On Friday's show: A number of fascinating and controversial bills are getting hearings these days in Austin over abortion, religion in schools, and high speed rail. We discuss them all.First, we examine a bill that would directly impact a long-debated proposed high speed rail line between Houston and Dallas. Then, we learn about legislation that would offer doctors and nurses guidance on when they could, in the rarest circumstances, provide an abortion in Texas. And this week's “non-expert” panel weighs in on bills in Austin that would bring religion more directly into Texas public schools as they break down The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly of the week. And producer Brenda Valdivia completes her quest to create the ultimate Houston sandwich.

Before leaving home today, you may have checked the mirror to adjust your shirt, brush your teeth, or put on makeup. And maybe you took a moment to say, "I wish this were different." Plumper lips, smaller waist, or, as the kids say, "Face and body snatched." Plastic surgery may have even crossed your mind. After all, social media ads have popped up on your feed, or recently a friend has suddenly looked more... refreshed. But what does it mean to get plastic surgery? What happens to the body and mind after a drastic change in our appearance? And is cosmetic surgery so plastic anymore? For the show's first half, we discuss what patients should consider when choosing a surgeon, what to expect while recovering, and warning signs in plastic surgery tourism. Then, with so many options- and ads- for plastic surgery, those struggling over their appearance may feel that it's their only hope. In the 1970s, an anonymous teen girl's diary was an instant publishing success. Published as "a real diary," the book warned parents and teens about the dangers of drug use. "Alice" chronicled her struggle as a teen runaway addict. Her sudden sad end shook parents as they grappled to understand their teen's emotions during the hippie-era rebellion. Author Rick Emerson spent years researching the supposed memoir's actual author as different publications of the book changed their stance on the diary from nonfiction autobiographical to sometimes wholly fictional books. Who was Beatrice Sparks, the woman behind the troubled teen literature? And where did publishers draw the line between fact and fiction? And how did a "diary" aimed at teens change the law against recreational drugs? We spent the hour with Emmerson over the cultural and personal consequences of Sparks publications and what it means to be a "real diary." Below is a clip of the movie Go Ask Alice, based on the book of the same name. Guest Rick Emerson Author of Unmask Alice: LSD, Satanic Panic, and the Imposter Behind the World's Most Notorious Diaries This episode of Town Square is guest-hosted by Brenda Valdivia, in for Ernie Manouse.
