Announcing the annual Top Table Award is always a pleasure and an honour at the same time. Choosing and deciding the order of the top 5 games I reviewed in 2023 is never easy. Nick Accardi, co-designer and artistic director for The Boys: This Is Going to Hurt, joined me to talk about this game from Dynamite Entertainment. We discussed the intricacies of adapting a licensed property into a board game. Nick talked about how the game doesn't follow the comics exactly, but instead crafts its own plausible story, so players can get immersed in something new. We also discuss set building and prop work because Nick is interested in some of that, and set building was my previous profession. This game follows the comic and not the Amazon TV show. If you are interested in getting your unpublished game judged, check out Cardboard Edison. I am a judge and have been for a few years. I enjoy the process of judging through Cardboard Edison. They're a great pair of people. This is not a paid ad or anything, but they did ask me to mention the award and since I value them as designer friends, I emphatically said yes.

Flatout Games is a board game design collaborative that was founded in 2017 by Molly Johnson, Robert Melvin, and Shawn Stankewich. They are “focused on creating innovative and elegant game experiences” and “love puzzly games with simple rules, high replayability, and great tension and decision-making, typically with low-luck, high-skill euro-style mechanisms.”  As a design collaborative, they have several published designs, including the 2018 Cardboard Edison and LUCI award finalist Point Salad (AEG), Public Market (Talon Strikes Studios), Dollars to Donuts (Crafty Games), Abstract Academy (Crafty Games), Truffle Shuffle (AEG), and TEN (AEG). In early 2019 Flatout Games created The Flatout Games CoLab, allowing the founding members of Flatout Games to team up with established and emerging designers in the board game industry and make games together. The CoLab has published Calico and Cascadia, and is currently working on publishing Verdant. Today, we put Emma in the spotlight to find out what went into designing her newest game, Abandon All Artichokes, how many cards she actually designed for it, and how the game was almost derailed by an Infinite Potato Problem. SHOW NOTES 5m44s: Magic: The Gathering and the marvelous deckbuilding video game Slay the Spire. Also check out Ludology 198 - Inspired, featuring Slay the Spire's co-designer Anthony Giovannetti. 6m00s: Stardew Valley and Animal Crossing, two video games where the player starts in a remote area with very little in the way of equipment, and ends up building a small town. 7m22s: If you want to check out more deck-wreckers, try Xenon Profiteer (one of Gil's personal favorite games), or Fine Sand. 8m39s: Don't let the bean theme throw you off. Bohnanza is one of the best trading games you'll find. 9m15s: Bonnie Pang did the wonderful art for Artichokes. 9m43s: Sushi Go, by Phil Walker-Harding and also published by Gamewright, is an excellent light drafting game. It was good enough to spawn a family of light, charming drafting games.  Phil has mentioned in passing that Sushi Go took many, many tries to get right. Another example of how hard it is to make a good, light game! 11m16s: Emma mentions some other Gamewright titles that fit a similar mold: Go Nuts for Donuts and Qwixx. 15m22s: Emma casually references Joseph Campbell's Hero's Journey here. 26m29s: Seth Jaffee's article on balancing game elements and "finding the unit" is still immensely valuable to game designers everywhere. 31m59s: Cardboard Edison's publisher directory is an invaluable resource to game designers looking for a publisher for their prototypes. 48m44s: The incredibly adorable Abandon All Artichokes trailer  and its accompanying how-to-play video.  49m18s: We'll post a link to the design diary in the Ludology forums as soon as it goes online! 55m16s: Emma's first episode. 56m43s: Dominion, the game that popularized deckbuilding as an in-game mechanism.

People have experiences that are hard to explain all the time. But when do they actually reveal a deeper meaning? The game Mysterium plays with the idea of messages from the beyond—something its co-designer, Oleksandr Nevskiy, has reasons for thinking about.
