You likely know longtime Hollywood actor Ed Burns for his turn as Richard Reiben in Saving Private Ryan. Since breaking through with his independent 1995 film The Brothers McMullen, Burns has found success both in front of and behind the camera. But after falling hard for golf during the pandemic, Burns has started to see the world, and his creative outlets, through the lens of the game. In this episode, recorded live from Sullivan County GC, Ed takes host Tom Coyne through the genesis and filming of Finnegan's Foursome, his upcoming Irish golf film shot partially around Carne Golf Links in Belmullet, and digs into his new novel A Kid From Marlboro Road. It's a rare peek behind the curtain at the creative process, as host and guest trade tales from the writer's room to the film set, and Burns relates how scattering his mother's ashes inspired a film about a family both bound and broken by golf. And if you're one of those viewers who scoff at shoddily edited golf sequences, you're in luck—Burns is right there with you. "Bás tionóisceach a fuair criú héileacaptar an R116". The accidental death of four members of the Coast Guard in Co Mayo five years ago, according to a coroner's committee in relation to their case on the night of 14 March 2017. Bás tionóisceach a fuair ceathrar comhaltaí den Gharda Cósta i gCo Mhaigh Eo cúig bliana ó shin, de réir coiste cróinéara maidir lenar bhain dóibh oíche an 14 Márta 2017. The four were killed when a rescue helicopter on their way from the R116 collided with Tor, a small island off the north coast of Mayo. Maraíodh an ceathrar nuair a bhuail héileacaptar tarrthála an R116 a raibh siad ann, nuair a bhuail sé an Tor, oileán beag amach ó chósta thuaidh Mhaigh Eo. The bodies of Captain Dara Fitzpatrick and Captain Mark Duffy were found at sea several days after the disaster but the bodies of the other two, Uncle Operator Paul Ormsby and Uncle Man Ciarán Smith, were never found. Aimsíodh coirp an Chaptaen Dara Fitzpatrick agus an Chaptaen Mark Duffy san fharraige roinnt laethanta tar éis na tubaiste ach ní bhfuarthas riamh coirp na beirte eile, an tOibritheoir Unlais Paul Ormsby agus an Fear Unlais Ciarán Smith. Eight jurors of the coroner's committee announced their verdict after making their case on the case for a short time yesterday afternoon and one and a half hours this morning. D'fhógair ochtar giúróirí an choiste cróinéara a bhfíorasc tar éis dóibh a marana a dhéanamh ar an gcás ar feadh tamaill ghairid tráthnóna inné agus uair an chloig go leith ar maidin inniu. The jury found that all four died accidentally. Chinn an giúiré gur bás tionóisceach a fuair gach aon duine den cheathrar. Paul Ormsby and Ciarán Smith were pronounced dead at another previous coroner's committee hearing. Fógraíodh go hoifigiúil ag éisteacht eile den choiste cróinéara roimhe seo go raibh Paul Ormsby agus Ciarán Smith marbh. The hearing also determined that Dara Fitzpatrick had drowned and that Mark Duffy 's death had been fatal. Cinneadh ag an éisteacht úd freisin gurb amhlaidh a báthadh Dara Fitzpatrick agus gur gortuithe marfacha ba thrúig bháis do Mark Duffy. The coroner's committee was told that the weather around the Bush had been contaminated just before the accident, that some of the aeronautical equipment in the rescue helicopter was faulty or defective, and that the helicopter may not have been put out at all that night. . Dúradh ag an gcoiste cróinéara gur shalaigh an aimsir thart ar an Tor díreach roimh an tionóisc, go raibh cuid den trealamh aerloingseoireachta sa héileacaptar tarrthála lochtach nó easnamhach, agus go mb'fhéidir nár ghá an héileacaptar a chur amach ar chor ar bith an oíche úd. The helicopter was dispatched to assist the landing of another fisherman's helicopter with a severe thumb injury. Cuireadh an héileacaptar amach le cuidiú le héileacaptar eile iascaire ar bhain drochghortú dá ordóg a thabhairt í dtír. The jury recommended that future criteria be set for when a rescue helicopter needs to be dispatched. Mhol an giúiré critéir shoiléire a leagan síos feasta faoi cén uair is gá héileacaptar tarrthála a chur amach. Following today's hearing in Belmullet, Captain Fitzpatrick's father said the coroner's committee had been devastated by the loss of the families of the four lost. I ndiaidh na héisteachta i mBéal an Mhuirthead inniu, dúirt athair an Chaptaen Fitzpatrick gur dóite mar a ghoill an coiste cróinéara ar theaghlaigh an cheathrair a cailleadh. John Fitzpatrick pointed out, however, that the coroner's committee had helped him to get some sense of his daughter's death. Thug John Fitzpatrick le fios, mar sin féin, gur chuidigh an coiste cróinéara leisean meabhair éigin a bhaint as bás a iníne.

The race for this year's Senior, Intermediate and Junior football Championship titles is heating up nicely. Following a hectic weekend of quarter-final action, it's now approaching the business end in each of the title races. In this episode of the Mayo News football podcast we review the weekend's action. Rob Murphy hosts the show and he's joined by Edwin McGreal and Ger Flanagan. The main discussion revolves around the drama-filled quarter-final clashes in the Senior Championship. The debate takes in the game of the weekend, between Westport and Ballina Stephenites, the story of the weekend that was undoubtedly Belmullet, the last-second penalty dramatics in the Knockmore/Ballintubber tie and the rising force that is Garrymore.  The lads then shift the focus away from the club action to reflect on James Horan's recent interview with Midwest and the reaction it has engendered.    Back to on-field matters, the debate moves onto the Intermediate Championship where we hear how Kilmaine, Mayo Gaels, Louisburgh and Ballyhaunis all made it through to the semi-finals. Darren Coen's remarkable scoring feats get a mention and so too do the various relegation play-off matches. We finish with our popular 'Bring Him In' section and some chat on other GAA news of the week.Produced and edited by Ger Duffy Media.Proudly sponsored by Crean Ceramic City.

A series of bad weather and bad growing years in the late 1870s and early 1880s caused what historians now call the "Forgotten Famine" in the west of Ireland. James Hack Tuke, an English banker and Quaker who had been involved in relief efforts during the Great Famine, decided to do something to alleviate the hunger and civil unrest. He raised funds to offer "assisted emigration" to needy families in communities surrounding Blacksod Bay, including townlands on the Belmullet peninsula, townlands such as Ballycroy and Mulranny along the western edge of the bay, and the townlands of Achill Parish, along the southern edge. With steelmaking surging, Cleveland was one of the country's fastest growing industrial centers at the time and drew a significant number of Tuke immigrants. They were drawn to the two neighborhoods most connected with steel--Newburgh, where the steel mills were located, and the Angle, where the raw materials were unloaded. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

On the show this week, we look back on our amazing Pro Am weekend at the magnificent Carne Golf Links in the extreme west of Ireland in Belmullet, Co. Mayo. We talk about Rory's withdrawal from the Olympics due to Zika Virus concerns and how it might cause a domino effect for other big names to withdraw. And then to the big one - The 116th US Open. Dustin Johnson was the winner in sensational fashion, simply bludgeoning the course to death with his missile tee shots. Our own Shane Lowry came agonisingly close but couldn't find the right performance in the final round. We talk it all out and then hit the Rules mess with a vengeance.  And to wrap up we look ahead to the events of the coming week - The Meijer LPGA Classic, The BMW International on The European Tour and The Quicken Loans National from the beast that is Congressional Country Club, where Rory dominated the field in the 2011 US Open.
