Ever wonder what a world-class performance specialist eats to fuel his day? You might be surprised to learn it includes wild game like elk, deer, and yes, even bear meat! In this episode of Habits and Hustle, I talk with Dr. Andy Galpin, a leading expert in human performance who works with elite athletes across multiple sports. Dr. Galpin cuts through the noise of trendy diets to share fundamental nutrition principles that drive performance. We dive into why calorie balance, whole foods, and adequate protein (about 1g per pound of bodyweight) matter more than following any specific eating schedule. We also discuss hunting, eating bear meat, and how nutrition needs differ based on activity. Overall, Dr. Galpin emphasizes individualization, finding what works for your specific body, goals, and lifestyle rather than following one-size-fits-all approaches. Kevin A. Murach, Ph.D., received his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he earned the Ronald Hyatt Scholarship in Exercise Science. After graduating, Dr. Murach completed a master's degree in Exercise Physiology at James Madison University at Harrisonburg, Virginia, then earned his Ph.D. in Human Bioenergetics from the Ball State Human Performance Laboratory in Muncie, Indiana. His dissertation was a collaboration with NASA aimed at optimizing the exercise prescription for astronauts on the International Space Station. After Ball State, Dr. Murach spent six years as a post-doctoral fellow/scholar at the University of Kentucky Center for Muscle Biology in Lexington under the guidance of Drs. Charlotte Peterson and John McCarthy. During this time, he was supported by two National Institutes of Health grants (F32 and K99), was recipient of the Thomas V. Getchell Memorial Award from the University of Kentucky Grant Writing Workshop, won the 2017 FASEB BioArt contest and was an NIH NIA Butler-Williams Scholar. He now is an assistant professor in the Department of Health, Human Performance and Recreation in the University of Arkansas College of Education and Health Professions. His current research uses human muscle samples, primary cell culture and genetically modified mouse models to understand the molecular cues that drive exercise adaptations and aging, and the interaction between these two (among other things). In his free time, Dr. Murach enjoys spending time with his wife, Dr. Kyndal Murach, exercising, building custom watches, cooking, smoking meats and collecting bourbon. He shared this preprint he recently posted: https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2024.03.26.586857v1 Summary: This study investigated the molecular mechanisms underlying muscle recovery after exercise, focusing on the temporal dynamics of gene expression and DNA methylation. Biopsies of the vastus lateralis muscle were taken before and at various time points (30 minutes, 3 hours, 8 hours, and 24 hours) after resistance exercise (RE), along with a control group. RNA sequencing and DNA methylomics were employed to analyze gene expression and methylation patterns, respectively, complemented by computational methods. This episode is brought to you by Birch Living, Lifeforce, and Plunge. We've heard of tests that are used as traditional measures of longevity. Still, a lesser-known but equally important test that should be factored into longevity and long-term independence is VO2 max. This test measures how well your body uses oxygen during exercise, which ultimately translates into how efficiently your body uses oxygen in daily activities as you age. According to today's guest, increasing VO2 max can significantly reduce your risk of all-cause mortality. Today, on the Dhru Purohit Show, Dhru sits down with Dr. Andy Galpin to dive deep into VO2 max and why he believes it is one of the best predictors of longevity. Dr. Galpin breaks down the research behind this test and why it's critical for everyone to know their VO2 max baseline. He also shares why a low VO2 max can cause chronic fatigue, making it challenging to engage in daily activities, and shares his top tips on increasing your VO2 max if you are starting your exercise journey. If you are looking for a deep dive into VO2 Max, this episode is a must-listen. Andy Galpin is a tenured professor at California State University, Fullerton. On this Episode we are joined by Dr. Andy Galpin. Dr. Galpin an author, a scientist, a teacher and a coach, who has a Phd in Human Bioenergetics and runs the Biochemistry and Molecular Exercise Physiology Lab at California State University. Beyond the huge depth of clinical research that Dr. Galpin is involved in, he's also worked with the likes of Mike Lee, Conor McGregor and Stefi Cohen. I asked Dr. Galpin to come on and discuss wearable fitness tech- it's a subject that has been greatly requested, and to my mind there's no better expert than Andy, having published his book 'Unplugged', alongside Brian McKenzie a few years back- by far one of my favourite reads on the matter. There's plenty here to think about- from HRV monitors, to heart rate training and sleep apps, and what we really set out to do was give you some pause for thought on how you can use these devices, without letting them use you. Enjoy!

GUEST:Dr Mark Burnley is an exercise physiologist with expertise in endurance performance and exercise-related fatigue. He performed his doctoral studies on the kinetics of oxygen uptake (i.e., the time it takes to "switch on" the aerobic system). His subsequent research has investigated the critical power concept, neuromuscular fatigue processes and the resulting fluctuations in muscle output. Mark used to run competitively at a regional level, but like most exercise physiologists, was not particularly talented. He is better at studying performance instead.SPONSOR(S): Please support this podcast by checking out our sponsor for this episode:► Moxy Monitor: https://www.moxymonitor.com/shop/ (5% off promo code: “UPSIDE” at checkout)EPISODE LINKS:► Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCnALqirLBF4CU-5U7eeCqjQ► Twitter: https://twitter.com/DrMarkBurnleyTOPICS:0:00 - Intro2:45 - Start03:15 - Background9:30 - Physiological Thresholds23:50 - Lactate Threshold34:50 - Fatigue and Exercise intensity domains43:35 - Energy Systems & Substrates56:55 - VLaMax and Lactate1:10:45 - Critical PowerPodcast available on January 31st, 2022PODCAST INFO:► Podcast website: https://anchor.fm/upside-strength-podcast► Apple Podcasts: http://apple.co/3mroiB4► Spotify: http://spoti.fi/34jJtyXPODCAST PLAYLISTS:► Full episodes playlist: http://bit.ly/3oSCkxe► English Clips playlist: http://bit.ly/3gRmAry► French Clips playlist: http://bit.ly/2K1IoVKCONNECT:► Subscribe for more videos here: http://bit.ly/1Xgr5y5► Book a Free Consultation: https://bit.ly/UpsideConsult► WhatsApp: https://wa.me/41763949673► Twitter: https://twitter.com/seanseale► LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/seanseale/► Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/upsidestrength► Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/upside_strength► Tik Tok: https://vm.tiktok.com/ZSgNAPQF/EQUIPMENT & PROMOTIONS:▶︎ Moxy Monitor (outside CH, AUS, ITA,

This interview is going in as a substitute for episode 79 of Barbell Buddha, the "Barbell Shrugged Thanksgiving special w/ Christmas Abbott" that took place in Sweden while visiting Eleiko's Headquarters. That episode is fun and loose and there are some gems scattered in this episode, so I encourage you to go listen to it after this interview. Dr. Galpin is a tenured University Professor with a PhD in "Human Bioenergetics". He teaches classes, publishes research, and works with athletes in the areas of health, human performance, strength & conditioning, and nutrition. If you're a fan of Chris and Barbell Shrugged you've heard his name many, many times. Andy was a colleague, former roommate, and close personal friend with Chris. I can't thank him enough for coming on the show and paying tribute to Chris's legacy and giving an honest, raw, and at some times, emotional take on Chris's life and legacy. I'm going to kick the show off with a song called “All or Nothing” by my favorite band, MuteMath. I encourage you to listen deeply to the words and carry that forward into the show. “Don't waste your whole life, on just a half try, it's all or nothing” Please enjoy this special episode of Barbell Buddha Rediscovered called “The Story of Two Chris's.”

Dr. Andy Galpin is a tenured Professor in the Center for Sport Performance at California State University Fullerton.Andy has an Undergraduate degree in Exercise Science, a Masters degree in Human Movement Sciences and in 2011 earned his PhD in Human Bioenergetics. In this episode, Dr Galpin and I discuss how he takes his extensive knowledge about the human body and performance, and helps develop more complete, efficient, and advanced combat athletes.
Andy Galpin, PhD, is a tenured Professor at the Center for Sport Performance at California State University, Fullerton. Galpin received an undergraduate degree in Exercise Science from Linfield College, a Master’s Degree in Human Movement Sciences from the University of Memphis, and a PhD in Human Bioenergetics from Ball State University. He currently teaches and runs the Biochemistry and Molecular Exercise Physiology Lab at California State University, Fullerton. That will tell you he’s a smart guy, but Andy also understands the real world of training and nutrition and consults some of the world’s top athletes to elite performance levels. There are many reasons why I love the guy: he’s a great human, he loves strength and conditioning, he’s from Washington State and he loves hip-hop; which pretty much seals the deal for me. Andy’s also the co-author of the best-selling book, “Unplugged: Evolve From Technology To Upgrade Your Fitness, Performance, and Consciousness” and has been featured just about everywhere including on the Joe Rogan Podcast. In this episode we dive into the principles of training and nutrition that are based on science but also work in the real world, how to spot B.S. and fake guru’s, and many insights on how to become a great coach in the real world and gets results with your clients. Let's go. IN THIS EPISODE YOU’LL LEARN Andy’s bulletproof bullshit detector to find out what advice is real and what is B.S.The 3 pieces of evidence you want to look at when it comes to your certainty about claims in training, nutrition and supplementation. My 80/20 rule of sticking with things I know work and testing out new methods, innovations and things I’ve learned. The cook, the chef and the baker analogy and why you should start as a cook no matter what! Why social media is skipping the cook portion of teaching and creating a lot of B.S.Why you have to be crystal clear about what you want to achieve before you ever pick an exercise rep, set, or anything else.Andy’s template for building an athlete of life, and what you should do weekly when it comes to training. Why speed and power are SO important with the elderly population and how it can help you live longer and even prevent death. The reason why high intensity training should be cut down by 50% or more (for most) to get the best results with health, fitness and performance. How culture changed the shift of exercise popularity from cardio to bodybuilding, to high intensity exercise, to recovery and how to put the puzzle pieces together. Why as a coach you shouldn't try to bring clients into your world but rather commit to stepping into theirs. How to put the puzzle pieces of it all together while getting the clients input so you get better compliance and results. Why Andy teaches his classes in a real world format that prepares coaches for the clients they’ll be dealing with. What “defenders” are and what is stopping clients from succeeding; we discuss how to remove the obstacles rather that “tell people what to do.”How Andy removed the barrier of an elite fighter to take their performance to the next level.Once you realize that you’re really a detective you’ll become a better coach. An exercise Andy gives to his students to help them learn to problem solve. The nutrition principles that have withstood the test of time and will continue to work for you and your clients. Why as a coach you should have a philosophy that you believe in when it comes to training and nutrition, even in the early stages of your career. And much, much more. Dr. Andy Galpin is a tenured Professor in the Center for Sport Performance at CSU Fullerton. In 2011, he earned his PhD in Human Bioenergetics and has done incredible work in regard to muscle fibers and how we understand them. On top of being a tenured professor, Dr. Galpin co-authored the book Unplugged and works hand in hand with a variety of elite athletes. In today’s episode, guest host Jake Boly sits down with Dr. Galpin to chat about muscle fibers. They talk about what we know, what we don’t know, and everything in-between.
Dr. Andy is a tenured Professor in the Center for Sport Performance at CSU Fullerton. He was born and raised in beautiful Rochester, WA and is a die-hard Seahawks, Huskies, & Mariner fan. RIP Sonics. As a youth, Andy played every sport at his disposal, excelling at Football, Basketball, Baseball, and Track & Field. While not playing, he worked at grocery stores, gas stations, hay fields, blueberry farms, and in the road construction business. It was during this time he discovered Strength & Conditioning. Andy took his limited talents to Linfield College to join their Football team and pursue a degree in Exercise Science. While he experienced great success in both (2004 National Championship and 2x Captain and immediate inductee into the "All Ugly" Team), the true reward of this time was the meeting of lifelong friend (Doug Larson). The two fed each other's pursuit of knowledge of human performance and led them to attend the University of Memphis for the Masters degrees in Human Movement Sciences. A bit of luck and excellent faculty mentoring led Doug and Andy to meet Mike Bledsoe and the man formally known as "Barbell Buddha" Chris Moore - all of which later led to the creation of the #1 Health & Fitness Podcast in the world Barbell Shrugged. It also marked the start of Andy's competitive Weightlifting (culminating in his 7th Place finish in the 2007 National Championships), Mixed Martial Arts, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu careers. Needing to know more about muscle, Andy spent 4 years studying the structure and function of human skeletal muscle at the single cell level, a feat which earned him a PhD in Human Bioenergetics in 2011. This also resulted in the friendship with frequent collaborator Dr. Jimmy Bagley and the ability to open up his own "Biochemistry and Molecular Exercise Physiology Laboratory" at CSU Fullerton. He now focuses his attention on teaching classes (Sports Nutrition, Exercise Physiology, Designing Exercise Programs, Applied Strength and Conditioning, Athlete Assessment and Measurement, etc.) and running the BMEP lab (which studies the acute responses and chronic adaptations of human skeletal muscle in response to high force/velocity/power and fatiguing exercise from the whole body, down to the individual muscle fiber and even into the individual DNA. The team does this by taking muscle biopsies from non-athletes and elite athletes from different backgrounds (e.g. normal college student, MMA fighter, Boxer, Weightlifter, etc.) and use highly sophisticated laboratory techniques and equipment to address questions about single fiber "type", size, function, protein quantity, diameter, mitochondria, and myonuclear function. There’s a lot of confusion and debate about how muscle fiber types relate to muscle growth. Some people say only fast-twitch muscle tissue can get big and strong and some of us naturally have more or less of it and can’t change that regardless of what we do in the gym. Others say both fast- and slow-twitch muscle can grow bigger and stronger and the makeup of our muscles is malleable, but we shouldn’t take any special measures in our training to try to emphasize one muscle type over the other. And others still say “muscle-specific hypertrophy” training—using different rep ranges with different muscle groups based on their dominant fiber type—is the optimal approach to training, and especially as an intermediate or advanced weightlifter. Who’s right? Well, I wasn’t even sure myself, that’s why I invited Dr. Andy Galpin on the show to explain. In case you’re not familiar with Andy, he has a PhD in Human Bioenergetics, teaches various university-level courses on sports nutrition and exercise physiology, and heads a lab that runs studies on muscle fiber type and muscular adaptations to exercise on a cellular level. His lab is also conducting an intermittent fasting study to learn more about the implications of fasted training on muscle growth, which I’m helping fund through my sports nutrition company Legion Athletics. 6:38 - What are the different types of muscle fibers? 13:49 - Is muscle fiber type the main reason why people gain muscle faster than others? 23:14 - Why do you think the olympic lifters had more fast twitch muscles? 24:37 - Can some people transform from type 1 to type 2 faster than other people? 26:55 - Is this information useful for normal lifters or experts? Should training be optimized or altered according to muscle fibers types? 29:48 - How do you emphasize building type 1 and type 2 muscles? 41:02 - How should people perceive muscle groups and how does that affect your exercise routine? 47:10 - Can you lose your fast twitch muscles by focusing on slow twitch? 56:00 - Where can people find you and your work? --- Mentioned on the show: Books by Mike Matthews: https://legionathletics.com/products/books/ Bigger Leaner Stronger: https://legionathletics.com/products/books/bigger-leaner-stronger/ Find Dr. Andy Galpin Online: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drandygalpin/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/drandygalpin --- Want to get my best advice on how to gain muscle and strength and lose fat faster? Health tracking devices like the apple watch, fitbit and many others have become extremely popular over the last decade, but how accurate are they? Can they really determine our calorie intake or accurately tell us how we sleep, how hard we should train or what to eat? Dr. Andy Galpin, PhD and Professor in the Center for Sports Performance at CSU Fullerton discusses his research and thoughts on tracking devices. Andy also shares how we can best use these devices to achieve our health and performance goals. More importantly, Andy discusses how to reconnect with our own body and mind to optimize our training, nutrition and other areas of health. Ultimately, we need to find ways to integrate technology into our lives without eliminating intuition. Combing both is the key to optimizing human performance! I had the opportunity to speak to Dr. Andy Galpin PhD on the podcast recently. I thought his point of view as researcher would be extremely informative to clinicians like myself, that claim to be an “evidence-based provider.” Are we actually practicing what the evidence shows? Should we only practice what the evidence shows? These are just a few of the touch points Dr. Gaplin covered for us today. You’ll love this informative conversation if you’re a Doctor of Chiropractic, Physical Therapist, Exercise Science student, Rehab Specialist, or “Evidence-Based Practitioner.” Show Notes HERE Dr. Andy Galpin’s Bio: Director of Education: Andy is a tenured Professor in the Center for Sport Performance at CSU Fullerton. Dr Andy Galpin (Instagram and Twitter) has a degree in exercise science, a masters in Human Movement Sciences and a PhD in Human Bioenergetics (studying the structure and function of human skeletal muscle at the single cell level), This also resulted in the opening of the Biochemistry and Molecular Exercise Physiology Laboratory (BMEP) at CSU Fullerton. The BMEP lab studies the acute responses and chronic adaptations of human skeletal muscle in response to high force, velocity, power and fatiguing exercise from the whole body, down to the individual muscle fiber and even into the individual DNA. Check this video they shot with Conor McGregor to measure the angular velocity of his spinning back kick! I stand corrected: this was 3 years ago! Not "recently" like I said in the introduction to this episode *blush*. I really enjoyed Andy Galpin’s interview on The Joe Rogan Experience which led me to ask him on to Corporate Warrior. Every now and again, I like to invite someone on to the show who isn’t from a HIT background and has a different opinion on what exercise is the most effective for various desirable outcomes. Whilst Andy does believe that HIT provides some value, he believes that traditional high intensity training falls short in meeting all of the requirements for optimising health, longevity and even muscle gain. Check out Andy's new book: Unplugged: Evolve from Technology to Upgrade Your Fitness, Performance, & Consciousness (Amazon US / Amazon UK) In this episode we cover: Andy's opinions on the pros and cons of the typical HIT protocol How Andy adds muscle to his athletes What Andy has changed his mind about regarding muscle adaptation/growth and post-workout nutrition timing in recent memory and much more This episode is brought to you by Hituni.com, providers of the best online courses in high intensity training that come highly recommended by Dr. Doug McGuff and Discover Strength CEO, Luke Carlson. Course contributors include world-class exercise experts like Drew Baye, Ellington Darden and Skyler Tanner. There are courses for both trainers and trainees. So even if you’re not a trainer but someone who practices HIT, this course can help you figure out how to improve your progress and get best results. Dr. Andy Galpin joins us today to talk SCIENCE. He is a Professor of Kinesiology at the Center for Sport Performance at California State University, Fullerton. He has a Ph.D. in Human Bioenergetics and is the founder and director of the Biochemistry and Molecular Exercise Laboratory. Why do certain types of training programs work better than others? Why do certain people respond to certain types of training better than others? Andy is a muscle scientist who studies muscle at the single cell level all the way up to performance to try to determine what happens in response to high intensity, high power, high velocity, high force exercise acutely and chronically. He is best known for studying "human thriving". What do we do to not just avoid being sick but how do we optimize? How do we thrive? He spends time examining those that do that so that we really understand what we're shooting for in terms of optimal health and performance. In this episode, we chat about things like why we think of science the wrong way, why hypertrophy training is so critical for long term development, the diabetes of dopamine, what happens when we eliminate all stress, and so much more. I admire his skill for communicating such complex topics in laymen's terms. His new book Unplugged is taking the best seller's list by storm. Make sure you support the message by grabbing a copy and leaving a review on Amazon! "In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is." — Yogi Berra Dr. Andy Galpin is a man on a mission. He spends the majority of his days researching and discovering new ways to develop and reach peak human performance. Andy received his Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science, followed by his Masters in Human Movement Sciences, and eventually earning his Ph.D. in Human Bioenergetics. His work and research have been published countless times in his efforts to prove what the human body is capable of achieving. He may not know it, but his research is finding if it's possible to become, yes, Too Fit. In preparation for this interview, we each wrote over two pages of notes that we wan
