AMTA's Kelsey Hipkin chats with Josh Hannaberry, AMTA's Senior Advisor, Strategic Partnerships, and Christina Sadlowski, CTSP Advisor for Fleet Safety with Strike Group. In this episode, we dive into Christina and Josh's journey towards getting their Certified Transportation Safety Professional (CTSP) designations, their motivations to pursue the designation, their experience with the process, and how the program encourages collaboration among peers working toward certification. We also discuss how the CTSP and CTSC designations highlight the diversity in commercial vehicle operations - beyond the typical tractor-trailer setups - and the unique safety needs that come with it. Plus, from an insurance and compliance angle, we dive into how the designation supports safety through both the National Safety Code (NSC) and Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) frameworks.Visit AMTA's website if you would like to learn more about the Certified Transportation Safety Professional (CTSP) program: https://www.amta.ca/ctsp, or the Certified Transportation Safety Coordinator (CTSC) program: https://www.amta.ca/ctsc. With the launch of our new member value initiative, AMTA has made the CTSC and CTSP designations more attainable. This includes adjustments to full carrier fees and tiered supplier memberships, including bundled education packages with CTSC and CTSP.If you have any questions, please reach out to us membership@amta.ca or visit amta.ca/become-a-member for more details.Thank you to everyone who attended AMTA's 87th Annual Conference at the River Cree Resort and Casino from April 8-10, 2025, in Enoch. When he's not coaching the general population, he enjoys listening to the band Tool, exploring The Witcher universe, and sipping Highland Single Malt Scotch. Key Highlights: [00:01 - 09:30] Opening Segment ● Andrew discusses his background and how he got into the fitness industry. He mentions that he started as a trainer at a gym when he was 32. ● Prior to that, he had worked in various industries, including owning a nightclub and working in the banking and casino industry. ● Andrew also talks about his philosophy of giving and supporting others in the industry, which has led to many opportunities for him, including public speaking and hosting events. ● Andrew talks about the prevalence of great strength coaches coming out of Canada. [09:31 - 23:15] Fitness Basics and Mindset ● Andrew talks about how he prefers to focus on the basics of fitness and avoid controversy or polarization in the media. ● He emphasizes the importance of getting more people into gyms and lifting weights for better health. ● He also encourages others to focus on being helpful and sharing important ideas rather than getting caught up in arguments with those who are not receptive to positive training and nutritional ideas. ● Andrew enumerates what people are missing, in terms of basics, that can use them in long-term ○ People are afraid of lifting weights because of their lack of knowledge and fear of injury. ○ People get overwhelmed with what they're supposed to do, and they become paralyzed by constantly consuming information instead of actually applying it. ○ People tend to seek quick results and quick fixes, which is just human nature. [23:16 - 29:36] Strength Training for Long-Term Fat Loss ● Andrew believes that building strength and muscle should be the highest goal for people in the gym instead of just focusing on fat loss. ● Strength and muscle building tend to go hand in hand concurrently, especially if you eat in a slight calorie surplus. ● Building more strength and muscle is excellent for fat loss and keeping fat off in the medium to long term. ● Strength training boosts metabolism, helps in muscle recovery, and burns more calories while at rest. [29:36 - 46:22] Closing Segment ● He believes that while some are drawn to tough love approaches like 75 Hard, it's ineffective for most people. ● He is also okay with different types of messaging and methods because different people have different needs and preferences. ● A sustainable pace and approach to working out and nutrition is better than an unsustainable one to avoid setting oneself up to fail. ● Andrew categorizes food into healthy, non-negotiable treats and high-calorie convenience food and sets boundaries around the foods you enjoy. Key Quotes: “My favorite response to anything long form short form is I needed this today and it tells me I'm on the right track with an important message.” - Andrew Coates “Medium term, long term building more strength, building more muscle is phenomenal for fat loss and keeping fat off.” - Andrew Coates “75 hard is fine. It's not for most people, it's understanding that messaging and method are gonna be different for different people.” - Andrew Coates “One of my favorite attitudes at nutrition is not to fucking clean up everything so that we are perfect. It's to take an inventory of what you're eating and put it in a couple of boxes. I think three basic boxes.” Andrew Coates CONNECT WITH ANDREW: Instagram: @andrewcoatesfitness Website: andrewcoatesfitness.com Getnatesbook - This book is a must-have for anyone looking to drop belly fat and eliminate love handles permanently with expert tips on the 7 daily investments for health and wealth, the one type of cardio you need to include, and a handy checklist to hold yourself accountable to your goals. And why? What did that book (or books) teach you that was so profound? 22:15 - How do you find your new maintenance calories when changing your training style? Say, coming from marathon training to training for hypertrophy? Obviously energy expenditure is lower, so how do we find a new maintenance calorie level? 29:20 - I am a 5’6, 135lb female and have been working out with weights for about 3 years. 6 days on and 1 day off. My macros have varied over that time... I would go from tracking religiously at 140 protein, 160 carbs, and 50 fats, to not tracking as closely but also not binging, as I’m pretty smart about my food choices. However even at my leanest I still did not have the six pack abs I want. I could see ribs and hip bones but not defined abs at 122lbs. I will be 50 in three months and of course have a big trip planned. Is this something that is obtainable at this time frame? Are there any bits of advice that you can offer to achieve this goal? I spent the last year at maintenance calories and tried a cut back in October and saw very little changes. Just wondering what is the best way to tackle a cut now that I'm in my mid 40's? Should I go into a more drastic deficit or go slow and maybe start off in a 10% deficit. Or am I just not in a big enough deficit? (21:20) - How would someone go about transitioning from a 5-day strength program (performance bodybuilding type) to a 4 day split. Would you make your workouts longer? More intense? Prioritize hypertrophy over strength? Basically how do I decrease volume/intensity without going ‘backwards’? Would that impinge on recovery? Say, working out hard for 5 days a week and taking 2 days for light circuit style training? (18:55) - I’ve recently added 30 min of cardio to my lifting routine because I’m 7 weeks out of a competition. Trying to maximize my time so I’m sometimes training in the morning from 5am to 7:00 doing my heavy lifts and cardio and going again after work to finish (triceps on a shoulder day or band work like glute kickback burnouts and abductor work on glute ham days for example). Is this a good plan or should I just use that time to recover- I train hard in the 10-15 rep range to close failure and drop sets and myo sets. I hate doing cardio at night because I prefer doing it with caffeine in my system. I'm adding the band work to focus on upper glutes as much as possible. —- Social Links: Blog – http://www.tailoredcoachingmethod.com/blog Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/tailoredcoachingmethod Instagram -https://www.instagram.com/codymcbroom YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/codymcbroom1 Email – info@tailoredcoachingmethod.com Cody McBroom Has Also Been Featured On: Huffington Post, Bodybuilding.com, The PTDC, Dr. John Rusin, Muscle For Life, Barbell Shrugged, Strong By Design, OPEX Fitness and More…

Research seems to show they are VERY effective for a shorter period of time than straight sets, so why are we not all doing drop sets all the time? (15:00) - I have been lifting consistently for about a year and a half. In the fall, I started hiring a personal trainer to write 8-week programs for me. The most recent one she wrote put the days in the following order: push, legs, pull, legs, glutes/shoulders. I always hear you are not supposed to work the same muscle group two days in a row. On this program, the last two days both include multiple glute exercises (for example- hip thrusts and glute-focused leg press on one day…kickbacks and glute emphasized back extensions on the next). Am I overthinking the fact that these exercises are one day apart? Or is this a sign that my trainer may not know what she’s doing? (24:40) - Question about clients coming from Optavi, which is a very restrictive fad diet. Like 800-1000 cals and they recommend no exercise. Just awful. Anyway, I have a lot of women coming to me off of that program. Many of them have lost a good chunk of weight and many have gained weight back but they all have weight they still need to lose. I’m not sure if they can safely continue in a deficit. They have body fat to lose but on the flip side they have spent many months on this very low calorie program. This podcast covers everything you need to know about "Weight Loss Drugs". Prescription weight loss drugs have been around for almost 100 years, believe it or not. But they have regrown in popularity once again and because there are new emerging prescription drugs being given to obese patients by doctors, it's an important topic for us to cover on the show! So I brought our Chief Science Officer, Dr. Brandon Roberts, back on the show to cover the topic in massive detail -- specifically breaking down the different weight loss drugs out there, what they actually do (ie - how they work), and the potential risks of taking them. If you'd like to read the article we have on the topic as well, visit the blog at www.tailoredcoachingmethod.com/weight-loss-drugs If you love this podcast, please do us a favor and share this episode with anyone you think would like it or benefit from it. I guess I have two questions: The main method of progressive overload I know of is the double progression method. You choose a rep range and a weight, then keep using the same weight until you reach the top of the rep range. Once you reach the top of the rep range, you go up in weight and start again. But this means that each time you go up in weight, but start at lower reps, your volume goes down. An example of doing 8-12 reps at 100 lbs: 8 reps x 100 lbs = 800 and 12 reps x 100 lbs = 1200. But going back down, 8 reps x 105 lbs = 840lbs… So you're going up 5 lbs, but it kind of deloads your volume? It seems like a regression, is it not? I now know I need to reduce my diet fatigue before I can have a successful cut. Is this something a coach could help me with specifically? Would they guide me and my biofeedback so that I know when I would be ready for a cut again? (29:25) - When tracking macros, should we be including fibre in our carb counts? If you are eating very high fibre foods, the calories coming from carbohydrates might be lower than expected. Should we track fibre separately from net carbs if we tend to eat very high fibre carbohydrates? I can easily get up to 60-70g fibre out of 190 carbs. (35:35) - Does creatine have calories? It is technically a non essential amino acid so that would mean 4 calories per gram, but if it is going into our cells, we aren't digesting it (or at least most of it). I can belt squat, almost 400lb, leg press I did 900lb for 8 reps the other day and my deadlift max is 315lb But barbell squat I can’t do more than 175. As soon as I get under the bar I just imagine squatting down and snapping in half and hurting up my back. How do I improve my squat and increase the weight? (12:00) - My question is how would you recommend transitioning back to maintenance and further down the road doing a cut? Should I maintain my protein intake and just cut back on carbs? (17:00) - I do about 1 hr per day of circuit style resistance training with 15 lb dumbbells/kettlebells. I am looking to start resistance training with heavier loads for body recomposition (increase muscle mass and decrease fat mass, I think I am "skinny fat") and am wondering if I will need to decrease my caloric intake if I start training heavier but with longer rest times between sets and lower reps. —- Social Links: Blog – http://www.tailoredcoachingmethod.com/blog Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/tailoredcoachingmethod Instagram -https://www.instagram.com/codymcbroom YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/codymcbroom1 Email – info@tailoredcoachingmethod.com Cody McBroom Has Also Been Featured On: Huffington Post, Bodybuilding.com, The PTDC, Dr. John Rusin, Muscle For Life, Barbell Shrugged, Strong By Design, OPEX Fitness and More…
