Member of Parliament, Paul Galles, came to politics via the unconventional route of priesthood. We talk about this, his zest for life, philosophies he abides by and the want for happiness for all.   In my latest episode, I had the distinct pleasure of sitting down with Paul Galles, a man whose life journey is steered by excitement and a depth of being. Despite leaving the priesthood aged 37, Paul's core values remain in his role as a politician: commitment to faith, community, and the pursuit of happiness for all. Spiritual awakening   As a teenager, we all confront the big questions of life, and that's when Paul's spiritual journey began. Aged 15, he was on a Christian retreat which ignited his connection to God. Coming from a family of mathematicians and scientists, Paul has always been keenly aware of the intersections between faith and reason. Contrary to the notion that religion and science are incompatible, he believes they complement one another. Faith, he asserts, seeks to understand meaning and purpose, while science unravels the mechanics of the universe. His upbringing reinforced the idea that curiosity and belief are not at odds but rather enrich each other, a philosophy that continues to shape his worldview and political approach.   After studying theology, aged 21, he had the opportunity to travel to Brazil to observe the community developed by a Dutch priest who lived there. He was immersed in a vibrant community, "A joyful, lively, young Church that dances and is socially engaged". This experience deepened his faith and ignited a passion for social justice. From Priesthood to Social Advocacy After 11 years as a priest, Paul faced the challenges of remaining celibate, something he feels should not be a requirement for priests. Although he stepped away from the clergy, it was not as a rejection of his spiritual path, but an evolution of it. Transitioning to social work, he joined Young Caritas Luxembourg as a project coordinator, focusing on youth volunteerism in the social sector. His work emphasized the importance of solidarity and community engagement, reflecting his enduring commitment to societal well-being. In 2016, Paul was awarded the prestigious European Citizen Prize for his outstanding contributions to society. This honor, bestowed by the European Parliament, recognizes individuals and organizations that promote European values, solidarity, and cross-border cooperation. For Paul, this was an affirmation of his lifelong mission to serve others, both within and beyond Luxembourg and he dedicated it to the team.  Stepping into the Political Arena Paul's foray into politics was a natural progression of his advocacy work. Joining the Christian Social People's Party (CSV) in 2016, he quickly became a prominent figure, serving as Deputy Secretary-General and later as Vice-President. His electoral success continued through 2017, 2018, and from 2023, where he serves as an Alderman responsible for children and youth in Luxembourg City. Philosophies Rooted in Compassion Central to Paul's ethos is a profound belief in the dignity of every individual and the pursuit of happiness. Inspired by Robert Baden-Powell's words, he emphasizes that true happiness stems not from wealth or career success but from living a life of purpose and love. Paul's commitment extends to environmental justice, social solidarity, and the fight against poverty, with a particular focus on empowering children and youth. A Vision for a Happier Society In my preparation with Paul, he posed some introspective questions that challenge us to reflect on our lives: What are you thankful for? What impresses your heart so deeply? Which wounds of the world do you want to be healed? How do you see the world if you want it to be perfect? These questions, he believes, should be integral to our education system, fostering a generation that values emotional intelligence, creativity, and genuine human connection. Embracing Life's Rhythms Beyond his professional endeavors, Paul finds energy in various passions: a strong network of family and friends, faith, sports, 5Rhythms dance, open-mindedness towards diverse beliefs, astronomy, and philosophy. These interests not only rejuvenate him but also provide a holistic perspective on life, enriching his approach to public service. Paul's story is one of evolution, guided by faith, introspection, and an unwavering commitment to making the world a better place. His journey from priesthood to politics serves as an inspiring reminder that our paths may change, but the core values of compassion, justice, and love remain steadfast. For a deeper insight into Paul's philosophies and his vision for a happier society, tune in to our full conversation on RTL Today. We do also talk about the Council of Europe but this conversation will be a larger one when I interview Ambassador Ragnhildur Arnljósdóttir in a few weeks time. www.paulgalles.lu https://www.linkedin.com/in/paul-galles-b6897429?utm_source=share&utm_campaign=share_via&utm_content=profile&utm_medium=ios_app https://www.facebook.com/share/19UyFpEioy/?mibextid=wwXIfr

Jean-Marc Lieberherr examines Jean Monnet's vital role in securing US arms for Britain and France during the Second World War and in driving international cooperation. A committed internationalist, long before becoming one of the founding fathers of the EU, Jean Monnet played a crucial role in enabling cooperation between countries in two world wars. As a member of the Executive Committee of the Allied Maritime Transport Council during the First World War, he helped coordinate shipping between the Allied powers of France, Great Britain, Italy and, from 1918, the US, before becoming the Deputy Secretary General of the League of Nations in 1919. During the subsequent world conflagration, , Monnet, trusted by Winston Churchill and Charles de Gaulle, coordinated arms procurement from the US through the Anglo-French Co-Ordinating Committee, the British Purchasing Committee and the Combined Production and Resources Board. According to economist John Maynard Keynes, Monnet's work shortened that war by one year. After 1945, Monnet continued seeking internationalist solutions, connecting the French and German markets under the European Coal and Steel Community. Seeing how the principles of cooperation could be applied more broadly, he advocated for a European Defence Community during the Korean War. While this attempt at European defence integration failed, his work inspired the founding treaties of the EU. He became the first ‘Honorary Citizen of Europe' in 1976. Jean-Marc Lieberherr is the founding chairman of the Jean Monnet Institute (JMI), which is devoted to promoting Monnet's historical heritage. Before creating the JMI in 2021, he had a career with large international groups such as LVMH, Unilever and Rio Tinto. Further Reading Jean Monnet, Memoirs (London: Harper Collins, 1978). Over the past three years, several seemingly frozen conflicts (Sudan, Russia/Ukraine, Israel/Gaza, Armenia/Azerbaijan, etc) have broke out into hot conflicts that are challenging the current international order. There is, however, one of the longest standing potential flashpoints that has not entered the fray, but is listed as one issue that could embroil the world. That is the unresolved issue of cross-strait relations between the People's Republic of China (PRC) and the Republic of China (ROC), also known as the island of Taiwan. For more than seventy years, the question of who controls Taiwan has simmered just under the surface of geopolitical tensions, as the PRC continues to claim control of Taiwan, while recognizing that reunification is necessary (the juxtaposition here is insightful). The ROC continues to maintain that the political status of Taiwan can only be decided by the people of Taiwan, who currently support maintaining the status quo (having their own democracy, while not openly trying to claim full independence). In this episode we speak with Director General Charles Liao of the Taiwan Economic and Cultural Office in Boston. As the US and Taiwan do not maintain official relations, they do not maintain an embassy or series of consulates throughout the US, so these offices act as the representatives of the ROC in the US. Listen to gain insights into the current state of cross-strait relations and how the ROC views their relationship with the PRC. This becomes increasingly important as the PRC continues to ramp up military drills surrounding Taiwan, increasing the chances for a miscalculation or accident that can lead to all out war. In an age where military might has returned to the global stage as a way to resolve conflicts, the question of Taiwan and how to encourage a diplomatic resolution remains one of the most important of the day.As mentioned in the podcast introduction, if you are interested in learning more about what foreign policy might look like as the United States enters a second term for President Trump, please watch our conversation with Dan Negrea of the Atlantic Council and co-Author of "We Win, They Lose: Republican Foreign Policy and the New Cold War". Following the Cold War, the US and Russia entered into a series of arms control treaties that gave the world hope that, one day, nuclear weapons may be a thing of the past. But as tensions have risen between the two nuclear powers over Ukraine and other irritants, Russia has been abandoning these agreements. Most recently, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that Moscow would walk away from the last major arms treaty with the US, New START, in 2026.  What does all this mean for the prospect of nuclear war, and what can the United States and its allies do to get arms control back on track?  On this Munk Dialogue, we're joined by someone who has been at the very centre of international arms control efforts. Rose Gottemoeller was the Deputy Secretary General of NATO from 2016 to 2019. In Singapore, the silent struggle of single mothers facing poverty often goes unnoticed. In a society known for its affluence, these women confront unique challenges that are deeply intertwined with societal norms and government policies. In the opening episode of the fourth season, host Liang Kaixin, Associate Director at the Institute of Policy Studies and a former journalist, engages in an in-depth discussion with two key figures in the field: Carrie Tan, Member of Parliament (MP) at Nee Soon GRC and founder of Daughters of Tomorrow, and Elizabeth Quek, Programme Manager at AWARE who managed the Support Housing and Enable (S.H.E.) project. They delved into the multifaceted issues faced by single mothers in Singapore, especially those who are unwed and divorced, and explore the complex intersection of poverty, single motherhood, and societal stigma. This episode sheds light on the economic hardships, support systems, housing challenges, and the impact of societal perceptions on these women. It also explores recent policy shifts aimed at providing better support to unwed mothers. Find out more about single parenthood in Singapore: AWARE (December 2016): Single Parents' Access to Public Housing Findings from AWARE's Research Project The Straits Times (25 March 2023): Struggles of mothers, lower-income women highlighted in new book The Straits Times (9 March 2022): Budget debate: MPs call for better support for single parents, low-income families About our guests: Carrie Tan, Member of Parliament; Founder, Daughters of Tomorrow Carrie Tan is recognised for her dual role as the founder of Daughters of Tomorrow (DOT), a charity aiding underprivileged women in Singapore, and as a MP of Nee Soon GRC. Her journey in politics is a natural progression of her commitment to community service, emphasising the representation of marginalised voices and advocating for inclusive policymaking. DOT's approach complements existing workforce-related agencies, connecting volunteers and community resources to each woman individually. By understanding their day-to-day constraints, the organisation provides tailored coaching and assistance, helping women achieve regular and sustained employment. In her political role, Carrie Tan continues this ethos, advocating for the representation of marginalised voices and inclusive policy-making. Her work spans critical areas including women's empowerment, mental health, and community care. Carrie has proposed initiatives like "Carefare" to support low-income full-time caregivers and tirelessly advocates for better mental health support in education and healthcare. In her constituency of Nee Soon South, she has established programmes like the Mental Well-being Committee and a Diaper Support Programme for the elderly, alongside an online show highlighting children's perspectives, all reflective of her dedication to mindful parenting and enhancing community well-being. Elizabeth Quek, Program Manager, AWARE Elizabeth Quek has had experience in the social service sector for over 15 years, with a focus on supporting single parents. As a Programme Manager at AWARE, she played a pivotal role in the S.H.E Project (Support, Housing and Enablement), a research-based service offering stable housing and transformational support for low-income families led by single mothers. This initiative, with its pilot program running from 2018 to 2021, aimed to provide these families with a chance to stabilise their lives and transition out of poverty. The S.H.E Project, addressing findings from AWARE's 2016 study on single parents' access to public housing, provided long-term housing stability, unlike typical transitional housing programmes. From July 2019 to April 2020, Elizabeth also managed the Community Childminding Network, part of Daughters of Tomorrow, focusing on building community support among mothers. This initiative created a "kampong of trust" to address childminding needs, allowing more women to work and support their families. Since Russia began its full-scale invasion of Ukraine a year ago, we've seen some surprising military, diplomatic, and legal developments in the war. Ukrainian forces have proven remarkably strong, and the Ukrainian people have demonstrated utter determination against a Russian leadership and military that have drastically underperformed. Meanwhile, in Washington, the U.S. has developed its own response to Russia's illegal invasion, which includes assembling an alliance to support Ukraine and providing billions in humanitarian aid and weapons, issuing massive sanctions against Russian banks and individuals, and passing new laws to prosecute those who commit grave crimes in Ukraine through U.S. courts. For an expert view of how the U.S. has responded to the conflict and what comes next, Just Security and the Reiss Center on Law and Security at NYU Law have re-assembled a stellar panel. These legal and diplomatic all-stars first put their heads together a year ago during an NYU panel that happened to fall on the day of the invasion. Dan Baer is the Acting Director of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace's Europe Program and the former U.S. Ambassador to the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe. Tess Bridgeman is Just Security's Co-Editor-in-Chief, a Senior Fellow & Visiting Scholar at the Reiss Center on Law and Security, and a former Deputy Legal Advisor at the National Security Council. And Rose Gottemoeller is a Lecturer at Stanford University and the former Deputy Secretary General of NATO. Co-hosting this special episode are Just Security Fellow Paras Shah and Senior Washington Editor Viola Gienger. Show Notes: Dan Baer (@danbbaer)Tess Bridgeman (@bridgewriter) Viola Gienger (@ViolaGienger)Rose Gottemoeller (@Gottemoeller)Paras Shah (@pshah518)Reiss Center on Law and Security at NYU Law (@RCLS_NYU)Just Security's Russia-Ukraine War archiveReiss Center's What You Need to Know: Unpacking the Law in Russia's War Against Ukraine  Reiss Center and Just Security's February 2022 event The Russia-Ukraine Crisis: Navigating Law, Diplomacy, and Force50:50 NYU's American Journalism Online ProgramMusic: “The Parade” by “Hey Pluto!” from Uppbeat: https://uppbeat.io/t/hey-pluto/the-parade (License code: 36B6ODD7Y6ODZ3BX)

Avoiding Armageddon: Rose Gottemoeller on the Potential for Nuclear War

Last month, President Biden warned of “nuclear Armageddon” as tensions with Russia reached their highest point since the Cuban Missile Crisis. While the Biden administration appears to be working around the clock to prevent this kind of nuclear catastrophe, the American public has been largely kept in the dark about how the United States would respond if Russia used a tactical nuclear weapon against Ukraine.  To help us make sense of all of this, and to walk us through what options are on the table for the United States to de-escalate tensions with Russia, we are joined by none other than Rose Gottemoeller. Rose was the chief negotiator of New START, the last remaining strategic arms control treaty between the two nuclear-armed countries. With the treaty set to expire in 2026, and recent news of Russia delaying talks on a potential New START renewal, is there hope for the easing of tensions via diplomacy? Or, is a new arms race to out-compete Russia (and other nuclear-armed countries like China) the answer to avoid nuclear war? Rose Gottemoeller is the Steven C. Házy Lecturer at Stanford University's Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies and its Center for International Security and Cooperation. Rose recently served as Deputy Secretary General of NATO and the Under Secretary for Arms Control and International Security at the U.S. State Department. She is the author of Negotiating the New START Treaty (2021). To listen to more episodes or learn more about None Of The Above, go to www.noneoftheabovepodcast.org.
