Between 1984 and 1986, to celebrate 100 years since it was dedicated, the Statue of Liberty underwent a multi-million-dollar restoration project. The statue was a gift to the USA by France, to celebrate 100 years of American independence. The project also restored the former immigration processing centre on the nearby Ellis Island, which became a National Museum of Immigration. The entire project was funded by private investment. We start with Y2K as the real end of history (and my confession that peak humanity was 1999 because that is when The Matrix came out), move through the irony Niebuhr would have recognized on sight, name the three threads of authoritarianism Trump has been weaving — theocratic nationalist, technocratic libertarian, conspiracist — and turn toward what Scott is actually constructing: a public theology grounded in the dialectic of universal dignity and particular bonds, rooted in Bonhoeffer's prison poem, pointed toward a New Jerusalem whose gates are never shut. A controversial antisemitism bill that opponents say would criminalise criticism of Israel. A small town reubilds its long-lost Statue of Liberty, a symbol of freedom, to help it rediscover its identity. And the story of France's first female general. French MPs will vote next week on a bill that aims to tackle "new forms" of antisemitism, which has spiralled since the 7 October 2023 Hamas attacks on Israel triggered the war in Gaza. Among other measures, the legislation would create a new offence punishing incitement to "the destruction of a state". Critics claim the bill is aimed at silencing criticism of Israel and more than 600,000 people have signed a petition to push MPs to reject it. He also talks about how nurses and doctors made huge advancements in health during this time period because they were able to study so many patients. So much is happening so quickly to the National Park Service. There have been staff reductions, hiring freezes, spending freezes, orders from the Interior Secretary to make sure that visitors find national parks welcoming, no matter what it takes.  Every week seems to bring something new, and quite frankly dire to the National Park Service. Most recently we've heard about the loss of about 60 employees from the agency's Alaska regional office, and there are concerns the Trump administration is going to push through even greater reductions in force for the Park Service. Her response was hilarious, noting that if it wasn't for America, the French would be speaking German—referencing World War II. 6:20pm- According to research from the Heritage Foundation's Oversight Project, former President Joe Biden signed dozens of executive orders with an “autopen”—raising questions about the legitimacy of those actions. Did Biden know what he was signing? Earlier this year, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) revealed that during a closed-door meeting Biden had no recollection of signing an executive order that effectively froze new liquid natural gas export permits. While aboard Air Force One this weekend, President Donald Trump said that Biden's autopen pardons should be “null and void.” 6:35pm- In a recent interview, “Captain America: Brave New World” star Anthony Mackie called out the “death of the American male.” He explained: “They have literally killed masculinity in our homes, in our communities for one reason or another.
