When you're busy, it's easy to let things like project plans, status reports and well-planned meetings fall by the wayside. But when these things slip, so does communication and trust with stakeholders. No matter how you work—agile, waterfall, hybrid, etc.—you have a plan in place. There are a series of steps that you will take to get the work done. And to keep things moving, you'll need stakeholders to be involved and in the loop. They need to know when and where to plug in so you can negotiate risks, get feedback and meet deadlines. Brett Harned, Founder of the Digital PM Summit and Director of Education at TeamGantt, outlines three solid PM tools that can help foster better communication, more trusting relationships and a brighter future for your projects. Listen in.
It's the week after the Digital PM Summit and we have so many people to thank. Agency owners, business developers, operations directors, and more finally have a place to connect and create. Bureau of Digital members are made up of all types of digital professionals. They are a diverse group with a common ground. This private community has the support of a network of like-minded experts. The bureau has always prioritized bringing people in the digital industry together. Brett Harned has nearly 20 years of experience under his belt in communications and project management. Whether you’re a seasoned PMP or a brand new project leader with no formal training, you’ve likely thought about ways to level up your skillset to make you a better PM and your career. But where do you go to learn? Sure, TeamGantt is a great starting point for classes, resources, and templates, but there’s more. In this episode, Brett talked to PM trainer Rachel Gertz about PM education, and a few related topics: Focusing on the right things as a PM, not just your plans or process How to continue to learn and grow as an experienced PM The value of certifications Where project management is headed Managing risk, and not trying to control everything The advantages of being in command of facts, which allows you to be relaxed The conversation went in a few different directions, but always came back to the value of being open and ready to learn. As project leaders, we have to adapt and speak to a variety of people at many levels in organizations about a wide-range of topics. It's a tough gig
“Until designers can speak the language of business (and to some degree talk their talk), we’re just going to be the people that make things look good." An apology: I had some unknown issues with my gear during this recording so the quality suffered a bit. However, it was such a great conversation I just had to post it! Greg Storey is an Executive Director of Design at USAA, captain of industry, and an all around badass designer and leader of designers. Project management encompasses an important set of skills, such as communication, planning, and forecasting. But does someone need the title of project manager to actually do the work? In Brett Harned’s book Project Management for Humans, he makes the argument that project management is always needed on projects but the role itself is less important. You should focus on the skills in order to manage projects well. In this podcast, Brett shares some of the highlights from his book. Our hosts, Adam Churchill and Jared Spool dig into those highlights, in particular, whether designers already possess the skills that project managers have.

Digital project management has been a part of the web from the beginning, even if we didn't call it that when we started. As the digital services industry matured, we loosely formalized the role of a digital project manager. But the gaps and differences from one shop to another has led to some confusion. Especially with the recent trend of the account managers being brought on at digital agencies. And now, a tangled web of AM, PM and DPM has us all a little confused as to who should do what. Listen in as Brett Harned shares why we should focus on clarifying the role and not the title. And more specifically, the human beings we task with the responsibilities.
This week on the Boagworld show we are joined by Brett Harned, Sam Barnes and Holly Davis to talk Agile. This weeks show is sponsored by Fullstory and Freshbooks.
