N.J.) and The World. After HS dissolved Jared started his own band JJ Jumpers; joined the Black Rock Coalition becoming the B.R.C.'s first Director of Operations. His first booking was the B.R.C.'s first, two-day, mini-fest at CBGBs entitled “Stalking Heads” on February 11th and 12th,1987. When he departed a few years later the new Director of Operations and BRC East & West Coast Booking Committees had access to rock & roll venues all across the country. Jared has “laid the bottom” for folks such as Nona Hendryx, Wadada Leo Smith, Human Switchboard, JJ Jumpers, Vernon Reid, Marshall Crenshaw, Melvin Van Peebles, Freedy Johnston, Catie Curtis, Ivan Julian, John Paul Bourelly, Katell Keineg, Bernie Worrell, The The, Gary Lucas's Gods and Monsters, Chocolate Genius, Darlene Love, Jeff Buckley, The Yohimbe Brothers with DJ Logic & Vernon Reid, Tammy Faye Starlite and the Angels of Mercy, Pheeroan akLaff, Divine Pocket Bouncers, Cynthia Sley, Dayton Flic, The Raybeats and the Band of Gypsy's Revisited Band. Jared co-wrote a tune, recorded and toured with Charlie Musselwhite. “Sanctuary”, on Peter Gabriel's Real World label, found itself on numerous critic top ten lists and received a Grammy nomination.   A suggestion from a mutual friend, led to a call from Greg Tate landing Jared among a number of “Badasses” which included Vijay Iyer and Ronny “Wirepuller” Drayton for a jam session that morphed into Burnt Sugar The Arkestra Chamber. Burnt Sugar Index LLC soon followed with Jared handling all BSAC's business affairs such as arranging an eight-week residency with BRIC studios (The organization that presents Celebrate Brooklyn) to workshop and preview Melvin Van Peebles theatrical version of “Sweet Sweetback's Badasssss Song”. The workshop culminated with three sold-out BRIC performances before BSAC departed for Paris to perform two sold-out performances at the Sons D'Hiver Festival in 2010. Jared, overseeing “bookings” throughout the United States, Canada, France, England, Portugal, Spain, Finland, the Netherlands and Italy, just celebrated his twentieth year as BSAC's CEO last year. He's even “dipped his toe” in tour managing having worked with Concord Records Alt-Folk artist Valerie June including the set-up of her August 21st, 2013 debut television appearance on David Letterman. His television appearances include Late Night With David Letterman, The Jools Holland Show, MTV, VH1, The Tonight Show with Conan O Brien, The John Stewart Show and as bassist with The Kennedy Center Honors BB King Tribute Band; jamming with Bonnie Raitt, Dr. John, Etta James, Joe Williams and Steve Cropper to name a few. You'll find him in Nelson George's “Finding The Funk” documentary speaking about growing up while playing music in Dayton Ohio in the late Sixties. Jared has toured extensively performing at venues such as the Toronto Skydome, Red Rocks, the L.A. Forum, the Oakland Coliseum, England's Brixton Academy, Brighton Dome & Reading Festivals, The Beacon Theater, Lincoln Center and Madison Square Garden.   Jared's Info https://www.burntsugarindex.com/ https://burntsugarthearkestrachamber....

Making a Scene Presents an Interview with Seela!Born to exhausted Indian immigrants on a mild, summer eve, Seela had an average childhood battling the forces of evil with her superhuman strength. On quality meals of Supertramp, Led Zeppelin, The Muppets, David Bowie, & Julia Child, she flourished in nerdiness, topping off at 5’3″. As a young, wandering adult, Seela met her lifelong “people” in Austin’s close-knit music community.Since then she has sung back-up, collaborated with and cracked wise among musical heavyweights from Austin and beyond, sharing the stage with those such as Freedy Johnston, Sean Hayes, Anthony da Costa, Shinyribs, and Matt the Electrician. Her decades of shows in the Live Music Capitol serve as master classes on performing, orchestrating, and bandleading. She is a perpetual student who uses her vast knowledge and experience to make it all look easy.Seela’s upcoming release, “Cool”, is self-produced and her best yet. With Austin’s most exquisite players, lyrically brilliant and melodic songs, gorgeous harmonies, lush orchestration, and plenty of light on the artistry of her musicians, each of the thirteen tracks are their own world and beautifully pull together in orbit. To celebrate the album, Seela home-made animated lyric videos which will be played in track order for a gigless release party.Seela is also a painter, illustrator, graphic designer, and has a small, bread-baking business. In her free time she likes to invent cocktails and watch tv on the couch with her dreamy, drummer husband Jon Greene and their magical dog, Liza Minnelli.Seela Misra,Cool,CoolSeela Misra,Take A Picture,Coolwww.makingascene.org,Sella,Seela Misra,Prize,CoolSeela Misra,His Final Performance,Cool

On this very special holiday episode of Songcraft, we speak with Chris Butler, who wrote the new-wave holiday classic "Christmas Wrapping" by The Waitresses, as well as three other writers of well-known songs of the season: Randy Brooks, who penned the always-polarizing “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer,” Chris Eaton, who wrote Amy Grant’s classic “Breath of Heaven,” and Songwriters Hall of Famer Paul Williams, who is best known for “Rainbow Connection,” but who also wrote all the songs for The Muppet Christmas Carol. Enjoy the conversations, then hear our ultimate holiday playlist, featuring 150 titles and 150 artists with no repeated songs, and no repeated performers.  EPISODE DETAILS: PART ONE Scott and Paul discuss New Year's resolutions and how their friends at Pearl Snap Studios can help with yours; explore the difference between "sad Christmas" versus "happy Christmas;" and get into a conversation about the specific holiday songs they do and don't like.  PART TWO  Scott and Paul chat with four songwriters about their perennial Christmas hits. Our guests on this very special holiday episode are... Chris Butler – “Christmas Wrapping” by The Waitresses (1981) 12:00 mark Chris Butler has led an interesting life. He was a protester at Kent State when the Ohio National Guard opened fire on him and his fellow students in 1970; he earned a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records for the longest recorded pop song in history (the 69-minute “The Devil Glitch”); and he currently lives in Jeffrey Dahmer’s childhood home in Akron, Ohio. As Chris explains, it’s a beautiful house that nobody wanted, so he got a great deal. He is best known, however, for conceptualizing and leading the 1980s new wave group The Waitresses, which found success with “I Know What Boys Like” and their perennial holiday classic, “Christmas Wrapping.” Chris went on to produce Freedy Johnston, Joan Osborne, and others. He continues to record, produce, and release music under the banner of his own Future Fossil Music. But it’s his unlikely holiday hit that remains the songwriting income gift that keeps on giving. Though it’s been recorded by the Spice Girls, Kate Nash, Miranda Cosgrove, Bella Thorne, the Glee cast, and Kylie Minogue with Iggy Pop, the original Waitresses version is still the one you’re most likely to hear each year in the mall. Randy Brooks – “Grandma Got Run Over  by a Reindeer” by Elmo & Patsty (1979) 31:33 mark Whenever Randy Books is asked how to become a hit songwriter, he always answers, “Do You think if I knew, I’d still be a one-hit wonder after 30 years?” That hit was “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer,” one of the most loved and loathed modern holiday classics that also happens to be a multi-platinum seller that has topped Billboard’s holiday singles chart multiple times. It even earned Randy Songwriter of the Year and Song of the Year honors from SESAC, and spawned an animated Christmas special, musical toys, ornaments, greeting cards, apparel, video games, a branded hot chocolate mix, and even a Tesla dashboard app. Though the hit version of “Grandma” was recorded by Elmo & Patsy, the song has been covered by Ray Stevens, Mitch Ryder, The Coasters, and—most recently—by Jimmy Fallon and Dolly Parton. Randy continues to perform with his two bands, and solo at songwriter events all over the country. He is resigned to the fact that, no matter what else he might accomplish in life, he is destined to be remembered for just one thing—kind of like the John Wilkes Boothe of songwriters. Chris Eaton – “Breath of Heaven" by Amy Grant (1992) / "Saviour's Day" by Cliff Richard (1990) 44:55 mark UK-based singer, songwriter and musician Chris Eaton first made his mark as a writer when Sir Cliff Richard began recording his material, including the UK holiday hit “Saviour’s Day,” which reached #1 on the pop chart across the pond. In the US, however, Eaton’s Christmas standard is “Breath of Heaven,” which has been recorded by Amy Grant, Donna Summer, Jessica Simpson, Sara Groves, Vince Gill, and Melissa Manchester. Other artists who’ve recorded songs from Chris’s catalog include Janet Jackson, Sheena Easton, Keith Urban, Patti Austin, and Grover Washington, Jr. His greatest success has been in the Contemporary Christian market, where he has earned BMI awards for radio hits such as “Adore” by Jaci Velasquez, “My Heart Goes Out” by Warren Barfield, and the Rachel Lampa singles “Lift Me Up” and “Live For You.” When Amy Grant released “Breath of Heaven” as the single from her multi-platinum-selling Home for Christmas album, it topped the Christian charts and was named CCM Song of the Year by Billboard magazine. Paul Williams – Songs from The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992) 1:05:31 mark Singer, actor, author, recovery advocate, and Songwriters Hall of Famer Paul Williams has penned hits such as “We’ve Only Just Begun,” “Rainy Days and Mondays,” and “I Won’t Last a Day Without You” for The Carpenters; “Out in the Country,” “Family of Man” and “An Old Fashioned Love Song” for Three Dog Night; and “You and Me Against the World” for Helen Reddy. His songs have additionally been recorded by Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Ray Charles, David Bowie, Tony Bennett, Willie Nelson, REM, Gladys Knight, Diana Ross, Sarah Vaughn, Curtis Mayfield, Gwen Stefani, Diana Krall, the Dixie Chicks, and others. Williams is perhaps best known for his movie songs and soundtracks. He and co-writer Barbra Streisand won an Oscar, a Grammy, and a Golden Globe for “Evergreen (Love Theme from A Star is Born),” and he has earned Academy Award nominations for his musical contributions to Cinderella Liberty, Phantom of the Paradise, Bugsy Malone, and The Muppet Movie, which included his now-standard “Rainbow Connection.” Williams later reunited with Jim Henson, penning the songs for the classic children’s film The Muppet Christmas Carol.

The Golden Globe and Grammy nominee whose self-titled debut release was named one of the 100 Best Albums of the Eighties by Rolling Stone joins us to chat about his wide-ranging career, from self-penned hits as an artist such as “Someday Someway,” to co-writing the Top 10 hit "Til I Hear it from You" with the Gin Blossoms, to writing the theme for the parody film Walk Hard. PART ONE  Scott and Paul pay tribute to “Day-O” writer and former Songcraft guest Irving Burgie, who recently passed away at the age of 95; reflect on other Songcraft guests who are no longer with us; talk about the importance of Patreon in preserving the important stories of songwriters; and announce two winners of the Marty Stuart book contest.  PART TWO - 6:46 mark The guys dig deep on why nobody knows the name of lead guitar players anymore PART THREE - 14:36 mark Paul and Scott get on the phone with Marshall Crenshaw, who discusses his eclectic range of musical interests that have led him to dig in the Capitol Records vaults for forgotten 1950s country recordings AND to tour as a guest guitarist with MC5; why he got sick of the Beatles for a while; how the simple act of flipping over a cassette tape altered the course of his career; how he wrote one his best known songs in 15 minutes; the only one of his albums he didn't want to make; how he managed not to meet one of the co-writers of his biggest hits until after the song was on the radio; the reason he asked his record label to drop him; whose version of "You're My Favorite Waste of Time" is his favorite; what it's like listening to Phil Spector records on acid; and why he's reissuing his three underrated Razor & Tie albums, even though he's vowed to never release another new album again.  ABOUT MARSHALL CRENSHAW Detroit native Marshall Crenshaw’s debut self-titled album spawned the Top 40 pop hit “Someday Someway” and was named one of the Best Albums of the Eighties by Rolling Stone magazine. Establishing him as a critical darling, Crenshaw went on to release a series of eclectic studio albums that spawned classic songs such as “Whenever You’re on My Mind,” “Better Back Off,” and “You’re My Favorite Waste of Time.” The latter went on to be covered by Bette Middler, Ronnie Spector, the duo of Matthew Sweet & Susanna Hoffs, and Owen Paul, who had a Top 5 hit with it in the UK. Crenshaw carved out a special relationship with Hollywood, appearing with his band in the Francis Ford Coppola film Peggy Sue Got Married, portraying Buddy Holly in the Richie Valens biopic La Bamba, and writing a book called Hollywood Rock: A Guide to Rock ‘n’ Roll in the Movies. Additionally, he penned the title track for the John C. Reilly comedy film Walk Hard, which earned Crenshaw Golden Globe and Grammy nominations. A highly respected writer, Marshall’s songs have been covered by Kelly Willis, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Freedy Johnston, Robert Gordon, Marti Jones, and the Gin Blossoms, with whom he co-wrote the Top 10 single “Til I Hear It From You.” Ronnie Spector recorded an entire five-song EP of material from the Marshall Crenshaw catalog, and his work has earned him induction into the Michigan Rock and Roll Legends Hall of Fame.

Syd Straw released her first album, Surprise, in 1989. The record was full of earnest, broken-hearted songs with an impressive range for a new artist. The album's earthy tone landed Straw at the leading edge of the alternative country curve, and it led a seemingly open-ended invitation for Straw to lend her vocals to some of the best in the business. To name a few, Straw has been onstage and on records with Los Lobos, Wilco, Dave Alvin, Loudon Wainwright III, Leo Kottke, Rickie Lee Jones, Matthew Sweet, Van Dyke Parks, Freedy Johnston, James McMurtry, Marc Ribot, David Sanborn, Was Not Was, Victoria Williams, the dBs, Jimmer Podrasky, and The Golden Palominos. Subsequent albums followed in 1996, 2005 and 2008, and although releases may have been spread out, the quality of Straw's output never suffered. Although Straw is perhaps best known for her vocals, the unique and indelible spirit that she brings to a song or a project is what makes her a legend. She is quirky, to be sure, but she's also endearing, pleasantly sardonic and always creative - a perfect combination for a singular artist.

The life of a musician is a lot of hurry-up-and-wait. Be in the lobby at 9am or you will be left behind - so you can wait for the bus - on which you will sit for the next 8 hours as you drive from state to state, town to town and gig to gig. Mark Spencer is the kind of musician who knows this mantra all too well. He has been a professional musician for most of his adult life, starting out as member of alt-country pioneers The Blood Oranges before joining Uncle Tupelo founder Jay Farrar's solo tours, a gig that eventually evolved into his present job as a guitarist and multi-instrumentalist for Son Volt. There have been a lot more gigs along the way, in the studio and onstage with artists like Lisa Loeb, Freedy Johnston, Jim Lauderdale, Wanda Jackson and a host of others. He produces artists out of his Brooklyn studio, The Tape Kitchen, and can be found on the road this year touring to promote Son Volt's latest album "Honky Tonk." Spencer also recorded "Honky Tonk" in Son Volt's hometown of St. Louis - as well as in his studio - and also learned how to play the pedal steel guitar to ensure the album stayed true to Farrar's goal to pay homage to the Bakersfield style of country music. I had a chance to catch up with Spencer after a Son Volt soundcheck at The Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach, California as the band was wrapping up the Southwest leg of the Honky Tonk Tour.

Hi Guys!!!!!! This week's HWYW features a musical legend playing his purty songs in my kitchen, and a lot of other fun stuff as well. First and foremost, FREEDY JOHNSTON is here to play a few songs and tell us some stories within petting distance of Jimmy Jazz. Enjoy Freedy's beautiful renditions of BAD REPUTATION, THE MORTICIAN'S DAUGHTER, SEVENTIES GIRL, and his cover of THE LOOK OF LOVE, plus a haunting version of the first song he ever wrote--SPARKY THE HEROIC DOG. Also, after watching THE SOURCE FAMILY documentary, Julie throws her hat in the ring to become the first-ever female cult leader, and sets the criteria for what will be expected from her followers. Plus: why WICHITA LINEMAN is such a haunting song (it's UNFINISHED!), how those post-feminist vibrator parties actually make us feel, the quandry of porn, the sensitivity of The Long Island Princesses when it comes to 9/11 heroes, and what it must be like to be Robin Thicke. A wonderful and very special show for you to enjoy! Viva la Freedy!

After spending his formative years in the small central Kansas town of Kinsley (population 1,457), Freedy Johnston followed the tried and true path of many musicians - he went away to college and then dropped out to chase his dreams. A sign in his hometown had a pair of arrows that pointed in either direction towards New York City and San Francisco, and the former became the place Johnston put down new roots, believing so strongly in his path that he sold part of the family farm to finance his music career. Since then, Johnston has come light years beyond his mythic back-story. His second album, "Can You Fly," rightfully earned its way onto many of 1992's best-of lists and earned him accolades from Rolling Stone and Spin. A major label contract followed and subsequent albums were produced by the likes of Butch Vig and T-Bone Burnett. Johnston's compositions are filled with a keen eye for detail, assured melodies sung in his slightly raspy tenor and an elegant simplicity that is akin to John Prine's ability to imbue deeper meaning through subtlety and an ever-present humanity. Johnston has certainly earned his title of a songwriter's songwriter and he continues to make honest and excellent music the old fashioned way here in the new music paradigm.
