CBS 13's Jake Gadon joined the show to talk Alex Karaban and more on the Kings.
0:00 .... Ross hello and welcome, introduces the panelists, and dedicates show #254 to Sam Mitchell, who was drafted #54 overall in the 1985 NBA Draft. 0:58 ... Giannis Antetokounmpo is now a member of the Miami Heat after the Bucks traded him on Monday night. The guys react to the trade and feel like the Bucks took a better deal from Miami than Boston was willing to offer with their package involving Jaylen Brown. 5:35 ... The Heat will need to add some shooting if they want to put a team out there that can compete even though they've added a Hall of Famer in Giannis. Ross feels that Miami can't go "cheap" and has to stay aggressive. 10:14 ... The Heat have been excellent at developing talent over the years and they will find some diamonds in the rough to complement Giannis and Bam Adebayo. 10:55 ... Ross shares his "wish list" of guys he wants the Heat to go after during the next few months. 12:00 ... The guys discuss the future for the Bucks after losing their best player. Ross feels like they may even improve on their record from last season under new coach Taylor Jenkins. Bruce was having flashbacks to 1975 when Milwaukee traded another superstar player who went on to great success with his new team. World B does not share Ross's optimism about the Bucks prospects next season. 17:10 ... Now that Jaylen Brown knows he was on the trading block, can he return to the Celtics feeling good about his relationship with the team and with fellow star Jayson Tatum? 21:49 ... Julius Randle is traded from Minnesota to Brooklyn in a three team trade that also has Nik Claxton going from the Nets to the Bulls and the Wolves shedding salary and signing Ayo Dosunmu to a contract extension. The deal frees "Nuclear Naz" Reid to start at power forward for the Wolves. 26:01 ... The guys examine the first round of the draft on Tuesday with an extended discussion of AJ Dybantsa to Washington, Darryn Peterson to Utah, and Cameron Boozer to Memphis. 30:12 ... The guys discuss the big winners in the first round ... Bruce likes OKC drafting 7'3" Aday Mara, who could develop into a defender that can battle Victor Wembanyama more effectively than Chet Holmgren did in the playoffs. 31:14 ... Bruce liked Sacramento choosing Alex Karaban, who reminds him of former Kings sharpshooter Peja Stojakovic. 32:38 ... World B liked the draft choices that Charlotte made with Christian Anderson from Texas Tech and Zuby Ejiafor from St John's. He also liked Kingston Flemings going to Atlanta as their point guard of the future. Ross really liked how Memphis snagged Karim Lopez at #21 along with Cam Boozer at #3 and also stockpiled some additional picks with some trades. 36:06 .... Biggest losers? Bruce cited the seven teams that did not have draft picks in the first round. World B felt the Nets messed up their first round pick by passing on Darius Acuff and choosing Mikel Brown. 38:21 ... Bruce has a final thought about his work on the NBA Draft between 2003-2017 when he was at ESPN. Watching the fantasy become a reality for the draftees and their families is something that he never got tired of witnessing 39:21 ... The Chicago Bulls draft rumors are heating up fast, and Bryson Graham may already be showing how aggressive he is willing to be in his first offseason leading the front office.According to reports, the Bulls are one of the teams that have reached out to the Washington Wizards about the possibility of trading up for the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NBA Draft. Is this real momentum, or just due diligence from a new front office doing its job?Haize breaks down why this is FACTS OR CAP, what it means that Chicago reportedly has no interest in moving off the No. 4 pick unless it is to move up, and why the Bulls are in position to reshape the rebuild with picks No. 4, No. 15, and No. 38.The show also dives into several potential second-round targets at No. 38, including Zuby Ejiofor, Milan Momcilovic, Alex Karaban, Tarris Reed Jr., and Joshua Jefferson. Could the Bulls find a defensive identity piece, a floor-spacing forward, or a high-IQ role player deep in this draft?Plus, the Bulls head coaching search continues, with names like Chris Quinn, Micah Nori, Sean Sweeney, Dave Bliss, and Tiago Splitter confirmed as candidates. With interviews ongoing and the process expected to stretch into June, Haize discusses why this hire matters just as much as the draft itself. Can Bryson Graham nail the coach, maximize the picks, and finally give Bulls fans a real long-term direction? In the latest episode of The Michigan Basketball Insider, Sam Webb and Tim McCormick preview the national championship game between Michigan and Connecticut. Tim begins by highlighting Michigan's dominant interior defense and improved three-point shooting in its win over Arizona. He praises Aday Mara for significantly raising his draft stock, potentially into the lottery, and credits Elliot Cadeau's defense as a key factor in the victory. Tim also notes Trey McKenney's shooting has put the freshman on NBA draft boards. The discussion then shifts to the upcoming matchup with UConn, focusing on Danny Hurley's tactical strengths, Tarris Reed's development, and Alex Karaban's versatility. They address Yaxel Lendeborg's knee and ankle injuries, and discuss strategies to protect him defensively, as well as the possible impact of Solo Ball's foot injury for UConn. Although both expect a tougher contest than against Arizona, they predict a close Michigan victory. Final Four vs Arizona Starts at 0:51 Dave has a new nickname. Was this game... a let down? You could have maybe predicted that Arizona would struggle to score based on their over-reliance on twos. You probably could not have predicted that Michigan would put up over 90 points without Yaxel. Arizona was extremely physical which resulted in foul trouble, but when they got away with it they could score. Michigan forced Arizona into an ungodly number of two point jumpers off the dribble. They were 10-of-32 from mid-range. Arizona missing a dunk felt like the dagger. Michigan's maturity showed, they didn't seem blinded by the lights of the big stage. Elliott Cadeau had the greatest 2-of-14 half of basketball. Yaxel goes out the first time because of foul trouble and Arizona couldn't be more physical than Michigan's guards. Arizona has one way of playing that nobody else could stop, except for Michigan, and Arizona didn't know how to react. When shooting was tough, Trey McKenney stepped up. 16 points on 6-9 shooting, he has changed how we feel about mid-range shooting. [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP] 2. Hot Takes and National Championship Preview - UConn Starts at 33:42 Takes hotter than ADAY MARA. Connecticut is #9 in Kenpom which feels like a relief, but they do have weird tournament joujou. That's better than having to play Duke at least. Michigan vs Tarris Reed for a national championship is crazy. Tarris has matured into a hoss and is their center, his backup, Eric Reibe, is a freshman and a drop-off but still a good player. They don't really play a second big. Alex Karaban is their second biggest player and he's been around college basketball for forever but he's a big wing. This is a game where Tschetter can play. Michigan can play two bigs and put one of them on Karaban but it might only be for 15-20 minutes of the game. Should Michigan make this into a shooting fest and maximize possessions? Tarris Reed is very difficult to ware out. Braylon Mullens is a freshman 6-6 195 lbs wing that Michigan can overwhelm. Silas Demery is a transfer from Georgia, the point guard, top 25 assist rate, top 100 steal rate. Gets to the line a ton, not that great from two. Solo Ball takes most of his shots from outside of the arc, he has also been seen wearing a boot. Expect UConn to show a lot of different coverages. How much Yaxel will we get? Expect it to be a Blake Corum vs Ohio State situation. He came to Michigan to play in this game so you gotta feel for him if he can't play much. UConn's biggest advantages are blocking two point shots and assists, which Michigan should be able to take advantage of. Their path to victory is to replicate what Purdue did in the Big Ten Championship game. Once again, the difference in this game will be Aday Mara. No Paul Szelc won't be officiating this game! ADDENDUM - Solo Ball was reported as being in a boot while this was recorded. If he's not able to play that is a huge drop-off. Even if he plays he's not going to be 100%, much like Yaxel. 3. Hot Takes and Gimmicky Top Five Commercial Takes Starts at 1:20:48 You know AI companies are running out of money because they can't even get Snoop Dogg on their commercials. Charles Barkley will say anything. Has Jennifer Garner acted in anything besides Capital One commercials in the last decade? AT&T did predict the Michigan Tennessee game. Are they putting the cocaine back in Coke? Tall Boozer looks like a normal Boozer, small Boozer looks like an AI recreation of a Boozer. 4. Potpourri: WBB, Hockey, and Football Bits Starts at 1:34:22 Women's basketball was dumptrucked, but at least we now can empathize with all the teams that played MBB. The game has gotten two chalky; it's the same four one-seeds, repeats of the same games. Is there a ceiling on this team, unless they suddenly double the money they put into it? David's hockey takes: Denver is not like or MSU who's going to take the puck off your stick, and those are the teams that Michigan struggles with. He likes Michigan with four lines and snipers versus a smaller goalie—shot quality game. Brian hates that it's Denver in the tournament. Is there a team that's looked better than Michigan in the Playoff? Wisconsin-NoDak is a pick 'em but matchup-wise Wisconsin would rather be playing Michigan. North Dakota got walked to the Frozen Four. If we lose Seth has to wear Denver jersey to the podcast. Football bits: We're in the ping-pong table removal phase. It's okay that Underwood's throwing interceptions, because he's trying them. Non-insane QB run approach. Next QB is Carr. Hiter hype continues, Salesi Moa is popping. Eli Owens fullback talk. Brian doesn't buy the talk of Babalola starting when he's been hurt, but Sprague at RG can only mean that because Frazier is securing a spot. Defensively the DT situation is good on Palepale and not good that Lea'ea is "smart" vs "much larger." Seth loves the Edokpayi talk, Benny Patterson is a Mike-Mo. Kind of a good sign the three young LBs are getting a lot of talk (albeit with a simplification). Good sign that Bracy is getting talked up for his coverage. Griffin Warner and Big East Ben talk CBB weekend betting. The guys also give out best bets and preview the biggest games. CBB Weekend Preview + Best Bets (February 14, 2025) – Summary Introduction (0:14 - 1:31) Host Griffin Warner and co-host Big East Ben introduce the latest episode of the Need for Seeds College Basketball Podcast, presented by Pregame.com. They reflect on last week's best bets, with Big East Ben going 0-2, though their season record remains strong (22-13, 63% overall). Ben's personal record is 11-7 (61%), while Griffin leads at 11-6 (65%). They discuss key takeaways from the UCLA vs. Illinois game and Creighton's struggles, including Liam McNeely's 38-point, 10-rebound performance. Discussion on UConn & Creighton (1:32 - 4:57) Big East Ben criticizes UConn's play, suggesting they might suffer an early tournament exit due to turnover issues and poor defensive matchups. He also slams Alex Karaban, calling him the worst preseason All-American of all time. Warner counters, noting UConn's late-season peaks, improved health, and their win at Creighton, despite foul trouble and injuries. However, both hosts agree UConn's success is unsustainable if they rely on two players. Game Previews & Best Bets Wisconsin vs. Purdue (6:11 - 8:56) Wisconsin is 9-2 against the spread (ATS) on the road and leads the Big Ten in three-point shooting. Purdue relies on interior scoring (highest two-point FG distribution in Big Ten). Defensive battle: Purdue has the 2nd-best defense, Wisconsin 3rd-best in Big Ten. Big East Ben's pick: Under 149.5 points due to defensive dominance. Griffin Warner's pick: Purdue -5, citing their dominance at home. Boise State vs. San Diego State (8:56 - 14:54) San Diego State is 2-8 ATS at home and struggles defensively without fouling (304th in free throw rate). Boise State is #2 in Mountain West in free throw attempts and shoots 75-76% from the line. Big East Ben's pick: Boise State +1.5, citing their free-throw advantage and rebounding. Griffin Warner's pick: San Diego State -1.5, believing their home-court respect will hold. Houston vs. Arizona (14:55 - 19:14) Arizona relies on inside scoring (43rd in two-point FG %) but struggles with three-point shooting (276th in the nation). Houston has the 3rd-best two-point defense in the country and forces turnovers. Big East Ben's pick: Houston -1.5, citing defensive edge and rebounding. Griffin Warner's pick: Arizona +1.5, trusting their home-court strength. Michigan State vs. Illinois (20:20 - 23:40) Illinois lost by 2 at Michigan State earlier despite their best player fouling out in 8 minutes. Michigan State lacks shooting and struggles against zone defenses. Big East Ben's pick: Illinois -6, predicting a dominant win. Griffin Warner's pick: Illinois -6, doubting Michigan State's resilience. Auburn vs. Alabama (23:41 - 30:26) Alabama is a 2.5-point home favorite, but Auburn is statistically the most talented team. Auburn's top-ranked offense faces Alabama's No. 2-ranked offense (KenPom ratings). Big East Ben's pick: Under 172.5, expecting tight defense in a high-stakes game. Griffin Warner's pick: Alabama -2.5, trusting their home advantage. Best Bets & Promo Code (30:27 - 37:08) Big East Ben's Best Bet: SMU -7.5 vs. Wake Forest (SMU dominates weak ACC teams at home). Griffin Warner's Best Bet: Furman -2 vs. UNC Greensboro (Furman undervalued in the market). Promo Code: Slam25 for $25 off a college basketball season subscription at Pregame.com. Final Thoughts The episode wraps with banter about betting, personal life, and college basketball trends.
