When Real Estate's fifth album The Main Thing was released to fairly mixed results, was it time for a reset? In a sense, yes. For band leader Martin Courtney, it was time to get back to songs. After all, without songs, bands are just jamming, right? He set the bar high too, inspired mostly by the 1992 R.E.M. classic Automatic For The People.Besides, you cannot call in a producer like Daniel Tashian without being able to play him songs of exceptionally high standard. For a start, Tashian produced Kacey Musgrave's modern classic Gold Hour, as well as writing a bunch of understated classics with his own band The Silver Seas. Consider then, that the batch of songs landing on the new Real Estate album Daniel were so good that Tashian (who co-writes with many of the artists he produces) only tinkered with them. And in doing so, hopefully gave each one a liberal sprinkling of his magic song fairy dust. “In terms of his input into the songs it was minimal. Daniel was more like a cheerleader in the studio. He's so fun - he'll be jumping around and hype you up - so it's much less daunting in the studio having him around. Graig Alvin mixed the record, and he's also won Grammy's too. We had high-powered people in the room”. Despite all this, Martin sounds surprised at the possibility of creating a classic album, although Daniel has the potential to be just that. What that means, in this day & age, is another thing entirely. Yet the band has been in classic album territory before, in 2014, with Atlas - songs from which brightened up daytime radio, found their way onto the biggest indie streaming playlists - and even landed that record on the Billboard top 40 and UK album charts. A decade on, with the music landscape much altered, the expectations for Daniel are less certain. In Courtney's own words “I know there is a good chance that it will come and go, like everything else these days”. But be assured that if you do become familiar with the record, it will pay you back dividends for a long time to come.So where does a band like Real Estate fit into the modern music industry landscape? Still in the game and getting better, the band's cultural caliber is steadily rising. Support the showGet more related content at: https://www.songsommelier.com/
This week, non-metal September continues with Kacey Musgrave's multi-grammy winning pop country album, the remakably low-key Golden Hour from 2018.
Amy Stroup joins me to talk about her new album "Since Frank," most recent collaborations, and this next phase of her music career. Produced by Chad Copelin (LANY, Broncho, Ben Rector), the 10-song collection covers a wide range of subjects, ultimately settling on what it means to find a way to be okay on the inside. We talk about her love for hiking and seeking the outdoors as a place of comfort and creative inspiration. Since Frank is out Friday, June 23rd on all streaming platforms. Stroup is a prolific collaborator, teaming up to record as both Danger Twins and the playfully retro duo Sugar & The Hi-Lows. With a live show to match her recording prowess, she's earned dates with the likes of Chris Stapleton, Kings of Leon, Kacey Musgrave, and Ingrid Michaelson, as well as festival appearances from Bonnaroo, Austin City Limits to Cayman .
Kelsea Ballerini bought Kacey Musgrave's gorgeous Nashville home, The Rock righting his wrongs, and C'mon Kanye...
My guest today is Daniel Tashian is a Gammy-winning producer, musician, and songwriter who has produced for artists such as Kacey Musgraves, Tenille Townes, Jessie James Decker, A Girl Named Eddie, Trent Dabbs, Emily West, and Keelan Donovan. He has had several sync placements in hit TV shows and movies including the film Our Idiot Brother, Pretty Little Liars, Nashville, Reign, and Scorpion among others. His first #1 Country song was with “Hometown Girl” by Josh Turner co-written with Marc Beeson and Daniel co-produced Kacey Musgrave's critically acclaimed and CMA and Grammy nominated album Golden Hour & also co-wrote 7 of the album's 13 songs. He also has a band called The Silver Seas with Jason Lehning (episode 74) in 1999 doing very well in the U.K. including a gig on the Jules Holland Show. I had great fun recording with these guys a few times at my studio, and I'm happy to have Daniel back on the show to keep talking about songwriting and creating as much as we can in the time that we have. PopaHALLics #80 "Here Come the Kings"We ponder pop mysteries, such as: What's with Tom Hanks' weird accent as Col. Parker in "Elvis"? Why does Tom Cruise personally thank moviegoers at the start of "Top Gun: Maverick"? (He's king of the box office, with more than $1.1 billion in ticket sales for "Maverick.") We also review streaming options "Loot," "The Old Man," "Candy," and public TV's "Seaside Hotel," with a bunch of Danish actors you've never heard of. Theaters:"Elvis." Austin Butler is electrifying as the King in this highly stylized biopic from Baz Luhrmann ("Moulin Rouge," "The Great Gatsby"). That's Hanks under the fat suit and prosthetics as the conniving Colonel."Top Gun: Maverick." Cruise returns as reckless pilot Maverick Mitchell, training young pilots for a dangerous mission in this satisfying sequel to the 1986 film. Miles Teller ("Whiplash"), Jon Hamm, and Jennifer Connolly also star.Streaming:"Loot," Apple TV. In this comedy, Maya Rudolph stars as a billionaire trying to get her life back on track with help from a charitable foundation she funds."The Old Man," FX and Hulu. Decades ago, a CIA agent (Jeff Bridges) went into hiding. Now they're coming for him—which is a big mistake. John Lithgow also stars in this thriller based on the bestselling novel by Thomas Perry."Candy," Hulu. In this limited series based on real events, a 1980s housewife and mother (Jessica Biel) seems to have the perfect life. Then things go very, very wrong."Seaside Hotel," PBS. This gentle feel-good Danish drama with English subtitles follows the staff and guests at a beach hotel by the North Sea in the years between the two world wars.Music:The motion picture soundtrack for Luhrmann's "Elvis" features the real Presley; Butler performing as Presley; and then such modern performers as Eminem, Doja Cat, Kacey Musgrave, and Jack White doing their take on Presley songs. We're back! Happy Sunday, happy morning, happy gay to you all. Hannah tells the story of What Exploded In Her Kitchen and shows off her sick ass Halloween decorations, Danny talks about graduate school burn out, pumpkin cake, and why we shouldn't trust biology after all because it's a big gross bully. We finish it out by discussing whether or not Kacey Musgrave's new divorce album is beautiful and also very very rude to the concept of marriage, if gay men are more into bestiality than not, the seasonal cheer of The Zombies, and how much we hate summer. For communion, Danny's having a chai tea latte and a good slice of cake, Hannah is having a dirty chai (ooo la) with a half pump of pumpkin and a crispy baguette with melted goat cheese.

What's funnier than episode 24? 25. Get it? SpongeBob reference!! We are so funny. In this episode, the hosts tackle some strong subjects: why technology is built to break, why milkshakes DO bring all the boys to the yard, and why two-day weekends just suck. They also talk about some grievances they have with trash cans before getting into the MAAAAAAILLbag. Steven and Connor actually got to see each other over the weekend. A reunion that was nearly 8-months in the making. And they spent it being dudes. Watching MMA fights (which neither of them cared about) and playing poker (which neither of them card about). Burt Bacharach is a living legend. He's written hits sung by Aretha Franklin, Dionne Warwick, Elvis Costello, Dusty Springfield and so many more. With that kind of a resume, he doesn't need to still be working at 92. But he recently found a new muse in collaborator Daniel Tashian. Daniel just won Album of the Year at the Grammy's for co-writing and producing Kacey Musgrave's breakout, Golden Hour. Now he and Burt have teamed on 5 song EP, Blue Umbrella and have even more songs on the way soon. Burt and Daniel connected with Bruce over Skype to talk about their collaboration which started in-studio then migrated to file sharing after the pandemic hit. Jennifer Klein joined us to talk music, Poway, Synanon and so much more. We discussed her organic creation process and capturing her emotions in song. Jennifer shared her experience making her first music video at her Poway home for her song “Lean into Joy”. We also learned about her experience making the songs “So Good” about a special relationship, “Waste of Time” about feeling not appreciated, and “Passing You By” about cell phones and her children. Jennifer also shared the thrill of doing a gig at the Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach. Then we dove deep into Jennifer’s childhood story as a member of the Synanon community. This was a fascinating discussion of living in a commune, being exposed to Synanon’s therapy process called “The Game” and her experience as a child in a group that was considered highly controversial. Jennifer discussed having her head shaved as a child and feeling very different around others when outside the commune. In spite of some of the highly charged negative aspects of Synanon, Jennifer shared many positive experiences as a child in the community. On this week's show Ben and Addy discuss the Grammys, Ben goes off on Kacey Musgrave winning album of the year, Bow Wow gets into a fight with his GF, Jussie Smollet lies catching up to him and Courtney of "Courtney's Corners" drops in to discuss upcoming season.
Kacey Musgrave, the 30-year-old country singer from a town called Golden in Texas is in a golden period right now. Fittingly, it's with her fourth album called Golden hour. She has just swept the Grammy Awards with the album winning Best Country Album and two of her singles winning the Gramaphones as well. What was really impressive is that she also won the Grammy for overall Album of the Year. However, New Zealand's strange aversion to country music continues. This album has been the biggest thing for a year now and yet not here. I went down to the music stations here and no one is playing her.But that's a pity! Atmospheric, light, poppy and distinctly dance-y in places, it's country music but not as you know it, and slow burn is possibly my favourite song of this summer. Even though it was almost released last summer. A delightful fresh album. 8/10
My guest today is Daniel Tashian is a Gammy nominated producer, musician, and song writer who started early in his career with a deal at Elektra Records at 19 years old. He grew up in a musical family. Daniel’s father opened for the Beatles at Shea Stadium. Daniel did a record with T-Bone Burnett but it did not get traction. After his deal ended, Daniel went back to art school to study photography, but soon he was back into music again and started various musical projects: He played guitar on Patty Griffin's album "Flaming Red" He had an alt rock band called "The Umbrellas" that was very influenced by the Soft Boys. He then started a band called The Silver Seas with Jason Lehning (episode 74) in 1999. Their second album did well in the U.K. including a gig on the Jules Holland Show. Daniel had his first #1 Country song with “Hometown Girl” by Josh Turner co-written with Marc Beeson Daniel co-produced Kacey Musgrave’s critically acclaimed and CMA and Grammy nominated album Golden Hour & also co-wrote 7 of the album’s 13 songs. Mike Bloom (@AMikeBloomType) and Mario Lanza (@MarioJLanza) give their thoughts on this week's episode of Saturday Night Live, hosted by Amy Schumer, as Will from America (@WillfromAmerica) calls in to give his take on musical guest Kacey Musgrave.
In episode 26 of Must Go Faster, Ben and Rob go in on Cardi B’s major label debut ‘Invasion of Privacy' (1:30), tackle the overstuffed new record from Jack White (17:30), and talk about the sweet southern vibes in Kacey Musgrave’s ‘Golden Hour’ (25:15). They then switch lanes to cinema, dissecting the tension packed ‘A Quiet Place,’ (30:15) and its in theater experience, before mulling over the HBO documentary ‘Andre the Giant’ (48:30). To wrap up, Rob recommends the raunchy new comedy ‘Blockers’ (1:00:45).
Good news! Eric, Evan and Dan all survived the Irish Tour Bus episode and they are back for a more "normal" episode of the podcast. The gang goes a little bit country and kicks things off with a review of Kacey Musgrave's third studio album Golden Hour, not to be confused with "Golden Shower," which will hopefully be her fourth studio album. Kacey seems to bring a little more pop and a little less outlaw to the table this go-round and everyone finds it to be inoffensive listening. Eric leads a discussion on getting in shape for a healthier beard and shares his "Get Your Ass Into Gear" fitness plan. Step No. 1? Hit "rock bottom." The conversation naturally touches on the important topics of poop weight, boxing tips and yoga boners. Finally, the trio shares their reviews of two different Dogfish Head beers: Lupu-Luau IPA (Eric and Dan) and Flesh & Blood IPA (Evan). Post-Show Notes: Here's some more info on Biotin, the hair growth supplement that we discuss, courtesy of Wikipedia.
This week, we're joined by Doug, the boy with the name we hate the most to talk about Chris Stapleton dominating the sales charts, Kacey Musgrave's upcoming album, Colter Wall coming to Iowa, and King George Strait's best songs and how legends get kicked outta country.
