Today we talk with Sam K. Horton about his debut novel Gorse. we also talk about ancient sites, standing stones, the Cornish landspape, about folklore and myth and about the process of writing and creating new worlds. An author of literary fantasy, Sam lives above the moor in North Cornwall, and draws on its wild landscape, wide skies, and windblown folklore for his work. Growing up on a sheep farm near Hereford, he left for London and trained as a costume designer working in film, theatre and opera before moving into visual art, still working with narratives, texts and stories. It was during his last project, surrounding the discovery and development of Eythin (an island lost off the coast of Cornwall, halfway between Boscastle and the Celtic Deep) that he found his talent for writing rich, detailed mythic worlds. This came as a surprise—despite a lifelong love of reading anything within reach, and over a decade working in libraries—but a welcome one.

In Essex alone, around 1000 people – predominantly women – were accused of witchcraft between the 1500s to 1800s, as part of the now infamous English witch trials. As the jail where many of the accused were held, Colchester Castle played a key role, and so Colchester Museums have teamed up with the Museum of British Folklore and the Museum of Witchcraft and Magic in Boscastle to create an exhibition about the witch trials, and the people who fell victim to them.In this week's Chops, Jen catches up with Mellany Robinson, projects manager of the British Museum of Folklore and co-curator of Wicked Spirits? As promised, Dr Helen Cornish (Goldsmiths, London) is back to discuss the Museum of Witchcraft and Magic in Boscastle, Cornwall. In her talk she explores how contemporary witches navigate the ‘unfamiliar' by experiencing the uncanny through magical consciousness as part of their occult practice. By focusing on St Nectan's Glen, the labyrinth of Rocky Valley, and the witch memorial of Joan Wytte, Cornish explores how modern witches intellectually rationalise their sense of place, and ‘find themselves' through childlike ideas of imagination. **** Like the show? For Episode #32 show we welcome Wilmar Taal to discuss, The Gnome Manuscript and its creator, J.H.W. Eldermans. The Gnome Manuscript is a part of a set of three books including, The Gnome Grimoire and The Gnome Compendium, the later two being due for publication with Troy Books. All three are based on the works of J.H.W. Eldermans concerning gnomes. The original source manuscript is lost but a copy is held in the Museum of witchcraft and magic at Boscastle. The artwork in the manuscript is remarkable, some of which you can see in the YouTube version of the podcast. It's worth having a look to get a sense of the complexity of this work. We discuss the elusive and complicated figure that is Eldermans. We discuss the importance of stories, place and community in our lives. In relation to Gnomes Wilmar proposes the areas most associated with Gnome mythology were previously lands of Celtic tribes and a residual belief of those people. Wilmar also reveals an unexpected possible origin myth of the Gnomes. Witte Wieven, also make an appearance. Translated the White woman who have almost identical mythology to the Banshee and Wilmar warns that if you see a Witte Wieven you have to run, they are not friendly. In the Plus show we further discuss what was Eldermans trying to achieve with the book and the stories about his engagement with local people regarding the Gnomes and a secret grimoire Eldermans penned covering a remarkable range of occult subjects, hinting at an ambition of producing a larger body of work of which the Gnome manuscript was a part. Wilmar goes on to discuss the sexual component to Eldermans work and what his view of magick was and what was needed to practice it. We also go through a story around Eldermans connections with Occult groups. If that sounds like it floats your boat join the Patreon and you'll get access to all previous Plus shows and much more. In 2000, the mysterious Dutch ‘Richel-Eldermans collection’ was donated to The Museum of Witchcraft and Magic in Boscastle where, in 2003, a Dutch speaking student assisted in deciphering some of the written materials in the collection. It was during this process that the student discovered a fascinating manuscript concerned with Dutch gnome-folklore, and alerted the Meertens Institute in Amsterdam who were happy to receive a copy of the ‘Gnome Manuscript’, as it became known, on CD-Rom. Another Dutch student subsequently graduated on a study of this manuscript, but still there were too many questions and mysteries concerning the information J.H.W. Eldermans collected throughout his life. The staff of the Museum of Witchcraft and Magic were most interested in the contents of this manuscript, and so a decision was made to publish a series of books that present translations of the intriguing handwritten content, with comments on the origins of the manuscript and studies of the places described therein. The information was categorized and this first part as ‘Origins, Habit and Culture’ and focuses on where the gnomes came from, what they were doing and what they expressed. The second part will look deeper into the magic concerning gnomes, and the third part will deal with leftover writings by Eldermans. Wilmar Taal is a Dutch cultural historian and author of ‘The Silent Listener – The Life and Works of J.H.W. Eldermans’ (Troy Books, 2018). He specializes in sagas, myths and the occult sciences. He lives in Koog aan de Zaan, The Netherlands, together with his wife, son and daughter and a spoilt rotten cat. We interviewed Wilmar to know about his new book and his adventures with Eldermans manuscripts.

“Cecil Hugh Williamson (1909-1999) is, I believe, one of the great unsung heroes of the twilight world of folklore and witchcraft. He is probably best known for founding the Museum of Witchcraft and Magic in Boscastle, North Cornwall, which he ran up until midnight on All Hallows Eve 1996; three years before his passing over in to the spirit world. Unbeknown to many however, this was just part of a colourful and magical career that spanned most of the 20th century. This included working in a Rhodesian tobacco plantation, the pre-war film industry, the British secret services and, most importantly, devoting his life to the study of traditional witchcraft”. Steve Patterson In 1996, whilst helping the then new owner Graham King in refurbishments to the Museum of Witchcraft and Magic, Steve happened upon a handwritten manuscript entitled simply ‘Witchcraft’ and containing an intriguing pot-pourri of esoterica from the hand of the Museum’s founder; Cecil Williamson. It is this manuscript which provides the basis for Steve’s book which includes a full annotated transcript of the ‘Witchcraft’ manuscript, a history of Cecil Williamson and the Museum of Witchcraft and Magic, a treatise on Cecil Williamson’s vision of traditional Witchcraft – the practices and the philosophy of the wayside witches, an account of his meetings with Aleister Crowley and Gerald Gardner, and a controversial account of his witnessing of the birth of ‘Wicca’. The book is both a valuable reliquary of practices for the traditional witch, and a resource for folklorists and historians alike; telling the tale of a hitherto largely ignored, but hugely influential episode in modern occult history, and one of the great unsung heroes of the twilight world of folklore and witchcraft. A full annotated transcript of Cecil Williamson’s “Witchcraft” manuscript. A History of Cecil Williamson and the Museum of Witchcraft. Bob Carswell delivers a weekly programme of great Manx Gaelic broadcasting and entertainment. In a timely fashion, William Gell's 1906 poem has brought us to St John's for the fair. However, he gives us a conundrum in referring to 'Glenfaba Bob', when none of the coroners at that time were named Robert at that time. He also gives us a glimpse of industrial history, with the fishing in Peel and the mining in Foxdale, before describing the beauty of the countryside, but also the destruction of a 20 or 30 tonne granite boulder - Godred Crovan's Stone - in St Mark's, broken up in the 1820s. Our story in Manx takes us to the finance industry, and some children who are perhaps strangely enthralled with their grandfather's tales of team leadership. Hallowe'en, Samhain or Allantide. However you view the time surrounding October 31st, it is an important part of our ritual year. It is traditionally a time when the veil between the worlds is thinned, when magic is more powerful and when spirits roam the Earth. Joining regular host Mark Norman on this edition of The Folklore Podcast is special guest Judith Hewitt. Judith is co-manager, with her husband Peter, of the world famous Museum of Witchcraft and Magic in Boscastle, Cornwall. Throughout 2016, the Museum has staged an exhibition looking at representations of Hallowe'en in the past and now. This week we talk with author Levannah Morgan who has just released her newest book which is entitled "A Witch's Mirror - The Art of Making Magic". Levannah reveals some of the details of secret rituals in which she has taken part, as well as describing beautifully her experiences with practical witchcraft - a type of witchcraft which can be seen as more personal and less ritualistic. She discusses special magic having to do with experiencing the sea and its tides as an alternative - and in fact an opposite - kind of meditation, while embracing and exalting the senses to a climax of perception. Cecil Williamson and Hereward Wake are discussed at length, especially in their function as mentors to Levannah, and the author recounts anecdotes, spells, and workings she experienced in their presence. Levannah Morgan is a former chair of The Museum of Witchcraft in Boscastle, Cornwall, England, which was founded by Cecil Williamson, beginning with a vast collection of paraphernalia he had amassed.

Sixth century Wales. An Irish Saint Tathan, son of Anna (daughter of Meurig) who has married Tathetus (Annan Ddu) in Ireland renounces the throne to travel on a Shite Martyrdom. He sets sail on a boat without oars and his boat arrives in the Severn and he disembarks at Portskewett to found one of the most glittering educational monasteries in Wales, There are miracles connected with him. The tale of the stag, mimicing that of Christ, guiving himself up for food. He is given the whole city of Caerwent. He trains Cadoc, Gwynlliw's son, who becomes one of the most famous Welsh saints. I tell of my trip to Cornwall, to Tintagel and Boscastle and also to the Chapel of Fontrevault in the Normal Wall at Caerwent, from which there is a short soundseeing.A very British 'email' segment and a final partof a letter of St Ignatius of Antioch, one of the people trained in Rome in the early church of Peter and Paul. Please pray for Mary.

I sing the 'Our Father' at the end of this programme. Consideration of the preparations for Easter and my upcoming visit to Cornwall, where I intend to do soundseeing tours of St Materiana and at Minster Church in Boscastle. Photos already on www.maryinmonmouth@blogspot.com The birth of Gwynlliw to Glwys King of a district of Gwent. Gwynlliw (Woolos)has to kill a lot of people to establish pace, then can't stop and uses Pill (Pill gwenlly-literally an inlet of water belonging to Gwynlliw)to raid passing ships. steal their booty and kill the crews. Cadoc (his son) andsaintly wife Gwladys pray for his conversion from his wicked ways. Gwynlliw has the vision of an angel and changes, living the life of a celibate couple with Gwladys until they separate and she joins a convent at Bassaleg-or nearby to Bassaleg Church, and he remains a hermit there on Stow Hill, having built his Church and dedicated it to Our Lady. The statue of the bull placed in Newport town centre should be white-to reflect the next world, and his tomb can still be seen in the centre of the present Anglican Cathedral. The Catholic Church on Stow Hill is dedicated to our Lady as well, and is the Church where I was married and our Son christened. There are marvellous stained glass windows of the Newport Saints in both churches. Finally I sing the Our Father -my own recording. Please enjoy it as an Easter gift.
