The holy evening of Epiphany and Mary talks about Old Christmas Day and Epiphany Customs, and especially the Twelfth Night Celebrations disapproved of by the Victorians and the games which were once commonplace and enjoyable social and family interactions. Mary takes us to a carol service at Gloucester Cathedral where her son sings bass in the chapel Choir of the King's School .The service begins with the Kyrie de Angelis and then we hear the choir singing Three Kings by Peter Cornelius over the chorale 'How Brightly shines the Morning Star' . This is followed by the beautiful words of Pope Leo in 440 giving us the same message as today, drawing the link between Egypt , the passover, the sacrificed Lamb, and the Eucharist and the sacrificed Lamb of God. Finally we are treated to some of the power of Gloucester Cathedral organ. Future plans are to file podcasts which should have gone up last year from holidays and so forth as I went to some super places! Happy New Year to you all and God bless you always,

Capturing the excitement of the relics of St Therese arriving in Cardiff and the Welsh greeting she is given as thousands flock to the Metropolital Cathedral from all over Wales. This is obviously 'live' and so there are many intrusive noises, but it does give an idea of the beauty of the singing of the Cathedral Choir (Choirmaster Dominic Neville)and magnificent organ playing of David Neville, so powerful at times , combined with the incense, flowers, thousands of candles, it made the senses reel! We resume the podcast with BENEDICTION and the wonderful singing of the O Salutaris , prayers and Tantum ergo. Then rosary and the Litany of the Saints, the wonderful entrance of the reliquary(you can hear the people clapping outside) and address of Archbishop Peter and Bishops Tom and Edwin and then the wonderful Mass of Evangelisation  (the choir singing Os Justi by Bruckner and Agnus Dei from Schubert Mass in G) Confession was going on most of the time as well. As Archbishop Peter said, Wales has never seen the like before as people from all over Wales came to see the relics of a little saint who never left her Carmel (convent) but prayed unceasingly for the world and for Priests and the Conversion of Wales. St David Looked down on that huge congregation too, his words 'Always remember the little things' echoing exactly the teaching of the little doctor iof the church, who had 'thrown herself into the arms of Jesus'. This is a treasure of a podcast. If you like it, download and put onto a CD to keep. Most of all, it shows that the faith is alive and well in Wales!

This podcast on a warm but very windy day in the valley of a mountain, is what we found when we visited Gwytherin in North Wales, where St Winifride is reported to have been buried. Legend has it that the bones still remain there under the four ancient yews. A local person tells me of the problems faced by churchgoers, as even with large numbers of pilgrims Conway Council seem to have denied planning permission to the two members of the congregation who bought it from the Church in Wales to re-open it for services. There are ancient Druid Stones- and it is almost certainly an ancient site when St Beuno opened the 'Llan' there and installed his niece St Winifride as Superior, a place where she worked for thirty years more and then died. I will deal more with Winifride (or Gwenfrewi's) story when we talk specifically about the well.

During the Middle Ages in Gwent, as all over Britain, the wounds of Christ were a subject of intense devotion. By the time of the 6th Century and St David, when the Saint at Llandewi Brefi bravely refuted thhe heresies of Pelagius, reports tell us that he preached before five large candles, representative of all the wounds of Christ. The Wesleyan hymn ;Lo he comes with Clouds Descending, mentions the scars which have captured the imagination of many Christians. Every Eye shall now behold him Robed in dreadful majesty Thouse who set at naught and sold hi, pierced and nailed him to a tree.... Those dear tokens of his Passion Still his dazzling body bears cause of endless exultation To his ransomed worshippers with what rapture Gaze we on those glorious scars!! I hope you find this beautiful devotion uplifting for the season of Lent. It loosely uses the prayers from the St Anthony Prayerbook, but I have adapted them slightly.

1066 and William the Conqueror has taken England and laid waste to Northumbria. He places powerful Lords on the border with Wales as he wants no trouble with them at the moment. These Lords are also a danger to him and fighting the Welsh will keep them busy. In Gwent the petty kings, Aeddan, Griffith, Meredith, all fight against each other and the Normans are able to take the area quite easily. They build castles at Monmouth, Abergavenny, Usk, Chepstow, Llangua,Goldcliff, Skenfrith and Grosmont and with them come the first wave of the building of Priories to administer these castle, providing for the spiritual needs of the Normans and their new people, and a Civil Service for the Norman Lords and Barons, writing their legal documents , collecting tithes etc, but also providing social services for the local people. (See blog post on Michaelstone y Fedw http://www.maryinmonmouth.blogspot.com Caerleon has its own Church with a holy Bishop Amphilbus, all of whom are killed in a presecution. We are not sure of which but the Tredunnock tombstone of St Julius Julianus, though buried in the Roman way was to theEast. The National Museum of Wales have authenticated it to the 2nd-3rd century AD so earlier than Diocletian's persecution. Julius and Aaron were both citizens of Caerleon, the whole church was massacred, but they are Roman citizens were allowed to die with swords in their hand. We learn Julius died on the Banks of the Usk next to where the Mansion used to be, the Mansion which was built with stone from his chapel, but seemed to have become disused, possibly because of endless Danish attacks which occurred when the Romans had left. It is even possible he may have been reburied at Tredunnock. Aaron was buried just over the first bridge on the Llanhennock Road in an area still called St Aarons. We then make a jump to the death of Alban, also mistimed by Bede and finally to the attacks of the Danes occurring periodically to the end of the Milennium. They receive Christianity as the flowering of their Otherworld beliefs. Brigid's father is far from happy and tries to make her marry but she thwarts his wishes in a startling way and sails to Wales where she begins a cult, with her kindness, flowing generosity and motherliness. She also does miracles, getting cattle to give mile more freely and turning smelts into butter. Finally she returns to her 'Church of the Oak' at Kildare and gets a local hermit to study to be a Bishop so they could have Mass. A flame was lit in the firehouse to the eternal glory of God, and which the Normans found when they arrived. After her death her body was buried at Kildare and then to Downpatrick. It is believed that her skull was, however removed at this time, and later was brought to Portugal by knights who wanted to preserve it. It was placed in a reliquary where it can be observed today. Good because the agents of Henry VIII completely desicrated the shrine of Patrick and the relics of St Brigid. On the blog www.maryinmonmouth.blogspot.com you can see a video of this shrine. He returned to found a small monastery higher up the mountain on the Mynydd Maen at Cwmbran but finally leaves to return to North Wales, where he had been before. For nearly a thousand years people remembered him as the one who taught them fighting and strife were evil. He was a patron saint of peaceful living and farming. someone carved a statue of him to remember him when he died and he is portrayed in armour on a stag (which locals called a horse as the local archdeacon had had the animal mutilated. The statue of Derfel himself at the English 'reformation' was secreted and burned at Smithfield along with the Cwmbran one. Unfortunately and horrifically it was used to burn the gentle friar John Forrest, who had refused to accept Henry VIII in place of the Pope and died a horrible death, while being denied the Blessed Sacrament and foreced to listen to the preaching of an odious bishop of the new order. The Story of St David Lewis, associated with Llantarnam Abbey and arrested opposite St Michael and All Angels Church will be told in much more detail later on. She was famous for her work with lepers.Details of rituals (slightly shonky) are given on www.maryinmonmouth.blogspot.com which show how people were paying for miracles at her well there even until recent times. Tecla came south, set up at the rock at Beachley also later occupied by st Twrog, and worked for the sick there, It is possi ble in view of the wild and remote nature of the place she had succumbed to Leprosy herself-but this is pure speculation. The rock and little chapel are shown on the blog, but is unlikely to have been Teclas. She is murdered by marauding Saxons and seems to have lived a deal earlier than our other saints, She was undoubtedly named after Tecla of Iconium in Laeodocia and was a disciple of St Paul who wished to dedicate herself to God and was many times tortured and threatened eventually founding a small colony and seemingly buried at St Paul Outside the Walls in Rome. Her cult spread all over the Church from East to West and many young women followed her example with admiration.

He sets sail on a boat without oars and his boat arrives in the Severn and he disembarks at Portskewett to found one of the most glittering educational monasteries in Wales, There are miracles connected with him. The tale of the stag, mimicing that of Christ, guiving himself up for food. He is given the whole city of Caerwent. He trains Cadoc, Gwynlliw's son, who becomes one of the most famous Welsh saints. I tell of my trip to Cornwall, to Tintagel and Boscastle and also to the Chapel of Fontrevault in the Normal Wall at Caerwent, from which there is a short soundseeing.A very British 'email' segment and a final partof a letter of St Ignatius of Antioch, one of the people trained in Rome in the early church of Peter and Paul. Please pray for Mary.

I sing the 'Our Father' at the end of this programme. Consideration of the preparations for Easter and my upcoming visit to Cornwall, where I intend to do soundseeing tours of St Materiana and at Minster Church in Boscastle. Photos already on www.maryinmonmouth@blogspot.com The birth of Gwynlliw to Glwys King of a district of Gwent. Gwynlliw (Woolos)has to kill a lot of people to establish pace, then can't stop and uses Pill (Pill gwenlly-literally an inlet of water belonging to Gwynlliw)to raid passing ships. steal their booty and kill the crews. Cadoc (his son) andsaintly wife Gwladys pray for his conversion from his wicked ways. Gwynlliw has the vision of an angel and changes, living the life of a celibate couple with Gwladys until they separate and she joins a convent at Bassaleg-or nearby to Bassaleg Church, and he remains a hermit there on Stow Hill, having built his Church and dedicated it to Our Lady. The statue of the bull placed in Newport town centre should be white-to reflect the next world, and his tomb can still be seen in the centre of the present Anglican Cathedral. The Catholic Church on Stow Hill is dedicated to our Lady as well, and is the Church where I was married and our Son christened. There are marvellous stained glass windows of the Newport Saints in both churches. Finally I sing the Our Father -my own recording. Please enjoy it as an Easter gift. The Original tenth century account of the life of David of Wales. We take up the story as David goes to preach against the heretical teaching of Pelagius. He defends church teaching as to the divinity of Christ and is praised by all the people as his voice is louad and can be heard. We learn the ground rose up beneath him, although he may have levitated. He founds monasteries and becomes a great pastor and church leader in Britain. (remember there were no Anglo Saxons yet!)which is all Celtic. David founds monasteries in Glastonbury in Gloucester, Cirencester, Leominster and many opther places. Finally the angel arrives to tell him to prepare to meet the Lord Jesus whom he had faithfully served all his life, and Rhygfarch tells the story of his death with poetry, sensitivity and rejoicing in the most glorious way he could. There follows a genealogy and Mass prayers for the feast Day of St David of Wales. It is worth remembering that until the 16th century schism, March 1st was a holiday throughout Britain.Normal Mary in Monmouth podcasts resume soon!
