Podcast Episode: Why Engine Break-In Is Critical for Diesel Generator PerformanceIn this episode of the Aurora Generator Podcast, we explore the science and importance behind properly breaking in a diesel engine—especially when used in backup and off-grid generators.Engine break-in, also known as mechanical run-in, is more than just running the engine for a few hours. It's a controlled wear-in process that helps the piston rings properly seat against the cylinder walls, forming a tight seal and ensuring long-term performance. Without the right break-in, engines can experience premature wear, excessive blow-by, or glazing of the cylinder walls—issues that are often irreversible without expensive repairs. We explain how the surface of the cylinder walls, designed with a specific cross-hatch pattern, retains oil and supports lubrication. Proper break-in flattens the peaks of these surfaces, improving oil film formation and minimizing friction.Loading the engine correctly is key. A new generator should not run under light loads during break-in. Applying sufficient load creates the necessary internal pressure (BMEP) to push the rings against the cylinder wall and ensure optimal wear. Running too lightly during this stage may lead to “glazing” and poor compression. That's why an early oil change is also essential to remove metallic particles that accumulate during this process. We also dive into tribology—the study of friction, lubrication, and wear within the piston-cylinder system. Understanding this helps explain how oil film formation, bore distortion, and surface roughness all influence engine efficiency and durability. Even the shape of the piston skirt and cylinder bore plays a role in managing friction and sealing performance.Another issue we cover is wet stacking—a problem common in under-loaded diesel generators. When a generator doesn't run hot enough, unburned fuel and carbon build up in the exhaust system, hurting performance and increasing maintenance needs. We talk about how to prevent wet stacking through regular load testing or load bank usage.Lastly, we touch on maintenance tips from industry guidelines, such as those found in Generac's diesel generator manuals. These include checking oil levels, replacing filters on schedule, and avoiding ethanol-blended fuel during break-in or storage. If you're a homeowner, technician, or professional responsible for maintaining diesel-powered generators, this episode gives you the foundational knowledge needed to make smart decisions and extend the life of your equipment.
Simon Longdill wasn't impressed with the engines available to him in his class of racing, so he built his own. On this episode of Tuned In, we catch up with the man behind Synergy's small-capacity, ultra-high revving, 400+hp V8s to talk through the ins and outs of these screaming motors and much, much more. Use “SYNERGY50” to get $50 OFF our HPA Engine Building Starter Package: https://hpcdmy.co/enginepackagebWhile “building your own engine” in the literal sense might sound like a more-than-daunting task for most, with a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering, this was something that Simon Longdill was more than capable of. Limited to 2.4 litres in his Speedway midget class, Simon hatched an idea that would go on to become a full-time business.Using two sets of 1200cc Kawasaki ZX12R cylinder heads and barrels, Simon got to work creating a vicious 2.4-litre V8 that would go on to crush the competition on its debut in New Zealand, before doing the same in Australia, then doing so well in the US that the rule book was changed and Simon and his team were never invited again. These days, you can find Synergy V8s of differing capacities and power levels motivating all manner of race (and a few street) cars across the globe. In this conversation, we get down into the weeds of this fascinating engine's story, answering all the big questions around the 11,000 RPM screamer's inner workings and development journey. Simon didn't just stop at the first iteration either — these motors have been continuously developed over the last decade as the tech has improved, new lessons are learnt, and big improvements are made. With some fascinating looks into Simon's side projects that include a 400hp BMW 1000RR two-litre V8 built for Bonneville, an 800hp twin-turbo Synergy V8 for Pikes Peak, hydrogen power systems, and plenty more, this is a tech-heavy episode that's going to please anyone with an interest in serious automotive engineering. Like I said in the previous episode before episode before, accounts on the history and way of living of igorots in pre-Hispanic and Hispanic times are so few that sometimes one might wonder if igorots even exists in the olden times. For the record they do. But they were at times considered a footnote of history that very few passages or talks about them in the modern history books. At times, conceptions about them are wrong. And the worse part is that those misconceptions even found their way to the education sector that if the teacher won't do the necessary research to very these information, he would be teaching he/she would be teaching those wrong notions to the children. With the advent of IPEd or Indigenous Peoples Education, I am hoping that these will change that Igorots here and abroad will try to dig in deeper to learn about their culture and to know more of the ways their ancestors lived. #igorotpodcast #podcast #onecordillera #igorotPodcast #kankanaeyPodcast #podcast #elmaestrspeaks #torogitalks Don't forget to check the Sponsors of this Podcast by clicking the Link below This podcast is sponsored by the following. Our guest this week is Mondale Robinson, my friend and a hero of electoral activism. Mondale is the founder and Principal of The Black Male Voter Project, an organization dedicated to overcoming systemic disenfranchisement of Black voters, and Black men in particular, in the electoral process. ABOUT THE BLACK MALE VOTER PROJECT Since the inception of the United States, Black men have been the recipients of inequitable treatment as it pertains to the ability to vote. And since the enactment of the 15th Amendment in 1870, the powers in this country have been exacting strategies to prevent the full enfranchisement of Black men. These practices continue today in many forms, like voter ID laws, felony disenfranchisement, and misinformation campaigns just to name a few. Our goal at Black Male Voter Project is to increase the number of Black men who participate in electoral politics. The United States of America has failed Black men in nearly every aspect of social life and access to the ballot is no exception. Our work is wherever Black men are, and the urgency is now. Currently in this country, nearly half of the Black men who are registered to vote have not voted in the last five consecutive elections. This fact should not be misconstrued as a critique of Black men, because we know that voting is a habit that is only formed when resources are spent on it. For this reason, Black Male Voter Project exists. We have thrown out the traditional way of campaigning, because of its transactional nature and lack of ability to reach “brothas” where they are. In doing so, we have created a new campaign model that prioritizes an expansive approach to reaching Black men. This campaign model we named BMEP Additory Approach© is designed to eliminate the inherent skepticism, lack of voter mobilization, and increase the desire within Black men to participate in electoral politics greater than the causal relationship that currently exists. BMEP stands for “Black Male Engagement Program” and Additory means “tending to add; making an addition”, thus the name explains our approach to engage and add Black males to the active voting demographic. BMEP Additory Approach also requires more resources and acts as an alternative to the electoral narrative which employs Progressives, Party officials, candidates, and auxiliaries to prioritize the white swing-voter over Black men. This behavior is at the core of the neglect currently eroding trust between Black men and electoral politics. At the national and state level, the focus has never been on mobilizing Black men as the base voter. That coupled with massive voter registration projects it is clear why Black men aren't participating in elections at higher rates. While voter registration projects are undoubtedly important, without meaningful investment in mobilizing Black men these projects fall short. We don't have a voter registration problem with Black men, we have a voter engagement and turnout problem. The history of the United States is a story about the disenfranchisement of millions based on their blackness. More than a hundred years of violent voter suppression, poll taxes, literacy tests, and gerrymandering have created a climate that is nothing shy of hostile towards Black men that choose to stand up and be a part of the electoral process, even if that is just being a casual voter. So if the opposition knows how to suppress the participation of Black men, then our only response must be to support a campaign that reverses these ideas. The issue of low Black male voter participation can be addressed by dedicating oneself to reversing these neo-colonial ideas. So we have. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/alyssa-milano-sorry-not-sorry/message

Dr. Andy is a tenured Professor in the Center for Sport Performance at CSU Fullerton. He was born and raised in beautiful Rochester, WA and is a die-hard Seahawks, Huskies, & Mariner fan. RIP Sonics. As a youth, Andy played every sport at his disposal, excelling at Football, Basketball, Baseball, and Track & Field. While not playing, he worked at grocery stores, gas stations, hay fields, blueberry farms, and in the road construction business. It was during this time he discovered Strength & Conditioning. Andy took his limited talents to Linfield College to join their Football team and pursue a degree in Exercise Science. While he experienced great success in both (2004 National Championship and 2x Captain and immediate inductee into the "All Ugly" Team), the true reward of this time was the meeting of lifelong friend (Doug Larson). The two fed each other's pursuit of knowledge of human performance and led them to attend the University of Memphis for the Masters degrees in Human Movement Sciences. A bit of luck and excellent faculty mentoring led Doug and Andy to meet Mike Bledsoe and the man formally known as "Barbell Buddha" Chris Moore - all of which later led to the creation of the #1 Health & Fitness Podcast in the world Barbell Shrugged. It also marked the start of Andy's competitive Weightlifting (culminating in his 7th Place finish in the 2007 National Championships), Mixed Martial Arts, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu careers. Needing to know more about muscle, Andy spent 4 years studying the structure and function of human skeletal muscle at the single cell level, a feat which earned him a PhD in Human Bioenergetics in 2011. This also resulted in the friendship with frequent collaborator Dr. Jimmy Bagley and the ability to open up his own "Biochemistry and Molecular Exercise Physiology Laboratory" at CSU Fullerton. He now focuses his attention on teaching classes (Sports Nutrition, Exercise Physiology, Designing Exercise Programs, Applied Strength and Conditioning, Athlete Assessment and Measurement, etc.) and running the BMEP lab (which studies the acute responses and chronic adaptations of human skeletal muscle in response to high force/velocity/power and fatiguing exercise from the whole body, down to the individual muscle fiber and even into the individual DNA. I had the opportunity to speak to Dr. Andy Galpin PhD on the podcast recently. I thought his point of view as researcher would be extremely informative to clinicians like myself, that claim to be an “evidence-based provider.” Are we actually practicing what the evidence shows? Should we only practice what the evidence shows? These are just a few of the touch points Dr. Gaplin covered for us today. You’ll love this informative conversation if you’re a Doctor of Chiropractic, Physical Therapist, Exercise Science student, Rehab Specialist, or “Evidence-Based Practitioner.” Show Notes HERE Dr. Andy Galpin’s Bio: Director of Education: Andy is a tenured Professor in the Center for Sport Performance at CSU Fullerton. Dr Andy Galpin (Instagram and Twitter) has a degree in exercise science, a masters in Human Movement Sciences and a PhD in Human Bioenergetics (studying the structure and function of human skeletal muscle at the single cell level), This also resulted in the opening of the Biochemistry and Molecular Exercise Physiology Laboratory (BMEP) at CSU Fullerton. The BMEP lab studies the acute responses and chronic adaptations of human skeletal muscle in response to high force, velocity, power and fatiguing exercise from the whole body, down to the individual muscle fiber and even into the individual DNA. Check this video they shot with Conor McGregor to measure the angular velocity of his spinning back kick! I stand corrected: this was 3 years ago! Not "recently" like I said in the introduction to this episode *blush*. I really enjoyed Andy Galpin’s interview on The Joe Rogan Experience which led me to ask him on to Corporate Warrior. Every now and again, I like to invite someone on to the show who isn’t from a HIT background and has a different opinion on what exercise is the most effective for various desirable outcomes. Whilst Andy does believe that HIT provides some value, he believes that traditional high intensity training falls short in meeting all of the requirements for optimising health, longevity and even muscle gain. Check out Andy's new book: Unplugged: Evolve from Technology to Upgrade Your Fitness, Performance, & Consciousness (Amazon US / Amazon UK) In this episode we cover: Andy's opinions on the pros and cons of the typical HIT protocol How Andy adds muscle to his athletes What Andy has changed his mind about regarding muscle adaptation/growth and post-workout nutrition timing in recent memory and much more This episode is brought to you by Hituni.com, providers of the best online courses in high intensity training that come highly recommended by Dr. Doug McGuff and Discover Strength CEO, Luke Carlson.
