Throughout maritime history, ships have been found drifting with crews mysteriously vanished, leaving behind half-eaten meals and personal belongings undisturbed. The Mary Celeste in 1872, the Carroll A. Deering in 1921, and even modern vessels like the Kaz II in 2007 share the same eerie pattern – perfectly seaworthy ships abandoned in an instant. Some ghost ships reveal more disturbing scenes, like the Ourang Medan, where an entire crew was found dead with faces frozen in terror. Others seemingly travel through time, appearing decades after their disappearance or in impossible locations. Most fascinating is the legend of a Spanish galleon found deep in the Mojave Desert, miles from any ocean. These maritime mysteries span centuries and oceans, reminding us that despite our technology, some things remain beyond human understanding.
In 1921, Carroll A. Deering, a five-mastered schooner, was found run aground off Cape Hatteras in North Carolina. While the ship was completely abandoned with no sign of the crew – there were other eerier signs something bizarre had happened. Theories about the crew's fate involved everything from piracy, to mutiny, to falling victim to the Bermuda Triangle. This episode takes you deep into the wilds and waters of North Carolina, where folklore and fear go hand in hand.We kick things off in the murky lowlands of Scape Ore Swamp, home to one of the strangest cryptid encounters on record. Known as the Lizard Man, this creature first terrorized the small town of Bishopville in the late 1980s. With glowing red eyes, scaly skin, and a towering frame, witnesses described something straight out of a nightmare. But some say this wasn't a one-time visitor. Could the Scape Ore Swamp Monster be part of something bigger—another link in North Carolina's long history of Bigfoot sightings? From there, we head into the dense forests and remote backroads, where encounters with Bigfoot have spanned generations. Hunters, hikers, and locals tell stories of hulking, hair-covered figures crossing highways in the dead of night, of eerie howls that send shivers down your spine, and of something massive lurking just beyond the tree line. These aren't just isolated incidents—they're part of a pattern stretching across the state, from the Uwharrie National Forest to the Blue Ridge Mountains. But the mysteries don't stop in the woods. Off the coast, the Outer Banks are known as the Graveyard of the Atlantic, where more than 2,000 ships have met their end. Some of them, according to legend, never left. We explore the chilling stories of North Carolina's ghost ships, like the Carroll A. Deering, found run aground in 1921 with its entire crew vanished. And then there's the Flaming Ship of Ocracoke, a phantom vessel said to appear in flames before vanishing into thin air. Then come the booms. Along these same shores, locals have heard thunderous explosions for centuries—sounds that rattle homes, shake the ground, and leave no physical trace. They call them the Seneca Guns. Are they earthquakes? Underwater landslides? Something stranger? No one knows. But the booms keep coming. And just when you think it can't get any stranger, we dig into North Carolina's werewolf legends. From the colonial era to the present day, there are stories of shapeshifters, half-human beasts, and howls that don't belong to any known predator. Whether they're European legends brought over by settlers or something older and native to these lands, the werewolves of North Carolina still haunt the edges of local lore. From swamp monsters and Sasquatch to ghost ships, phantom booms, and werewolves—this is North Carolina like you've never heard it before. If you're loving these stories, here's what to do next:Follow and subscribe to the show.Turn on auto-downloads so you never miss an episode.Leave a rating and review—it helps more people find us, and we appreciate it.Most importantly, tell your friends, family, and co-workers. In 1921, a five-masted schooner emerged from the mists off North Carolina's treacherous coast - a floating tomb devoid of life. Eleven souls had vanished without a trace, leaving behind an eerie tableau of abandonment. Tonight we delve into this chilling mystery and attempt to unravel a web of bizarre clues: inexplicably damaged equipment, missing shoreboats, and whispers of aberrant crew behavior from passing ships. Was it a bloodthirsty mutiny? Ruthless pirates? A clandestine rum-running operation gone awry? Or perhaps something far more sinister lurking in the depths of human nature - or beyond? The Carroll A. Deering is a haunting mystery, reminding us that some secrets of the sea may never be fully uncovered, leaving our imaginations to run wild with unsettling possibilities. The early 1920's was a time that saw numerous vessels vanish in the Atlantic Ocean. The Carroll A. Deering didn't vanish, but its crew did, and then washed up on the dangerous Diamond Shoals off the coast of North Carolina. Was it mutiny? Captain Wormell and his first mate did not get along and everyone knew it. German U-boats were a thing of the past, and so were pirates, right? Was it Russians? Or the work of the not-yet-known Bermuda Triangle? We may never know. The Carroll A. Deering (along with the nearby disappearance of the S.S. Hewitt) may go down as one of the greatest unsolved mysteries ever. Support the show

This week we're going to talk about a couple of ghost ships again, two different ships of course. While looking for a specific ghost ship whose name I couldn't recall I stumbled on the Lady Lovibond, its not a very long story but due to it bering a re-occuring event I thought it was a pretty interesting story. Mine was more what most people think when you hear ghost ship, at least what I think, Nates was a different variety. He brings us the Carroll A. In 1921, a ship called the Carroll A. Deering wrecked against the Diamond Shoals, a particularly dangerous area to sail in North Carolina's Outer Banks. Also called the Graveyard of the Atlantic, the long string of barrier islands has seen countless shipwrecks and wild waters, but the mystery of the Carroll A. Deering was the first of its kind. When a search party made its way to the ship, they found food left out in the kitchen, the steering equipment broken, and the crew missing. For over a hundred years, people have tried to figure out how the crew disappeared, where they went, and what actually happened on the Carroll A. Deering. In this episode, we explore the noted animosity between the ship's captain and first mate, the many, many theories about this case, and what the Bermuda Triangle has to do with it. January 31, 1921. The recently-built five-masted commercial sailing schooner, the Carroll A. Deering, wrecks on a notoriously rocky cape of North Carolina's Outer Banks. Once aboard, officials find the ship mostly in order, however there are items missing. Notably a few pieces of equipment, the ship's two lifeboats, the crew's belongings and the entire 11 man crew. None were ever seen again. Amidst stories of rising tensions onboard and strange sightings of the ship before her ultimate wreck, a timeless ghost ship mystery was born. We're singin' more sea shanties on the finale to our 2-part series on ghost ships! This week Sean rounds things out with two twentieth-century tales of ships turning up abandoned at sea, their crew and passengers vanished without a trace. First, MV Joyita recalls last week's Mary Celeste affair with a drifting vessel whose crew never should have dropped their lifeboats. Then, the twists and turns of the Carroll A. Deering incident leave a luxury shipping schooner high and dry on the Carolina coast after every man aboard meets a watery grave - or a violent end.________________________________________Connect with us on social media:Facebook: www.facebook.com/aintitscaryTwitter: @aintitscaryInstagram: @aintitscaryPatreon: www.patreon.com/aintitscary___________________________________________Thank you to our sponsors:BetterHelp - Special offer for Ain't it Scary? listeners: Get 10% off your first month at www.betterhelp.com/aintitscaryAudible - Get a FREE audiobook and 30-Day Free Trial at www.audibletrial.com/aintitscaryBarkBox - Enjoy a FREE month of BarkBox on us when you sign up for a 6 or 12-month BarkBox subscription! Just off the coast of North Carolina, along the outer banks is an area of treacherous waters where the cold Labrador current meets the warm waters of the gulf stream. Strong offshore winds help create a spot for low and high pressure weather systems to collide. Since the 1500s, sailors have been wary of the area, and these waters have earned the nickname graveyard of the Atlantic due to the high number of shipwrecks and countless human lives lost in the region. It was in these very waters that the Carroll A. Deering was found, with no crew, no lifeboats and no sign of what had happened. A century old mystery about a commercial vessel whose crew disappeared without a trace, the remains of which washed up onto the Diamond Shoals.
Come gather around the campfire and let me tell you about the great mystery of the high-seas: ghost ships. Hear about the history of the legend of these mysterious vessels, some legendary and some true stories that have puzzled sailors, scholars, and scientists for centuries. The Flying Dutchman is one of the most infamous ships that's ever been said to set sail, captained by a man destined never to step foot on land. The Mary Celeste was found adrift with no crew, little damage, and a missing lifeboat. The Carroll A. Deering was found crashed in the "Graveyard of the Atlantic", abandoned, but with food in the middle of being prepared in the kitchen. We'll even talk about the ghost ships that still wash up today by the dozens on the shores of Japan from North Korea. Did they fall victim to pirates? Mutiny? Foul weather? Foolish captains? Supernatural forces? The curse of the Bermuda Triangle? A giant squid? Let's talk it over together and see if we can decide what may have sent these crews to their watery graves. This week we look at urban legends and spooky ships, seeking the truth (or myth!) behind the mind-boggling Philedelphia Experiment which was intended to make render a ship invisible but had catastrophic results. We then move onto the vanishing of the Carroll A Deering, whose crew disappeared off the face of the Earth, leaving behind no clues as to what may have happened to them.
January 31, 1921 C. P. Brady, a member of the coast guard, was on lookout duty on the morning of January 31st, 1921. Brady noticed that a boat had run ashore in the Diamond Shoals, a common sight for shipwrecks and known as the “Graveyard of the Atlantic”. The boat in question was the Carroll A. Deering, a five-masted commercial schooner destined for Rio De Janeiro. Once bad weather subsided days later, rescue boats managed to reach the Deering but found no sign of any occupants. In fact, the last known communication from anyone onboard the Deering was on January 28th by the Cape Lookout Lightship off North Carolina. The lightship keeper, Captain Jacobson, reported the crew milling about the deck oddly just days before the wreck.Even more interesting is the fact that the path of the Deering took them to a place known all too well by seafaring folk… The Bermuda Triangle Check out our socials for more updates! In 1921 a schooner ran aground on the treacherous shoals off Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. When rescuers climbed aboard, they found signs of a strange drama in the ship's last moments -- and no trace of the 11-man crew. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll examine the curious case of the Carroll A. Deering, which has been called "one of the enduring mysteries of maritime history." We'll also experiment with yellow fever and puzzle over a disputed time of death. Intro: Benoni Lanctot's 1867 Chinese and English Phrase Book is not a model of cross-cultural comity. In this episode, I share a twisty tale of a ghost ship featuring mutineers and pirates in the modern era. This episode's topic was chosen in response to a patron poll that expressed interest in another episode about a mysterious disappearance, like my episodes on the Lost Colony and the Dare Stones. Den 31 januari 1921 påträffas segelfartyget Carroll A. Deering utanför North Carolinas kust.
On January 31, 1921 the schooner Carroll A Deering was sighted hard aground and under full sail on Diamond Shoals, near Cape Hatteras North Carolina. When the Coast Guard was finally able to board the ship several days later, they found that the entire crew had vanished, without leaving so much as a goodbye note.
