The Australian 2019-20 bushfires saw Amy Blain and her young family trapped on the beach at Bermagui in New South Wales. Amy had always been concerned about environmental issues, but that moment of "living in a nightmare" was an epiphany for her. Returning safely from her bushfire/Bermagui experience, Amy decided it was time to take her activism to a new level and now she chairs Canberra's Peoples Climate Assembly. Climate Conversations made contact with Amy via the group's treasurer, John Smith, during a webinar organized by Anjali Sharma, to talk about the "Duty of Care" and the Bill that is being taken to the Senate by Australian Capital Territory Senator, David Pocock. In this episode, we talk with both Amy and John about when and why the assembly came together, what it's achieved and what's ahead. Beyond the group's website, people can engage with the group through its Facebook page and via Instagram. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/robert-mclean/message

Its the hallmark of any remarkable angler to have the ability to fish your local waters well, and to many people around Australia, that means Saltwater Estuaries and bread and butter species. Of these highly accessible species, none can be as challenging as the humble Bream... Overlooked by some who feel they are above them, yet Bream have the ability to embarrass those same people by outsmarting even the stealthiest angler. On the flip side, there are those that know and understand that these incredibly slow growing and smart fish offer everything that defines saltwater fly fishing. To fish for Bream well, is a lifelong journey and on this show we talk to 2 of the best in the country, James Caves and Brook Swanton. These two guys live miles apart (James, Bermagui and Brook, Gold Coast) and both live in some of the most pressured waters in Australia, be it population, commercial pressure or pollution, the bream mentioned in this show are hard earned.  On this show we aim to inspire you to get out and give these challenging fish a go... light rods and leaders, pin point accurate casts, tailing fish in a few inches of water, topwater and deep structure... the humble Bream is only unrated by those who either struggle to catch them or are yet to realise they have everything we travel for right on your doorstep.  This show is brought to you by Nervous Water, Kettafly Apparel, Power-Pole and Beast Brushes.

In this episode of The Remarkable Project Jay talks to well-travelled chef and local food delivery business owner Kelly Eastwood about being resourceful in the face of adversity, why personal connection is the ground zero of community and organisational culture, and how care is key to making customers feel crucial. After 14 years of working as a Private Chef to Royalty, Russian Oligarchs and many more on the Forbes list, Kelly Eastwood left the high seas and transferred her skills to Television. Working as a Home Economist and TV Food Producer for shows such as Masterchef, MKR, Better Homes and Gardens and The Great Australian Bake Off. The River Cottage Australia first brought Kelly to the Far South Coast of NSW, and it was there that she started her own business, Eastwood's Deli and Cooking School in picturesque Bermagui, hosting cooking lessons, pop-up dinners and coastal private catering events.During the 2020 bushfires Eastwood's was converted into a Disaster Relief Kitchen for a not-for-profit organisation called World Central Kitchen, where Kelly and a team of 270 volunteers output almost 50,000 meals over a seven week period, feeding firefighters, evacuees and displaced locals in surrounding communities. Soon after the fires were done along came COVID-19 restrictions, forcing Eastwood's to rethink their business model. Now their focus is on catering, cooking lessons and a much loved and ever growing take-home meal delivery service, which operates weekly from Pambula to Batemans Bay.Remarkable Quotes“We've all made lots of friends through our customers, which is just lovely.”“Even if it's just one person and it's 15 kilometres down the track, return trip, we still will deliver to that person because it's a service that we want to offer.”“For me, it's keeping a quality consistent, making sure that our customers are always happy with what we're delivering.”Connect with KellyExplore the Eastwood's websiteFollow their InstagramThank youCredit David Rogers for the photography

In this episode, Bro speaks to Trapman from Bermagui. The commercial fishing industry is one of the most complicated and often misunderstood industries. The idea behind Trapman Bermagui is to try and dispel some of the myths and misconceptions that exist and to give people more understanding of what is involved in the everyday life of a commercial fisherman. I would also like to bridge the gap between commercial and amateur fishermen, by sharing some of my knowledge and experience to help create a more sustainable and enjoyable ocean for everyone. My dad has been a commercial fisherman since the 1950s, line fishing kingys and snapper and trapping out of Sydney. I started life sleeping in a fishbox on dad’s boat, which I much preferred to daycare. I spent all my school holidays working on boats with other professional fishermen, learning about fishing and diving. At 15 I became the youngest commercial fisherman in Sydney. When I started, I was line fishing, trapping lobsters and mullet netting during the autumn season.  I bought my first tinny with money I made selling fish to my school teachers. At 18 I upgraded from the tinny to a 6m boat called Princess (named after my dog). A 32ft swift craft boat (Zoe) that I bought next turned out to be a lemon, so I traded that one for a 7m predator boat which was dark blue and creatively called Blue Boat. I had Blue Boat for 16 years. I mostly fished Kingfish as well as trapping for lobster and fish, and sharks. I would travel up and down the coast a week at a time to break up the boredom, fishing out of Port Stephens, Culburra, Seal Rocks, South West Rocks and Bermagui. In 2000 new fishing regulations were introduced. Lobster quotas were applied along with shark trip limits and mullet netting was banned in Botany Bay. These new regulations meant a big drop in income so I bought a line east and chased Yellowfin and Albacore to try to make up for it. By this stage I had become one of the top commercial fishermen in Sydney. In 2007 I bought the Marilyn M Sailfish (named after my mum). Shortly after, I met my wife and we decided to leave Sydney for a quieter life. Opting for a seachange, we moved to Bermagui in 2012. Since moving to Bermagui I have mostly focused on fish and lobster trapping, along with a little King fish and tuna fishing. I recently sold Marilyn M and upgraded to the Narissa J which is now moored at Bermagui Fishermen’s Wharf. Moving my fishing business to Bermagui has been a huge learning curve. There have been many challenges, like learning new fishing grounds and the biggest one, the inconsistency with king fishing. It is very seasonal which is hard to get used to. Snapper is also inconsistent, although the shark fishing here on the South Coast has been good. Overall, fishing in Bermagui I find you catch more quantity but the quality is not always there. Commercial fishing is a really tough industry. The biggest issues I find as a fisherman are things like inconsistent fish means inconsistent pay, fishing is completely weather dependent and seasonal, the seals here are crazy. It is tough physical work which means my hands burn and hurt and my body is always aching, plus there is constant anxiety /stress, the regulations and licensing systems are always challenging us, my clothes stink and so do I. But of course, there are some good things about the job too. I get to be out on the ocean, part of nature. I see things that most people never will, such as the majesty of great white sharks swimming beneath the boat, whales breaching at sunrise and the company of dolphin pods as I work. I get to do what I love for a living and live in a great part of the world. It’s also really rewarding to see people eating and enjoying my catch. It feels good when my plans work out and I get a good catch.  There is also great camaraderie here amongst the community. The commercial fishermen work together and help each other out. There is also a lot of support from local businesses and the people in this small town. Website: http://trapmanbermagui.com

Fans of the show will be pleased to learn that West’s scene-stealing border collie Digger has also made the journey and is busy learning how to behave around busy city roads and make the most of a suburban backyard. “I don’t think he’s super happy but I still get him out and give him plenty of walks,” West says. “And we’re lucky, we live near Merri Creek, so there are plenty of places where he can get off lead.”Since River Cottage Australia finished filming in 2015, the 36-year-old advocate of sustainable farming has been dabbling with television and radio jobs, as well as doing cooking demonstrations and tells Linda he is in the process of writing a book. West says living sustainably begins with cooking at home. Start by eliminating processed and packaged foods and prepare fresh meals from scratch. This week Linda Ross talks to Paul West, the star of Lifestyle Channel's (now SBS) series River Cottage Australia, who has swapped his bucolic Tilba home on the NSW South Coast for a city life in Thornbury, in Melbourne’s inner north. The chef-turned-sustainable-farmer married his partner Alicia in 2016 and moved south, along with their young sons, Otto and Bowie. Then, try growing your own vegetables – start small with some herbs or salad greens in a pot.Ultimately, though, the move to Melbourne is a temporary one with the family planning to move back to their house in Bermagui, NSW, when Otto starts primary school.Paul will be a special guest at the Queensland Garden Show 13-15th July 2018 on the Sunshine Coast (http://www.qldgardenexpo.com.au) where he will be on stage talking about his sustainable life goals.

Michael’s rock balancing art stops the world dead, and in the same way that breathing just happens, your mind automatically asks, "How the hell does he do that?" The gallery of photo and videos on his Gravity Glue website is extraordinary. Canadian born Michael has been on the Far South Coast of New South Wales over summer, bringing his brand of land art to Picnic Point and Goalen Head, a magic bit of coastline between Bermagui and Tathra. His work defies gravity, at least how the rest of us understand gravity, but Michael seems to have an ability to tap into and read this invisible earth force - something he describes as "gravity glue". How does he do it? You are about to find out! A shout out to those who support local story telling – Julie Rutherford Real Estate Bermagui, the Bega Valley Commemorative Civic Centre, and Kiah Wilderness Tours. Thanks for listening. Podcast 20 features an extraordinary group of people who have just started meeting regularly to support each other through challenges and troubles that most would find impossible. This group of a dozen or more grandparents are raising their grandchildren and great grandchildren. The parents of these kids have deserted them for a range of reasons and these Grandparents – the parents of the parents are the safety net. Karen Thomas and Vanessa Bragg from PlayAbility in Bega have bought these families together. PlayAbility provide early intervention services for families who have young children with a disability or developmental delay. You are about to meet people that carry an interesting range of emotions - sadness and despair, mixed with joy, humour, and love. What stood out to me as I listened to these stories is that these people walk among us, carrying the most heartbreaking experiences, stories that have gone unheard, told by people who haven’t been recognised or supported – until now. I’ve beeped out the names of the kids to respect their privacy. During Local Government Week recently, Eurobodalla Shire Council made space for the youth of the shire. Senior students from Carroll College and St Peter’s Anglican College at Broulee, and Batemans Bay High School were given time to address Council – including Mayor, Liz Innes and Deputy Mayor, Anthony Mayne. One of the Shire’s Federal MP’s was also taking notes – Member for Gilmore, Anne Sudmalis. Courtney Fryer from Carroll College, used the opportunity to advocate for young people living with physical and mental disability. Harrison O’Keefe from Batemans Bay High, made a great point around youth engagement –“show them what they are missing out on” and he has an idea to do just that. While Pippi Sparrius from St Peter’s presented some surprising stats around teenage pregnancy in the Eurobodalla. Keen to give the students a ‘real council meeting’ experience, Cr Innes was watching the clock, with Courtney, Harrison, and Pippi given five minutes each. For support or more info about the issues raised in this podcast check in with the Eurobodalla youth services directory or drop by one of the Shire’s popular Youth Cafes in Narooma and Batemans Bay. About Regional is supported by the financial contributions of members, including Jill Howell, Max Wilson, Sue MacKinnon, Geoff Berry, and Four Winds at Bermagui – who have just released the program for next Easter’s festival, 60 artists, 10 ensembles, 26 performances, 10 stunning locations, over 5 days starting in late March 2018. For almost 11 years Gabrielle has been the manager of the town’s Women’s Resource Centre. With long service leave in her sails Gabrielle took off for Malawi in South East Africa, a country of 18 million people bordered by Zambia, Tanzania, and Mozambique. There are no banana lounges or pina coladas with this getaway, Gabrielle was there for two months as a mentor to an artist’s co-operative. A basket maker herself, Gabrielle had to put her art on the back seat, it was her management, admin, and leadership skills that were put to work with ‘People of the Sun’. I got talking to Gabrielle about this experience of a life time just a few days after she returned. The ride from Bermagui to Merimbula is probably the best ride I've done around the Sapphire Coast. It was a very enjoyable mix of open countryside, twisty roads through bushland, wide rivers, and coastal scenery. For a map of the route, and more details, see this ride on the A Good Ride web site at http://agoodride.tv/rides/31
