Bert Jacobs is the co-founder of the $150 million lifestyle brand Life is Good. When he and his brother John started the company in 1994, they had $78 in their pockets, lived out of their van, and sold t-shirts on the streets of Boston. It has been over 30 years since they sold their first t-shirt, but Bert and John championed the same mission: to spread the power of optimism. On their journey, they've been inspired by a vibrant community of resilient optimists—people from all walks of life who identify deeply with the brand and who constantly demonstrate the depth and meaning behind the three simple words, “life is good.” Bert joins Google to discuss how to develop an optimistic mindset and tips on building a vibrant community and a brand that will stand the test of time. Jacobs was bedreven in tactiek en people management.

LIFE IS GOOD. Being an optimist instead of a pessimist is a choice. You can wake up each day and focus on what’s wrong. Or you can choose to be grateful. Whatever you focus on grows. So if you are spending your time on things that make you unhappy, they will take over. But if you can cultivate gratitude, simplicity, and optimism, that’s what your life will become. Choose happiness. For this Five Minute Friday, I revisited a conversation I had with Bert Jacobs, founder of the Life is Good Company, where he shared a few of his ten Superpowers that are surprisingly simple and timeless. Bert has appeared on CNN’s Tips from the Top, CNBC’s Business Nation, and The Donny Deutch Show. Life Is Good has been featured in the New York Times, on the cover of Inc Magazine, and on NBC’s The Today Show. Bert is the second youngest of six siblings from Needham, MA. He credits his mother with teaching his brother and him to face the bumps in the road with a smile. The Jacobs brothers see simplicity, humility, and a sense of humor as the three keys to Life is good’s continued success. How Optimism Turned $200 Into $100 Million, w/ Life is Good CEO Bert Jacobs

Life isn’t easy. Life isn’t perfect. But life is good. That’s the motto that has propelled Life is Good - the lifestyle clothing brand that celebrates optimism - from a $200 initial investment in 1989 to a $100M company today. This week our guest is Life is Good co-founder and CEO Bert Jacobs. In the interview, Bert shares how he and his co-founder/brother John conceived of the company, and why placing optimism at the core of the brand has helped it reach millions of people. As Bert tells it, before it was ever a company or a t-shirt, “Life is Good” was a spirit personified by Bert and John's mother, Joan, an eternal optimist who taught her children to turn the music up, enjoy the moment, and always remember to focus on the good things in life. Ultimately, the pair took her message to heart, and made the spread of positive energy their lives work. In addition to the brand's uplifting message, Life is Good achieves spreads good vibes by donating 10% of net profits to the Life is Good Kids Foundation, and by holding events like the Life is Good music festival. Bert was an incredibly honest, good-natured, and fascinating guest. He told us why he believes our disposition determines our happiness, why employee engagement is so important to his organization, why work/life is balance is an inherently flawed concept, and why the people who have the hardest road ahead of them tend to gravitate toward the Life is Good brand the most. Speaking to Bert put us in a great mood and taught us a lot about leadership and business, and we think listening to him will have the same effect.   Recommended Reading Life is Good: The Book by Bert & John Jacobs  Links Lifeisgood.com Life is Good on LinkedIn @LifeIsGood on Twitter @LifeIsGoodCo on Instagram Join our Exclusive Facebook Group! Maybe you’ve struggled with workaholism, food addiction, substance abuse, or someone you know has. We have to first define what addiction is in order to define and know how to create a life that is addicted to a good life. The first step of addiction is “We admitted we were powerless over our addiction that our lives had become unmaneageable.” Years back I remember sitting in a two day conference in Napa Valley about Success and Entrepreneurship. I sat next to a guy name Bert Jacobs. Over the course of two days I learned a ton about his company ‘Life is Good’ and his mindset behind the companie’s success. Making choices that are for the highest good create a good life.   DAILY UNIVERSAL LAW: Today we align with The Law of Perfect Health. This Universal Law is the axiom that whatever is going on within your health is the mental equivalent of what is going on within consciousness, individually and collectively. When you get out of alignment with Mother Nature and Universal Laws we experience ill-health. Within you is a born intelligence and an innate healer, capable of restoring harmony, well being and vibrant vitality. When the body is bogged down with toxins and negative emotions it can’t function properly. From a spiritual perspective, dis-ease is Spirit (your higher self) communicating that individually and culturally we are out of harmony with life. Symptoms within the body, such as poor health and illness are the relative and inverted experience of our use of Universal Energy.  From an absolute perspective, the truth is that you are an eternal immortal spiritual being. You are not your body, you have a body. From a spiritual perspective, the only true disease is amnesia. However, if we choose to experience wellness we must align with nature’s way.   DAILY SPIRITUAL PRACTICE: Go within, quiet your mind, and begin to ask your highest self how you can serve for the highest good today.   DAILY CHALLENGE: Stop handing your power over to things that will bound you energetically.   LIVE YOUR TRUTH, DR. MWR Life Inspiration Ambassador & Napoleon Hill Foundation Certified Instructor, Tom Cunningham (too tall), interviews Life is Good Co-Founder John Jacobs. In 1994, John Jacobs and his brother Bert with a combined sum of just $78 in the bank, John and his brother, Bert, o?cially launched Life is Good. Today, Life is Good is a $100 million dollar clothing company with one simple, unifying mission: to spread the power of optimism. Life is good focuses on forging meaningful, emotional connections, and relies heavily on its community of optimists to build its brand. Because Life is Good considers kids its ultimate source for inspiration, the company is committed to helping kids overcome poverty, violence, and severe medical challenges, through its nonpro?t foundation, The Life is Good Playmakers. A minimum of ten percent of annual net pro?ts is donated to the Founda3on, which has raised over $11 million to date and positively impacts the lives of more than 100,000 children a day. Bert, John, and Life is Good are living proof that "Optimism can take you anywhere.” John is the youngest of six siblings from Needham, MA. His credits his mother with teaching his brother and him to face life’s bumps in the road with a smile. The Jacobs brothers see simplicity, humility and a sense of humour, as the three keys to Life is Good's continued success. http://www.lifeisgood.com/home
