The premiere of David Hare's play Plenty at the National Theatre in 1978 marked him out as one of the UK's most skilled and socially conscious playwrights. Plenty transferred to Broadway, Hare adapted it into a film starring Meryl Streep, and in the following years he became known as a writer for whom the political and the personal are deeply entwined. Often referred to as Britain's pre-eminent ‘state of the nation playwright', his plays in the 1980s examined a wide range of social and political issues, including the Church of England in Racing Demon, the judiciary in Murmuring Judges and party politics in The Absence of War. He tackled international geopolitics in Via Dolorosa - about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict - and the invasion of Iraq with Stuff Happens and the Vertical Hour. Equally skilled as a screenwriter, his film screenplays for The Hours and The Reader saw him twice nominated for Academy Awards. David Hare was knighted in 1998 for ‘services to theatre'. He talks to John Wilson about how his lower-middle class background and family life in Bexhill-on-Sea stimulated his imagination. He pays tribute to some of the most formative people in his life: his Cambridge university tutor, the Welsh writer and academic Raymond Williams, whose maxim that ‘culture is ordinary' had a profound effect on his life as a writer; the actress Kate Nelligan, who starred in several of Hare's plays, including Plenty; and his wife Nicole Farhi who, he says, transformed his idea of himself and who inadvertently helped inspire one of his best loved plays, Skylight. During this casual and compelling conversation, he discusses the incredible actors he had the chance to work with, why production design and cinematography were incredibly important to recreate the Paris Peace Conference, and why he (respectfully) declined to work on Star Wars with George Lucas.

Hours after Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre was expelled from the House of Commons for calling Prime Minister Justin Trudeau “a wacko” and refusing to withdraw his comments, both leaders' parties had issued fundraising emails pointing to the incident on Parliament Hill and asking for donors for more cash. Fundraising is a huge part of what political parties do, it keeps their operations going and builds their war chest for the next election campaign. It also helps to buy them votes. The more money they have, the more they can spend on advertising and organization, and the more votes they can get. Since the end of the per-vote subsidy, parties are now dependent on public donations and those who donate tend to be more partisan and more ideologically extreme. So what does that mean for our politics? On this episode of “It's Political,” we take a look at party financing. First, we'll take a look at the current rules, how they evolved and who they give voice to. Then, we'll head up to the Hill to get some MPs' views on the topic, before finally sitting down with three former party operatives to break down the perceived challenges of our current system and how it could be reformed to reduce the influence of those with deeper pockets. Some of the clips this week were sourced from the House of Commons, CPAC, the CBC, the Liberal Party of Canada, the NDP, the Conservative Party of Canada, the National Citizens Coalition's YouTube channel, CNBC, WTOL, and PBS, This episode of “It's Political” was produced by Althia Raj and Michal Stein. Joy SpearChief-Morris assisted with production. Prompted by the ongoing genocidal campaigns effecting the people of Palestine, Chris and Sylvie decided to tackle an animated documentary from 2017 that endeavored to portray the Israel-West Bank Barrier in a nuanced perspective based on an outsider's perspective. It failed. Miserably. While visually it stuns through a masterful mixing of animation techniques by Alberta based filmmaker Cam Christiansen, as an adaptation of a self-serving, close-minded monologue written by British playwright David Hare back in 2009, its biases and outdated views are apparent and frustrating. James Cameron-Wilson found Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes confusing and poorly made, though the new #1 helped box office rise 54% with a £5.4m take. Nor was he as enthusiastic as many critics about Saltburn, Emerald Fennell's darkly comic tale of aristocratic mayhem, though he did like Rosamund Pike's and Richard E Grant's performances, as well as the score. However, he loved the new NT Live screening of David Hare's play Skylight with Carey Mulligan and Bill Nighy, which he found insightful, funny and profound. Born in the south of France, she designed for various labels before teaming up with Stephen Marks in the early 1970s to establish French Connection as a worldwide clothing brand. She launched her own label Nicole Farhi in 1982 and was one of the biggest names in UK fashion for three decades. Nicole started studying sculpture whilst still in the fashion world, and staged her first solo exhibition in 2014. She has been married to the playwright David Hare since 1992. Nicole recalls the influence of her glamourous and well-dressed aunt Visa who sparked Nicole's early interest in fashion by taking her to the Parisian couture shows. Meeting her partner Stephen Marks proved to be a major turning point and they went on to found two successful fashion labels together. But alongside her life as a designer, Nicole also had a passion for sculpture which had been ignited seeing the work of Giacometti at the Fondation Maeght in the south of France. 400 years after the publication of William Shakespeare's First Folio, five writers are each asked to pick a speech from one of the Folio's plays, tell it what they think it means, and what it means to them. This time, award-winning playwright, screenwriter and director David Hare chooses a speech by Macbeth in Act 5, Scene 3 of the play. David tells us how Shakespeare perfected his gift for the lone monologue to help reveal what is going on inside a character's head. In Act 5, Scene 3 of Macbeth, the lead character waits for news of an English army which has been assembled in an attempt to destroy him. As he waits, he gives a speech in which he thinks about what life will be like if he makes it to old age. It's a speech which moves David. He ponders what makes the play so hard to perform, in an essay which takes us from Quentin Tarantino to Philip Larkin. Produced by Camellia Sinclair for BBC Audio in Bristol Mixed by Suzy Robins

4X4: MIKE NICHOLS PT. 3: THE DESIGNATED MOURNER In 1996 Mike Nichols did something extraordinary after a friendly table reading of Wallace Shawn's new play, THE DESIGNATED MOURNER, he agreed to play the main part of JACK for a theatrical run in London. Previously Nichols' only acting credit was an abbreviated run of WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF with Elaine May in 1980, (he was also a savvy stage veteran due to his legendary comedy career, also with May). Working with noted playwright and director (theater and film) David Hare along with co-stars MIRANDA RICHARDSON (who will always be Queenie from Blackadder II to us), and David de Keyser, the run had critics and actors looking for words to describe Nichols' one-of-a-kind performance. Luckily, at the end of the run they decided to commemorate this run and went to Pinewood Studios to shoot a film version in three days. A harrowing series of monologues details the slow crumbling of an unnamed nation. Is the government cracking down or are rebels taking over? Yes? The result is a culling of what the play calls "high brow" culture. The three characters are either talking as ghosts or as the last person remaining to remember what things used to be (A Designated Mourner). We came across this oddity in our research and the praise Nichols received in his performance, and our general love of all things Wallace Shawn, made us hunt down a copy of this criminally unavailable film. Nichols quite simply gives one of the most seductive, brutal and impossibly off-the-cuff-seeming performance that it is too late once he has you sucked in.  We have seen hundreds of movies during thus podcast and his performance may be the greatest of them all. Seriously. It sneaks up to you with a smile and leads you along until it crushes your heart. So why is it so damn hard to find? We bought an original DVD from its initial release in 1997 off of ebay. The BBC owns it and the story of why it is so difficult to find, despite its legendary status among those who know, is a mystery we try to unravel. The legendary British playwright Sir David Hare is widely regarded as British theater's most fervent chronicler of his country's moral failings, to use the words of New York Times critic Bill Brantley. Of himself,  Hare has said, “It's usually assumed that there are two groups of people in the world, those who obey the rules and those who disobey the rules, but in fact there's a third group to which I belong: the people who don't understand the rules.” Luckily for us, that misunderstanding, or curiosity, has been channeled into 39 plays over 50 years, as well as notable adaptations of other works, including screenplays for Michael Cunningham's The Hours and Bernard Schlink's The Reader, for both of which he received Academy Award nominations. But Hare's entry into playwriting was something of a happy accident, after a theater troupe he was working with, found itself in sudden need of a play. Hare jumped in, turning around a script in four days. That work, which explored the then-nascent feminist movement, exhibited a keen interest in strong female protagonists that has marked his career ever since. It makes sense, then, that one of his book choices for Shelf Life is Mary Gabriel's Ninth Street Women about the contribution of five female artists who did anything but play by the rules, as well as Wallace Shawn's ominous short play, The Designated Mourner, dense with allusions to tyranny and complacency.

On this week's episode we're honoured that our guest is Sir David Hare, not just one of Britain's leading playwrights, but also a screenwriter and theatre and film director. He's written over 40 full length plays, 19 staged at the National, including Plenty (which went on to be a star-studded movie), Skylight and many more. He talks to us about his new play Straight Line Crazy, directed by Nicholas Hytner and showing at The Bridge Theatre in London. It opened to many reviewers saying this was David's most dramatically play for decades and stars Ralph Fiennes as Robert Moses, the man who set out to build parks and expressways across Manhattan in the 1950's. It's extraordinarily relevant to the way London is being developed at such a hectic pace, often with little or no concern for its residents. Moses wanted to extend the lower Manhattan expressway through the residential district of Washington Square where he was met by fierce opposition who managed to block the plans. One of his opponents Jane Jacobs, played by Helen Schlesinger, went on to write The Death and Life of American Great Cities about the ongoing battle between communities and the planners who oppose them. David also talks about his frequent collaborations with Ralph Fiennes, who starred last year in David's one-man play about battling Covid, Beat the Devil. He talks about the influence of America on his work and his period of self-imposed exile there after the critics panned Plenty. He laments the passing of an age in which theatre producers from Peter Hall to Richard Eyre took risks and stood by avant garde writers to be replaced by our ‘box office crazy'. He's also full of sage advice for anyone wanting to write a screenplay and explains the differences between the two. Finally, he and Ed settle down to bury the hatchet and iron out their political differences. This is David Hare at the pinnacle of his game, reflecting on a life spent in theatre, television and film – not to be missed.

In this episode, I talk with Clifford Hare, my dad and President of Faithful Men Ministries; and David Hare, my brother. We talk about the importance of a father's blessing of affirmation in a child's life. The meaning of affirmation and where we first hear of the father's affirmation, or blessing, in the Bible.Cliff shares about how he grew up in a non-christian home and had caring parents, but never had that affirmation of you are a good son. Many people grow up with an image of the only way we get affirmation, or love, is out of fear unless we accomplish goals in life. Other times we may have a fear that we never measure up to receive that love and affection. As men, we must allow ourselves to be vulnerable in front of our children and those we mentor. This isn't to show weakness, but that we  have difficult time and how we work through them. The origin of the father's blessing goes back to the book of Numbers 6:23-27 when God speaks to Moses and shares with him the Aaronic Blessing. Later we see when Jesus is being baptized by John that as He comes up from the water that God speaks and tells Him, "This is My Beloved Son, in whom I AM well pleased." This comes before Jesus has done the first miracle, sermon or teaching; yet God was affirming him as his son.Our identity in society come from the father.  This comes with us going back to learn to hear the voice of the Lord. The way to truly know of that love is not just by having a conversation with God, but having those intimate times with Him; whether in prayer, praise, both or simply just resting in His presence.Even for Jesus after was affirmed by God, he went into the wilderness that brought a  time of testing a walking by faith that we see that Jesus had confidence in His heavenly Father.Clifford Hare has been married to Patricia Hare for 48 years. They have 2 sons, 1 daughter-in-law, 3 grandsons and 1 granddaughter. Cliff took over Faithful Men Ministries for Jack King in 2016. He serves as an elder and pastor at the Springs Church in Jacksonville, Florida.David has works for the Florida State Corrections 6 years and has also is an ordained minister for almost 10 years. The Small Church Media PodcastThere are many podcasts for church media, but this one is for the small churches!Listen on: Apple Podcasts Spotify
