Just like that it's over. A 30 win season comes to an end in Washington D.C. as St. John's loses to Duke 80-75. It took heroic efforts from Cameron Boozer, Caleb Foster and Isaiah Evans as they would power the #1 overall seed passed the 5 seed Johnnies. Zuby Ejiofor, Ruben Prey, Bryce Hopkins did all they could to try and will St. John's to victory. A 10 point lead in the 2nd half was not enough as the Duke zone threw off St. John's and their paint prowess got them back into it. Ultimately the Johnnies backcourt let them down as they had too many times this season, and it was too much to overcome one more time. So we reflect on the season, the gratitude and appreciation and we look ahead to the Portal and St. John's restocking and restarting for next year.Follow the podcast on Twitter:@EyeonStormPod = Eye on the Storm Podcast#sjubb
For the first time since 1999, St. John's is headed to the Sweet Sixteen! After leading by 14 points in the 2nd half, Kansas mounted a come back. Tied with seconds left on the clock, Dylan "Church Bells" Darling drove to the rim and scored as the buzzer sounded sending the Red Storm to Washington DC. A game which saw Darryn Peterson make shots like a top NBA draft pick, Bryce Hopkins hit a career high six threes, Zuby Ejiofor scored 18 points and Ian Jackson contributed strongly. Rick Pitino writes another chapter of greatness in his third year as a the Johnnies leader. St. John's delivers a signature moment, knocking off Kansas in a game that had everything momentum swings, controversy, and a fearless finish. What looked like a potential collapse turned into one of the program's biggest wins in decades, fueled by confidence, composure, and a head coach who never blinked in the biggest moments. Evan Roberts and Tiki Barber break down the sequence that changed everything, from Bryce Hopkins' crucial three to Dylan Darling demanding the ball and delivering the game-winner despite struggling all night. They also dive into Rick Pitino's influence on the team's mentality, Kansas' late-game mistakes, and what this gutsy win means as St. John's prepares for a heavyweight showdown with Duke.
St. John's looked headed for disaster before delivering one of the program's biggest wins in decades, and Evan Roberts and Tiki Barber break down every twist from the dramatic victory over Kansas. From late-game panic to full-on euphoria, they dig into why this wasn't just a thrilling finish, but a defining moment for Rick Pitino's turnaround of the Red Storm. They spotlight Dylan Darling's fearless game-winner, Bryce Hopkins' enormous late three, and the calm Pitino projected as Kansas erased a double-digit lead. Evan and Tiki also get into the coaching decisions, the emotional reaction from St. John's fans, and what this escape could mean with Duke waiting next in a massive Sweet 16 matchup.
The game was out of reach shortly after the ball was thrown in the air. Before most fans were in their seats it was 13-0. Northern Iowa was dead in the water. Led by Zuby Ejiofor who had a bad game by his standards, Bryce Hopkins continued strong play, and a balanced attack from the bench, St. John's got their second NCAA tournament win in as many years under Rick Pitino. Now as a matchup with Kansas on Sunday awaits, the Red Storm will have to cram to get ready fro Bill Self and his Jayhawks.Follow the podcast on Twitter:@EyeonStormPod = Eye on the Storm Podcast#sjubb
St. John's dismantled Creighton at MSG on Saturday to make it 13 wins in a row. The Johnnies are in first place in the Big East at 15-1 in conference play. Dylan Darling has continued to shine and the front court of Zuby Ejiofor, Bryce Hopkins and Dillon Mitchell continue to be unstoppable. Plus we start talking about the week ahead, games against UConn and Villanova, the tournament is on the horizon and seeding is a big talking point. Bryce Hopkins returned to Providence and all hell broke loose. The guys break it all down.
St. John's extended it's winning streak to 11 with a 79-69 win over Providence to avenge their only conference loss of the season. But most people will not be talking about the game but instead the fracas that took place short after halftime. Six players were ejected after Duncan Powell's dirty foul on Bryce Hopkins caused an all-out brawl. With a short bench and in a hostile environment, St. John's would not be denied as Dylan Darling scored 18 of his 23 points in the 2nd half to help lead St. John's to victory. The Red Storm have improved to 20-5, 13-1.Follow the podcast on Twitter:@EyeonStormPod = Eye on the Storm Podcast#sjubb
If there was any doubt before if this team had guts, that goes out the window. In back to back games St. John's was down by at least 15 points in the second half and dug in deep. They came away with two wins, and at the Cintas Center, it was St. John's having to rely on once again use their defense to lead to offense. Thanks to Dillon Mitchell, Bryce Hopkins and Dylan Darling, the Johnnies made sure that Father Knew Best once again and St. John's got Rick Pitino win #900 - coming over Xavier coached by his son Richard. St. John's has now won six games in a row.Follow the podcast on Twitter:@EyeonStormPod = Eye on the Storm Podcast#sjubb
It was Ian Jackson's best game to date in a St. John's uniform. He finished with 18 points while Dillon Mitchell added 10 points and 10 rebounds. Not to be outdone Bryce Hopkins gave us 20 points 6 boards while captain Zuby added 17 and 7. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Make it four wins in a row for St. John's as they improve to 6-1 to start Big East play following an 86-79 win against Villanova. A trip to the Main Line proved to be friendly confines for St. John's who have now won four of their six conference games on the road. They led by as many as 17 thanks to the best games of the season by Bryce Hopkins and Ian Jackson. Moments that previously caused St. John's to stumble, were answered by big shots and good defense. St. John's has seemingly turned a corner since that Providence loss, as they have a ton of momentum behind them.Follow the podcast on Twitter:@EyeonStormPod = Eye on the Storm Podcast#sjubb
That's more like it. A dominant second half played out in the complete opposite way of the last game as St. John's used their defense to get a much needed road win. Thanks to Lefteris Liotopoulos and Ruben Prey plus Bryce Hopkins, the Red Storm dominated Butler and followed the formula that worked so well last year. St. John's relied on the three main returnees to win this game, as well as great connection on defense using the press and forcing 21 Butler turnovers. Picking up a much needed Quad 1 win, St. John's will look to take this momentum to Omaha as they will look to make it a road warrior week against Creighton.Follow the podcast on Twitter:@EyeonStormPod = Eye on the Storm Podcast#sjubb
After two weeks away, Providence returned to the floor with a rousing victory over St. John's at Madison Square Garden. We break down all facets of the game -- including Jamier Jones and Stefan Vaaks stepping up, lineup and strategic changes, Bryce Hopkins' challenging day, a Friartown takeover, and so much more.
In a wide-ranging, high-octane interview, Hall of Famer Rick Pitino joins Brandon Tierney to discuss the state of St. John's basketball and his storied career. Pitino gets brutally honest about his current squad, admitting they lack the veteran dominance of last year's team and issuing a public challenge to Bryce Hopkins to become an "alpha dog" or risk his NBA dreams. The conversation turns fiery and nostalgic as Pitino recounts a "hysterical" story from the birth of WFAN, remembering how "clinical moron" callers wanted him fired while his Knicks were in first place. The Coach also settles New York's greatest debates, naming Pearl Washington and Kenny Anderson as the ultimate handles and Chris Mullin as the city's premier marksman. To wrap it up, BT shares a legendary personal story of an all-night bar session with Pitino that felt like a scene straight out of The Godfather.
BT and Sal dive into the state of St. John's basketball following a tough loss to Iowa State in the stacked Vegas tournament. Tierney expresses his frustration, stating the team is having a "rough time finding their identity" and is filled with "puppies" who lack the "dog" mentality of last year's squad. He questions whether point guard Dylan Darling is a full-time solution and notes that star forwards Zuby Ejiofor and Bryce Hopkins seem to be playing in each other's way. The hosts lament the loss of the old Big East rivalries (like St. John's vs. Syracuse) due to the "unforgivable" nature of conference realignment. The segment wraps up by looking ahead to the Johnnies' pivotal matchup against Baylor, demanding a bounce-back performance.

With two big time players already added, a busy 10 days in Queens saw St. John's get commitments from sharpshooter Stanford transfer Oziyah Sellers and New York native and McDonalds All-American Ian Jackson. The emphasis on reshaping the St. John's offense is apparent as Coach Pitino and the staff have loaded up with fire power. Jackson and Sellers are both elite three point shooters who should compliment each other well on the floor. Adding them with Joson Sanon and Bryce Hopkins gives St. John's a lot to work with especially when you add in First Team All-Big East member, captain Zuby Ejiofor.Discussing the additions, plus the departures and rumors, plus what else is on the horizon this offseason and more!Follow the podcast on Twitter:@EyeonStormPod = Eye on the Storm Podcast#sjubb

Griffin Warner and Big East Ben talk CBB betting for this weekend. The guys also give out best bets. Need for Seeds College Basketball Podcast - Episode Summary This episode of the Need for Seeds College Basketball Podcast, hosted by Griffin Warner and Big East Ben, dives into key matchups, team insights, and player performance in college basketball leading into the weekend. Topics range from recapping recent games to predicting outcomes for upcoming matchups. The hosts also share their best bets and provide promotional deals for their listeners. Speaker and Quote Analysis (with timestamps) Opening Recap and Banter (0:14 - 3:20) Griffin Warner summarizes their last episode's best bets performance: a 2-1 record. A humorous moment arises as he explains this was due to an additional guest contributor, Marquette84, who maintained a perfect betting record. Big East Ben reflects on Arizona State picks, adding a family anecdote. His father offered casual but pointed insights about coaches like Bobby Hurley, indicating skepticism about Arizona State's coaching strength. Observations on Recent Games (3:21 - 6:52) The duo notes the SEC's dominance over the ACC (11-2) in non-conference play, highlighting Clemson's win as a key bright spot. Isaiah Evans of Duke receives praise from Ben for his shooting abilities, while Villanova's victory over Cincinnati underscores the resurgence of Big East teams. Northwestern vs. Illinois Preview (9:45 - 14:25) Big East Ben describes Northwestern's struggles, highlighting their "cursed" nature in close games, such as near losses to Dayton and Iowa. He notes their key player, Nick Martinelli, consistently scores 23-25 points per game. Illinois' defensive prowess (ranked #1 in effective field goal percentage) is discussed, although some of their numbers appear inflated. Griffin backs Northwestern (+3) due to their strong home record against the spread. Kentucky vs. Gonzaga Analysis (16:55 - 22:36) Ben discusses Gonzaga's offensive efficiency and Kentucky's reliance on perimeter shooting rather than inside scoring. He projects Gonzaga as a slight favorite (-3.5), favoring their robust rebounding and three-pronged interior attack. Marquette vs. Wisconsin Matchup (22:38 - 29:14) Marquette's injuries (notably Chase Ross) are emphasized as challenges, but Ben notes freshmen Royce Parnum and Demarius Owens are stepping up effectively. Despite their resilience, Ben cautiously backs Wisconsin due to their disciplined, turnover-averse play style. Ohio State vs. Rutgers (29:14 - 32:48) Ohio State's recent loss to Maryland (50-17 at halftime) underscores their struggle without rim protection. Rutgers' young talent impresses, though their road performance remains untested. Ben leans toward Rutgers if the line is favorable (-5.5), while Griffin supports Ohio State. Texas A&M vs. Texas Tech at Neutral Site (32:48 - 36:29) Texas A&M's top-15 offense, built on rebounding and free throws, contrasts with Texas Tech's weak early schedule and inconsistent offensive output. Ben favors a low-scoring game (under 140 total points), while Griffin backs Texas Tech as a more polished and competitive team. Player and Team Analysis Players Isaiah Evans (Duke): Lauded as a sharpshooter, prompting questions about his limited playing time. Nick Martinelli (Northwestern): Reliable scorer with consistent performances. David Green (URI): Compared to Tony Allen for his defensive prowess, complemented by offensive contributions. Teams Villanova: Back in form, led by the return of Bryce Hopkins. Illinois: Defensive efficiency anchors their game, though some results raise questions about consistency. Marquette: Injuries test depth, but young players are stepping up. Texas A&M: Effective at grinding out wins but struggles with shooting efficiency. Learn more about your ad choices. Welcome to the latest edition of the Providence Journal College Basketball Podcast. This is Bill Koch, sports writer for The Journal. I'm joined as always by Nick Coit, sports director at ABC6 and the weekend co-host of Cordischi and Coit on WEEI Providence. Bryce Hopkins suffered a season-ending knee injury Wednesday night (3:30) and Providence's 2023-24 campaign now veers into the unknown (8:05). The Friars fell to Seton Hall and face an uncertain road that starts with a visit to Creighton. URI looks like a new team with David Green eligible and David Fuchs back from concussion protocol (21:15). The Rams rallied past Saint Joseph's in a Wednesday stunner and could be a factor in the Atlantic 10 moving forward. Saturday brings women's conference action across the state. URI (40:10) and Providence (50:05) will host St. Bonaventure and St. John's, respectively. More on the Rams and Friars here. Bryant's women host UMBC on Saturday after an opening America East loss at Albany (60:35). The Great Danes on paper figured to be a much tougher challenge than the Retrievers -- the Bulldogs will be looking to bounce back. Bryant's men begin America East play at UMBC on Saturday (65:35). The Bulldogs have survived a meatgrinder of a nonconference schedule and should be primed to make a run in the league. Brown's men lost a comfortable lead and fell to Vermont in their nonconference finale (70:05). The Bears need a fresh start in the Ivy League after a latest tough setback. Brown's women also jump into Ivy League play this weekend with a trip to Dartmouth (77:50). The Bears could be in line for a postseason berth after a strong trip through their nonconference schedule. Thanks as always for listening. Hope your 2024 is off to a great start.

Can Kentucky basketball get a win in the NCAA tournament over the Providence Friars? On today's episode of Locked On Kentucky, Lance Dawe previews the Kentucky Wildcats' game vs Providence basketball in March Madness. John Calipari needs to get the team back on track in the postseason, and the Friars stand in the way of UK earning their first postseason win in far too long. Dawe breaks down the numbers on Providence. While an efficient offense with Bryce Hopkins at the helm, are there flaws underneath the surface on this team? How does Kentucky defend in the frontcourt? Oscar Tshiebwe doesn't have to worry about size in the paint, and Kentucky doesn't have to worry about a deep bench rotation (in theory). Does Tshiebwe have a good game? How important is it that he plays well? Does Antonio Reeves continue scoring at the rate he has? How do Chris Livingston and Jacob Toppin fare vs the Friars? It's going to be a tough one, BBN.
